4. An Old Enemy (+Achievement!) | Trajan Campaign | AoE2: DE Return of Rome

  • Difficulty steps up with this one!
In this scenario, Trajan and Hadrian must split their forces to attack Armenia and Parthia. You have to use the support of the Nabateans for resources while you meander through the Caucuses, but can eventually get an economy for an all-out assault on the Parthian citadel in the south.
ALSO, the achievement is to just not lose 5 units to conversions, which we did incidentally.

The Greek the voice over referred to could be Xenophon and his Expedition of the Ten Thousand. It's a mission of the Greek campaign in AoE 1 proper.

Even the map looks kinda of similar, with all the U turns you have to do in both scenarios.

Trajan's campaign would make for great co-op play. In that first one you have the support of the emperor and then in the rest Hadrian loyally supports you

My problem here was that I mainly used legionaries which get wrecked by the heavy cav. Second try worked better.

11:00 Aw, did they get rid of the funny Priest voice? That’s such an iconic sound.
Oh nevermind, it’s just super quiet.
12:33 Helepolis don’t seem too different on paper, but the upgrade DOUBLES their rate of fire, making them fire almost as fast as standard archers (in the original game, they actually matched standard archer fire rate, DE/RoR has it slightly slower)
31:41 I really like the added shallow pathways alongside the bridge, I’m not sure what it is about it.

This mission was so difficult on hard. I managed to defeat Armenia until I got my villagers, but by then I realized that Parthia was defeating Hadrian and I simply moved to defeat the remaining forces before I had managed to take out Nabataea's Town Center. Then I struggled against Parthia's forces and defenses and was defeated as they systemically overwhelmed me with horsemen and Ballestas. They literally decimated my village with the villagers before I could do anything. Took a while but I focused on Parthia first in the second attempt with almost depleted resources.

I believe the plural term for Ballista is actually "Ballistae".

This was my experience, too. That, and the pathing was horrible. Units would get stuck on thin air and would try to move closer to get at objects that were already in range. Very bizarre.

@12:30 The Helepolis' key advantage over the Ballista is its greater firing rate. Use these and not the ballistae in order to dominate the battlefield.

idk how to go against the cataphracts. After a few restart, I just spam monks and convert their cataphract. Let them taste their own medicine.

What I fail to understand, is how Hadrian is not even attacked in this map around the 25 minute marker for you, whilst for me he is completely wiped out. This game needs to be fixed.

I beat this mission on moderate and it was such a slog with just Legionnaires and Ballistae. I think I could have maybe gotten some good use out of Chariots to screen for catapults but I didn't really think about it until the next mission and haven't actually had a chance to test it out yet. I believe the Camel Rider is the only explicitly anti-cavalry unit so trying to figure out a good way to counter cavalry when your own cavalry is... not great has been pretty tough.

  • @andrewlee6025

Man I was playing this wrong. This was a slug fest on hard. I was making lots of centurions with Scythe Chariots to counter their horse archers and catapults. I thought making ballista was a mistake because of their cataphracts always diving to kill them. Turns out I wasnt making enough and I shouldve built towers to help push. I really felt this was a civ disadvantage from the AI microing each horse archer.

Defeating the parthians was tough for me in this campaign episode. Went for legionaries, composit archers and catapults, mixing in some knights for the opponent catapults which were wrecking my infantry. Hadrian was virtually useless.
After five failed waves with next to no progress other than destructing some towers and gates, I quit the idea on making catapults since they are awfully slow in movement and destruction. Instead I sent in the knights to destroy the stables and workshops while a giant inf blob held the centre. Worked like a charm. Took me 1hr 45 min ingame time.

My strategy is instant helipolis upgrade. Train only helipolis, won the scenario + achievement on hard at first attempt w/o even discovering the free base behind orange. LOL. Don't destroy the last orange TC before you have massed at least 40ish helipolis or you will get overrun by blue HC and HCAs.

I went very heavy on swordsmen and catapults on this one (hard difficulty), then switched to centurion and catapult, stll got overwhelmed by cathapract and catapuls. After 2.5 hours + I decided to watch your attempt.

This part of the campaign made me becuase I blindly rushed and lost my starting army it was so hard trying to get past the Armenians that I only succeeded by spamming both Legionaries and Catapults.

    • @emilydye5609
      @emilydye5609 ปีที่แล้ว +2

From just a cursory glance, I think only the Catalaunian Fields will have really changed in the Attila campaign. The first three scenarios deal with the Eastern Roman Empire that's still Byzantine (as it probably should remain) and the Roman civilization itself only plays a small role in the forth and sixth scenarios.
