      Isn't it fun! It's like running..you just bring yourself along with your running shoes..for an artist, it's retraining your eye..also, for an artist, instead of running shoes, you bring your pencil.kit and your sketch pad along with yourself!

    Two things that have stood out for me: (1) For introverts, the solitude you can achieve when drawing is restorative in such important ways, whether you're in a quiet, comfortable room or a lightly trafficked park or wild space, your drawing is soft conversation between only you and your subject. (2) Drawing is more compact at home and more portable out and about than any other art form, so it's as unobtrusive as you wish it to be at home and can tag along with you wherever you go. It's always ready when you are.

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agree on both counts Susana. As one who did large oil paintings for ten years, drawing is sooo accessible!😀

    55 year old here always wanted to learn how to draw and never did. Few weeks ago I came into the realization that I was going to die without knowing how to draw and that scared the heck out of me. Learning thru TH-cam and the library books. Just figured out what HB B & H pencils mean 😅 today finally picked up a pen. No eraser oh boy!! I was 50 when I realized I can draw. Your videos are very helpful and encouraging. But there aren't just yours to watch. Once I open the laptop I start wasting tons of time. It's sooo easy to fall into the trap of just watching tutorials on how to draw and to forget that we learn far more if we spend that time by actually learning to draw by doing it. Since I have minimiced my time on social media I have really improved so much! And all the printouts of online tutorials haven't helped me one bit. It's unbelievable how much time and paper I have wasted for social media and online tutorials ... .

    I started drawing at 53, I’m now 58. I try to draw every day if I can even if it’s just a small thumbnail sketch. I started drawing simple subjects looking at capturing shape and form then shading. Each week I would challenge myself to something out of the comfort zone. It takes time to learn and develop the skills. The biggest help I had was videos such as this or ones showing techniques. Most importantly make it fun. I soon found out art was a great stress buster…..

    The problem with our youth is thinking that everything needs to happen today, right now (I'm 28). It's a toxic bubble that surrounds thoughts and makes you think you're too old for certain things, so we sabotage ourselves and give up on our dreams. What a shame. I am so grateful that there are people like you. That encourages us to realize the truth and go after what we want because life only stops even when we die, physically or emotionally. That's why God, or any other force you believe, makes people like you. So thank you, of all my heart. Your videos have helped me a lot along with some books (How to draw, Framed Perspective, etc), I wasn't able to apply perspective. Now I am improving and understanding the technique, and the bonus: enjoying the process.

    Where I went to elementary and secondary, no one was taught to draw. If you already had the talent, you got the "fancy art classes". If you didn't, you got dumb, makework, bad crafts classes until high school, then nothing. I couldn't draw a straight line, so... I made lots of things, but didn't get brave enough to draw and paint until my 50's. It is AMAZING. I'll never be "great", but that's perfectly fine. I love DOING and LEARNING. Thank you so much!

I always saw people primarily using ink if they were drawing so i felt like that was “the way you’re supposed to do it” and followed suit when I started drawing recently. Given time I had those subconscious feelings while drawing in ink thank you explained but you really helped me understand those feelings by putting them into words. OMG! I just found this video and your channel. I've been so excited about art and trying everything but I've come to a point where I realize I'm not really growing my skills the way I hope to. As an older beginner I don't have tons of time to practice so I've decided I have to be more focused, and the first thing that came to me was that I need to reduce my tools so I can really learn how to use some basics. So I made some tough choices and then put some things up for sale to clear off my desk. The second thing was to stop erasing, and to that end I just started a journal this month using only pens. I love watercolors and markers but I'm giving up the markers except for some warm and cool grays, and will also keep another sketchbook just to play with watercolors. But my new pen journal will be my primary effort. Watching this video helped me feel like I'm actually on a good track, so thank you!

      I love it when my videos are really timely for people. I would recommend perhaps more time with the grey markers ahead of the watercolour. They will help you understand tonal value better (light and dark) without the distraction of colour. Have fun with your sketchbook and pen journal. What a great idea 👏😀

I feel what’s been setting me back with my art growth is peoples opinions on what I should and shouldn’t be creating and there opinions on what art mediums I should be using and stuff. Non artist people in my life are very opinionated on what they believe I should create. A friend of mine who’s married to an artist has mentioned that my work doesn’t look like it’s been created by the one person due to all the different styles and could tell that other people had been influencing me.

      Jessica, everyone has their own 'eye', and inner teacher pointing the way. (External teachers too, of course, like Stephen.) And copying/being influenced by other artists' work is how we all learn - seeing how they solve problems, approach a subject, etc. But of course you won't stop there, it's just one or two lessons along the way. Don't listen to anyone's opinions, but if something resonates with you, maybe consider that as an opportunity to see something anew. Congratulations on a good start!

    Great advice! Thank you! I started with graphite pencil and am trying to transition to colour pencils, because I just love colour, especially in the Aussie bush. It's surprisingly more difficult to get values right than by using graphite. For me, anyway. It's very difficult to erase colour pencils, so having a knowledge of colour theory helps enormously and practising layering, colour hues, values, etc. I'm starting small and not overwhelming myself. I think using pen is a great idea and something I will have a go at. Similar to graphite in a sense, though as you say, more permanent (although I never used an eraser anyway). Thanks again!

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  ปีที่แล้ว

      What a great adventure you’re on. Graphite is easier because it is just the one factor, value to juggle, rather than colour and value. One way to help understand how colour converts to value is to change photo images to black and white using your phone photo app. Doing this repeatedly helps train us to understand how different colours convert to value. But whatever you do, have fun. All the best 😀

      @@stephentraversart Thanks Stephen. Funny you should mention that ... I'm working on an apple (yes, I know, but it helps understand values, tints, shades, as well as contours). Yet in black and white it stuck out like the proverbial. Go figure! Hahahaha

    Hi Stephen! It's curious that you talk about starting with ink instead of pencil, because one of the reasons I stopped drawing as a kid was frustration. I didn't have patience for letting myself improve. Now I've been drawing digitally for over 5 years (just as a hobby), and I got much better at it, and really enjoy it as a break from the rest of my day, but if I am honest, the reason I picked up digital drawing is because of the ability to undo a mistake (I work with vectors, so that's even easier to do "after the fact"). I've been wanting to dive into ink drawing for a while, and I think this is a great advice. Just draw. Don't worry about the finished piece, since the goal is for you to actually get better. Thanks for sharing and have a great rest of the week!

      just as a practice exercise, try using a ball point pen and drawing your construction lines as lightly as possible. you can go over things with a heavier line once you've got that down. not being able to erase at all can be really helpful to build confidence in your lines and also help you to think a bit before putting down lines. you should gain more control over your line pressure by drawing lightly as well. you may also find after practicing with ink for a while that you need to make construction lines less often.

    I'm 46 and been drawing and painting in digital, pencil, charcoal, watercolour, gouache and oil pastels. Now I'm learning to draw with ink and I have done both loose pencil sketch first and straight with ink for myself not to fear making mistakes. I'm by no means a master, but at least for me I have seen pretty big development in my skills even if I have used different mediums. Also for me being able to switch to different one when I feel like it as keeping motivation going on. Also colour theory is something that I have learned with starting digital and watercolours (later gouache and oil pastels) and lots of my learned skills transfer to the new mediums. So for me, I think hopping and testing different mediums has been good. I also do watch lots of youtube videos, but I also read a lots of books since they are often constructed in nice manner.
    I'm definitely not trying to say I'm right and you are wrong :). I think your method will develop ink drawing skills faster, but for me I have found enjoyment from learning different things. Often I might have periods when I do stuff with only one particular medium like now with ink, but I might do something different on one day and then continue. Just a ramble how I have been learning.
    edit: My plan is to learn drawing with a ink pretty much without sketching with pencil. I have just used sketching for example for some face drawings so that I have about the correct proportions and then can happily try to apply my hatching techinques on something that at least at the start looked like a normal head :).

I didn't understand why others were so serious about them and I started to think that people expect from me to be better and perfect. I stopped drawing because I was afraid that I would disappoint them, that I wouldn't be able to meet their expectations that I'd fail.
    One day (it was the darkest time in my life) I decided to build that self confidence and be myself in art. I was hopped that art will help me to be ME not a person that I suppose to be for others.
    I have 1 special sketchbook only for my learning and relax. I started simple quick drawings only from life, using pen or sometimes ink. Rules: I can't erase my mistakes and draw no longer than 15-20 minutes. The best thing is that this is for my eyes only and I can do mistakes all the time. Simple drawings of shapes, textures... everything that catch my attention.
    After short period of time I found that I more often accept my mistakes and learn from them a lot, my hand is more loose but exact at the same time. I'm not perfect and I'm better and better because of that. I love experimenting with paint, pencils and other mediums.
    4 years ...and I feel that there is no such a thing that I can't or afraid to draw, it's perfectly fine if I didn't do it right because I can start again and again.
    I'm 44 and I'm finally happy to be ME.
    I agree with you in every sentence and happy that I found your YT channel. Thank you.

      Thanks for sharing your journey. Sounds like you’re well on your way to a much healthier place within. Art can do that. But you’ve made some important choices as well. Good on you. 👏 All the best as you continue to chart the way ahead. 😀

      TH-cam is owned by Google. It’s kind of relevant at times. 🫣

    My father was an artist so I have been around art and attempting to draw my whole life. I love learning. In some ways I can see things now at 73 that I did not at an earlier age, but Iʼm a bit slower at it. I want to draw trees and forest scenes, which can be overwhelming at first, but I want to really understand the tree, how it grows, and learn how to simplify and use details that suggest all the complexity. I especially want to capture the light and shadows.

      I have a playlist Jan on drawing the effect of detail that might help with that in a variety of contexts. I’m sure life experience also counts in drawing development, it has with me. It’s great that you’re able to enjoy this now. I have a tree playlist as well. All the best and have fun with it. 😀

      @@stephentraversart Thank you so much and I will be sure to watch it. So far my squiggles in ink suggesting leaves are not as convincing as they could be.I will keep learning and practicing.
