I have watched EVERY opening ceremony of the Olympics ever broadcast since 1968........Sydney 2000 was without doubt the greatest that has ever been performed.........The Olympics themselves were the most brilliantly planned, organised, run and trouble free in ALL respects of any held since 1956..... and they even beat Melbourne. They made a profit with future world tourism to this country and EVERY one of the sporting venues and accommodation sites are still being used!!!!!!!.......... Transport and accommodation was a dream. Organization was brilliant, security precautions stunning. Nothing will ever come close to the 2000 games
I've watch the Olympics since 2004. Basically I first watch it when I was 9 years old.
Pedro Australians must be racist to have revolved their games around the aborigines. Most Australians love the indigenous people, even though most of them live thousands of kms apart and have never met any. Many, many Australians do what they can to help aborigines in their professional capacity, and all are supported financially by the government. It has only just dawned on authorities that their social problems are based on trauma which is passed on from one generation to the next. Hopefully their psychological problems can be addressed directly in future. The actions/inactions of governments does not reflect the attitudes of the people
Yeah ... as stated in this video, the whole bloody country stopped to watch Kathy Freeman and 'vibe' he on, after which she did a victory lap with BOTH flags. Exactly how ignorant can one person be? The hilarious thing is that in the real world, Australia is easily one of the LEAST racist countries; which is not something I am just saying, it's been shown in numerous worldwide studies. One quarter of current Australians were born overseas somewhere for goodness sake!n Which is why Australia has also been found, in numerous studies, to be one of the most multicultural countries in the world. Of course there are some racists; sadly they are everywhere, in every country. However there are very few in Australia and, as pointed out by - +j Phillips - the vast majority of Australians are disgusted by what was done to the Aborigines and would do almost anything to solve the problem. Unfortunately though, it's a problem that has no easy answers and needs to be solved over the course of generations. The Aborigines know that, which is why Kathy Freeman carried BOTH flags. Let's hope ignoramuses like poor, uneducated, clueless Pedro don't make matters worse by spreading their hateful racist bile. It's funny that a huge racist like Pedro - whose comments are the VERY DEFINITION of racism - is calling an entire nation racist!

I had goose bumps all the way through this video. As a very proud Australian, I may be bias, but these games were definitely the, friendliest, happiest and brought out the best in every athlete.
I was there, the streets and events were ALIVE!

As a Brit who was living in New Zealand at the time, there was definitely something exceptional about the Sydney Olympics that the world had not seen before. I believe Sydney became the blueprint for really how to put on an Olympic Games.

The most amazing thing about the 4x100m Freestyle relay final is that EVERY Australian swimmer was headed by his US opponent at some stage in his leg except Klim who swam a world record.......EVERY single one of them swam the greatest relay leg that they ever swam in their careers................ ESPECIALLY Ashley Callis. His leg was stupendous the greatest adjusted 100m freestyle that he swam in his entire career....He gave Thorpe the winning margin.........The sound when Thorpe went past Hall in the last 4 strokes was almost DEAFENING!!...When Dennis says the roof was lifet off the stadium, I can tell you from personal experience he is 100% absolutely correct!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was the number one best Olympic game in history and my favourite olympic game ever i am so proud to watch the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games i will never forget the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games including The Opening And Closing Ceremony and 16 Days Of Competition. I was 14. If memory serves me correctly it was school holidays in Australia at that time too and we got an additional one or two weeks break added on to the end of the usual two due to occur at that time of year. I remember going down to the John Whitton Bridge at Rhodes to watch the fireworks along the Parramatta River during the closing ceremony.
i was a volunteer at Darling Harbour men & women weightliftin A finals , never forget Naim boombed in the snatch & the Iranian took gold in the Supers , i also met my current wife who competed for Nigeria in the same Olympics , thats why Sydney 2000 Olympics meant so much to me.
Dorothea Mackellar's Poem...."My Country" is one of if not the greatest national representative poems ever written. She penned it in 1908 while only 19 years old and in England....Originally called "Core of my Heart"...for any Australian who knows this land and loves it, it is really the National Anthem that has never had music put to it!!!!!!!!!!!
I have loved the poem since I first heard it when I was 6 years old....almost 50 years ago.....................Its use at the beginning of the video is great (even if they do get one word wrong...rugged instead of ragged)

I have watched the summer Olympics since 2008 and the Winter Olympics since 2010,I never watched the 2000 Summer Olympics, but this video shows me why Australia pulled off the greatest summer Olympics ever.
This gave me chills! These games are one of my favourite childhood memories, I remember the torch being run through my home town just like in those clips. Watching it on TV all day in the school holidays and going to see some of the events. Proudest time to be an Aussie!

I remember the hype for these Olympics was insane. Many months after the games I got to hold the torch, it was heavy to hold in my memory.

Michele Tims was a PE teacher at my high school. I got to see her Silver medal from that year on display at an after school program fundraising event. Obviously not something she had with her frequently. So it was very special and almost 20 years later it's still a core memory.
I was 9 when the Olympics were here in Sydney. I remember my parents being so excited! They took my sister and I to watch the torch race at different points which at the time i was kind of, like, a bit underwhelmed not really understanding haha But as a 28 year old now, i would love that! haha
At school we got to dress in our nationalities colours and did our own opening ceremony which was really cool.
My parents managed to get tickets for softball (my mum played softball for fun so that was cool), equestrian and mountain cycling. My parents weren't very wealthy but they saved up and got us tickets to these events and i am very grateful now!!
It was just a really nice time to be living in Sydney. I hope we have it here again :)

I was so young when the 2000 summer Olympics were held in Australia and watching the news coverage of the games as an adult, I can clearly see why Australia pulled off the greatest summer Olympics ever.

The most wonderful and best experience of my life, was volunteering at the Sydney Olympics for the whole 12 days as a NAATI Mandarin-English-Mandarin interpreter with Language Services. Every language had an Aussie volunteer interpreter from Australia. There were no imports from other countries. Juan Antonio Samaranch declared "The most dedicated and wonderful volunteers ever". Without the volunteers these games would not have been the historic wonderful success that they were.
Some bright spark gave a goodie bag to everyone in the seats. It had a disposable camera with a flash. So all the twinkling lights are charming and full of good memories, but cheaper than the LED thing at the London Opening Ceremony.

I watched this from my home in los angeles..so moving...so inspiring.
I love all of these Olympic Documentaries. After watching this one, though, this one is right up there with the LA Olympic Games. However, where is the 1988 Summer Seoul Olympic Documentary. I have been looking for it and I can't find it. Also, Bud Greenspan deserved the Olympic Order Award. RIP Bud Greenspan. Your love for the Olympic Games will go on and on forever.
The LA film started the series of cheap, boring, dull and imaginationless olympic films. The tradition of arty, interesting, intriguing, innovative olympic films which started with Tokyo`64 "Tokyo Olympiad" ended with Moscow`80 movie "Sports -- You are Peace".

I'm a Costa Rican who saw these games on TV during 17 days back in 2000. Never had I seen such outstanding and well organized olympics. Thank you Australia, and look forward to Brisbane 2032. Hopefully I will be there in person.
Wow what a doco and the weight Cathy Freeman had on her shoulders of my nation was epic. Sadly I couldn't make the 2000 games as I was living in Melbourne at the time and was on the dole. But I can't wait for our next games in my city Brisbane 2032. I went to the Melburne 2006 (Was living in Melbourne) and Gold Coast (Was living in Brisbane) 2018 Commonwealth games and loved it. This was the first Olympics (both Summer and Winter) that I was alive for. I was a 1 year old back in 2000...man, I wish I was 11 or 21 instead.

I was born in 2000 (the year of the Sydney Summer Olympics), the first Summer Olympics I watched is Beijing 2008 but the first Winter Olympics I watched is Sochi 2014. But I don't remember if I watched the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. I wanted to since I'm Canadian.

I was 12 which was a great time to be alive for it, one of my best memories. The atmosphere around the whole country was electric. I really hope we get to host another games in Australia in my life time. It's just the most amazing thing, I don't know if anything can ever compare to 2000 though!
Cathy Freeman was under immense pressure - imagine having a 10 storey high picture of yourself on a building next to Sydney Harbour Bridge, knowing the whole country was watching your race.

Spot Britons Katharine Merry who got the bronze and Donna Fraser who finished fourth in the same race. Steve Redgrave's fifth gold medal in rowing is another notable highlight. i would do anything to go back there. I was about 10 when this was on, living in sydney i has many friends who contributed to making this the best olympics ever. I was so proud to be an aussie when i could hear the fireworks from my bedroom window.

I happened to put my laptop on autoplay and this is what I awoke to.I'm from the US and I was still amazed and nearly in tears.Amazing, simply amazing. I saw a video of an African that eyed a deer (can't recall the exact designation) and merely ran after it until the deer tired then speared it or however he took it down,just ran after it and outlasted the animal, kinda nutty,MINTY.
From the time I was 16 yrs old when I first became interested in Boxing I wanted to compete in Olympic competition. It's up to me to train hard and accomplish my goal. It's not easy I will be older than I am now in 2024-25 yr.
The complete History/Olympic History ???? without a mention of the one man who made Olympic history.... Sir Steve Redgrave and his 5th consecutive gold medal..... the first to do so in an endurance sport. A truly amazing Olympian and a historic achievement.

A wonderful summary of that epic athletics programme of September 25, 2000. But how disappointing that the men's (and women's) 10,000m finals won't have anything like as dramatic setting in 2016

I had it but when my wife and I separated in 2005 I threw it out ...But stupid me. I had the womens and mens hockey...Simon Fairweather ...every swimming and sailing medalists...rowing and canoeing...cycling etc, etc

Just watching the raw broadcast version on TV. Most of the contents relies on the TV/SOBO broadcasting tapes instead of 35 mm films. Hence the need to retain the aspect ratio.
