Thumb turn Euro cylinders

  • Thumb turn euro cylinders are often a good idea for many properties as they mean that it will always be possible to get in the property as long as you have the key. With most normal euro cylinders if someone leaves the key in the lock on the inside of the property and someone tries to unlock the door from outside the euro cylinder can be damaged. Fitting a thumb turn lock takes a matter of minutes, you can even get high security versions which are ant-bump, anti-pick and snap resistant.

    Some great advice! I can remember you did a video a little while back explaining the difference between a standard euro cylinder lock and something like an ABS one. I changed my euro cylinder lock straight after seeing that!

    Yep, we use euro cylinders with thumbturns for tenant properties, very good idea. I'll have them in my place as well, once the renovation is complete! You could do a whole series on "things that make renting less of a hassle", I'd start with a video on how to replace all your self-locking window locks with non self-locking ones! Sick of having to source replacement window keys because people lose them then press the little button which locks the thing. Oh, and fitting drain covers, fitting boiler re-fill taps, the list goes on...!

      I think the best advice is to keep well away from rental properties. If you want to make money do it on refurbishments, not lettings as a lot of rentals can be a pain. I know a girl in the next town and her and her boyfriend have a lot of rentals and they get nothing but hassle on a daily basis!

      +Ultimate Handyman Absolutely right! Sadly I'm lumbered with sorting out one for my dad as he is getting old. So much work... you are often dealing with people who not only can't fix basic stuff, but whinge constantly about things. It's almost a full time job!

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mat Smith
      It's very difficult most of the time.
      One of my previous tenants lost the key to the back door (luckily it was unlocked) , so I went out and measured the cylinder and ordered it from ebay. The cylinder arrived and I was on site that week, so at dinner I gave him a call and nipped out at dinner, my tools were all at home and the rest were on site, but I thought every guy has at least one screwdriver- Nope, he didn't have a single screwdriver to his name! Luckily I found a phillips bit in the van tool box, which I used with my ratchet!
      Don't get me started on the whinging LOL, this tenant expects me to replace the light bulbs!

      +Ultimate Handyman Argh, nightmare! Only this morning a tenant emailed me to say her oven wasn't working, after last time with the same tenant I drove over an hour to look at it only to find it wasn't the oven at all, it was the hob, and guess what, I re-aligned the gas ring and it worked fine. It gets tempting to start charging for callouts when there is no problem! I'm not even a handyman, but I'm becoming one! I think people whinge when they know they can, but if you put a possible penalty in front of them, they try that little bit harder...

      Nightmare, my properties are only 10 minutes away and that's far enough to drive- especially if there is nothing wrong!
      I think the best idea is to only rent to 20 year old fit nymphomaniacs, then if you get called out for nothing you might as well stop for a brew (Only joking). I'm amazed by the amount of people that cannot even do the most basic of things!

      Normally the more expensive locks, which are often called anti-bump or anti-pick are the better ones. This does not mean that they cannot be defeated by a skilled person, which is why I always recommend a fully working burglar alarm too 👍

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Cliff Carlo
      No, a thumb turn means that you can get out quickly in a fire, it also means that you can never be locked out and will never damage the Euro cylinder if someone has left the key on the inside. A barrel bolt high up on the door will stop the kids from escaping. Or if you have an internal door in the porch, put a lock on that. We used to keep the front door unlocked during the day, but always kept the vestibule door locked.

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, if the door is locked from outside, the door can be unlocked from inside using the thumb turn. I would never fit a thumb turn lock unless I had a fully working burglar alarm at the property.

      Good point UH. I'm trying to get a balance between security and safety as I don't like leaving the key in the lock at night but neither do I like the thought of scrambling around trying to find the key if there's a fire. I have an alarm so that helps my decision. Thanks.

      I normally put the alarm on at night and when the property is empty, but I hang the front door key on the inside of the vestibule door, so that nobody can reach the key from outside but it's easy for anyone inside of the property to reach it. I have heard about people "fishing" through the letterbox to pick up keys etc.

      She was ill in hospital (self inflicted). She asked me if I could let her friend into the house to get some clothing for her. I driver there and find the right set of keys, put the front door key in the front door and it won't open! I then think perhaps I have made a mistake and have the old set of keys for the place. I know for certain that I have the correct back door key, so I go around the back and climb over the wall, put the key in the lock and can't get in because the key is in the door. After some messing about she says that perhaps her 13 year old nephew is in the house and has left the keys in both doors, so I then proceed to bang on the doors and windows. After 15 minutes, someone shouts "she is not in", Eventually he comes to the door and opens it when I explain who I am.
      Then a few weeks back I get a call at 9pm on a Saturday night. She has gone out the front door, locked it and gone to the shop (probably for some beer) and lost the key to get back in. I drive to the house again and retrieve my keys, only to find that my key won't work in the door again! After checking the street for 30 minutes I go round the back and try the back door- the key has been left in on the inside again. Bedroom window upstairs is open, so I unlock my ladder and put it up to the window, then I realised that perhaps it's not a good idea for a 15 stone bloke to try climbing through the window so the tenant offers to get a 15 year old kid from the street to climb up, but in the meantime the next door neighbour offered and he went up and climbed through the opening in the window, then came down and opened the back door. It then transpired that the key was in the back of the front door and she had not lost it at all!
      After all that I thought that thumb turn locks are a damn good idea LOL

    Can euro cylinders have another screw that holds them in place? I can’t remove my cylinder despite following instructions

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've only ever seen them with one retaining screw.
      Sometimes the barrel can get pinched by the handles, of the handles are not aligned correctly. It might be worth removing the handles.

      Ultimate Handyman tried that also. When I’ve looked inside, there appears to be a bracket surrounding the cylinder with what looks like a screw that would need an Allen key to loosen but I stopped there in case I made a mess of the the door lock altogether

      That's strange. I saw a door at a friends house with a oval shaped Euro-cylinder a few months back, there are obviously some locks/doors on the market that I'm not familiar with!
      I hope you find a solution ;-)

      You can get a lock that replaces a standard mortice lock that uses a Euro cylinder, examples here- fave.co/1LZYysw

    Do you know how easy it is to open a thumb turn euro cylinder? If you think about it the inside is already picked by the thumb turn. Yes it maybe anti snap but that's not the easiest method to open them. Picking is easy by a proficient picker but the cam can be engaged easily by using thick piano wire turned 90 degrees. Better off with a standard euro mate.

      Yes, I do know, but when my tenant rings me up at 10pm drunk on a Saturday night to say that she can't get to the door- but has left the keys in the back and front door so I can't get in, you know it's time to fit thumb turns to the front and back doors ;-)

      You can't open the lock in the video with piano wire .

    • @SaxJockey
      @SaxJockey 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cardiffpicker1 There is a video on here where a guy uses a Sparrow bypass tool to access the channel in the cam, then opens the lock (without picking the pins to match the shear line). Various locks of unknown spec. Having just played around with a basic thumb turn lock, I now realise that the tip of the key engages with the channel and serves a purpose; it allows the external key to rotate the thumb turn to match the 'locked or unlocked' position. Playing around with a double key cylinder also suggests the tip of the key engages with the channel/cam. So why isn't a double key cylinder susceptible to bypass from the outside?

    I Ed to do this because having multiple teens coming and going someone is always getting locked out because of the key being in or it’s just left open 24/7! 😠

    brilliant locking system for anybody with limited mobility in their hands.
    have to say this about the internet from another commentor. if i were to ask my mrs to turn the computer on. she'd take all her clothes off and dance evokatively around it.
