This is an absolute mess regarding these generators and there should be a class action lawsuit against Cummins for pushing these onto the public. These machines cause people to waste time and money and the manufacturer should be held accountable for this.

Well, apparently Cummins Onan and this dealers are still completely unaware some 5 years later! We have a brand new generator (2023) that has the same dipstick and thrown fault code 36. I just checked the oil level and sure enough it's showing full. Thanks for the video!

God bless you brother. From a 67 year old fleet mechanic that has been in the business beginning in 1977 .Sometimes you discover something like this and it can save a ton of heart acke and money. I am working on basically the same gen with this issue but had oil leaking and worn out belt ,tensioner cracked belt drive coupler ect .I scince youtube has so much valuable information research most repair jobs that I have not done numerous times for just such information that in so valuable. Thank you for this information as the intermittent cut offs was the straw that broke the camels back with the customer wanting a 1000 hour service done. I feel I would have had a comeback without this video..even if just because I filled it up to the perceived proper level.

So after changing the oil & filter in my Onan RV QG 5500 EVAP Generator, I put in exactly 1.6 qts to obtain your recommended mark on the oil dipstick. Just in case anyone was curious how much to actually add vs the original amount of 2.0 quarts listed in the manual. Hope this helps as well! Thank you for the great heads up!! You saved me a lot of $ taking mine to the dealer as well. You should make & patent a new dipstick!

Yep that was the problem! The "generator specialist" at our rv dealer rebuilt our generator, then returned it to us with overfilled oil. We were steaming mad, found this video, returned to the "generator specialist" this morning and explained what he did wrong. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.

I have the same generator in my 2018 Winnebago. I can say the gentleman is correct in his statements. The fill line is incorrectly marked too high on the dipstick. For me, it was approximately 6 ounces high. I removed the excess oil and my generator ran fine and stopped killing after 15 to 20 mins! Thanks for the video!

Thanks Dave! This tip fixed my Onan Emerald Plus 5000. Saved me $$$$. Generator had gotten worse as time went on & wouldn't run more than 5 minutes. Oil level was almost to top of dipstick when I changed the oil. I refilled to just above the add mark and no more stalling generator! Just finished running for an hour with both AC's on. Great video!

Appreciate the video. Just a note though. Have been at two rallys now (Winnebago GNR was one) where Cummins speakers have said during generator maintenance seminars: Screw in the dipstick to check oil level on the larger generators. Do Not screw in the dipstick to check oil on the smallest generators like the one I have (2.8L Gas). Odd, since not screwing it in would lead one to add more oil and make the overfill problem even worse on those smaller generators. Also odd since my manual says to screw it in! Just passing what I've been told by Cummins reps several times now. I just depend on the spec in the manual (.6 L or 20.3 oz). I do my own oil change. Check the oil when done - it's right at the Full mark with it not screwed in. At 140 hours since the last oil change now, it's running great and still very close to the same level.

This is helpful. I had the start/stop issue too. The error code of 2 flashing lights on the start button meant a low oil issue. I had to search that out on line.
The dipstick as you describe, does have a treaded area that does seem deceptive as you mention. I added oil and kept checking the dipstick by “fully screwing it in” instead of the simple ”put it in and pull it out” to read the level. I found that screwing it in completely gave me a proper reading, BUT, note that as you add oil, a little at a time, that the oil settles down into the generator oil pan very slowly, as it seems to look like it has more oil than it actually has in the pan, so after several additions of oil and watching it drain down and repeatedly checking it by screwing in the dipstick and rereading the level, I was able to correctly fill the unit to the REAL Full level. It took several minutes to get it right, so be patient.
Again, your video was helpful. Thanks!

Just want to Thank you for this informative finding.
My experience was not quite the same symptoms but ended up being the same cause due to oil quantity.
Initially my gen did not want to start. Cranks over but won't run. I attribute this to 2 months of inactivity. I could get it to run using the choke. So my trouble shooting led me down the path of varnish from stale gas.
I removed the carb bowl and the gen ran for 20 minutes but with hesitation here and ther. Restart and it ran for a couple minutes. Removed the carb, cleaned and reinstalled. The gen ran even longer but then dies. I even added Sea Foam to clean the varnish still runs then dies.
Bypassed the main gas line and installed a clear filter to see what's going on and used a 1 gallon gas tank with Sea Foam still same issues.
Now the costly part, replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump, carb, air cleaner and sparkplug. Same thing ran for 20 minutes fluctuating/storing here and there and dies.
This brings me to this video and the authors other videos ... now remember my gen ran prior to this issue and on numerous road trips other than it sat without exercising for 2 months.
Its winter so that might be another attribute.
Now I did not follow the author's advise on the oil level using the dipstick since this is not a quantitative measurement. I used a measuring cup and added 1.6 quarts of T6 synthetic oil.
I am proud to say that my gen has been running for over 4 hours under load.
Thanks to you friend for sharing .... I added my experience so others can compare my symptoms to theirs.

4000 Onan, Adding my field notes for reference.
Well I am back at it, generator will only run for 20 minutes ... puzzle I am ... determined to find the cause of the issue(s).
On a quick note, My oil level after adding 1.6 quarts and letting the oil settle it's at the 3/4 mark on the hash lines with the oil cap fully closed. This is my 1.6 quart mark that I used for reference. Hence, as the generator runs it burns oil thus the oil level will change but I know where 1.6 quarts of oil level will be on the dip stick at settled. Thus I can add oil as needed. This is my quantitative measurement ... it's a known value.
I am still looking for the cause of the shut down. Posted below are informative info that I am posting to add to this channel. My current Error Fault Code 1st level is 3, and my 2nd level is 38. So it's not my low oil level but a Field Overload (OverVoltage) issue ..... more to come as I troubleshoot this generator.
Check the 1st Level Error Fault Codes:
      1) Wake the control by pressing and HOLDING the Stop/Prime button for 3-4 seconds then release.
      2) Press the Stop/Prime button 3 times.
      3) Note the red flashing blinking light.
      4) 1 Blink = shut down high engine temp, 2 Blinks = low oil pressure fault, 3 Blinks = Service Fault, 4 Blinks = cranking engine over 30 seconds.
      5) 2nd Level Error Codes checked by pressing the Stop/Prime button one time after checking the 1st Level Error Fault Codes.
      6) 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 blinks, a short pause, then 1 to 9 blinks. (2 digit error code).
      1 2 = Overvoltage
      1 3 = Undervoltage
      1 4 = Overfrequency
      1 5 = Underfrequency
      2 7 = Voltage Sense Lost
      2 9 High Battery Voltage
      3 2 = Low Cranking Speed Sense
      3 3 = Fault Code (????)
      3 5 = Control Card Failure
      3 6 = Genset Stopped w/out Fault Condition
      3 8 = Field Overload (OverVoltage)
      4 1 = Generator Rotor Fault
      4 2 = Processor Fault
      4 3 = Processor Fault
      4 5 = Speed Sense Fault
      4 8 = Field Sense Fault
      5 1 = Processor Failure

I changed the oil today on an Onan RV GQ 4000, filling the oil to full and had this exact problem. I took a turkey basting tool to suck the extra oil out. It took four loads to bring it down to the half-way point on the yellow tip stick, which is where the oil level was when I started the oil change. Now it runs fine. Thank you for the helpful and pointed video.

I'm having another issue with it not connecting to the power controller but when I was trouble shooting I noticed the oil was right where you said it should be. I saw your other video dated July 12, 2017 before seeing this one. And fortunately it was one of the first videos I saw when trying to figure out my problem. I want to thank you very much as I was having this problem with my generator of shutting off after about 10-15 min running. I don't normally use it but run it regularly just to maintain it. The last several times it was shutting off after only 15 min. I saw your video and decided to try it. Low and behold it ran for an hour with no problem. So it seems this solved the problem. Now I can cancel the appointment I had to take it in to the local truck repair shop to figure it out. I"m guessing it would've also cost me hundreds of dollars for these "pros" to figure it out. I have a regular Onan 4000 generator in my RV so I don't think it's microquiet one you speak of but your technique worked. Thanks again!!

I decided to change the oil ony Onan Marquis Gold 5500 before starting it because it sat for years b4 I bought it. After changing the oil and filling it to the full mark I proceeded to start it. She ran for about 2 minutes and sputtered out. I thought maybe bad gas on float bowl or plugged filter somewhere 🤔. Then I came across this video, drained what appears to be 1/2 quart dropping the level to the add line and started it. SHE RAN PERFECTLY FOR 30 MINUTES!!!

one more thing, clean your air filter too! if you put the oil where it is supposed to be, the oil starts to come out of the air filter (crank case vent). SO, when it gets hot the oil expands and caused the filter to fill up with oil causing it to suffocate the generator and die. this is where the issue is coming from. after tearing it apart, I figured it out with the help of your videos. thanks again.

I had the same problem with my generator. I ran it last Christmas night (doing the Cousin Eddie thing) at my brother's house. It was around 10 deg. so the generator ran fine all night long. But when I ran it several times since (in warmer weather) to keep things fresh, it cut out after less than 5 minutes. This weekend, I drained about a pint of oil from it and ran it for a good 10 minutes without a problem. Great advise!

After changing my oil yesterday I started experiencing this exact problem, prior to changing my oil the level was about 1/4 inch above the add line; when I changed the oil of course I filled it up to the full mark, and then it started dying on me the next day. I drained a little oil out to get it down to 1/4 inch over the ad mark, problem solved!

After diagnosing a failed voltage regulator, cleaning the slip rings, and checking the low oil pressure switch, my friends 6.5 kW onan was running fine for about 2 weeks. On a hot summer day, it started surging and shut down. The next day, same thing. I remembered seeing this video when working on the voltage regulator and decided to remove some oil from the generator. Sure enough, it started and ran for 6 hours that day and 8 hours the next day. We ended up doing an oil and filter change adding the recommended amount of oil and noting that the level was low on the dipstick. He now runs from halfway up the dipstick for full, to barely on the dipstick for add like you show. He put in Royal Purple 30W oil because it is low foaming and I've had great results with it cleaning up car engines when used there. Thanks for the great advice!

Thanks for the video. I was having the same unexplained stop issue on my QG5500. From the day the generator was first run, at zero hours. Had an Onan Tech come out at 50 hours and take a look at it. No problems found. Nothing changed or fixed, because there was nothing broken.
I now have 186 hours on the gen set and continued to have the unexplained stops.
NO MORE. Watched your video and a couple of others with similar comments, drained 3/4 of a pint of oil, dipstick showing just below half. NO PROBLEMS....
Last night had dinner with a friend who is the General Manager for a local RV dealer. Mentioned the problem to him and it was, ho-hum, we know about it. We short fill the generators when they go out or we change the oil. He said, with the oil at the full mark the engine builds excessive crankcase pressure and it shuts down the generator.
Surely Cummings knows about this issue. Why haven’t they redesigned the dipstick? That’s got to be a cheap fix.

If the dealer and his technicians know the issue and they send units out to the field 3/4 of a pint short, Cummings must know the issue. Blows my mind they haven’t done a darn thing about it. It certainly lowers my opinion of Cummings Onan..
BTW my error code on the shutdowns was always 36. Which is basically, Hey, we shut the generator down, but we don’t know why, call us, so we can change lots of parts and charge you lots of money....

    • @vegasdavetv
      @vegasdavetv  5 ปีที่แล้ว

I've heard several error codes from people to, all leads back to oil in the end, that's truly weird, you would think a single code. also you are EXTREMELY lucky to have a dealer who knows what to do. if you read comments, most dont, they toss a load of parts and hundreds of dollars at them.

vegasdavetv UPDATE...We left South Texas, headed for AZ, with a weeklong stay in Albuquerque. After I drained 1-1/2 cups of oil, 3/4 of a pint, of oil, the gen set ran as it was supposed to for over a week of boondocking. I was scared to drain more. Dipstick was just below half.
Yesterday we got to Phoenix, temperature 102. We planned on boondocking one night, before taking in the rig for some warranty work. Shortly after we parked, the gen set incurred two unexplained shut downs. Without hesitation, the wife said, drain some more oil....
So I drained and additional 1/4 of a cup. The generator cabinet was hotter than I have ever felt. Now I’m at 7/8 of a pint drained, Oil level on the dipstick is 1/4” above the add mark.
Like Magic, the generator ran all night, flawlessly.
BTW, I’m running 5W40 Mobil 1 motor oil in the generator.

Thanks for posting the video, saved me a lot of time and money. First off I was aware that too much oil can be a problem as I had a problem with my home generator which the previous owner had put too much in it which caused it to run for 30 mins and the.shutdown. I picked up a used motorhome a few days ago which I was told by the seller it had an issue running more than 30 mins. I already suspected either to much or to little oil. Last night I checked the oil level to find that it was way past the max and when I had tried to start it the day I picked it up it didn't run. I drained off the oil to the max on the dipstick and then tried to start and it did for a few seconds and then died which is how I found this video. I drained off more oil and started it again and this time is ran for around 40 mins without any problems. It was getting dark so I will run it at the weekend and see hows it goes. Hopefully I can strike this one off my list as done. Thanks for the info about the dipstick marking are wrong.

Unbelievable! My three year old Onan QG 4000 generator was running for a few minutes and then stopping. I was so frustrated that I may have to take it to a dealer to troubleshoot and fix. It had been running great for the past year and all of a sudden, it starts, runs a few minutes, then stops. I found this video when searching online for a fix. I was amazed at the video and though - could this be true? So, my oil level was at or just above the top (full) line. It had been changed at the dealer. I used a syringe and removed oil so that it was just above the bottom (add) line. On the second crank it fired up and ran for an hour with no problems! It purrs like a kitten. I still can't believe it. Thank you so much for posting this video. It has saved me a lot of frustration and money.

My guess would be that it was meant to be screwed all the way in and then unscrewed all the way out, take dip stick out and then check oil for it to properly be within guidelines, if you are just dipping stick in as far as it will go without screwing it in then you are going to overfill that way

This happened to me over the weekend. Luckily we figured it out. When we got home i looked into it and sure enough we were right. Make sure your trailer is level side to side. Took us a long time to find a camp spot so when we found one we were done. We got the trailer level front to back but was slightly off side to side. This generator has never had a single problem prior. We knew it had and was getting fuel, spark, air. So we knew it was intentionally shutting itself off. Changed the oil level and ran perfect the rest of the weekend.

Wow, I am so glad I ran across this. I have a 2020 Entegra Anthem and have had the same problem. My Onan 12500 will run about 7 mins and just shut down. It will start right back up, but now only run 30 sec or so. The only time it has worked was when we drove it about 15 miles to a reputable service shop, and of course it ran for more than an hour with no problem (like I said, the only time it has run) Makes sense that driving and the fluid movement may have had something do do with that. Once we put it back in storage I went a week later to run it, and same ole thing happened. I have been on the phone multiple times with Entegra, Firefly, and Generator mechanic with no result. I am scheduled to take it back in tomorrow, but I am running over to drain some oil first, pray it works. Have you heard of this happening to the 12500? Also, I see the last post are a yr ago, has Onan fixed the problem? They are getting a call from me right now. Thank you so much for this very informative video. I am now subscribed.

@@vegasdavetv Well, me not being mechanical at all, once I got to the coach first thing that jumped out at me was the dipstick is along metal one and nothing like the one you show in the video. I do not believe I can suction any oil, so my first thought was to drain some. I ran it, and right on time at 7 min it shut down, I checked the level and it showed a hair over the full line. I guess I will keep my appointment tomorrow and relay the info. I just have a feeling after I drive 20 minutes to them, it will run fine. Think I will see if they would be willing to keep it over night.

I was having this same issue lately. My Cummings Onan 5500 generator would run for 10 minutes then die and it sounded like it was running out of gas. I thought I was having the problem due to parking on ground that isn’t level enough. I called Cummings and they told me I needed to take it in for service and it sounded like my fuel pump was going bad. I watched a TH-cam videos about changing the fuel pump then ran across your video. I took out half a quart of oil, and now it’s been running for 45 minutes no problems so far. My generator was made in 2003 and I am so glad I do not have any type of oil level switch on it whatsoever. Forever I thought it did until the other day I had to removed the whole things and replace a bunch of wires that a rat had chewed. I had the whole thing completely apart and there was no sign of an oil level switch. I realize the dangers of it running too low on oil but after seeing everyone's frustration with it, I'd rather just keep an eye on the oil and not have to deal with wondering if it is the switch or not.

I don't have this model engine. I have several other larger Onan engines powering generators and bucket lifts and they have their own set of problems, but I would think that the way to determine the proper full and add marks on any engine of ant make would be to completely drain the crankcase, replace the filter and fill the engine with the exact amount the manufacturer states as full. Then after a short run then cool off time. pull the stick and mark the proper full mark because you now know the engine has the correct amount of oil. And without saying, make sure the engine is level when checking.

  • @NickBeechKingair
    @NickBeechKingair 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I just figured this out a few months ago! On my QG4000, dying was not the problem, but oil consumption and fouled plugs! I have had this unit for 5 years. My first mistake was filling the oil to the top of the filler neck like my Honda generators, but later found out that the level is supposed to be read after the dipstick has been screwed in. But then, even with the level set properly it was still using oil. But once the level stabilized at the halfway point on the dipstick it no longer used oil! So now my oil changes will only be filled to one half of the hash mark.

Wow I cannot believe this worked! Brand new QG4000 with 8 miles on it wouldn't stay on. I removed 17 oz or so and now its been idling for 40 mins now. Only issue now is that it idles down and up every 10 seconds or so under no load. With the AC on, it happens even more. Not sure if I should adjust the governor or not.
