- Paul Kalanithi, MD, was a Stanford neurosurgeon who was diagnosed with lung cancer in his mid-30s. He wrote a popular op-ed for The New York Times in early 2014 on confronting mortality. Here, he reflects on his changing perception of time as doctor, patient and new father. He died at 37 on March 9. The Stanford community mourns his loss.

I just finished reading his book. What an inspirational man. Absolutely a gift he gave to me and the rest of the world. I fell in love with his ambition and his words and also his own family. Feeling the pain and love he had. He has inspired me to keep going on. And I don't even have a reason to give up. Just depression. I would love to thank him if only he was here, but I suppose I will thank him even more by continuing on with my own life's journey.

Please don't say "just depression" because I suffer from chronic depression and this is an equally devastating disease. Don't you dare give up though!!! Don't you dare ever!!!! The sun will come up again, everyday for everybody, even if we cannot see it. This gentleman and his family and life are here to help and inspire us I believe. Miracles do happen, everyday.

I just finished his book and added it to my FAVORITE BOOKS EVER list which has only 32 books listed in my almost 75 years of life(as an English major, so I've read quite a few--good ones!!!). It is beyond tragedy that we've lost this man, who was one of the most humane doctors who ever lived. But he fulfilled the goal of his book. He authentically faced life and death and was a seer to lead all who read it to do the same.

even if this video was shot only before a month , he had died, he looks so peaceful. He looked in the eye of the death and faced it bravely! Really appreciate this man!
I just finished your book and cried alot. It reminded me of the Carl Sagan quote "Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people,citizens of distant epochs, who never knew one another. Books break the shackles of time-proof that humans can work magic." I know you have passed on, but I like to think you can read this anyway. Not to worry, Doc. You did good as a neurosurgeon AND a writer!

Just Finished Paul's book. Wow. That hit me very hard. It was a magnificent read, and I give him immense praise for his ambition in trying to understand death and the relation it has to a meaningful life. My deepest condolences to his friends and family. I am forever grateful that he decided to write a book.

My mother passed away from the same disease at the age of 56 about two years ago. She never smoked either. Please give more support to lung cancer patients, especially stage four lung cancer patients!!!
darksideofthenation my mom also a non-smoker was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Very aggressive radiation and chemo did nothing to halt its spread. She passed away less than 4 months after diagnosis. Sorry for your loss. I miss my Mom every day

His view on life gives a unique perspective that not many others could show. This is outstanding.
I'm crying right now, just finished the book. I'm so grateful I own this book. Different people will relate to this in different ways, but all of us need it. I wish I can personally thank him and tell him how much impactful his words are, and can change a person completely, in a beautiful way.
I'm not sure anyone thinks about their Dr dying of terminal cancer. Almost seems like they would or should be invincible. I give his wife a long bow for giving this man a child,legacy in a sense of his own, knowing full well she would be a single parent and would later continue to tell his daughter all about who her dad was.
Nah doctors are just flesh and blood. I don't put them on a pedestal in fact they mess up alot

I just finished reading his book and it's so beautiful to connect points from the book with this montage. it gave it all a sense of realness, that although was already present, now became more intensified. to see him holding Cady like he said he did or talk about the verb tense like he did. his autobiography was the first I've ever read and now encouraged me to pick up more stories about heroes that existed.

Well honestly people who go into the field are brilliant in their own right. For all those years of medical school same with just the "average" ordinary doctors, nurses...these people dedicated their lives, money, & time. You have to really love what you are doing to go into these fields because they are grueling.

What a great loss. Words can't begin to express the sympathy i feel on the untimely death of this beloved Dr. I am so sure he will be missed by everyone that knew him. I do not know Dr Paul but I have seen his impact as a good Doctor, a husband and a father through the video. I can only say this "some people may die young, By dying young a person stays young in people's memory. If he burns brightly before he dies, his brightness shines for all time and we can also say not in grief he is no more - but live in thankfulness that he was.

Your book changed my life
Your words from 5:17 made me cry for sometime.... because at that moment thoughts of my brother-in-law (or rather my own brother I would say) who is just 28 years old suffering from a terminal illness came into my mind and these words made me aware of how precious life actually is every single day. I left very sad that you were about the same age as mine being born in 1977. May your life inspire many others who are suffering from terminal illnesses like that you had. RIP Dr. Kalanithi...

I am praying for you. With your whole life ahead of you and with that precious little baby ... I am praying that you find hope and that you beat this awful disease. I have Stage IV adenocarcinoma of the lungs. I don't know how long I'll live, of course, but immunotherapy has been a Godsend for me. I hope the miracle drug will be found for you.
I appreciate that you posted this movie. I hope many of your MD colleagues view it and realize how their patients feel, what they're going through. I think too often they forget - they're so busy and it probably would hurt too much to get too connected. But, my PCP who cried when she saw me and how well I was doing two years after she discovered the knot that started the ball rolling meant the world to me. She cares about me on a human level!

I immersed in his book and immediately looking for some real image of him in real life, that why i'm here. His book touchs my feeling and emotion, definitely becomes my favorite book of all times. From the 8 minutes of watching this moving video, Dr. Kalanithi strikes me as a true gentleman, who has given a lot back to society in his line of medicine and I am sure had so much more to offer. In todays confused world it is somewhat easy to confuse who the real heroes of our society are. The media does a great job of thrusting celebs and sports stars in to our daily lives, but in my mind I know who would get my utmost admiration. The world's loss is the afterworld's gain. RIP.

I read Dr. Kalanithi''s book when it first came out and then watched this video some time later. The other day, I thought of the poem, Ozymandias, and came back to revisit this video. I am still moved by this man, his book, this video and the poem that is recited at the end. Such a loss for all of us, this beautiful life that has now gone on.

Wonderful book. Tragic story. Lessons learned. Much respect to Dr.Kalanithi.
I wanted to read this book for more than a year. When I found it in greek I didn't wait. I bought it and I read it in two days. This is book that you have to read in your mother tongue so you don't miss anything. I wasn't sure if was ready to face the truths that Dr Kalanithi was bringing me face to face. I knew it would change my life and that I would understand how small and yet how important I am. How much of an egoist I am to act most of the times like I am immortal. When the book arrived I sat on my kitchen table and opened it. I took a deep breath and started reading it. I felt like he was sitting on the other chair with a cup of coffee speaking to me. And when I arrived at the epilogue I had in front of me that strong woman Dr Lucy Kalanithi opening her heart with such grace and courage. Before buying this book I didn't do any research to see who he was. I just knew I had to read it. Dr Kalanithi, a man of such greatness of spirit with his book gave me life lessons. I am sad he had to leave so early. I would like to thank Dr Lucy Kalanithi, the family of Dr Kalanithi and everyone who worked to bring this book to my hands. From the pubblishers to the postman that rang my bell. But most of all I want to thank Dr Kalanithi for everything.
