    Scorn is a new horror puzzle game with beautiful environments and a lot of sliding puzzles. There's also fleshy guns and monsters! It's not for everyoone, but I've been having a great time. Enjoy!

    as a big fan of H.R. Giger’s work, the aesthetic is right up my alley. i’m also a big fan of the lack of exposition; it adds to the feeling of being in an alien world where you wouldn’t know what’s going on or how things work.

    The truly unsettling element through the whole game is that the giant machinery and mechanisms sound *fleshy* the whole time. when he sticks his hands/fingers into something, when he takes them out, when they move, even the look of it all is flesh instead of machinery. That little difference makes the atmosphere all the more uncanny and makes whatever context could possibly exist all the more terrifying.
    The dev team did AMAZING with the premise of a no-text horror game, and Scorn proves you don't need an engaging story to be horrifying.

      It's not that there's NOT a story, it's just not hand fed to us with exposition. I'm sure there's a story, it's just up to us to piece it together. I mean it's not hard to look at various aspects of this as a big metaphor for our world, looking at sentient life with sentimentality and emotion vs. unforgiving utility and practicality, our inseparable relationship with technology (technology in it's most pure sense, not "ooh social media" blah blah...), and who knows what else I'm not picking up on yet, as this is just my initial impression.

      @@kukuhimanputraraharja8084 I'm getting more into the character creation side of 3D modelling lately. Up until now, I've done mainly hard surface, interior design type modeling. Having to dive into anatomy has been okay thus far. I stay away from cadaver photos and stick to illustrations. As human beings we are INCREDIBLY good at picking out fake humans without even being consciously aware of it. If the ratio of different elements of the face is off even a little people will 100% pick up on it.
      I think that can translate over to gore as well. So when I see a character model of a corpse, a person with a deep flesh wound, gashes all over, etc I know they were probably looking at a lot of references of such material. And the thought of looking at that kind of material to ultimately create a character that could take like 10+ hrs to make, sounds like a nightmare.
      Even worse if they're trying to create high resolution textures. Because then you're having to really closely examine the surface of a wound, a dead persons rotting skin, etc. The whole thing sounds traumatizing.

    I think the puzzle with the cocoon creature shows a bit of the game’s themes early on. Scoop him, he dies, and you use his detached hand to get through. But the axe route honestly seems more cruel in that he’s just… trapped purposeless until he wastes away I guess. Either way, the character doesn’t care and just needed him to get through the door.
    Usually such choices would have an effect game wise but I don’t think so here. I think these choices are just to reveal the players’ sense of morality in a quite nihilistic world. It’ll be interesting to see how differently people play this game.

    • @prettyevil6662000
      @prettyevil6662000 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not even sure it's showing morality since you can't be sure which device will kill him without testing it first. And then the one that kills him actually seems like the kinder option after you discover he's just stuck to the machine after he inserts his arm. The only morality revealed would be in someone explaining why they're doing which option before they do it and perhaps in their reaction after seeing the failure of any plans to keep their new friend.

Overcharges the plant in the "garden" section and dies in the explosion. A second creature wakes up on the wall and makes its way to the structure some time later after the "garden" takes over the interior. That explains why the implant key and "poker" disappeared.

I'm also genuinely disappointed that a lot of people disliked it. I think they missed the point of the game.
    Edit: I really don't believe the character you control out of the "egg" is the same character you started the game out as. I'm leaning towards the first character being the "parasite". I was not expecting any sort of story in this game via npc or text etc and I knew that going in, we were only going to get the visuals to help with that.
      But I was expecting more toward the end visually to give that explanation, like the clever "Ohhh so that's what that is and why it's so fucked up" but no, all you get is "were getting there, walking towards whatever it is, I want to know where I'm being carried what happens next? Cuz it would help with visual representation here!?" "Oh no the things back" end! 😑😑😑

      @@Zu3sUK I'm going to go out on a limb and say you hated the game Soma, too. The point of that game? Was that everything was futile from the position of Simon. All that time, all the work, all that fear and the build up... and the version of Simon you play at the end doesn't get to experience the rewards for his effort. But unlike this game, Soma offered a glimpse into what the ARK was. If this game had shown you what was on the other side, would you have felt better about the ending? Genuine question. I'm wondering if it's the lack of reward/closure that you hate here.
      I think this game was always meant to be an exercise of futility. Doesn't matter what the character does... it's too late and the civilization/world is over. The "parasites" have taken over and your character will rot with the rest. After walking by so many bodies (individuals I imagine had been sent on the same journey as this character), I'm surprised you thought you'd survive to see the end at all. In the end .. we're just the Simon that got left behind to suffer at the bottom of the ocean. Alone.

    Still can’t believe this game finally came out. It feels like 10 years I’ve been waiting. I’m pretty close to the end and I’m very happy that it’s on the shorter side. It’s a great game but I feel like it would definitely get boring if it was like 10 hours. I know some gamers think every game should be like 25 hours minimum for some reason but 5 hours is perfect for a horror experience like this. Also it’s not like they are charging 70$ for it

    Scorn is achieving (through meticulous care, congruent design, and purpose), what Agony couldn't do for me: a mind-melting hellscape of meat and dread. This is so uncomfortable in the most intriguing way from start to finish.

      @csongorkakuk5871 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did think of Agony when watching this, too! Although, Scorn looks to be much more unique and better executed, it does already get a little tiring too see flesh and blood everywhere and this is allegedly only the halflway point. It might have been a little more interesting to have an occasional scenery in the game where nothing gross happens (like flashbacks to the alien world before it became like this) so that we can catch a breath of fresh air every 30 minutes or so? With that said, I'm all in for the rest of the game!

Cheers to that because I have another person to watch while I unwind after a long day of work 🍻

Another thing worth mentioning. This game released in a well optimized finished state! The developers did an amazing job here. This game is niche, but deserves all the recognition and support .

    I can't believe we finally got Darkseed 3. I mean Scorn.
    I'm very much looking forward to John's post-mortem on this game. I'm enjoying the playthrough because I LOVE the scenery and aesthetic. I don't find it horrifying as much as totally alien; coupled with the lack of lore it makes wondering what this dying (transforming?) world was, is, and could become is a fun thought experiment. I think there's an art book coming out early next year and I'm considering buying that *instead* of the game itself because the puzzles and combat kinda take me out the experience. I wish there were a pure walking sim/exploration version. I hope that happens someday, I could see myself finally buying a VR headset and just chilling out to the atmospheric sounds.

    My guess about the lore based on what I've seen so far.
    The protagonist is one of the drones/ workers. He is tasked with maintaining a living space ship. The demo/ prologue was the him trying to get the ship to function again. When it happens, the whole ship was flooded. The drone was wrapped and placed back inside a cocoon. Or maybe he just get digested/ turned into a primordial goo to be cooked up into a drone when needed.
    When the ship lands on the planet, it burrows itself into the planet's crust. The cocoons/ eggs containing the workers were laid all over the place (including the cliff side). The drones were awakened one by one. They either died because of unknown diseases, or the planet's atmosphere were toxic. When the protagonist wakes up (again), the ship has already filtered the air enough for him to survive.
    At this point I guess the protagonist's quest will be to keep running errands to prepare for the arrival of the true owners of the planet. Getting things up and running, killing the hostile local creatures, etc.
    There seemed to be at least 2 types of humanoids. One is the more "bony" looking ones, like the protagonist and the disfigured dude he sawed out of the egg. The other was more human looking (like the guy from one of the 4 pods that died immediately after he was let out). I guess the "fleshy" type was higher up in the hierarchy, a manager of sorts. When the protagonist took out the key and the lotus pod - looking thing (at 57:40), he took out a vital part of the life support system. So the "manager" dies and he sort of takes over.
    Still don't know what the deal was with the parasite/ symbiote, though. Perhaps it was supposed to merge with the managers and assist them. But it's waited for too long and upon seeing the protagonist it just went 'Eh, close enough' and attached itself to him.
