It’s a wonderful short read. Tolkien really intertwined his joy of pipe smoking throughout his Middle Earth lore beautifully. This inspired me to pick up a pipe, and I’m so thankful that it did!
@@jodawgsup no, thankfully no nicotine addiction as pipe smokers don’t inhale. Pipe smokers can go as long as they wish between smokes with no issues. It’s a wonderful, relaxing lifestyle, very much as Tolkien describes.
@@hobbitonpiper you are either blissfully unaware, or do not understand nicotine addiction; the nicotine is absorbed by the lining in your mouth, tongue, etc. Not inhaling it has no effect whatsoever on whether you get addicted to nicotine. I'll reiterate; you do get addicted to nicotine and probably are, just like users of Snus or other chewing tabacco can get addicted. Smoking a pipe is not a lifestyle and you pretending it is, makes you seem rather pretentious and rather dull.
In my mind I can absolutely see you sitting in The Shire having a puff of Old Toby, “the finest weed in the Southfarthing,” with Bilbo, having a pint of the gaffer’s home brew. Pouring over old maps and books, talking with great pleasure about all manner of interesting topics to do with Middle-earth. What a delight, you have set the tone for a wonderful day.
Mr Guite you sir are a national treasure. Thank you for being such an enchanting human being. I have greatly appreciated your work here and letting us in as a guest into your life. Thank you for sparking a love for pipes in me and rekindling my love for Tolkien again. May your pipe always be packed to the brim and your cup ever full. May your lighter never go out, for you are a light to this world.
After a long day’s work, I find myself here, enjoying a good pipe along side you. And I can’t tell you how comforting it has been to enjoy your readings, poetry, and Tolkien conversation during the evening hours before bed. Thank you so much for your wonderful videos:)
I’m 25 and I’m smoking some old Toby I grew and I’ve come to realize this is the most I’ve ever had in common with someone I wish you where my grandfather
I've noticed this about Tolkien's work, that he really understood the nature of humility. The evil characters have to be ostentatious and deceptive in their appearance. They have to show off their power in order to terrify or seduce people into doing their will. The good characters on the other hand, even the extremely powerful, never put on an illusory front. Whereas Sauron, the Nazgul and such have to put on dark forms, and Saruman wears a rainbow cloak to boast of his supremacy, Gandalf appears as a dirty old man, and Galadriel as a beautiful, but in no way martial, lady. She rejects evil with the power of her will. Finally, Tom Bombadil is the perfect expression of Tolkien's insight. He is quite possibly the most powerful creature in Middle Earth, but he is so comfortable with himself and so much the Master that he goes around in a blue hat and yellow boots singing at the top of his voice!
I see that Glencairn glass on the table. A nice dram, a smooth pipe, and a good book. Life’s simple pleasures. I’ve never been a pipe smoker before, but I’ve been thinking about it lately.
Evening Malcolm, talking of Tolkien, l was in Oxford today and l walked by The Eagle and Child. It's still closed! However, the tobacconist wasn't. God bless.
Thanks for sharing Malcom! I have found great pleasure watching you. I am a young adult here in America - I would have loved to hear you speak when I was in college ! Thankful to hear you here on TH-cam.
Oh, wonderful! I started my day this morning by watching the followship movie, and now im enjoying my churchwarden pipe… coincidence that i am now here? I think not!
Oh my! Try to schedule a reading in Chicago next year the weekend of the Chicagoland pipe show so you can take in the show. You'd love it! It's the biggest show in the country! Love you man. Hope to meet you one fine day.
I've been happily reading Tolkien since the age of 14, and smoking a pipe since 19- going on 48 years for the latter. Whenever I read, I have a pipe. For me, they go hand in hand. Interestingly, between those two ages, I became a Christian. I greatly enjoy your channel, and wish to thank you for a calm port in today's stormy seas!
"ah, good morning Malcolm. May I borrow your fire?" I have to say I haven't smoked a pipe since University days and every time I watch your videos I am so tempted to go get a new pipe. Thank again for sharing the coziness of LotR
Looking to find this little book. I will check his website. That aside, what is your favorite tobacco and what scotch do you drink? Thanks. Regards from Middle America!
Outstanding as usual Mr Malcolm! Love to see which Peterson you're smoking on all your vids ! Savinelli lover myself but I do grab a Peterson from time to time! ✌️
@malcolmguitespell Sir I was wondering if you know about the Shire Pipes lord of the ring collection ? If not you should look at them maybe It would be interesting for you and I would like to have your smoker opinion about them too.
I dont smoke pipe, although I do smoke cigars, so no idea why this cideo was pushed to me, but i have subscribed frim this video alone and colour me intrigued into pipes. Now, am I right in assuming thats pipes will be similar to a cigar in relaxation but without the higher costs and lingering smell of cigars? Or are they completely different or even similar? Thank you in advance
I am not, by any means a smoker. But i did buy a calabash gord pipe of e-bay recently for .... i really dont know why to tell truth. Other than the esthetic goes rather well with my K4 mandicello and sherlock Holmes and snoopy fixation. Humans realoy are a weird lot 😞🙄
Malcolm, great video. Just to let you be aware, the Briar Report and others in the YTPC do a starting "international smoke ring day" on September 15th' This will be the third year. The idea that everyone will blow smoke rings on that day and those that want can me video or photo that I will then produce a video of the day for all to view. I hope that you will participate. Ed
I do not see anything in Scripture or tradition that forbids a Christian man to smoke, unless it becomes an obsession or an addiction. Many of my Christian heroes smoked including CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien
I think you said "to your good health" at the end? In that spirit, take a break from the pipe and alcohol and take up a vigorous exercise routine challenge for 30 days! Extend your lifespan a bit so you can enjoy the study for more years to come ;)

An incredible reflection! I absolutely love this, so true
I think you get it 😊. So many people talk so much about Tom and completely miss the point.
I should add that it was one of your videos that put me in the mood to re-visit the Hobbit and I’m now knee deep the Lord of the Rings once again.

My only regret about finding this channel is that I didn’t find it sooner. Malcolm, you are a treasure.
Love it! Wouldn't mind getting that Pipe Smoking in Middle Earth to add to my collection. Sounds wonderful.

Just found your channel and what a gem it is Sir! glad to be a new subscriber and fan
glad you found it. welcome!
I would love for you to produce an audiobook reading of the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Maybe include the The Silmarillion?
Interesting Dr. Guite, I enjoyed this chat quite a bit. Pipe smoking was more symbolic to Tolkien than I had thought.
It took me years of searching, but I finnaly found and purchased a copy of that little book.
Back in print! I got my copy of the new edition last month, worth every penny plus the wait. Thanks Malcolm.
The Malcolm doll is indeed very special. Happy Christmas!!
You are refreshing sir. I don't know how I stumbled upon your content but I'm glad I did. God bless
A great visit to the study, sir!
A lovely little thing, look forward to picking it up and would love to have you pick up and read a spell from Tolkien.
I’d love to read that book.
Oh Mr. Guite, I so wish I had known you were in the U.S. It is an aspiration of mine to hold a conversation with you one day.
Thank you for these beautiful videos
Hello Malcolm, I'm a new visitor to your study and have enjoyed your kind, soothing, and endearing pipe and literature discussions!
Just finished The Hobbit for the 19th time. What a joy.
A pleasure as always Malcolm. Good to see you again!
Its always a joy listening to your chats...abit more of the pipe & tobacco please.
Thanks for sharing this little gem with us, it sounds fascinating! (at least to us pipe smokers 😂)
Thank you for a wonderful video, Sir! Lovely pipe, books and story as always. Greetings from South Africa
Lovely pipe smoking, what joy!
Tolkien's work certainly contained many examples of truth through fantasy.
Fantastic insight Malcolm. 👍
Always enjoy Tolkieniana
Been reading some poetry and short stories by Stephen Vincent Benet. They’re very good
An excellent video, Sir! Thanks for sharing and God Bless :)
This is awesome! I’d love this book! Good stuff!
Mr your the time Lord
An I the only one waiting for Malcolm to blow a smoke ring?
Thanks, once again.
The big surprise is that Frodo is NOT a smoker!

If there's any date in the Peterson book of when the Kapmeer 150s first showed, I'd be grateful for knowing the reference date.
1960 - 1981 are the dates for production of the Kapmeer line, per Mark Irwin's fine and authoritative book.
@Rob Guttridge is very much appreciated . Thank you

it's a similar pleasure, and like cigars, you dont inhale, so its all about the taste and ambience
