  • THE HAPPY SATELLITE NERD EPISODE 97 - Obsolete But Neat
    C-SPAN is still analog on C-Band Satellite it is one of the last analog channels that you can receive with the Analog Satellite receivers!
    Early systems used analog signals, but modern ones use digital signals which allow transmission of the modern television standard high-definition television, due to the significantly improved spectral efficiency of digital broadcasting. As of 2018, Star One C2 from Brazil is the only remaining satellite broadcasting in analog signals, as well as one channel (C-SPAN) on AMC-11 from the United States.
    Different receivers are required for the two types. Some transmissions and channels are unencrypted and therefore free-to-air or free-to-view, while many other channels are transmitted with encryption (pay television), requiring the viewer to subscribe and pay a monthly fee to receive the programming.
    Satellite TV is being affected by the cord-cutting trend where people are shifting towards internet based streaming television.
    Is analog TV still available?
    Full power analog TV broadcasts officially ended on June 12, 2009. There may be cases were low-power, analog TV broadcasts could still be available in some communities. ... Cable or satellite TV subscribers may, or may not, be affected (more on this below).
    Analog satellite television is slowly being replaced by digital satellite programming. sup Digital satellite television has become increasingly available in better quality known as HD TV (high-definition television). Digitally-broadcast content is characterized by greater picture and sound quality.
    What does analog channel mean?
    analog channel - Computer Definition
    In communications, a channel that carries voice or video in analog form as a varying range of electrical frequencies. Contrast with digital channel.
    Can you get satellite TV for free?
    There is a free satellite TV solution for consumers who want a variety of television channels without paying ongoing subscription fees. Free to Air satellite television channels are unencrypted and legally available to the public for no charge.
    What is C band used for?
    The C band (4 to 8 GHz) is used for many satellite communications transmissions, some Wi-Fi devices, some cordless telephones as well as some surveillance and weather radar systems.
    Can you still use a big satellite dish?
    Spoiler alert: Yes. It may have been all the rage when Radio Shack put it on the cover back in 1986, but the C-Band satellite, also known as the “Big Ugly Dish,” is really a thing of the past. ... If everyone had a satellite dish then cable companies couldn't make money.
    What is C band transponder?
    The C-band communication satellites typically have 24 radio transponders spaced 20 MHz apart, but with the adjacent transponders on opposite polarizations. In that configuration, the transponders on the same polarization are always 40 MHz apart. Of this 40 MHz, each transponder utilizes about 36 MHz.
    What is the difference between KU and C band?
    They have five digits, one more than C band frequencies. This is the most noticeable difference. The Ku band frequency range is 11.7 - 12.2 GHz (or 11700 to 12220 MHz) Notice how these frequencies are higher than the C band frequency range. Because of the higher frequencies, Ku band waves have shorter wavelengths.

    C Band use to be an adventure and exploration back then. Some of the best programming were the wild feeds. Network programming and events with no announcer commentary Cameras just running like Disney World New Years fireworks. You got to watch the staging and setups, news people in between broadcasts picking the nose and stuff. My 10' dish still back there
    Great stuff thanks.

    Hi Robbie. I am Brazilian and I would like to give you some information about analog TV in Band C in Brazil. Satellite dishes began to be sold in 1984 and were sought after by wealthy farmers in the interior of the country to receive signals from the large Brazilian networks. Over time, the price of the equipment dropped and satellite dishes became popular throughout the country for offering good image quality at a low cost. Cable TV was never very popular in Brazil due to the influence of the main television network, Rede Globo. At its best moment (2008), it is estimated that 20 million households received 32 analogue channels in Brazil (in addition to the large networks, there were religious, rural, parliamentary, educational channels, one for news, one for sports, Brazilian MTV and a which broadcast 8 hours a day on Disney Channel). The transmission is done in the "exotic" PAL-M standard (PAL at 60 Hz, unique in the world). I remember that the broadcast was very good, the image of some channels was very clean. The Brazilian government is migrating all channels to Ku Band because of 5G. Only 18 channels continue to broadcast in analogue for another 2 or 3 years at most. I checked this and CSPAN was pretty clear in 2020 in Michigan. Was getting super snowy in 2021 until it was gone. I’ve been using a MA-COM 10 ft dish since I bought my first house in 1999. Along with a GI receiver that still use as a dish mover and servo motor controller. Used 4DTV till the end, now just FTA. Which I love because of the oddball stuff you don’t find anywhere else. Analog TV here too along with mostly vintage tech, cars, and decor. Gonna have to check out your other stuff.

    Great video Robbie thanks for sharing. I had no idea that there was analog satellite tv broadcasts from Canada in 2020 cool 😎. Oh by the way I think the snow/noise on the analog satellite tv channel picture is called “Sparklies “. Looking at the Sparklies on the satellite channel you are receiving they look white to me. If I remember from the old analog satellite days the so called “Sparklies” were either black or white on a weak analog signal. I don’t know if there are any analog satellite tv channels broadcast in the Uk where I live, I would think they were switched off years ago. My setup is a Icecrypt s3500hdcci hd satellite receiver fed by a 80 cm dish and monoblock lnb for Astra 1 deg 19 east and Hotbird 13 deg east. 2 satellites on 1 dish, keep up the good work.

    • @donbest5024
      @donbest5024 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The sparkles or snow in the signal is probably because of dish size,With analog a 10 foot dish or bigger was always needed to get clear signals,if you lived in center of USA you could get by with 5 or 6 foot because of land area or footprint,the closer to the ocean or beaches always needed bigger dish

  • @davidk8893
    @davidk8893 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Based upon the aesthetics of the receiver, I'd say it's from the late 80s.
    Also, S-Video has been around for a very long time, in various forms. It is simply a separation of the brightness and color signals into two signals (S-Video = Separate Video) called luminance and chrominance, often abbreviated as "luma" and "chroma". This standard has been around since the 1970s.
    The reason that there is no S-Video output on the satellite box is that analog television is not S-Video. In order to be transmitted on a single channel, the brightness and color information must be encoded into a single signal, which is Composite video, and then modulated on a carrier to be transmitted. Since the separate video from the broadcast camera is combined at the transmission station, the extra color information that S-Video would have provided is simply lost. Therefore, there would have been no benefit to having an S-Video output on the tuner as it would be the exact same image quality as the composite output.

    • @RobbieStrike
      @RobbieStrike  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting stuff! S Video was something you would see in early digital satellite receivers. But now would be replaced by the HDMI outputs in most new receivers.

    • @telaacida
      @telaacida 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The first satellite transmission system that employed luminance and chrominance separation was the "MAC" ("B-MAC", "D-MAC", "D2-MAC"), developed by the British in 1982.

    • @notsorandumusername
      @notsorandumusername 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      D2-MAC was technically a brilliant system but it was also expensive and when it turned out bog standard PAL could also be broadcasted over the Astra satellite it had little chance. That said, the first digital receivers did not have digital HDMI outs, relying on analog SCART connectors instead. Many models could also send out a SCART-RGB signal where which was very similar to MAC with it's separation of chroma and luminance. The quality difference between SCART-RGB and standard SCART-CVBS was quite stark: RGB was much better. In the US, the component system was it's equivalent. And this was quite welcome, since the digital transmission had much better colors than PAL anyway. I had both an analog and a digital receiver from 2000 onwards, but the analog was really only used for to receive BBC Radio 1 and German station Sunshine Live, untel they too became available in digital and unencrypted. From that moment on, the analog receiver was barely used unless I had to point out a dish. I still have the receiver, but it became useless in 2012 when all the analog transponders on Astra were switched off in favor of digital.

    It is pronounced (May Kom)! :) I would say most likey that what you have on your dish is an LNB (low noise block converter) not an LNA (low noise amplifier) The LNB block converts and amplifies the signal from the C-Band frequencies of 3.7 to 4.2 GHz down to 900 to 1400 MHz, whereas a LNA will just amplify the higher frequencies. Interesting to note is that since these are block converted the spectrum is inverted, so transponder 24 is actually the lowest frequency, while transponder 1 is the highest.
    The remote having the odd and even designations make sense when you realize that adjoining satellites have to have opposite polarities to avoid interference. This became real important when satellites were reduced to 2 degree spacing. So on one given satellite transponder 1 would be vertically polarized, and on the next satellite two degrees away transponder 1 would be vertical.

The dish was set with the Sat. Find. phone app. at 206 degrees SSW and an elevation angle 37.9 degree (no quality sig., therefore dish moved slowly up-down, left-right, with no result). It looks like analog receivers put out 18 volts all the time? I guess if one wanted to power the LNB from the analog receiver the LNB would have to be mounted 90 degrees from what it normally would be to get Vertical? I found three receivers to check and hope a 5' dish might get something :)

Does anyone have a picture of the model, I'd like to see how good my memory is. It seemed the whole front was silver with a huge round knob on the right side with the channel numbers on it.

    Just guessing the reason it's snowy is because the signal is aimed more at the US than it is in Canada. Years ago, I lived on the Canadian border and got US and Canadian signals crystal clear, but anything coming out of Mexico or further south and aimed toward those countries was very snowy but watchable. I'd say the picture quality of anything aimed at Mexico is about what you have there with C-SPAN on your older TV set in the living room. At least with analog, any amount of snow on the picture you can still watch it. I bet if C-SPAN went digital, all you'd get would be a black screen because of the low signal.

    isn't the sat input in the old analog receiver spit some voltage for the LNB? wouldn't that cause some problems with your newer digital receiver? or does the loop output kind of is made for that purpose and neutralizes any voltaje coming thru?
    or maybe back in the day you used a separate power supply to power the LNB so there is no voltage coming out of the receiver coaxial?

    • @RobbieStrike
      @RobbieStrike  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, in the old days the receiver had a wire to send power to the LNB to change the polarity from horizontal to vertical! Modern Lnbs are changed by a circuit!

    You should use better plugs that do not change the impedance, a detriment to the signal.
    Also S-video is worst as mention on my Toshiba analog receiver. C-Band analog signal is composite anyway so s-video is pointless on analog receiver.

    Why are at the analog Satellite TV so much black/white spikes (drop outs)? - Where are this drop-outs come from? First to tell is that analog Satellite TV are modulation is in FM (Frequency Modulation). If the FM-Demodulation inside the Receiver due a not so high Signal level that is received on the dish the FM clipping Amplifier are not full overfilled. Then the demodulation hast no signal on each point of the drop-out and this is to see as a white or black horizontal spike. One of them whithe or black spike mean that is the high/low frequency on this band. The horizontal synchronisation is jittering that you can see on the instabil Horizontal lines (they are shaking left/right). There are 2 solution to fix this problem. First you reduce the bandwith of the FM Signal then the picture will be not so sharp but without les/no drop-outs. 2nd you install a resynchable Synchron circuit and make this picture more stabil and have a sample & hold for the Y-signal (dropout compensation like a VHS Videorecorder in Playback mode). Best Regards Volker from Vienna

      Yes I'll be another standard that will mean we'll have to buy new receivers over the next few years. Hopefully the X will work better for c-band signals. But don't expect every transponder the switch right away. There still is DVB S that's been broadcasting is never change to DVB S2
