Rather than waiting for the pot to come up to temperature, I usually use the saute function while loading the pot and then cover and switch to pressure cook. Then it comes to temperature and start pressure cooking in half the time. 😊
The Instant Pot is the PERFECT ‘I live alone, a little OCD, ‘Did I Turn Off The Oven/Stove???? While I’m 10 Miles Down The Road’’ LIFESAVER! Worst case scenario isn’t ’Did I Burn Down My Apartment Complex??’ but ‘it’s been on warm mode’ all day. That Peace of Mind was HUGE for me.
@@patriciatinkey2677 i belatedly found the child lock on my stove so I lock it after dinner. Heck, I discovered a feature on my dishwasher like 2 weeks ago!
I get your point but let me say that I grew up in the 1950’s and ‘60’s, and learned to use my mom’s Presto pressure cooker by the time I was 12. Therefore, I have never been afraid to use any kind of pressure cooker (or pressure canner) and I have never had one explode on me. I did have the lid of my mom’s Presto come loose once when I overfilled it making beef stew, but it didn’t explode. I do love my Instant Pots, though, because you don’t have to babysit them.
I was in the kitchen back in the '60s when my mother's Presto pressure cooker went off like a bomb. It was a memorable experience. I am now okay with the Instant Pot but when I first got it I would not stay in the kitchen while it was operating. I'd wait until it was finished cycling and the pressure had released.
I still remember the tomato soup explosion that landed on the ceiling, then, of course, back down! I laughed, 1965, & spent the next 4 hours on my room, alone...
@@vlunceford pressure canners are a whole different thing! We would take it to the County Extension service for testing. My mother in law, anyway. I always just did water bath canning of acidic foods. Tomatoes and pickles.
We RV full-time and use only solar power and propane. So to save propane (gas stove) I use mine ALL the time. There are only 2 of us so traded 6 qt for 3 qt to save space. Works great! Efficient use of space, power and we eat healthier because of it. Favorite uses: beans, grains, hard boiled eggs, whole potatoes (keep in fridge for a quick fry up w/onions on the stove top -after they've cooled) oatmeal, yogurt, meats, pasta, soups, cheesecake, meatloaf. Thanks for sharing the link to the beans and grains. Thanks for the many informative comments. Loved learning from you all.
Hi from Helsinki Finland. I hardly ever use my stove either, after buying my Instant Pot. I love it. For whole grain rice, I put some rice in a stainless steel (salad bowl), I rinse the rice, then cover the rice with one inch above the amount of rice. Place the bowl of rice onto the trivet, add 3/4 cup water and cook. When it's done, the rice is all contained in a 'serving bowl' and clean up is much easier. Nothing stopping you from plopping the rice onto a plate of greens for a nice igloo-shaped pile of rice.
Hi, Bill and Cindy from Fargo, North Dakota here. Cooked a nice beef roast in mine yesterday. 25 minutes with just the roast, water, and some flavoring. Once that was done the potatoes and carrots were peeled, sliced, ready to be added. Another 10 to 15 minutes and it was done. Removed roast, scooped up carrots and taters into a dish. Then used the saute mode to make gravy in the I-pot. One schilling brown gravy mix, 3 spoons of flour, mixed up and added to the juices. Absolutely awesome! Been using mine for over 2 years, still no problems, no explosions. Pretty much all common sense. As for flavoring on the beef roast, I rub the roast with tenderizer and garlic. Into the liquid I added 4 green onions, a couple of dashes of worchester sauce, same of soysauce, and a couple of glugs of Oyster Sauce. Don't be afraid of your Instant Pot, it ROCKS!
I gave my instant pot to my daughter to help her because she has all of her children and her husband and she works. I really prefer my nutripot. It also has a canning setting and does some other things that the instant pot does not do. It was a gift from my husband a few years ago and with my disabilities there are things that I miss cooking because I can't stand up for a long time to do so. So I have adopted my recipes to suit my pressure cooker and they really come out beautifully.
Jeremy, I make all my beans in the IP and with no soaking. There is a exception though and that is Great Northern Bean. Either you have to soak overnight or substitute another white bean. The first time I cooked them I set the time as stated and they were definitely under done. I keep adding 10 more minutes until I got up to almost an hour and still wasn’t the way I wanted them. I thought maybe I got an old bag or something but the next two times the same problem. I now use navy beans instead and never a problem because I would never remember to soak overnight so navy beans solved the problem.
Hey there. I use my InstantPot most days. A few tips: 1) two accessories were very worth the reasonable price: a small pot with a handle and a lid for your pot-in-pot recipes and the strainer basket with a handle for steaming 2) I find that adding oats and cold water makes a disgusting, overly starchy mess, but if you pour boiling water on the oasts and then cook them in the IP for one minute on low pressure, they come out perfectly. Every night I put the amount of oats needed (1/2 c. per person) into the small pot-in-pot and measure the amount of water I'll need into the kettle. In the morning I turn the kettle on, pour the boiling water over the oats, and set the IP. Super easy, hands-off breakfast.
When I was in Jr high and high school my mom had a 4 qt and 6 qt presto pressure cookers also a 2 qt pressure skillet -- we also had a couple of large pressure cookers for canning I've never seen one explode but my sister and her friend took the pressure regulator off the top and it spewed bean soup on the ceiling - mom made them clean the ceiling - I now have 6 qt and 8 qt Insta Pots and love them - I still have mom's 4 qt Presto pressure cooker (keep it for sentimental reasons
Hi Jeremy, I absolutely love my instant pot. I never cook my grains on the stove top since I've started cooking them in the instant pot. I love how fluffy they come out. I also cook my chickpeas every weekend in the instant pot and no more soaking. I cook a big batch of Yukon gold potatoes every weekend also. I just bought another instant pot because it was on sale just for backup, hahaha.
I bought my first off brand instant pot in 2012. After two off brands dying within three months of purchase I stuck to my reliable Crockpot. By 2015 I still used my Crockpot daily. Those days when I forgot to load my Crockpot before work made me wish I had an Instant Pot. I finally broke down and purchased my original 6 quart Instant Pot in 2015. No regrets. I love it and use it daily. I use it to sauté, pressure cook and make yogurt. Edited to add: I no longer use my Crockpot.
An Instant Pot and a Vita Mix blender are absolutly essential in my kitchen. Make a lot of non-dairy yogurt in the Instant Pot. Consequently, I have 3 different sealing rings. One for beans etc., one for grains and sweet things, and one for yogurt. I love that i only need one pot to make a dish that requires sauteed veggies.
Thanks for saying about yoghurt making and the different seals. Im going to get an instapot now for sure ( love yoghurt but have only been able to buy ones with gellan gum).
Yoghurt making does not really need the pressured lid! Any fitted glass lid will do, to view the progress. However, a few extra rings is always a great keep, to separate flavors.
I believe Chef AJ was the one I learned how to make date syrup/paste in the Instant Pot from. Just pit about 12 dates, cover with water, pressure cook for 2-3 minutes. Carefully put the dates in a blender with enough of the cook water to blend. You can choose how thick or thin by how much date water you choose to use. Nisha @cookingforpeanuts suggested putting cinnamon in with it in her longevity cookbook. It’s so good and I’ve saved a lot of money on date syrup. Try Ezekiel toast with peanut butter, date paste, and thin apple slices on top. Yum!
I keep mine on the back of my stovetop all the time!(I took off the burner knobs so no accidental melted IP!) It is used often! I originally bought it to help make canning foods easier. I got the IPMax one that has the canning ability! LOVE IT! I love using it as a slow cooker too! Oh and I bought one for each of my 4 kids for Christmas last year! lol
A girlfriend of mine bought me one as a housewarming present. It’s the best thing ever! I’ve had it 5 years now and use several times a week. Makes the best rice and hard boiled eggs, etc. I couldn’t live and function without it!
I just subscribed! I make caramel, yes. Place some paper towels in pot. Place 5 cans sweetened condensed milk in pot. Fill with water half-way up cans. DO NOT OPEN CANS. PRESSURE FOR 1 hour. Walla!!! Once cold, open and enjoy on cakes, and ice cream. Delicious 👍
A few other things: it’s not a pressure canner. The instant pot doesn’t come up to that pressure or heat, so it isn’t safe for pressure canning (not the same as water bath canning.) Also, the gasket is dishwasher safe, as is everything except the base where the electronics are. Check the manual. But it’s still good to have a few gaskets for bland, spicy or even sweet. Last, the white chalky stuff or rainbows in the stainless pot are easily remove with a little vinegar and a few minutes sitting or a good scrub. Stubborn stuff usually comes off if you start with a baking soda scrub, rinse and do the vinegar trick.
When you need to do a quick release: I saw a video when I first got mine. The guy in the video (No Idea who he was) said he puts a folded wash cloth on top to catch the steam. I went right out and bought a very inexpensive pack of 12 plain white washcloths and that's all I use them for. It difuses the steam quite a bit, and catches any possible spillovers from a pot too full
I have mine sitting on top of my stove, so I vent the steam right into the exhaust vent. By the way, I almost never use my stove anymore. It's a glass top range and I got a silicone mat to cover it. So I basically use it as more counter space these days...
@@AquariumRandomVideo2 you should try one of those mats! They keep the stove top covered so it stays clean and protected from scratches. Just run the mat under the faucet to clean it off.
I love, love my Instant Pot. This may have been said, but to avoid burn notice and having to clean out the pot- for grains, oats, even tapioca, I use the PIP (pot in pot) method. It works great. I have the OXO silicone trivet with handles when I do PIP. I love cooking fresh green beans in my Instant Pot. 1 min is all it takes, with quick release. No longer, or they’ll be mushy.
I love my instant pot! You called me out hard too I let it sit in the cabinet for a few months before I used it. Now I use it to make huge batches of food every sunday and vacuum seal and freeze leftovers. So, during the week i have freezer meals to grab for in rotation with old batches I've made. Thanks for making this. I didn't know how to use the delay start!
Best invention ever. Wish I had this bad boy when I was a working mom with little kids. The days of the crock pot where you had to prep the night before are over!!! Yes I knew about putting the lid on the side of the pot.
I used a pressure cooker that you used on the stove from the 1970s on until the instant pot came out. I also have a Moeller electric pressure cooker that can help with doing canning.
TIP: Can cook pasta in the Ultra. Pasta, water to pasta level, trivet - you called it a steamer I think, HP, 2 mins for penne size or 1 min for elbow size, QR I have a steam converter it helps with the spitting, if too much spitting, let it rest a bit and keep trying it. Open, stir and finish your dish in there if you like. I usually use pesto, a lil tomato gravy (sauce) etc. if it's a complicated multi level dish I'll sauté my onions garlic seitan or tofu before cooking the rice. Scoop into a covered dish or pot. Add some water, scrap up the browning bits pour in pasta and your water. Another tip: this pot reaches pressure canning % pressure. I take my dry beans in Mason jars following the canning steps and cook my beans right in the canning jars. Season as you would like! Some on top will look uncooked and lil dry but once you heat & stir it up they're perfect!! I love my IPs!! My poor blender is now Leaking and need to find a fix. Love it for making soups, sauces, almond milk... I also make greek yogurt and ricotta in them! Kiddo lives in an apartment with a horrendous electric flat top stove that takes 20 mins to start sautéing garlic!! So when visiting I almost use it daily!! First time watching and subscribing!! Throw your rings and water cup in the dishwasher
Instant Pot sell non-stick inner pots for most models. I use them and they make cleaning a lot easier. Bar Keepers Friend can be very handy for the stainless steel pots.
They'll be in our eBook - but here's a version on our website: pbwithj.ca/2022/04/24/beans-legumes-lentils-guide/ pbwithj.ca/2022/04/24/instant-pot-grains-cooking-guide/
I love my IP. I live at 7300 ft and I have to adjust my cook times for the altitude. Today, I cooked soaked black turtle beans with a small piece of kombu seaweed and a bayleaf. I took the IP outside and did a quick release, no smell in the house. My most perfect beans to date! So happy to know more tips with this video and additional tips from the comments!
Thank you SO much for this video! We learned a lot, and finally bought an instant pot! It's awesome--you are so right that beans and lentils (and everything else we've tried!) taste even better cooked in this thing! Yay! We really appreciate the time you put into your videos!
Wow, this video was so helpful. Thank you for explaining how it works, I really needed to understand that better. I use Pinterest a lot and made an Instant Pot board since that is the brand I have. That is where I keep my cooking time charts, food to liquid ratios, and recipes. Getting a pressure cooker and using Pinterest has been a game changer for me. I bought mine a few years ago on an Amazon prime day deal. Can’t believe one of your commenters found a brand new one at Goodwill. That has to be the deal of the century! Yes I did know about the lid sitting on the handle. But I wouldn’t have if I hadn’t seen it done in the videos on TH-cam and Pinterest. So it’s good you included it in yours. Very thorough job, well done Jeremy! 👏
@@pbwithjeremy I reheat food in the instantpot al of the time. Place the trivet in the bottom of the pot, add a cup of water; place food in a heat safe bowl and cook on high temp for zero minutes (or longer (2-3 minutes) if needed. We bought the IP Rio Wide earlier this year and we can reheat food on a winter white Corelle dinner plate in the Rio Wide. The Rio wide needs two cups of water vs one in the original IP. I use my instantpots at least 5-6 a day.
Hello from Pennsylvania. I love making oatmeal in the insta pot. I bought one when my daughter moved away, so I wouldn't live on canned beans. It's now dry beans all the way.
@@raymondsmith9820 half cup rolled oats, one cup water, 1/4 cup chopped nuts, 1/4 cup raisins, a sprinkle of pumpkin spice. Cook for 6 minutes. quick release. add honey to taste. Enjoy.
Thank you for all of this information on the Instant pot. I learned so much. I usually don't soak dry beans as they come out perfect every time in the Instant pot however l do soak chickpeas overnight as they come out tender like when they come out of a can. This makes for a creamier hummus. So happy to find your channel and look forward to trying your recipes.
Thank you, it was very helpful! I just bought instant pot and air fryer and so far I only cooked meat for my dogs 😂 they loved it and it was sooooo much faster and less smelly than in traditional way
Love my Instant Pot! It's such a $ saver as well as time saver. I have used it to make everything from vegan soy yogurt, one-pot pasta dishes, to Edgy Veg's Indian dal (last night's dinner made with brown rice, separately in the Instant Pot). I have never gotten the "Burn" notice, thankfully. And I knew about the side handle holding the lid since before getting it (as a gift), that is what sets the Instant Pot apart from other electric pressure cookers.
I'm so glad I watched this! This morning I found that little plastic cup thing sitting on my counter and I couldn't figure out where it came from. I was about to throw it in the recycle bin and chalk it up to a mystery. Oh, and the Instant Pot makes the best corn on the cob ever. I recently bought a soy/nut milk maker and have been making the most excellent yogurt in my Instant Pot. My countertop is a thicket of indispensable small appliances. Hello from P.E.I., island of the potato!
❤ would love to know how you make yogurt in the instant pot and what brand of soy/nut milk make it did you purchase. Appreciate any information you can provide thank you
@@kittykat717 My instant pot has a yogurt setting/button. I bought some vegan culture online, but you can use probiotics from pharmacy capsules or a bit of yogurt from the previous batch or any store bought yogurt with active cultures. I make my own soymilk, but any plant milk that doesn't have additives or stabilizers should work. I make it in jars in the pot, but I've seen people pour the milk in the pot directly.
I used a pressure cooker for many years to cook beans then I bought an Instant Pot and it’s just wonderful. No more standing over the cooker waiting for it to come up to pressure and adjust the heat. My favourite recipe in the Instant Pot is dahl from a Happy Pear recipe. I also make a great risotto in the Instant Pot, I’ve even used it to bake potatoes.
Hey! This was terrific! My daughter gave me an InstaPot in September. It’s still in the box. How dd you know my Mom was always afraid of pressure cookers 😂?!? I’m still cleaning and organizing my Galley kitchen. Your tip on NOT USING the InstaPot under a cupboard was worth its weight in gold! Since I have none, I’ll just Subscribe and keep coming back to get more great ideas on how to use this thing! Thank you! ~Oregon’s Original Main Street Mama
Hello from Lisa in Cullman, Alabama. New to the instant pot & yes it's still in the box.😂 Hopefully after watching this video I will break it out & get started.
I watched a TH-cam video a while back and this lady used a meter on an oven, an air fryer, toaster oven, slow cooker and an Instant Pot for the same amount of time to see energy usage for each. When it comes to saving energy, the Instant Pot won. It uses less energy than all of them...that sold me.
The lid notch blew my mind 😮😮😂 I literally just bought a new instant pot BECAUSE I sat the lid of my old pressure cooker (generic Walmart brand) on the stove, not realizing the eye was on and it melted the plastic! I still use the pot BUT NEVER ON PRESSURE because the safety has been compromised ( I actually threw the lid away to make sure no one uses it) I use it to slow cook covered with foil or to sear, stir fry. ❤now I have a safe place to rest my lid to my new pot!😊😊thanks !!
We've had ours for several years and have never changed the seal. Funny thing, I have 2 super-tasters and never had any complaints going from sweet to savory and back.
Very nice! I have a used (thrift store) one I haven't used yet, your video was perfectly timed for me. Can't see your charts, though, since I can only watch on my phone. I will think of you kindly as I eat my instant pot beans!😊😊
I use mine several times a month. Mashed potatoes are great. I love how I can drain the potatoes after cooking. Then putt them back in the pot. Throw butter on them, some salt and maybe even the milk. I can then put the lid back on keeping it all warm while i finish up the rest of the meal. Then go back, mash them in the pot and put the lid back on. They stay moist and warm and are perfect when everyone fjnally shows up for dinner. I only use the instapot for artichokes now. There are tricks to do the like doing them upside down and knowing the size to set the time. Thats the only thing that the hardest to do is the timing. I also sous vide cheap cuts of meat.
Watching from Monmouth Junction NJ. Ive had a Power Pressure cooker XL for over 18 years. On my second one. I use it every day. Thanks for the video. I learned some new tips
Love love LOVE my Instant Pot! I bought extra silicone rings for the lid, an extra liner non-stick pot, egg rack, air fryer lid, mesh basket for broths... Lately I have making clotted cream in mine. Oh em gee is that wonderful stuff. 😊
@margiemurray2147 no, I make clotted cream. Which is basically the opposite of ghee. But now I am curious and am off to Google... A few minutes later: yes you can make ghee using the saute function (that would have been my guess).
Hello from Port Dover, Ontario!! I was introduced to the IP by a friend a number of years ago. I love it so much that I now own 3!! There are times when they are all in use at the same time, lol.
So glad I found you and your quirky vids on YT. I’m enjoying the range of PB meals you have. I think I’ll go buy myself a second rubber seal. Watching from Sydney Australia
I just found your channel, I have been looking for basic instructions about beans and grains with out recipes. Just charts with times and ratios, thanks.
Never even thought about doing beans in it!! Thanks! I use the pot in pot method for rice, perfect every time, just takes a bit longer. Does perogies from frozen really well too, but I usually pop them in the fry pan to crisp up a bit. I was today years old when I found out about the lid holder! :)
I bought a 6 qt. Cuisinart before InstantPots came on the market. It works very well. Ribs, chili, beans,& stews are my most commonly cooked items. The Cuisinart doesn’t have as many bells & whistles as InstantPots but that hasn’t hampered my cooking.
Another awesome video Jeremy and I make use of my instant pot on a regular basis. I have made risotto, soup, curries and even steamed vegetables in it because I have a steam basket to use with the instant pot. My 3 favourite kitchen gadgets are: 1) The Instant Pot 2) My Air Fryer 3) Ninja Kitchen Foodie Power Blender/Soup maker. Love 🥰 the video and love ❤ Jeremy & family.
@pbwithjeremy It is a Power Blender with a cooking element and it does more than cooking soup ( you have the option of chunky soup button or smooth soup button) it also makes sauces. For recipes that aren't hot it also has a frozen dessert button, smoothies button and other useful options.
Hi Bill and Cindy, this is Amy from Alaska. I got my first instapot was free from a friend that was moving down to the lower 48. The second one i got for $50 but came with like 30 to 40 dollars worth of accessories never been used i absolutely love mine ❤️ ♥️ 💕 💗 💖
Great explanation of the cooker. I hope those who are hesitant will give it a try. i've been using one for a long time as well. One can save much time and money using one.
Howdy from the foothills of NC. I love my instapot. So much so that I take it on vacation. I cook everything from beans to bbq rabbit in it. I love the fact that it will go from a frozen meat to a cooked meal in around an hour.
Thank you for this episode. I didn't know about the lid sitting in the handle. Genius! I learned to use the IP on my own. However, my extended family w grandkids didn't know how to use it, and I believe it still sits in the box because they are afraid of it. But I did get the IP to make their lives easier, for busy nights. I shared this with them, so hopefully, they will start using it!
Hi Jeremy. It’s Judy from Coconut Creek Florida. I’ve had two Instantpots, an 8 qt and a 3 quart for about six years. I love them. My favorite thing to make is soups. And yes, I new about the holder on the side
I use my instantpot and air fryer almost daily! Love it! ***Finally got brave enough to buy an electric canner. I just canned 8 pints of beef it looks fabulous! *** Best appliance by far! Potatoes in 10 minutes for a busy family chefs kiss!😘
The burn notice can also appear if you saute first and then pressure cook without ensuring that the fond (brown sediments) aren't removed from the bottom of the pot. This usually just means that, after adding liquids, you stir vigorously, scraping the bottom with something like a wooden spoon, to remove all the brown stuff from the bottom of the pan. Don't throw away the brown stuff, it adds heaps of flavour.
I did know about the lid notch trick, but I also heard it is really easy to snap off the bit on the lid that slots in, so I do use it, but with great caution!
Michelle from Edmonton Alberta Canada here. I have used the instant pot for several years now. I have a hack for you. If you are cooking starchy foods, wait 2 mins after you cook then release. You won't get a mess that way. Also, i use tomato paste and get the burn notice. I haven't done it yet but i am going to try putting it in after cooking. The pot gets hot enough that it should cook in fine
Wow you’re terrific ! How’d you guess I have an instant pot , still in the box , going on about 2-3 years ? Yes I’ve thought about using it but my nerves get the best of me , back it goes ! Maybe you’ll change my mind afterwards!
The main thing I use my Instant Pot for is hard boiled eggs. We have farm fresh eggs that will not peel well if cooked traditionally. The Instant Pot makes them a breeze to peel. I cook a dozen at a time. You are a good teacher.👍
Hello from Concord California! New sub today. There are quite a few things that I did not know about the Instant pot . So happy to learn! Thanks for sharing your knowledge! Look forward to advancing my skills 💟☮️ Nana
I'm Holly from Northern Nevada (near Lake Tahoe). My favorite instant pot item is a three-way tie between mashed potatoes, hard boiled eggs, and fresh cranberry orange sauce.
Im the one that still has the INSTANT POT IN THE BOX….Learning from you and Im grateful for all your knowledge and tips and recipes!!! Im getting mine out!!!
Thanks for the detailed informative video. A friend of mine has mentioned instantpot several times but never told me anything about it. Now I know . Im sure many people have been wondering about the instantpot . Another U-Tube video educated me about the so called "airfryer" .Its a handy device but I was disappointed that it doesn't live up to its implied name of frying capability !
Hi From Mississauga, Ontario, Canada (from Dina) I use my instant Pot once or twice a day, sometimes 3 times! I cook my steel cut oats every morning in it. I also like to cook rice in it to steam potatoes as well.
@@dorothybrown8859 I take 1/2 cup of dry steel cut oats and 1 and 1/4 cup of water and place in the instant pot. I have the time already pre-set to 5 minutes and I let it naturally release. When I pour it into my bowl after it is cooked, all of it pours into the bowl with hardly any residue in the instant pot container. It has the perfect consistency. Remember it is 1 full cup of water plus 1 quarter cup. Some people say it should be 1 to 3 ratio but for me this turns the oats to watery. It is important that you use slow cooking oats. If you end up getting quick cooking steel cut oats, change the cook time to 4 minutes instead of 5. Let me know if you want me to tell you what I add to it after it is cooked. Enjoy your oats!
Actually, salt does not make beans tough. I'm 66 years old and grew up eating delicious, tender beans my entire life. My parents and grandparents salted beans, and I've always salted beans. A favorite family meal growing up was a big bowl of beans, fried potatoes, cottage cheese, and green onions. Perfection! But being a foodie and science nerd, and after tiring of people saying that salt made beans tough, I ran separate tests in my own kitchen with both salt and acid, always from the same bag of beans. Only acid makes beans tough. In fact, flavor wise, beans greatly benefit from salt being added early on in the cooking process, rather than later. As a now WFPB eater, I don't add salt when cooking - except for beans. They also taste better and have more depth when cooked slowly. Yes, even though I knew this already, I ran that test as well. That said, I purchased a stovetop pressure cooker when I got out of college, then bought an InstaPot years ago. I often use it to cook beans if I don't have time for the stovetop method, but they can't compete when you just want to sit down to a bowl of beans. If simply adding beans to make a separate dish, it's not noticeable. Dining in a Mexican restaurant in Oklahoma a number of years back, I was delighted to discover that their beans were not refried, and were vegan. I was further delighted to taste the purest, most simple, most clean, most "beany," and most delicious pinto beans I had ever been served in a restaurant, so naturally asked how they were cooked. The waitress checked with the cook, came back, and told me that they put an unsoaked pot of beans on the gas stove every night before closing, added salt and garlic, and turned the gas to very low heat, and let the beans cook overnight. Frightening, but brilliant. Oh yes, this reminds me that years ago I heard it said that Mexicans don't pre-soak beans because to do so, they believe that when you pour off the soak water, you pour off the flavor. So years ago I stopped presoaking all beans except red kidney beans (those I presoak, pour, cook for a while, pour, then add fresh water, or I can taste the nasty toxic flavor) . That said, I still have a lot of black beans purchased in bulk that are rather old, so I do pre-soak those at this late stage..
Thank you for sharing your bean-cooking wisdom and experiences! It’s so refreshing to hear from someone with such a rich background in cooking beans and a love for food science. Your detailed observations and kitchen tests are fantastic-I can tell you’ve put a lot of care into perfecting the art of beans! I completely agree that salt can enhance the flavor of beans when added early in the cooking process, and your point about acid toughening beans is spot-on. Your story about discovering those perfect pinto beans at the Mexican restaurant and their simple overnight cooking method is fascinating. The tradition of not pre-soaking beans to preserve flavor is something I’ve heard, and it’s great that you’ve tested it yourself - we don't pre-soak either. But I know for people with intestinal challenges it can help them. Thanks for sharing these insights, and I’m sure many bean-lovers will appreciate your tried-and-true tips!
I have used my instant pot for a few years now and never knew about the lid holder! When I'm not using it, I've been putting the lid upside down on the pot Not sure how i missed them, but checking out your instant pot recipes. Really enjoy your channel (clever name too)
I had my instant pot for a year before i took it out of the box and took the time to read the instructions. Since then it is always on my counter top. I use it all the time. Prior to having an instant pot i never liked brown rice, UNTIL i made it using the instant pot. What a difference! This is one of the best kitchen gadgets.
I had the old fashioned with a rapid rolling weight Presto. It was a lifesaver. I worked full time and often later than my hours with a young family and a husband who was disabled. It allowed me to put meals together quickly. Never a problem. The key was just to respect it and watch it. Anyway love my instant pot.
Sounds delic. I didn't see the rcipe posted? Also, did you add all the brine to the jars. Could you tell me where the recipe comes from. Thanks for all you do.
Hi from Lincolnshire in the UK. As a child in the 50's and 60's I had my fair share of scary moments with a pressure cooker. I am very happy using my Instant Pot. Soups are my favourite. I love the sauté function. I too have separate sealing rings for savoury and sweet recipes. Thank you for this informative video.
Rather than waiting for the pot to come up to temperature, I usually use the saute function while loading the pot and then cover and switch to pressure cook. Then it comes to temperature and start pressure cooking in half the time. 😊
Good tip!
Thank you for that tip, never thought of that. I do like to re- heating foods that just takes less time than the stove and to me taste better
Thanx!!

They exploded many decades ago. My grandma was horribly burned but this was many many years ago. They’ve been safe for decades.
I bought one never used at goodwill! $10 12 Quart! Love it!
Amazing find!
I found one like one the picture for $10 like new. Think it's an 8 qt.
I was in the local Goodwill yesterday and was surprised to see 3 IPs of different sizes. Someone decided pressure cooking wasn't their bag.
Wow! 👍 lucky find😊
Great idea! Thanks for the tip.
I’ve had mine a couple, it’s my 1st…tell me what you first timers do😂
Hi, Bill and Cindy from Fargo, North Dakota here.
Thanks for the tips, Laura!
Soaking beans removes phytic acid, anti nutrient that hinders mineral absorption
Wow, boiling water over the oats - that's clever!
I usually do overnight oats but instant pot might be a nice change-Thanks for the tip!
Smart - we have one here in Toronto and the other at our farm. Can't go without it!
I do. Great if feeding a crowd if you have both. I also buy low carb cranberry juice at Christmas and mull it in the crockpot. Smells great.
Crockpot has a multi cooker. The best of both! The main difference is the Crockpot brand I have is non-stick.
@samchak2115
You are correct that yogurt is not made under pressure. However, a ring takes up way less room in my cupboard. ; )
Wish I could afford a vita mix
Me too! The different rings are awesome
Yum!
That’s a great way to make date paste! THat's how we do it now too - it's in AJ's newest book
Delicious 👍
Voila darlin'.
Voilà

@@karengerber7158 omg- Fabulous!
Thanks for that info. I have 3 pressure canners that I also use for cooking. I don’t think I’ll need one.
The InstaPot MAX has a pressure canning feature. I pressure can foods in jars in it all the time.
Never thought about that! That's brilliant!
I have mine sitting on top of my stove, so I vent the steam right into the exhaust vent. By the way, I almost never use my stove anymore. It's a glass top range and I got a silicone mat to cover it. So I basically use it as more counter space these days...
@@peggywoods4327 I do the same, apart of the silicone mat :)

I'm glad you are enjoying it! Use the delay start!!!
Best invention ever. Wish I had this bad boy when I was a working mom with little kids. The days of the crock pot where you had to prep the night before are over!!! Yes I knew about putting the lid on the side of the pot.
It is a life changer!
I used a pressure cooker that you used on the stove from the 1970s on until the instant pot came out. I also have a Moeller electric pressure cooker that can help with doing canning.
Yep found one at the Goodwill still in the box 20 bucks 🙌🏻👍
GREAT DEAL!
@ I always see Insta pots pressure, cookers, and slow cookers at Goodwill. It’s crazy.🤷♀️
Wow score I have never seen one
I got mine too at goodwill I bought the 13 in 1 air crisp, but I need to buy the pressure cooking lid
Got mine off MAC for $8
Thank you for the tip on the Instant Pot lid! 😊❤ I had no idea and I'm ALWAYS wondering where I'm going to put the lid in my limited space kitchen.
Right?!?! Problem solved!
Very educational. I'll be watching this a few more times and checking out more of your stuff.Thank you!
Glad to help!
TIP:
Can cook pasta in the Ultra.
My poor blender is now
Leaking and need to find a fix.

I have also learned that if you wish to reheat something frozen just place food in pot, set timer to '0' and let it go. Comes out perfect
Whaaaaaaaaat really?
@@pbwithjeremy I reheat food in the instantpot al of the time. Place the trivet in the bottom of the pot, add a cup of water; place food in a heat safe bowl and cook on high temp for zero minutes (or longer (2-3 minutes) if needed.

I have never gotten the "Burn" notice, thankfully. Hi from Ottawa, Ontario 🇨🇦. I love my instant pot. Thanks for all the tips & information.
You are so welcome Louise!

Thanks Judy - love the 8 qt for soup!
I use my instantpot and air fryer almost daily! Love it!
***Finally got brave enough to buy an electric canner. I just canned 8 pints of beef it looks fabulous! ***
Best appliance by far!
Sharon from Port Colborne , Ontario. Thanks for the info. There are many things I have never tried in the Instant Pot. Time to get busy.
Hi Sharon!!! I've spent some time in Port Colborne - beautiful place!!!
I love my Instant Pot! I did not know about the Lid prop feature. Thanks!
You’re welcome!
I did know about the lid notch trick, but I also heard it is really easy to snap off the bit on the lid that slots in, so I do use it, but with great caution!
Really?… it’s pretty thick and sturdy
Michelle from Edmonton Alberta Canada here. I have used the instant pot for several years now. I have a hack for you. If you are cooking starchy foods, wait 2 mins after you cook then release. You won't get a mess that way.
Also, i use tomato paste and get the burn notice. I haven't done it yet but i am going to try putting it in after cooking. The pot gets hot enough that it should cook in fine
I usually let starches naturally release if I can
Wow you’re terrific ! How’d you guess I have an instant pot , still in the box , going on about 2-3 years ? Yes I’ve thought about using it but my nerves get the best of me , back it goes ! Maybe you’ll change my mind afterwards!
Break it out and set it free!!!!!!
The main thing I use my Instant Pot for is hard boiled eggs. We have farm fresh eggs that will not peel well if cooked traditionally. The Instant Pot makes them a breeze to peel. I cook a dozen at a time. You are a good teacher.👍
In the summer, we use our Sunoven to make our hard boiled eggs too
Hello from Concord California! New sub today. There are quite a few things that I did not know about the Instant pot . So happy to learn! Thanks for sharing your knowledge! Look forward to advancing my skills 💟☮️ Nana

You are so welcome!
That is awesome!
Thank you so much for an excellent and fully detailed lesson. It simplified it all for me.
I'm so glad you found it helpful!
‘’ Dump and pump”😂 I love it! Thanks for sharing. Always learn something new from your channel!👍
I love finding new ways to make cooking more fun!
You're welcome!
I have 2 instant pots, a 3qt, and an 8qt. I will often use both of them to make dinner, boiling pasta in the 8qt and making a sauce in the 3qt.
That's pretty clever, using both at once!
Hi From Mississauga, Ontario, Canada (from Dina) I use my instant Pot once or twice a day, sometimes 3 times! I cook my steel cut oats every morning in it. I also like to cook rice in it to steam potatoes as well.
Howdy neighbour!!!
@dinammariea61, how do you prepare your steel cut oats, how long to cook?
@@pbwithjeremy @ Howdy! Just learned you are in Canada too, neat!
@ Thank you so much! I prefer steel cut oats and will certainly give this method a try.
@pbwithjeremy Thank you! You're very kind - and so much fun. Love your videos!
@@sherrijones3568 thank you!
Thank you for this wealth of knowledge and your experience with testing and tasting.. love it! 😋🙌🏼
@marly1869 , Thank you! So kind of you to take the time to comment. 😊
I have used my instant pot for a few years now and never knew about the lid holder! When I'm not using it, I've been putting the lid upside down on the pot
Not sure how i missed them, but checking out your instant pot recipes. Really enjoy your channel (clever name too)
Thank you!!
You're totally right, brown rice is incredible in the instant pot.
In the description - but it's here too: th-cam.com/video/ZRZ1jM7-kXI/w-d-xo.html
If you use this recipe you can use it all
Hi from Lincolnshire in the UK. As a child in the 50's and 60's I had my fair share of scary moments with a pressure cooker. I am very happy using my Instant Pot. Soups are my favourite. I love the sauté function. I too have separate sealing rings for savoury and sweet recipes. Thank you for this informative video.
You're welcome Yvonne!
