If your Class C RV - Onan 4000 generator stops running after 5 seconds.

  • My Class C RV's Cummins Onan RV QG 4000 generator waste working. It would start fine, but shut off after about 5 seconds every time I tried it. After shutting off the light would blink 3 times indicating that it needed servicing. After doing some research I found that this was a common problem and that the carburetor was likely clogged. The standard fix for this is to replace the carburetor at a cost of hundreds of dollars... too much for an almost new generator. After applying some carb cleaner and fidgeting with the choke or throttle my generator started working! Hope this Grottons on the Go video helps someone else out there.

My generator ran fine for 15 minutes and then would shut off, pretty consistent duration before shutting off. I changed fuel filter and spark plug, no change. I had changed the oil, precisely following directions to fill oil to just below fill line on dipstick. I finally sucked out some motor oil to lower to lower range on the dipstick. That fixed it. Whew!

I think in this case, the carb cleaner acted as starter fluid. It basically allowed you to get the engine running. It's likely you had some bad fuel in the float bowl. By getting it to run a few times, you managed to suck some good gas into the carb, at which point it began running better and better. If there was only minor gunk in the jets, the flow of fuel may have cleaned them enough that you're OK now. At some point, you may need to pull out the float bowl and blow out your jets with that carb cleaner, but if you run it often enough, maybe it'll remain happy. Good luck!

I had issues of crank, no start with a touch under half tank of gas after the RV sat for a month in storage. I'm no mechanic but thank God for youtube. I removed about 3/4 pint of oil from the generator, filled gas tank and still crank but no start so I tappped on the fuel pump with a small wrench and it started and I left it running for an hour and 35 minutes. I shut it down and ten minutes later restarted it for five minutes and I shut it down but I will order a fuel pump, air and fuel filter to have on hand.

I think you got lucky on the trouble shooting. For the Onan Generators the three flashes only that there is a fault. To determine what the actual fault is you need to let the indicator flash three times than press the primer side down and release. What you will get is the three flashes then a pause and then a succession of flashes (count these). Most common error is 3 flashes followed by 6 flashes - typically low fuel pressure or no fuel on LP. My main point is that you need to follow the step above to determine actual fault code and then Chen owners manual or the Cummins website for the corresponding fault description and corrective action to take.

Hey thanks this is great info. Like I said I'm definitely not a pro. I had heard that the low fuel was a common issue and that the generator wouldnt run if the gas engine was less than a 1/4 full. For some reason what I did worked for me, and I haven't had any issues since!

Tks! Throttle on carbonator needed some WD-40...

After you've eliminated fuel and spark as the culprit - 5 seconds and shut down indicates magneto is bad. It's a big job to change it.

This is how I fixed. In my case of ( I can't start my generator) it's has been two years since last time was running. I started by checking oil level, gasoline more than 1\4 tank in my RV, sparkplug checked for good spark, also cleaned the carburetor and even installed new one but same situation, check wires and found some has been damaged by rats so I replaced them, by this time it started but stay runing only by keep pushing the switch on all time, so I knew it was electrical problem from the engine itself, so I took the generator out from my RV to work in my garage. I disassemble the unit by removing the cover, then the cooling fan until I was at the engine brushes area and this is what I found: one more wire chewed by rats plus the stinky nest in the middle of the generator motor coil, I fixed the wire and sanded the cooper contacts where the brushes are sitting becouse they were real duty with old urine from the rats. I assembled everything back together and bingo it's runing like a champion, for this project materials involved was about $60.00 including an aftermarket new carburetor (online) and harmonic balancer/steering wheel puller (available at any autoparts $24.00) to pull the aluminum fan out. Just keep in mind that (Eny engine run smooth if gasoline and DC current aren't interrupted) Also if you have a onan microlite 4000 like mine, don't run it for more than a minute without the cover becouse you'll cook the engine real fast, also keep the eye on the aluminium fan and your fingers after cranking it in case you missing one, just kidding!!! If this can help eaven one person it'll make me more happy, thanks for reading!!!

My oil was overfilled and I believe it reached the combustion chamber. I need advice on how to clean the piston / cylinder. I know this because there is oil on the spark plugs. Plus, the oil dip stick indicated it was above the fill line.

@@bluyetiinc7553 yes, I clean the cylinder and put new gas in the tank. Then I ran the engine on high to help burn it out. Today, it rans like a champ. Now issues.

Thank you for the video. My generator is giving me the over crank code. How can I fix this?

I'm not sure, sorry. Short of talking with a service rep, I don't have any advice.

over crank code comes up any time you hold the start button down for more then 30 seconds and if it dont start after 30 seconds of cranking it will stop cranking and flass the code.

i was having a problem with my govener arm not properly adjusted which was causing it not to run correctly. If you can keep the engine running my manually adjusting the throttle with your finger you might have the same problem i did

Frankly, I don't think you fixed anything. Spaying cleaner into the carb only cleans the throat of the carb, not all the internal parts where the real problems develop. Hand throttling it isn't going to change anything either. You didn't seem to check the code, which isn't the light blinking 3 times.
Check the manual and get back to us. Also, learn how to use the primer.

Lol why knock the guy,its fixed until it gums up again! If he runs it monthly id say its ok! He can even cycle some seafoam through his tank once in a while! The way i see it he saved at least a $500 shop bill! Smart man! Simple fix!

All these Gens need the California Altitude Cap taken off the Jet and richened up.

    • @trustme7731
      @trustme7731 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@1320fastback The altitude adjustment only leans the fuel mixture as the elevation rises. If you don't do this as needed, it will run to rich consuming more fuel, increase emissions, foul the spark plug and make it run poorly. It has nothing to do with california or any evil government plot.
