    I will never get tired of seeing this. So proud. And yet everyone in the pool was swimming their hearts out for their country. So, a little heart goes out for all. Dennis Cometti, greatest sports caller of all time.

    Definitely one of the top 5 best swimmers of all-time in the history of the sport! Few swimmers have had such a powerful kick. What a competitor and nothing but a credit to swimming. SYDNEY 2000 what an Olympics! Thanks for the incredible memories Ian Thorpe!!

    I was lucky to see and visit Sydney, Australia in 1997 and 1998. I was in the US Navy at the time...Ian Thorpe is one of those Olympic swimmers I admire the most, beside Alexander Popov and Pieter Van den Hoogenband. He's the reason I got so interested in swimming, he inspired me to learned to swim freestyle. We miss you Ian Thorpe, I got saddened that your swimming career didn't last very long.

    I think the Americans, with the exception of Anthony Ervin's lead off leg, all made the mistake of going out too fast in order to make up the deficit, because you can see them fade heavily down the last 15 meters. Australia's swimmers did the exact opposite.

    • @danielcavalier711
      @danielcavalier711 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I expected that from Gary Hall, he specialised in 50m freestyle, so it was natural for him to go out very fast. Thorpe was a endurance freestyler, maybe that's the reason, knowing the american freestylers, to put him in anchor

      Um, no mate. You are thinking of Peter Garrett, who yes, did "abandon" the music scene, but not to swim. He became a politician caused a heap of controversy, before wisely quitting that and returning to form as a signer once more.

    And we saw Gary Hall's comments about smashing the Australians like rock guitars was completely taken out of context. He was complimenting the Aussies in that article, and everyone just focuses on that one comment.

    • @jbobbster
      @jbobbster 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Actually, know. Not an offensive comment. He's complimenting the Australians, and he says his biased opinion was that "we'lll smash them like rock guitars." Not an offensive comment. He said the the US always rises to the occasion.
      He compliments the Aussies, and makes one opinion, and suddenly, he's being said to have guaranteed US victory.

    • @4600norm

      I agree it wasn't offensive, but it was stupid. Don't ever give your opposition "bulletin board" material to motivate them. That is why so many athletes give very boring, bland interviews.
