I always marked my calendar when it was just the regular season games between Chicago and Detroit in that time because it wasn't just a game it was a message.
yeah dumars was underrated. it didnt matter who was responsible for jordan. jordan was gonna score. i feel joe dumars did as best he can with a superior athlete.
MJ said Joe defended him the best. Joe named his first born boy, "Jordan" Dumars.. Mutual respect, nice to see. Both MJ and Joe in the HOF, an absolutely glorious era of basketball.
JOE DUMARS should have been voted one of the 50 greatest players ever, the reason being, he was clutch and had the responsibility of competing against JORDAN during playoff competition on both sides of the ball, offense and defense, and DETROIT won 2 titles in a row as a result....period
chit..... cool thanks for that man .........i hear ya on the "had his number" part..........the dude was unstoppable from day 1 in the league.....just really liked Joe D as a baller peace
Dumars made mj work, not that he stopped him or shut him down. But he made him work for every point he scored. And if Jordan got by him, he had laimbeer, rodman and those other guys waiting for him. That's why the pistons were successful that time until Jordan bought into trusting his teammates and players like pippen, grant finally matured which got them over the hump
Joe Dumars was Michael Jordan's worst nightmare. Any Jordanite who disagrees weren't watching neither one of them, let alone the game, PERIOD!!! Rolando Blackmon from Brooklyn, New York was also Air Jordan's worst nightmare. So was Gary Payton a.k.a. The Glove. However, the topic is JOE DUMARS.
MJ's avg vs Dumars was 32ppg on 49% shooting, including games of 36, 37, 40, 37, 40, 40, 59, 49, 61, and 47.. Like I said, Dumars did about as good a job as one could possibly hope to do against him, but with an ppg avg & scoring totals/feats like that against him & the pistons, how someone can claim that "individually", Dumars "had his number" in ANY capacity, is beyond my comprehension..
And I do have to point out that Payton didn't cover Jordan for the first three games, and after that, only in spurts. So if you're talking about the whole series, take that into consideration.
Under 50% fg (well slightly), when Jordan was actually playing like 110% is pretty freaking good defense. Just kind of shows the kind of freak Jordan was. A lot of times, Jordan needed two or three different moves to even get a shot off, which boggles my mind how you could even do that for a whole game without being physically exhausted.
Jordan said Dumars because even though Dumars frustrated him, he was still able to perform at a high level. He doesn't want people to look up the playoff game where Payton made Jordan look like a rookie. This is Jordan vs Gary Payton for that 1996 Finals series. Jordan: .415 FG% .316 3PT%, 5.3 rpg, 4.2 apg, and 27 ppg. GP: .444 FG%, .333 3PT%, 6.3 rpg, 7 apg, and 18 ppg. Payton wins every category except ppg. Jordan shot 11.2 free throws a game. Payton is the best to defend Jordan.
Thts your opinion tht hes the best player and I wont argue tht, all im saying is every great player has to have tht one defender in there era and Dumars had Jordans numbber for most of his career
"Dumars had Jordans numbber for most of his career" Oh really? 80's MJ reg season ppg avg vs Detroit: 34.8 ppg 80's MJ playoff ppg avg vs Detroit: 30.0 ppg U call that "having his # for most of his career"?
shut him down?!? thats giving dumars too much credit.. yes mj will said dumars was his toughest defender, but all in all, still the best player, EVER. no comparison.
Pistons SHUT HIM DOWN...U OBVIOUSLY DIDNT GROW UP IN 80S. JORDAN GOT SHUT DOWN BY DETROIT IN THE MIDDLE GAMES OF 89 AND 90 PLAYOFF SERIES....LOOK IT UP THEN GIMME A BREAK... DETROIT OWNED JORDAN AND THE BULLS... DETROIT HAD BETTER SERIES VS CELTICS IN 85, 87,88,90
Joe Dumars is arguably the most underrated SG in NBA history.
Joe Dumars is one of the greatest shooting guards of all time
LOL 95% of the plays are for Michael Jordan and the other 5% end up in his hands anyway. - Joe Dumars

Joe Dumars and Gary Payton did the best job I've ever seen anyone defend MJ. Byron Russell tried but failed everytime

Ikr but it was zeke that was the leader of the team at the time imo dumars was the better player overall tho
Jordan said himself the most difficult man for me to score big point games on was joe dumars

That's what i'm saying, Mike said Joe D, but the numbers clearly say GP. In addition to that, the Pistons had Rodman and more around Dumars.
