John used to open for Nanci Griffith at Club Passim in Harvard Square; that's where I first heard him, but eventually I started to go to Nanci's concerts just to hear John. His songs were a soundtrack for my years in Boston, and this one has always stayed with me...the bit of humor in the beginning was like a shot of novacaine; people in the audience would laugh and then go silent for the rest of the song and many of us had tears in our eyes by the end. It's just a perfect song in every way.
A perfect song in every way. So many aspects that come together perfectly. The way the words gracefully caress the melody (or vice versa). I look forward to every single phrase.
It's a Masterpiece, John, and I've loved since the 80s when I first heard you play it. By the way, I saw you in Chicago, Kerrville Folk Festival, and at Owen Sound Folk Festival. Thank you.
I hope you're getting paid by the # of plays for this rendition, @johngorka1958 because I've watched this video countless times trying to duplicate your wonderful fretwork on the chorus and strum pattern at the finish. Thank you!

I heard this on an NPR sampler in the 90s in HS and fell in love with this song. It was a campfire play staple for years.
Wonderful...your voice
Tears. Brilliant lyrics, beautiful melody. Have loved this song for decades.
It's a fine bit of songwriting that especially grabs me because I still feel that way about someone.
John is a miraculous magician. PERIOD!
This song has always touched my heart. Such a beautiful but sad love song.

Thank you.
If you remember Out of Sight and Sounds in New Jersey, know that some remember you
a great sad love song
This song breaks my heart every time I hear it ... I still ask an ex-girlfriend, "by the way, how is my heart?" when I talk to her.
