Big Black Backyard Cband Satellite Dish

  • THE HAPPY SATELLITE NERD EPISODE 1
    Growing up in the 80s I always wanted to some day have a Satellite Dish so that I could get movies and shows and wrestling that I could not get on my Canadian cable company's. So when I was looking for a house I made sure that I had a backyard facing south. What fascinates me is growing up in the 80s when Star Wars was popular and space was exciting is that you could have a big dish and receive Radio and Tv that is receiving a signal form a geostationary orbiting satellites spacecraft flying above the Equator at 35,786 km
    I love the news channels and wildfeeds from all over the place! Getting Realz, AXS, AMG, Laff, RT, CNC, PBS, Tuff tv, Cozi, MeTV And many More.
    Sometimes the Picture Quality is better than a subscription box or a streaming service!
    What I do is Legal despite the misinformation about FTA all channels that I receive are Unscrambled unencrypted or in the clear (ITC) A Satellite dish is similar to having a over the air antenna it is just not as main stream. And with Streaming technology taking over the world now that also hurts satellite because Broadcasters can much more cheaply use streaming instead of satellite for there feeds.
    ree-to-air (FTA) are television (TV) and radio services broadcast in clear (unencrypted) form, allowing any person with the appropriate receiving equipment to receive the signal and view or listen to the content without requiring a subscription, other ongoing cost or one-off fee (e.g. Pay-per-view). In the traditional sense, this is carried on terrestrial radio signals and received with an antenna.
    FTA also refers to channels and broadcasters providing content for which no subscription is expected, even though they may be delivered to the viewer/listener by another carrier for which a subscription is required, e.g. cable, satellite or the Internet. These carriers may be mandated (or opt) in some geographies to deliver FTA channels even if a premium subscription is not present (providing the necessary equipment is still available), especially where FTA channels are expected to be used for emergency broadcasts, similar to the 112 emergency service provided by mobile phone operators and manufacturers.
    Free-to-view (FTV) is, generally, available without subscription but is digitally encoded and may be restricted geographically.

    I see you have 3 satellites. Is that how many satellites needed to get every FTA channel?

    • @RobbieStrike
      @RobbieStrike  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No I could have more. Lol. But I do have a dish on a motor and I can move to whatever satellite I'm able to get in my area. For example I have a old Shaw Direct dish aimed at 97 west so I can just quickly go to it using the switch. But how I end up watching TV is I point my c-band dish at 101 West I tend to watch decades Me-TV Heroes & icons movies and whatever other diginets they have up on that satellite

    Hey Robbie, Just starting out in the FTA realm and hope you can give me some guidence. I have an old 10 foot dish with a channelmaster (Chaparral Corotor 1) feedhorn and Drake C band. I see that this feedhorn design is not cheap and is still being sold on ebay. My question is, should I keep this unit or upgrade to a newer c/ku unit

    • @RobbieStrike
      @RobbieStrike  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would go with a new C/KU lnb. it will work more easy with a modern DVB S2 receiver. For the cost of the new LNB is less than 1 month of Cable!
      The old ones can still work but you need the motor control to change the polarity. If the motor still works! I use just a Titanium LNB it locks the week C Band a little better facebook.com/commerce/products/2862135993855552/?rt=9&referral_code=page_shop_tab&ref=page_shop_tab

      Thanks for the quick response and the link to lnb. I had been checking that unit out. Did not see one with the c/ku design and was not sure what the 2 c inputs would really do for me. Going satellite is completely new to me, the dish has been sitting in my back yard for the past 20 years and just now getting around to doing something with it. Hoping some NTSC3.0 content ends up on it 🤪 Either way, should find enough content on it to keep me busy. Thanks again.

    I've got a bud but haven't used it in many years. How can one control an actuator these days? My old receiver used to move it.

    • @RobbieStrike
      @RobbieStrike  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use a super power jack mover you can get one at Tek2000.com you can set it up so your receiver can send the command to the super power jack to move the dish or just use the movers settings! th-cam.com/video/7mfDgR4o6TQ/w-d-xo.html PLEASE SUBCRIBE AND CHECK OUT MY #FREESatelliteTV video's

      @@RobbieStrike Thanks. Don't think it's worth it, pretty expensive. Not sure if my dish would get good enough signals. If there was more FTA stuff or grey market channels like there used to be then maybe I'd try and get it going again. I'd probably need new actuator and LNB too so I'll just leave it for now.

    I know you don't have this dish anymore . The reason your actuator started to fail is your missing the weather boot to protect the shaft from rain getting into the actuator shaft. For I noticed you didn't put one on the new one.

    • @RobbieStrike
      @RobbieStrike  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      LOL please watch the video again more carefully. I ended up scrapping Black Beauty but it wasn't because of the actuator I could have just simply replaced it but the actuator ,I replaced in this video still works just fine. The weather boot if you've ever noticed most c-band satellite dishes don't have the weather boot on them and the reason why is that it limits the amount of stroke that the actuator has for the current time with C band satellites there are satellites on the East and the West. Putting the weather boot on would limit the ability of the dish to go far east. I think that's the reason why most people with c-band satellite dishes don't bother installing them. Now in the next few years the satellite industry is looking at concentrating more satellites to the higher point of the sky to eliminate interference from 5G service. So when that happens it might make more sense to use the weather boot because of the limitation of a need to move the dish at that point.

    • @bschema
      @bschema 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RobbieStrike the c band dish I have has a weather boot on it and it does the full motion horizon to horizon. .I think when the dish was installed where I got the dish from when it was new must of put a longer boot on it.

    Your audio instruction is battling against wind noise, traffic noise, the sound of a nearby young child, WHY ON EARTH do you add more interference with some scratchy-sounding music track -- is there not enough unwanted noise competing with your monologue?!!!
