Frequently Asked Questions Thank you to the 98% of you who are so kind, funny, and respectful. You all are so awesome! Thank you so much for supporting the channel! We encourage nice/respectful comments. Disrespectful comments will be removed (either by me or TH-cam). Yes, TH-cam often gets to those before I do (for instance, the comment that addressed us as monkeys and our children as hybrids. A comment like that obviously goes against TH-cam's policies. 1. We are aware of how red hair is inherited. The question about where the red hair comes from is not ours but the numerous people who stop and ask us this on a regular basis (almost daily). genetics.thetech.org/ask-a-geneticist/what-are-my-chances-having-red-haired-child 2. Is red hair really that rare? What about Black people with red hair? Yes. Red hair is the rarest hair color in the world. Worldwide, red hair only represents 1-2% of the entire population (regardless of race). There is very limited data regarding Black people with red hair. However, limited studies have shown red hair is not common in Africa as the environment historically required dark hair/dark skin. Remember, the gene for dark hair is dominant, whereas the gene for lighter color hair is recessive. The majority of Black Americans are mixed with up to 25% European ancestry. genetics.thetech.org/ask/ask67 3. Does our daughter with red hair have albinism? No. I think children with albinism are absolutely adorable. Our daughter, however, does not have albinism. Her doctor did check her for this. Her grandfather and great uncle also do not have albinism. There are many forms of albinism, and some people with albinism do have red hair. However, that is not where our family members got red hair. medlineplus.gov/genetics/condition/oculocutaneous-albinism/ 4. Why do we call ourselves Black and not mixed when we have mixed ancestry? I think being mixed or biracial is cool! If one of my parents was of another race, for sure I would call myself mixed. However, my closest ancestor of full European descent was 4-6 generations ago (during the slavery era). My foremothers and fathers have been labeled as Black/Negro since before the end of slavery. About 14% of the US population identifies as Black (over 48 million people). The average Black American has up to 25% European ancestry (just like me). It is unreasonable to suggest that roughly 85% of Black Americans (about 40 mill people) should reclassify themselves as mixed instead of Black due to their mixed ancestry that may be from hundreds of years ago. In addition, how would you assign a cut off? How much mixed ancestry would a person need to be considered mixed? How will you determine this? Will you require every American to take a DNA test? See my point? Studies also have shown that European Americans with up to 27% of African DNA still call themselves white and not mixed. Remember also that race is a social construct and not a biological one. www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/jefferson/mixed/onedrop.html www.sciencemag.org/news/2014/12/genetic-study-reveals-surprising-ancestry-many-americans 5. Were Black people really slaves? Perhaps free blacks married free whites and produced children out of love. It is possible but less likely. Studies have used DNA tests to trace American ancestry and migration (for instance, migrating from the South to the North). While the average African American has about 25% European ancestry, only 4% of European Americans show African ancestry (1% African ancestry or higher). That's a significant difference and indicates that there wasn't a lot of consensual mixing back then as some would suggest. I'm so glad things are different now! I believe we are all God's creation and are beautifully made! In the study discussed in the article listed below, researchers were able to track how many of a person's (of African or Native descent) ancestors were male versus female. They discovered that European ancestors tended to be male while African and Native American ancestors tended to be female (i.e. in most cases, the relationship was white male and African woman or white male and Native woman). www.sciencemag.org/news/2014/12/genetic-study-reveals-surprising-ancestry-many-americans 6. Do you favor one child over the other based upon hair color/skin color? Ridiculous. We obviously love all of our children and do whatever we can to give them the best opportunities. 7. Why do you use your children to get attention? Another funny question lol. We are well established in our careers and our lives and definitely don't "use" our children nor do we have to. There are thousands of families on TH-cam who share their family lives with the world. Remember also that every family is different. You have a right to decide what is acceptable for your family, and we have the right to decide what is good for our family. 8. Were there Irish and Scottish slaveowners in America? Yes. Many historians have shown there were indeed Irish and Scottish slaveowners in America. I'm also aware that some Scottish/Irish came over as indentured servants. th-cam.com/video/6wMtkt9uvUo/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/0jje9-EVrcY/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/FyVWNqhOCFE/w-d-xo.html 9. Do we think Vlad inherited his Eastern European/Russian ancestry from slavery? NO! In fact, we believe he inherited that ancestry from his father well after slavery. We are on a journey to discover more about his real grandfather. th-cam.com/video/LyyiustEQQY/w-d-xo.html Trish's Ancestry DNA results: th-cam.com/video/d5kA88h-jk4/w-d-xo.html Vlad's Ancestry DNA results: th-cam.com/video/d5kA88h-jk4/w-d-xo.html Payton's Ancestry DNA results: th-cam.com/video/A2o9K27IUxw/w-d-xo.html Trish's dad's ancestry results: th-cam.com/video/Xi5ndkQDaOo/w-d-xo.html Ancestry Playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLX38ShvQ65LgtaMxJDavopJk-1qxq7Epr.html
Red-haired, Irish American here. A lot of people don't realize that if a child has red hair, they have to inherit the gene from *both* sides (both parents), as you mentioned. You guys both have large percentages of ancestry from countries with sizable redhead populations (Ireland, Scotland, Russia, Poland). Of course, red hair is found in populations all over the globe (incl China), as you now know. You will almost always be different than everyone else in the room as a redhead (no matter your skin color). It really does impact how you develop your personality & approach to others. Your daughter is a beautiful little girl with gorgeous, amazing hair! She'll be a credit to "our kind"!😉💓 *Red hair Power!!*
Your daughters are all just gorgeous young ladies. How interesting to learn where the red hair possibly comesfrom. So many options! I'm glad your little ginger knows her hair gives her power.😆
As a white man. This video is so positive. Regardless of the genetic back story, whatever that proves to be. Your daughter fits the look like hand in a glove. Nothing is out of place. God is truly an artist. Please protect her because suitors will be lining up at the door. She's relatively unique and boy is she going to stand out from the crowd. Please protect her. Good luck!
It’s not really just black folk. It’s anyone who’s dark period. 2 dark Indians can make a lightskin colored eyes child. 2 dark Latinos can make a lightskin colored eyed child and so on. it’s very easy to lack more melanin than ur parents. U just can’t add it once it’s gone unless u make a baby with someone darker than u… which is usually the case. I noticed a lot of lightskin women like their darker counterparts
@@cassandraarcos298 that is assuming that there is no mix in those. Black people being the original people (100%) are the ones capable of producing any color or even hair texture. Then those derivatives of blacks can also produce those colors based on what was originally produced.
"Trish. She's white." HAHAHAHAHA! OMG, I'm dying. I used to know a black girl with red hair, and red freckles. She was adorable. When I asked about her ancestry, she said she was half black, and half Irish. She had a beautiful cherry-colored afro, and the freckles totally made her cheeks pop. She could have been a model! Genetics are cool! :D
When I was in high school one of my classmates had natural red hair, eyelashes, eyebrows and everything, his skin was very similar to your girl, but all his facial features where pretty white, I remember that he almost got suspended in the first week because dyed hair was against the rules, he told them that it was natural but the director didn't believe him (I'm from south america, here red hair is suuuuuuuuuuuper rare let alone not been pale AND have red hair) he was so mad that, in the middle of the hallway, he unbuckle his belt, lowered his pants just a little and there it was...a trail of red hair going down...after that no one asked if his hair color was natural.
Thank you! She does rock it well. She was our surprise baby. I always wondered if we ever had anymore if they would have had red hair too. It will be nice to see if any of our grandchildren will. We will have updates on our ancestry in the near future as we are trying to discover who my husband's grandfather was and will also reveal our girls' ancestry results. If you would like to follow the story, we would appreciate it if you would subscribe and hit the notification bell.
This same misconception about red hair happens even with two white parents. My husband and I both have brown hair and out of 5 kids only our youngest, the only one we share together, has red hair. Everyone always looks at him then side eyes me asking where he got it. I’m like, seriously? We both have red heads in our family and it just came out with only one kid. They act like red hair is some smoking gun or something. No, it’s called genetic roulette.
Absolutely. I've seen the stares and heard the comments. I guess a lot of people still don't understand much about DNA. Thanks for watching and sharing!
My dad is a darker skinned Puerto Rican and his mother’s brother and cousins are light skinned and red headed ! It freaked me out the first time I met them , genetics are great 😊.
Thank you so much! We will have more videos with her and our other kids in the near future, so don’t forget to subscribe and hit the notification bell if you would like to follow our story.
I’m a white Brit who was born with red hair, it faded to more brown later and a lot of grey now. I didn’t mind the hair color, but I wish I had a bit more skin pigment. I cannot tan and burn very easily. Your daughter looks beautiful. I hope she inherited enough pigment from you two to give her some protection from the sun.
@@marthawarrington7748 The Dad said the baby was white! Red heads dont normally tan but you have to be careful because they produce their own vit D which can cause problems and higher risk of skin cancer
I was born with red hair and very light skin, just like your daughter . It stayed that way throughout my childhood but as I got older it darkened. Ive dyed it a few times in the past, so it's now darker than it should be. My DNA results shared that I was a red head. I want it back!
In my family there is always 1 redhead each generation going back 6 generations... When asked where the red hair came from... we always say there was "rust in the pipes" LOL
I too was born red headed, but out of 11 kids there were 4 red heads. I only learned to embrace my red hair when I became an adult. I was born during the 60s and so I got a lot of flack from our people about having red hair. I also did ancestry dna and found out about the Irish and Scottish background. By the way both parents are black, mom dark skinned, dad light. Your daughter reminds me so much of myself at that age...so beautiful!
I bet that was interesting growing up during that time with red hair. My husband’s dad and uncle had red hair too and they were born in the 1950’s to a dark skinned mom.
@@sakurakou2009 you say that as tho the two are mutually exclusive; they're not. it's like saying a Black Dominican looks like a Black person. LOL they can look both Black + Latino/x. 💁🏾♀
Or Lord, yall... I grew up as a white natural redhead. That was a pain in the ass.... Every dang Karen in the world asking where I got my red-hair. I finally told these old bitties that I ate paint chips. Never asked that question again 🤣. And the ginger temper is real! Lmao ask my husband
@Citygirl Poland Gingers (redheads) are known for being hot headed and bad tempers....easily to anger lol. Like it takes A LOT to anger me, but when I do get angry watch out.
As a child, I attended a church where one of the members, a black woman (who had attended this church since her childhood), had freckles and auburn hair; a beautiful deep, obviously, red color (this was her natural hair color). - Her eyebrows, her eyelashes, her hair - all auburn in color. - When she got married, she married a black man, with brown eyes, and of medium brown complexion. - When they had their first baby, a little boy, the little boy was very pale (at about 2 years-old, he was still at least a shade lighter than his mother) and had red hair. - This woman was/is the only person who I have EVER met, black or white, that had natural auburn hair.
Funny I had a classmate with the same description. She was Haitian and her daughter was a mini version of herself. Same redhair and freckles but dad was darkskinned. Beautiful family.
I’m black and I have always had a face full of freckles and natural auburn hair (it used to be really bright Orange but now that I’m older it has unfortunately gotten darker). 🙂 I hated being different as a child since people always talked about my hair, but now I really miss how bright my hair was before. Most people assume I just dye it a deep auburn now since that color has been so trendy recently, and they don’t even ask about it anymore or think it’s anything special lol
My brother had gorgeous, natural auburn hair, freckles, and fawn colored eyes. My kids' Grandma on their Dad's side had natural Auburn hair and hazel eyes, until her hair turned gray. She will be 100 years old soon. My Maternal side are almost all blue eyed, strawberry blonde or auburn haired. My hair was what they used to call "Dishwater Blonde". Not very pretty.. So, I started coloring my hair when I was 12 and in 7th grade. My Mom and Granny were thrilled. I used to hear them say, "Thank goodness for Clairol" throughout my childhood. My Dad and his family were 100% Ashkenazi Jewish, black haired, black eyed, with Olive skin. Out of 15 first cousins on his side, I am the only one with blue eyes. My Dad was the only one of his siblings to leave the East Coast and marry a Gentile in Los Angeles, CA. On my Mom's side I am a 4th generation Southern Californian. Her family has been in America since before 1600. I am a 1st generation Southern Californian and a 3rd Generation American on my Dad's side. Both sides came to America to escape religious persecution. Both the Jews and the Protestants were chased, killed, had their homes, property, and anything they owned stolen or destroyed.
My husband is dark chocolate and Haitian. But I my son was born with red hair on his head and blonde body hair. I offered him a DNA test to squash his concerns.
I'm white and British. Both of my adult daughters have red hair. They would often have strangers touching their heads when they were children and teenagers. They still experience it today, to a lesser extent and they are 32 and 27. Your daughters are great, beautiful and full of personality.
@Citygirl Poland there's nothing wrong with red hair. they are not a majority in the UK, though. even there are more of them in ireland and scotland... and there are african people who are naturally redheads... just like there are a lot of african albinos in some parts of east africa
Here in New Plymouth, New Zealand. A long long way from anywhere, there are heaps of red headed kids, and snowy tops too. Saterday sports is the time to see the diverse range of poeple living here.
My Dad side has red hair, came from my GrandMother, her Father was biracial. It's a strong gene, my Dad was brown with red hair and freckles all over. The color range and hair of my GrandMother's children Deep black with red undertones and almost white with red undertones, all with visible freckles. All beautiful :)
That’s cool. I’m sure you will continue to see it pop up in future generations. My dad’s side also has red hair. We weren’t for sure my dad or any of kids carried the gene until I had my daughter. Hope to see it again in one of my grandchildren. Thanks for watching! Don’t forget to subscribe if you like the content. We will have more family videos and other DNA videos in the near future.
I have freckles too. I am dark brown, not deep dark, but more like a nutmeg. My family and the kids in school called me "freckle face" lol. Born in Louisiana. My grandmother was part Irish.
UPDATE: We've been doing some research on Vlad's family history and specifically where he inherited his European/Russian ancestry. We have discovered a close relative! We will talk about that in this Thursday's episode (05/13/2021). Make sure to come back for that episode. It's going to be a good one. We appreciate all of your support and nice comments! Happy Tuesday to you!
@UC1KvIFoJjqZ_n8J39mqTRtA sorry, I wasn't making light of your heritage, but many don't realize that. I thought the same thing also, many years ago, until I was disenchanted by a close friend of mine. We were talking about slavery and I made a comment about his family being slaves, and he straight out told me, that even though his family was here before the civil war, his family had never been slaves. I was actually put back on that, because I knew him well enough that I knew he wasn't lying to me. He actually told me to do my research into the history of American slavery, and that's when I found out that schools had been lying to people for decades. I learned about the civil war in the 1970's and 1980's, so I thought I knew about it. So, when I got a chance, I started doing my own research into what my friend had told me, and became disillusioned with what the schools had been teaching me and others. So, I apologize for any slight that I may have given to you and your family. One other thing, don't let your little darling change her hair color. She's going to grow up to be a heart breaker, just the way she is. I'm surprised that she doesn't have green eyes also, because the few ladies I've seen, with dark skin and red hair, have had emerald green eyes. But she is a beautiful young lady, and she will light up any room she walks into with that smile.
You guys are hilarious, loved the video. I went to school with a girl who was light skinned, freckled, curly red hair and green eyes. Her 3 sisters had light brown eyes and all had different shades of brown hair, only one of them had curly hair, and all had a different skin tone. They were all beautiful. Their father used to joke that they're the reason he had to get rid of the milkman and buy a cow.
My mother had red hair with freckles, my great nephew has red hair and was very light skin and his older brother has black hair and brown skin. When he was a baby I called him carrot head, but my mother put a stop to that name. I am 65 years old and I keep saying I should take the DNA TEST
Wow your daughter is beautiful 🤩 Your husbands results surprised me (I won’t spoil them tho lol)! But I love watching black and biracial dna tests bc we are so diverse !!
Me too! I love finding out more about people’s ancestry. We plan to test our children soon and will post a video about that, so stay tuned for that. We would love to see what she inherited from us.
I will never, ever, EVER understand why redheads always have such a bad reputation. It's like the more rare and unique the trait, the more it is frowned upon. Even as a child, I was always enamored with red hair- and I've never grown out of it. It still stops me in my tracks for a second and I just have to take it in. I have a lot of red and light brown streaks in my hair, but I would never be able to call myself a true redhead like this gorgeous little beauty. I guess people forget that the cradle civilization is in the heart of Africa, soooooo what do people expect? We (melanin people) produce every kind of traits under the sun. She was chosen to reflect the amazing powers that we have as a people, and I am soooooooo happy that she embraces herself!! It's time to stop the redhead hate- I don't care what skin color, but especially in my culture- it is GORGEOUS.
Red hair is a recessive genetic trait caused by a series of mutations in the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R), a gene located on chromosome 16. As a recessive trait it must be inherited from both parents to cause the hair to become red.
What about in cases wherein there are strands of red hair randomly spread throughout ones head and beard particularly when the rest of the hair is black?
@@DaggerSecurity I am an American Descendant Of Slavery and my hair was as you described when I was growing up.....there were areas of my hair that were reddish......
If everyone did a DNA test maybe people could stop the racial hate. Well just wishful thinking AND a lot of praying. This is the first video I've seen of yours. Love you guys!!
That wouldn't negate the argument for racial hate and it would simply be impractical for how DNA works. There will be always so called pure blooded individuals. Even if just a handful.
I’m a natural redhead too, however I cover my hair with wigs to blend in. Growing up was a special experience....either felt beautifully unique or a freak with folks grabbing at my head. I absolutely loved this video, love seeing other black gingers.
I’m a black ginger. I do know that my 3 times great grandmother on my father’s side was Irish and she married a Native American. I’m very light skinned, with red hair, freckles and high cheek bones. I get asked all the time where I go for my hair color.......like black can’t have natural red hair. Lol
Freckles is a spot of melanin... If the spots are fully furnished Irish people will look like africans. Most do not understand that it's an African gene not a European gene at all. Europeans enherit freckles from African Ancestory . Ask any Geneticist.
Considering I commented on a video titled “Black people with red hair” it’s clear I mean African American and it’s clear that I know Africans do not have light skin because I stated that I have Irish and Native American in my DNA.
Most African Americans are part European. Historically black people just did not want to admit what was really happening during slavery times. Which started the stories of having Indian in the family. I too am 66% African and 33% European.
yet at the same time, most african american were originally made slaves by africans... i guess some african mixing might have occurred while africans were being kidnapped and sent to be traded away... ... as far as the Russian part is concerned, i'm wondering wether some of it wouldn't be from when the aristocrats from russia fled from the Communist revolution... that might even make you the great great great great great grandson of a Count or... maybe a Prince!!! NAZDAROVIE!!! ^^
@Carlo Santana Ireland and Scotland are European Countries.....Many migrated to America and owned plantations....because of the very more than often forced sexual attention toward female slaves by the masters etc....there are American Descendants Of Slavery who have a percentage of Irish and Scot in their DNA makeup......American Descendants Of Slavery can present in varied phenotypes.....lightest of light to the darkest of dark in complexion with varied eye coloring....hair color....hair textures and facial features.....
People always think 2 Brown-skin biological parents cannot produce a light-skin or pale-skin child. But both my grandparents on both my mom & dad side had about 10 children. And all my uncles & aunts came in various colors from the darkest skin tone to the lightest skin tone. Growing up seeing this, I always thought the more kids u have, the further it would reach back to the bi-racial ancestors from slave times and reproduce a lighter skin child. Of course, this was before we had access to DNA. Now that I, and some of my family members have taken the DNA TEST; it just somewhat confirmed what I was thinking back then. Most Black people have now discovered we are all mixed with European or some other ethnicities.
@@MariE-bz2eq But there are black Nigerians that have produced white children. The DNA studies showed no European genes in a particular case I can think of. It's a mystery while the child is white (non-Albino).
I’m half Polynesian half Irish with red hair, my sister is half black half Irish with red hair. She looks just like my sister hahah and redheads can access their adrenaline way quicker than any other hair color. Love this video🤙🏼
Thanks for watching! We will be doing upcoming Ancestry DNA tests on other family members and will post in the near future, so if you’re not subscribed, don’t forget to do that and hit the notification bell for upcoming content!
I did enjoy this video! Being a redhead myself I HAD to watch this video! And let me just say your wee redhead is ADORABLE! The story of her birth was so familiar to me because I spent my whole nursing career as a neonatal nurse and I have lived that story so many times, both from the white baby surprising the the African American parents and the red headed baby surprising the white parents who didn’t know until the birth of their child there was a red hair gene on either side let alone both sides and a few times the daddy was a little tiny bit suspicious about where this awesome little redhead came from nor that white baby to the black parents. Having spent my working life in neonatal nursing it gives you a keen interest in genetics, it’s never a dull moment. Thank you for sharing your story, you both are lovely. P.S. it was always an understood rule in the nursery where I worked ALL redheaded babies were mine! Not that I ever got to take any home. 😮❤They really are such a happy little surprise!
I had to laugh. I went through the same with my husband when my youngest was born. My husband's native American and I'm native american,Spanish, English and Jewish but our son came out blonde as can be. It got so quiet when the nurse said look at that curly blonde hair. My husband gave me this death stare.😂😂 I explained that every few generations we have a blonde that shows up.😂😂
My goodness, she is such a cutie!! Thank God for redheads! I and all my children have red hair and yes, the gene for red hair must be inherited from both parents.
I have know 2 couples where both husband and wife have red hair, so all of their kids have red hair. One of those red headed friends is an excellent pianist. She has a TH-cam channel, also. Her name is Jennifer Thompson.
Your daughter is very special and such a beautiful little girl! I was adopted by a black family my ... my mother(adopted mother who is the only mother I have ever known) my sister had red hair and people called her redbone (which she hated by the way) our older siblings teased us as kids calling us "White Girl" which is funny now but hurtful at the time. My mother saved my life as a child and loved me unconditionally as well as my siblings who would take a bullet for me and I for them. I was jealous that my mother spent so much time on my sister's hair..she started putting on conditioner and a cap to make me feel better. My sister who was only two months older than me was profoundly affected by being relentlessly teased by kids at school she died her hair dark and put braids or a weave in when we were young. Now my sister has natural curly red hair and embraces how special her red hair is and wears it proudly!
For sure. My oldest daughter (not introduced yet on the channel) also gets asked often if she’s mixed. We always answer we are Black. Our parents are Black. Their parents are Black.
@@tastx3142 Exactly. At this point they are indeed mixed... But I honestly think there's no pure breed anyone... We are all mixed with something! Doesn't matter how you look in the flesh.
I have a friend that looks biracial, her parents and yes her BIO parents are black. Obviously she inherited all of their European DNA each parent had. You can't predict what 50% of random DNA you get from each parent.
Loling over the hair, in Ireland some of our red heads have red afro hair and I remember the difference it made when afro hairdressers started to open up here and they found that it was possible to actually grow their hair and manage it ! Red hair is also common amongst the berber people of North Africa it would be interesting to see which of the different mutations you carry to allow you to be able to see what specific tribes and clans you inherited them from !
I'm Black with Scottish ancestry (as you might be able to tell by the last name lol). And my grandpa was a red head and he had freckles. My dad and all of his siblings are freckle faced as well but they didn't get the red hair.
The freckles arw caused by the same gean as the red hair. Im mixed. Sicilian. My daughers father is pr and Cuban . no one has red hair in out family. I have freckles he father has slight red highlights. That gean is all mixed in there . when she came out i looked at him like. Where did that come from?. She looked like his little white twin. .. With a big red afro. Her brother came out olive and dark hair. When we went to research it i found out the gean is the same. .
It makes her beautiful , unique and special. I remember watching a video about a Korean toddler with blue eyes and a blonde streak in her hair and people would come up to the parents and ask what was wrong with her. She was beautiful. People can just be rude.
I often watch DNA videos, but you guys cracked me up! So much fun to watch . . . and YAY for six kids! Thank you for keeping the economy going! You seem to be wonderful parents. Blessings!
My sister definitely has the temper thing. Her hair has gotten more brown throughout the decades, but it was like this little girl's hair as a child. We both have freckles.
I have a friend who has twin girls. One looks like mommy other looks like daddy. Light-skin complexion and darker complexion. People are shocked they are twins.
The twins can be uni placental or bi placental, in the 1st case the twins are sharing one ovule, and same placenta, and they look almost identical, and in the 2nd case there are 2 separated fecundated ovules, and the twins are looking almost different.
My ginger child is the chillest and most laidback of my children but they’re all pretty chill. I remember the nurses looking a bit surprised when he was born. Lol My baby looked just like those plump little rosy-cheeked cherubs from a painting. He even had a head full of curly strawberry blonde hair....soooo angelic and precious. Too bad he looked almost exactly like my mother-in-law at the time. Oh well. 😄
That's so funny about your mother-in-law lol. Interestingly, our ginger is pretty easy going also. Once she gets mad though, it's over lol. Thanks for commenting!
I love these African American DNA videos. Seen enough to be able to guess from looks and I put him at 60% African and her at 70%. Pretty accurate. Y'all made this very entertaining ( "Vladimir" 🤣), and your daughters are absolutely stunning.
Thanks for watching! We will be doing upcoming Ancestry DNA tests on other family members and will post in the near future, so if you’re not subscribed, don’t forget to do that and hit the notification bell for upcoming content!
I look similar to him, but lighter skinned at the moment (haven't been getting much sun lately). I'm 80% African, 18 European and 1% SE Asian/Native American. Both yDNA and mtDNA is of African descent. My highest percentage is 46% Nigerian.
What a lovely couple, and very special of you to share the events of your daughter's birth. I am learning so much through these videos about the social culture of the USA coming from Australia. What it shows of the legacy of slavery is that we are all human beings and have so much to give and share. All the very best to you and family.
I don't think I have that redhead temper, I do go hard about things I believe and will let it be known. My brother not a red was known for having a bad temper. My wife says being a libra balances me out 🤷♂️
This was exciting to watch. I took my ancestry test last week and am impatiently waiting for the results... My dad is biracial(white/lebanese mom and and african american/carribean dad) and my mom is african american as far as we know.
Put all those genes together and it made a beautiful you. I think the Iraquie people have the most gene diversity. They even have yellow eyes. I have seen this color on Italians too. Not as often as in Iraq.
Don’t Black people, African 100% produce albinism, yes they do, being a red head isn’t a European trait specifically. I could tell that her husband had a lot of European ancestry, it’s written all over his face. My four children were born with light colored red hair as they got older their hair got darker except my youngest her hair is light brown/light red. However when my son grows his beard the hair on his beard is very light colored/ light red. I have only 1% Ireland and 3% Scotland a very small percentage but their father have more. Her husband looks Russian 😊
English mother of three red haired kids here! To get red hair, the gene must be on BOTH sides - and no matter how far back it is, it will find a way...
Your daughter is simply stunning. I wish her love and luck throughout her life. There's red hair in my family, too. I have two red-headed nieces. We are Eastern European/Russian/Jewish.
My little sister is more fair skinned than I am, and my hair is the color of space while my sister has reddish-bronze hair. Everyone was confused looking at her while she grew up, now it's brown. We're Creole-Trinidadians.
@@aaron0077 Thank for the message! My family started out in "Couva Caroni". I'm pretty sure I have family still there. My Trini roots go as far back as the early 1800s.
That was so interesting. As a hairdresser I was taught that both parents have to carry the red gene in order to have a red headed child and you confirmed that that is the case with you both. I love redheads. My son is a redhead and one of his daughters is also. I can attest to the redhead temper also. I think your daughters are both beautiful.
Thank you! That means you carry the red hair gene too and passed it to your son and granddaughters. She definitely has a unique personality to match her unique looks. We will have updates in the near future, so come visit us again!
Your daughter is absolutely gorgeous!! I am an artist and you may not know, but red haired models are portrait artists' favorites to paint because their coloring is absolutely gorgeous!! Looks like your daughter not only is lovely but has a delightful personality.
A PBS show debunked the myth that many African Americans have some Native American Ancestry. In fact, it's very rare. Most AA have European ancestry with the greatest percentage of European ancestry being Irish. So that great, great, great grandmother that everybody thought was Native American was a bi-racial mix of African and Irish who probably looked Native American.
Mixed race slaves had a difficult time finding employment after slavery ended. They reminded whites too much of the"sins of the father." Those who could pass for white did and those who were brown skinned, with straight hair and European facial features claimed they were Native American to avoid further discrimination.
I’m “white”, but really, really pale-even for someone who’s “white”. I don’t actually like the language of using “white” and “black” to describe race, as I feel like it’s automatically polarizing by definition. In my experience, people are actually shades of brown. We come in pale shades, and we come in dark shades, and every shade in between. Would you be surprised to hear I only believe in one race? Human.
yea, i bet. rejecting language that defines race, or in other words pretending to ignore race (+ the very real implications of race - the color blind approach, is a privilege only white people have. must be nice.
Your children are beautiful, and your red-haired child is uniquely gorgeous. I am 100% European with a red-haired mother, but my hair is so thick and curly I could blow dry it into something like an afro. I am 54% Irish. Genetics is a fascinating subject.
My sister and I both have red hair(it skips generations in my family) , but our younger brother does not. We definitely got a lot of looks growing up, and still do! It was a source of embarrassment for me during my childhood, but now I am definitely proud of it and show it off to its full beauty with an Afro! I am 24 and my sis is 22 and we love our “carrot tops”! Your daughter looked like a mix of my sister and me when we were younger! And yess, embrace the freckles!!! I know when I have a baby the question from my family won’t be “what’s the gender?” it will be “what’s the hair color?”😂 Her hair is gorgeous and I pray that she will always know that! ❤️
I didn't have a chance at being strong if I met a girl with red hair and freckles. If fact I married a girl with red hair and freckles. I always wondered why? Although I'm dark complexion, my DNA say's I'm 11% Irish.
Also, Peyton is a good combination of both of you. Your girls are beautiful and so is Mom! The thing about our ancestry is no one is just 100% of one ethnicity. I’m mostly British and Irish, but have a mix of some other things. I’m like 1 or 2% West African!
I’m brown-skinned but was born with white skin and red hair. Both parents were brown-skinned with black hair. My hair color changed by age 10. Skin color within a year as usual for black children. Red heads run on mother’s side. Original red-head went back about three generations.
@@codechtapia3411 it only works if by chance other family members have done the DNA specifically with the same company. I just got lucky with mine. So in brief I found out at 36 the person named as my dad on my birth certificate wasnt my dad! I then at 40 decided to try and see and did Ancestory dna. Oddly enough my estranged half sister (who I was meant to share the same dad as), had also done the same, so I had clear defined mum vs dad DNA. Luckily I did get a match with whom turns out to be a Great Aunty.....who has alzheimer's. So my questions got odd answers. I then recieved a message from another member of my biological dads side by chance. With a who are you, urm well haha. So through working out who was my closest link, searching people in UK, finding addresses based on old family information of areas, some letter writing, with mixed responses. Eventually a second cousin read my letter at his dads and contacted me. At first I was denied by the Head of my new found Scottish clan, now I'm accepted. Yet to meet due to covid as we had only just met through social media and phone calls. I finally found my kin, we all so far got on. My great uncle was blown away about how alike we are. Unfortunately my dad was already dead. That's the sad part. The ? That was over my head my whole life has gone. You know when you're being lied to and treated differently.

Hopefully she comes back as a half aunt and I will know one of her half brothers is my dad. Oh I’m 41 now.
I love this. I was in the room when my red headed nephew was born. We had an Asian doctor and she was very blunt about saying that he was a white baby. He too was pale with copper red hair that hasn’t darkened. He’s a true red head, eyebrows eyelashes and everywhere else he grows hair. People say the crazies things like is his hair dyed when he was still a baby. He’s also has a light complexion but there are other redheads sprinkled in the family but he seems to be the only one that his hair hasn’t darkened. He’s currently 13 and I adore his red hair!
My best friend is a red head. I vividly remembering staying over at her house as a child and sitting at the dinner table. Her father must have said something to annoy her because I see a pork chop flying past me and hitting her father in the head. She was about 9 or 10 at the time. Luckily her father saw the humour in it.
I figure she would be between 70-75% and between 25-30% European. I think he's going to be between 55 to 60% African and 40-45% European. He looks very admixed.
This reminds me of my birth🤣😂🤣😂 I was born in 1978 in South Korea, to a Black Father and a Korean Mother. Now mind you most Black babies come out lighter then our final color, and our hair isn't as tightly curled as our final texture. Well I came out looking like a full blooded Korean baby, and my Korean Grandmother got so nervous, because she never seen a mixed baby before or a Black baby. So she tried to take my Mom and escape to the country, and then questioned her if my Daddy was actually some Korean dude...My mom was laughing because my Dad and her were married and had been together for years by this time. Well my lovely Black features eventually came through, lips got thick, that inky Black silky straight hair turned to thick luscious Afro curls, and the only thing I actually inherited was maybe light skin(still darker than most Korean folks) and my eyes. But now I look nothing like either! I look like my Polynesian ancestors, my Hawaiian family. Trippy yeah? I always get mistaken for Polynesian, Native, or Mixed. And my hair color, it turned this dark almost black olive green under toned, red in the sun color...what's called in Hawai'i 'ehu. By the way your kids are LOVELY! And you guys are a lovely couple and family!
My bf is Black, mom us Black as well from Louisiana and Dad as well, from Texas. And how Black parents cab have all diffrent color of babies. Your little one is an angel🥰. God bless

I've always found DNA so interesting. There is so much untold history in it. I'm Portuguese and super curious to know what my ancestry is cause Portuguese people have been all over the world for centuries. People have told me I look Arabian because of my curly dark hair, others have told me I look Italian or Spanish, someone has even said I looked a bit Asian because of my eyes 😅. It's great that you got to know your ancestry!
I loved this show. First time watching. I was told I had red/blonde hair as a baby-preschool. I was called the‘devil child’ because I wouldn’t smile on pictures. I also beat up kids that picked on my sister.
@@LifewithDrTrishVarner It makes me wonder about my ancestor. I had a dna expert tell me my haplogroup is because of the Atlantic Slave Trade, and I wonder...would he hate what I look like now or be proud that I don't have to deal with what he did?
@@tomjackson5847 He might just be glad that his lineage continued regardless of how different you look. Many of us probably would be surprised about where some of our ancestors originated. At the end of the day though, we are all just one human race. Did your results show your percentage of African ancestry?
@@BigLyfe09 I expected to see that I had African, just not the African haploroup, as someone who passes as white, until they hear my father was mexican.
Thank you so much Dr Varner, this is a great video (your husband is hilarious). I guessed Nigerian for you and Senegal/Mali for your husband. When I got my ancestry genetics tested I was not surprised, as a White person from the South, that I have a small amount of African and an equally small amount of Indigenous ancestry. I would never have known if I hadn't done the test. Our genes, more than our faces, tell the much of the story of our country and I find it fascinating, as well as liberating in a sense.
The story about the woman inappropriately reaching into your car to touch your daughter’s hair reminds me of my mom growing up. Before my mom, the redhead gene skipped a couple generations, so there was a time my mom was the only redhead in the family. Grandma and Grandpa both had black hair. There were a few times when my mom was small where strangers have touched my mom’s hair or asked my grandma why she had her daughter’s hair dyed. I’m a redhead, and strangers would touch my hair when I was little, too. Let’s normalize NOT touching other people’s children for any reason!… Unless that child is in immediate danger, of course. I’ll pull anyone’s child out of harm’s way.
LOL, love this. I am black so was my husband. My daughter, best in the world ,was born with very light skin and red straight hair. No one said anything, or even looked like they wanted to say anything. Decades later, 23&me confirmed is the daughter of my husband. She also has freckles. Ha ha

Thank you to the 98% of you who are so kind, funny, and respectful.
The question about where the red hair comes from is not ours but the numerous people who stop and ask us this on a regular basis (almost daily).
genetics.thetech.org/ask-a-geneticist/what-are-my-chances-having-red-haired-child
The majority of Black Americans are mixed with up to 25% European ancestry.
genetics.thetech.org/ask/ask67
However, that is not where our family members got red hair.
medlineplus.gov/genetics/condition/oculocutaneous-albinism/
Remember also that race is a social construct and not a biological one.

www.sciencemag.org/news/2014/12/genetic-study-reveals-surprising-ancestry-many-americans

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much for watching and commenting! 😊
@Citygirl Poland there's nothing wrong with red hair. they are not a majority in the UK, though. even there are more of them in ireland and scotland...
and there are african people who are naturally redheads... just like there are a lot of african albinos in some parts of east africa
@Citygirl Poland lots of redheaded kids get mercilessly bullied in the UK. Natural red hair is really rare.
Yes, my story. Exactly
Genetics and family history are fascinating and your family DNA sounds wonderful and makes for a very interesting mix.

That's awesome
Fun fact: Vlad is Russian Romanian name lol
You guys are hilarious, loved the video. I went to school with a girl who was light skinned, freckled, curly red hair and green eyes. Her 3 sisters had light brown eyes and all had different shades of brown hair, only one of them had curly hair, and all had a different skin tone. They were all beautiful. Their father used to joke that they're the reason he had to get rid of the milkman and buy a cow.
omg her hair is beautiful
Thank you! She thinks it makes her smarter lol. Thanks for watching! Come back to visit us again.
My mother had red hair with freckles, my great nephew has red hair and was very light skin and his older brother has black hair and brown skin. When he was a baby I called him carrot head, but my mother put a stop to that name. I am 65 years old and I keep saying I should take the DNA TEST
My mother was really light skin with red hair. And oh yeah she had a temper. She's with the angels now.
True but it can go back 14 generations. Between his dad and her Scottish/Irish ancestry, there you go!
What about in cases wherein there are strands of red hair randomly spread throughout ones head and beard particularly when the rest of the hair is black?
@@DaggerSecurity I am an American Descendant Of Slavery and my hair was as you described when I was growing up.....there were areas of my hair that were reddish......
Speak on it ... 👏🏾🙌🏾👏🏾🙌🏾 🗣🗣🗣
Yes it's not caused by cacausion heritage. It's the gene mutation.
Today I am going to talk about "wed" hair! Just adorable!
Tha k you so much for watching! ❤️
Thank you. I’m glad you stopped by. Hope you come visit our channel again. All the best to you! ❤️❤️
I’m a black ginger. I do know that my 3 times great grandmother on my father’s side was Irish and she married a Native American. I’m very light skinned, with red hair, freckles and high cheek bones. I get asked all the time where I go for my hair color.......like black can’t have natural red hair. Lol
My husband is the same. It has to come from.both sides though. Mom and dad.
On my late father’s side there were some reds. My late paternal grandpa said his father’s mother was Irish and father Native American.
Black people (talking about ethnically African people) without other ethnicities mixed in don’t have red hair unless it’s a mineral deficiency.
@@valeriareed7234 @ Carlo Santana, All of this is very interesting, Thank you both for enlightening me.
I do feel the more children you have the farther back the genetic makeup will reach! My family varies in hue too.
@ BlaccTony69 so so true.
65% of African Americans have between 10-30% European ancestry. Genetic recombination does happen.
@@MariE-bz2eq But there are black Nigerians that have produced white children. The DNA studies showed no European genes in a particular case I can think of. It's a mystery while the child is white (non-Albino).
I too am a natural red-headed and so was my brother. My Mom had red hear and she got it from her father. As a child, people use to stare at me in awe.
I’m half Polynesian half Irish with red hair, my sister is half black half Irish with red hair. She looks just like my sister hahah and redheads can access their adrenaline way quicker than any other hair color. Love this video🤙🏼
That’s so cool! I never knew that. Thanks for watching and commenting!
why can they access it quicker?
Where does your polynesian come from

My husband gave me this death stare.😂😂
I explained that every few generations we have a blonde that shows up.😂😂
That’s funny. You have a similar story. Does your son still have blonde hair?
@@LifewithDrTrishVarner yes he does. It is just a little darker but kind of a dirty blonde.
Same with us. Weare Cherokee and Dutch
Apparently every white american is part native
My goodness, she is such a cutie!! Thank God for redheads! I and all my children have red hair and yes, the gene for red hair must be inherited from both parents.
Thank you! That's so cool that you have a family of redheads. Thanks for stopping by! Feel free to come visit again.
Lol I love how she was talking about her hair helping her do math!
I love how kids think! Thanks for watching. 😊
I already know she gonna be asked for the rest of her life if she “biracial/mixed” LMAOO until she shows them that both of her parents are black.
For sure. My oldest daughter (not introduced yet on the channel) also gets asked often if she’s mixed. We always answer we are Black. Our parents are Black. Their parents are Black.
Well, according to the DNA, the heritage of both is mixed, especially the dad is a higher percentage, but obviously identify themselves as black.
@@melvawages7143 Agreed, my full sibling is white passing and I'm definitely not even though I'm also largely European
So cool. Thanks for sharing with us!
Blessings!
Thank you so much! 🥰🥰
So quiet you could hear a mouse fart😂😂😂 Your husband is funny.
He thinks he’s hilarious lol.
As a fellow ginger parent, these kids are no joke. Tempers, pain tolerance, higher fevers and their stubbornness are all a challenge for sure.
Yes! You get it. That’s the truth lol. Thanks for watching and commenting.
In my family the redhead gene comes along with the ornery gene. Every time.
@staircase2 Opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one. Seems you weren't satisfied stopping there, you've actually aspired to be one. 👍
Do red heads really run higher fevers? My sister is a red head and she constantly had ear infections and high fevers while I did not.
My sister definitely has the temper thing. Her hair has gotten more brown throughout the decades, but it was like this little girl's hair as a child. We both have freckles.
Your daughter is just beautiful. I’m sure many will be jealous of her hair. 😊🙏🏻
I Am..
It's GORGEOUS
Sorry😳
I have a friend who has twin girls. One looks like mommy other looks like daddy. Light-skin complexion and darker complexion. People are shocked they are twins.
Thanks for watching and sharing!
That’s my dad and his brother - not twins. Mixed family my dad’s skin is white and my uncle’s black. It’s funny because they look very alike.
The twins can be uni placental or bi placental, in the 1st case the twins are sharing one ovule, and same placenta, and they look almost identical, and in the 2nd case there are 2 separated fecundated ovules, and the twins are looking almost different.
No 2 humans are the same and that includes twins.
There’s nothing wrong with Native Americans. I love ❤️ Native Americans. I love every race in the World
I love these African American DNA videos. Seen enough to be able to guess from looks and I put him at 60% African and her at 70%. Pretty accurate. Y'all made this very entertaining ( "Vladimir" 🤣), and your daughters are absolutely stunning.

I look similar to him, but lighter skinned at the moment (haven't been getting much sun lately). I'm 80% African, 18 European and 1% SE Asian/Native American. Both yDNA and mtDNA is of African descent. My highest percentage is 46% Nigerian.
I got my results and I'm 64% European (26% German), 35% African (~12% Yoruba), and 1% West Indian.
@Tribal King No. I stated it correctly.
My hair was reddish-brown as a child. As I grow older, it went darker. Now I have speckles of gray.

What a lovely couple, and very special of you to share the events of your daughter's birth. I am learning so much through these videos about the social culture of the USA coming from Australia. What it shows of the legacy of slavery is that we are all human beings and have so much to give and share. All the very best to you and family.
I love red hair . Your daughter is so cute.😁Payton looks like dad.
Thank you! Payton definitely resembles her dad, especially when she was born. Thanks for watching!
She is precious. One redhead to another that temper will serve her later in life. She will take up for herself.
Thank you!
I don't think I have that redhead temper, I do go hard about things I believe and will let it be known. My brother not a red was known for having a bad temper. My wife says being a libra balances me out 🤷♂️
The little girl with red hair is so cute in looks and spirit!
This was exciting to watch. I took my ancestry test last week and am impatiently waiting for the results... My dad is biracial(white/lebanese mom and and african american/carribean dad) and my mom is african american as far as we know.
Awesome. It’s hard waiting for the results. You should have a lot of diversity in your results. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks for watching and sharing!
Thank you for explaining this false eurocentric theory.
English mother of three red haired kids here! To get red hair, the gene must be on BOTH sides - and no matter how far back it is, it will find a way...

Yes. I think I might have watched that same show. I’ve seen a few shows debunking the theory about Native American ancestry.
Mixed race slaves had a difficult time finding employment after slavery ended. They reminded whites too much of the"sins of the father." Those who could pass for white did and those who were brown skinned, with straight hair and European facial features claimed they were Native American to avoid further discrimination.
@@deborahcarson4157 Makes sense.
But do you know who mingled with the Irish.. The have whole irish and native tribes
It’s not rare in my family though. We actually have Native ancestry also and it’s pretty evident. ✌🏽
You guys are so cute together. There is no telling what genes come through. Your red headed daughter is adorable.
Human.
yes i agree completely!
yea, i bet.
rejecting language that defines race, or in other words pretending to ignore race (+ the very real implications of race - the color blind approach, is a privilege only white people have.
must be nice.
Your children are beautiful, and your red-haired child is uniquely gorgeous. I am 100% European with a red-haired mother, but my hair is so thick and curly I could blow dry it into something like an afro. I am 54% Irish. Genetics is a fascinating subject.

I figure she would be between 70-75% and between 25-30% European. I think he's going to be between 55 to 60% African and 40-45% European. He looks very admixed.
yall are too much, had me laughing the whole time. beautiful family!
Thank you so much! Great story about your birth and your family. Thanks for sharing!
My bf is Black, mom us Black as well from Louisiana and Dad as well, from Texas. He did his DNA test, abd cane back with 23% Nigerian , 16% Mali, 3% Jewish, 1% Russian, 1% German, 3% French, Louisiana Creo, Wales, don't remember the rest. He was born with red hair, his mom is light skin dad is not. Our kids cane our one lighter than the other. I think it's so fascinating how DNA works!! And how Black parents cab have all diffrent color of babies. Your little one is an angel🥰. God bless
Wow. That's awesome. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Your Daughter looks just like her Daddy!🤗
Your whole family is beautiful. With such a high proportion of Eastern Europe DNA (and it not being an ethnicity associated with the Transatlantic Slave Trade) it must be quite a close relative! A grandparent or great-grandparent.
Thanks for watching. You are right. We are sure his grandfather must have been Eastern European. We just don't know who he was yet. We are on a journey to find out. Subscribe and hit the notification bell if you would like to go with us on the journey!
@@LifewithDrTrishVarner When I did mine, I found that not all my mother's mother's side of the family had died in the Holocaust as we had thought. One of her great-aunts escaped and we were matched to her son and grandchildren. DNA exploration really is emotional and interesting. x
@@confusedclarinetgirl Wow! That’s wonderful!
Thanks for watching. I hope you get all your questions answered soon. 😊
I loved this show. First time watching. I was told I had red/blonde hair as a baby-preschool. I was called the‘devil child’ because I wouldn’t smile on pictures. I also beat up kids that picked on my sister.
We are all a big happy mix of many, many ethnicities. Thus the reason we need to embrace we are all intertwined.
Love the comment "that's why his booty is flat🤗🤗"
LOL...I love my husband, but his booty is flatter than a pancake. Thanks for watching!
I never knew my father, but, when I did my DNA test, I found out I had an African haplogroup. Thought I was just going to be Scottish and Mexican!
I think these DNA tests are game changers. We are able to find out so much more about our backgrounds. Thanks for watching!
Mexican, like most all latino people, have a variation of European, Native, and yes- African. It likely comes from being Mexican.
Ha ha
You can relate Lol! Thanks for watching and sharing. Feel free to subscribe if you would like to continue following our story. ❤️
"Like white, white, CASPER!"...Lol 😂😁😂
I loved the couple banter, made even more fun to watch😃
Cute sweet girl.

I'm a black ginger and I'm here for this story... cause it's nobody I know in my family with red hair so I might be the milkman's baby 🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️
Love it. Have you considered doing the Ancestry DNA test? Don't forget to subscribe. We will do a video of our girls' DNA results when we get that information back. Thanks for watching!
@@LifewithDrTrishVarner I did mine with family tree dna and they recently updated it to include Ireland like 5% so I thought that was cool. I'm 40 now so thr craziest thing that happened when I was a kid was people constantly scrutinizing my mother for 'dyeing' my hair. And yes we do have tempers ❤❤❤
@@lpringle99 We still get asked if we dye our daughter's hair lol. They started asking us that when she was like 4-months-old. Isn't that crazy? lol
@@LifewithDrTrishVarner I still tease my mom about being the milkman's baby also none of my kids have red hair like mine so I'm wondering if my grands will
@@lpringle99 It will show up again. We are wondering if any of our grandkids will have red hair too.
Thank you. I have a redhead child. She is mixed. I'm Russian and polish. Her dad is African American and Chinese. I subscribed and gave you a thumbs up. Good video.
Your daughter is gorgeous. We had a similar experience. I had a c section I was numbed from stomach down. My daughter was handed to my husband and she was pure white with black hair though. The surgeon was cracking jokes to keep the mood light so I thought he handed my husband a doll.
People would ask me who's baby is she and a friend asked if the baby was my husband's.. for real for real?
As black people, our DNA is extremely diverse.
That’s funny. Yep we had the same experience lol. Thanks for sharing! ❤️
That's hilarious
