Dave (the 36-year-old with the impressive beard) was raised almost completely sheltered from pop culture by his strict military family. He was homeschooled his entire life until he entered college. He legitimately has very little knowledge of music and bands from before 2000.
John (the guy in the dark on the right) has been a MUSIC LOVER since he was born in the 1960's. Problem is, he rarely knows or fully grasps the lyrics. Dave (on the left), on the other hand, has never heard or rarely overheard the music John chooses to play for him, but tends to take lyrics literally, sometimes to unexpected ends.
John remains in the dark both as a wry play on the situation but also because of legal issues causing his attorney to recommend maintaining a low profile.
We did not write nor do we own the Copyright for the song used in this Educational Video. This is a real, honest reaction to a song Dave have never consciously heard before and/or listened to with intent. Any "facts" offered by John "Doh" are based more on his remembrances than on any actual research. Please feel free to correct him. He loves it.

Unfortunately this is the wrong live version. The Alchemy Live version is my favourite live performance of any song ever. It's superior to this in every single way.

Agree that the Alchemy Live version or studio version would have been better choices for a first listen of that song. MK’s singing sounds a bit tired after almost 200 shows at that point in the tour.
The end solo is still great and shows what a master improviser MK is. His solos are different every night. Try the end solo from Nîmes 92 (same tour) in comparison.
    And thanks for the reaction!

I am one of the guys that would tell you the Alchemy Live version is preferable but that is also because, as a drummer, Terry Williams is brilliant in this concert and really adds a ton of drive to their performance. His playing on Sultans of Swing from Alchemy live is just as good as Mark Knopfler's guitar and really elevates the song. Worth checking out those performances as I also think they have a lot more atmosphere because of the lighting design for the concert. I guess the other thing for me when comparing these performances is that if I have a choice of listening to random person X playing slide steel or saxophone or Mark Knofler playing a Strat then I am going to pick Knopfler on the Strat 100 out of 100 times as these instruments are basically remixes as Alchemy Live is more true to the recorded version and feature Knopfler and his guitar on all the lead lines, which let's face it, you are not listening to Dire Straits for the vocal performance.

That was a soprano saxophone and even though this version is great, the Alchemy live version was even better. Another great Knopfler song you could react to is "Sailing to Philedelphia" from Marks solo career, a duet with James Taylor, or he even wrote a song about the Roadrunner cartoons called "Coyote" th-cam.com/video/Huf-7dZ8Rts/w-d-xo.html

Yes you picked the wrong version (though it is still great) but Alchemy is always the go to for Straits original versions

Yay! You called my name! 🎉🎉 This is such an awesome song! (And I’m one of the usual Rush and Prog aficionados)
A fun one from Dire Straits is “Calling Elvis”, and if you’re an Elvis Presley fan, you’ll have a blast.

You have to get to Brothers in Arms, probably the most timeless Dire Straits number they produced.

Telegraph Road is another name for Route 24 through Detroit. Mark Knopfler wrote this song when touring the US and the tour bus drove over "Telegraph Road" in Detroit while he was reading the book "Growth of the soil" by Norwegian writer Knut Hamsun.
He combined what he read in the book with his thoughts on the history of that road.

Normally, Dire Straits is better live. Sadly, the best Dire Straits song(Telegraph Road) ISN'T better live...the guitars are cleaner, MK's singing more understandable , the piano/organ more haunting and majestic on the ALBUM VERSION( a fan since 1978 telling you this) Sorry, not sorry. Still a great song live, but the album version is SO MUCH BETTER
This version is from the " On Every Street " tour....Mark Knopfler as a solo artist has better live versions than this one...a soprano sax was being used
MK doesn't sing, he narrates....the guitar does the singing

Thanks for doing this video. Telegraph Road has always been one of my favorite songs. The guitar he's using is the Pensa Suhr custom. This version is not my favorite, and his singing is much better in other live versions. I do understand your choice since he incorporated more instruments in this tour. You can't beat the instrumental and solo at the end.

Agreed, It's by far the worst performance of this song that I have heard - MK seems bored most of it. The recordings made in concert in the early 80s were much better, and the original LP recording is also excellent. This is my favorite Dire Straits song.

I believe the instrument is a soprano saxophone. That is the main instrument that Kenny G plays, just for reference.

Although this is not the live performance of the song that so many people love and that gets played all the time on reaction videos, I have to say I love the way Mark Knopfler wails on his Pensa signature model guitar with a solo that is absolutely virtuoso. To see the closeup of his left hand on the neck of the guitar, fingers dancing and pushing the strings around is just amazing.

The recordings of their last tour varies alot in the mixing... Nimes is more vocal-focused than Basel for example.
I know many consider alchemy as their best live album but i disagree (not in terms of energy ofc)
The arrangement of so many instruments is just awesome and i feel that pedal steel contributes alot to songs like Telegraph Road... And im personally biased to Chris Whitten on Drums :D

  • @kellingc

it was a soprano sax. think Kenny-G.
the other version was closer to the time the album was released, and a bit different.
I jist found out this bit of information - Mark came up with this song traveling on Telegraph Rd (RT 24 in Michigan) and reading "The Growth of the Soil".
The song is a story of what the road has seen, from the first person to settle to a build up of a town, to the boon, hard times, modernization, to the bust. The road is still there ans has seen it all.
Rt 24 runs North/South through the Detroit Ann Harbor area, and as their tour bus was traveling on this road, Mark Kmopfler noticed the street sign giving the road's name - Telegraph Road. He was reading "Growth of the Soil", and started imagining the story of what this road has seen.

Note to John: I believe the guitar you comment on is the Mark Knopfler signature model Pensa guitar he used often in the past.

Wrong version guys! This is not Dire Straits steel guitar no no no! Extra percussion no no NO! I'm guessing this was an American venue and Mark was coersed into having a steel guitarist and percussionist perform with them, itll sound better to an American audience! Wrong! Try the Alchemy live version of this song for a true rendition of this song Mark does it all, no friggin steel guitar crap! Sorry for sounding so negative but really pisses me off when people on the outside mess with something that's already perfect, Mark Knopfler imho is the best and most unique guitarist who's ever lived. Nobody but nobody plays like him. PS Greetings from UK.

The story of Detroit in the tradition of James Michener novels. A true masterpiece. That said I prefer the Alchemy live version as well as it is closer to studio version and vocals are clearer. I find it has a more impactful final buildup and crescendo finale.

Rudy Pensa owns a famous guitar shop in New York. John Suhr is a renowned guitar maker who started his career working at the shop. The Pensa-Suhr MK1 was made specifically to be able to approximate the sound of either a Fender Stratocaster or a Gibson Les Paul so that Mark Knopfler didn't have to keep switching between so many guitars during concerts. There's also an MK-2 and others including a rather stylish blue one, which I think may be an MK-90, that Mark also plays.
There's a great documentary called Guitar Stories where John Illsley, Dire Straits' base player, talks with Mark about his 6 most important guitars which includes the two he plays in this performance, the National Style O and the Pensa-Suhr MK1. They meet up in various locations including visiting Rudy Pensa at his shop to talk about the latter. It's on TH-cam and well worth checking out.

Yeah, soprano saxophone. Sax is a cone shape, clarinet is a cylinder. That leads to different harmonics and thus the characteristic difference in tone. Clarinet is smooth and creamy, sax is ragged and brittle.

    • @LiteralistReactions

I'm sure the material also changes the tone, clarinets being wood, saxes being brass. - JD

@@LiteralistReactions Less than you might think; clarinets can be made of brass too. Or even glass like that flute Lizzo played. Cheap ones are just plastic.
