    Should use vinyl or linoleum for floor. Doesn’t absorb moisture from bird waste , can be hosed out. The wood floor will start to smell and can’t get rid of the smell once it’s soaked in

    I love it brad! It reminds me when I built my chicken coop. Here’s some ideas for you brad that I did on my coop. I have cameras in my coop to watch my chickens from anywhere. I used heavy duty metal screen called hardware cloth for the run. I also have a 50 gallon barrel of water that is on a circulation pump so the water doesn’t stay stagnant or freeze in the winter. And I remember you saying in a passed video about the electric door. Man that was the best thing I could have done. I went with a company called run chicken. Worth every penny. Can’t wait to see the finished product! 👍🏼

    Talking about return material, i built my two sons a clubhouse using material from a convenience gas station. I asked the job boss if they had extra wood. He took me to pile and take what i needed, but leave 20 2x6's, they are for his house. Thats the day i found out job sites get charged for extra wood to finish workers projects.

    Brad you should get several round wood post to put inside and outside the chicken coop to make perches and you should put up a couple motion censored flood lights on corners of the chicken coop that will come on when a varmint walks by so it scares them off and you should put a small piece of sheet metal around the bottom of three sides of the screened chicken porch that goes in the ground several inches to help keep varmints from trying to dig into the chicken coop.

    Brad,
    Good looking chicken coop .
    Are you raising any meat chickens for yourself??
    Just a suggestion, you can buy a couple of calves at a livestock auction and graze them for a year then butcher them , also a pig to, then get
    4 deep freezers and you will be stocked for a year +
    Then once your pond gets established you’ll have fish too . Your grocery bill will be considerably less ,
    If you do the math of the cost to buy all the meat at the grocery store vs butcher your own you will save around 1200,00 dollars,
    And it’s grass fed beef and pork, and a lot better tasting,,
    Anyway just a suggestion
    Good luck 🍀

    • @BradtheBuilder
      @BradtheBuilder  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I really like the way you’re thinking… We’re trying to do just that, but we’re going at it a little slower Oceanpoint yes we are raising meat chickens as well.
      My boys have been doing that all summer with the chicken tractors only feeding them organic food.

    Brad you have to multiple levels to the roost. That will set the pecking order. You will need the appropriate size board for them to roost on. Too big or small it can cause problems with their feet. I like this coop gonna be super cool!!

    • @BradtheBuilder
      @BradtheBuilder  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Is it important to have different levels? Because some people are telling us keep it at the same level so there is not a pecking order established… I’m confused.

    • @SGTshankem
      @SGTshankem 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@BradtheBuilder chickens need a pecking order. Chickens use the pecking order to establish who in the flock is more dominant. While the idea of the pecking order may seem violent, it can help keep order in the coop. Without a hierarchy, birds will constantly fight or squabble for access to mates, food, water, or roosting places.

    Your perches need to be about 1.5" in diameter. They need something to grab onto. I started with handrail but they were having trouble moving around because it's only like 1-3/8ths" They say not to use 2x4 because it collects poop. So I ended up with 2x2 and the hens seem to like it. They can hop up and turn around without slipping off.
    I started with a fenced run but as they got older they started screaming all of the time. So now they roam the backyard. We have hawks, owls, and eagles so their life is endangered. They go in the coop at night so owls really aren't a problem. I doubt the eagles would land in the backyard but I have seen hawks land and trigger the motion detectors on the security cameras. I live in town and can't have them screaming and bothering the neighbors. If would be a shame if they did get smoked but I can buy more and start over
