    I'm almost 40 years old, so every game I complete is a challenge, lol. Just the time management to find 100 hours to put toward a game feels like should be an achievement unlock in itself.
    Dark Souls 3 and Hollow Knight are the two I'm most proud of. Couple on this list I added to my wishlist as well. Maybe I'll get around to them before the AARP comes for me.

    • @ricardodarcangelo2437
      @ricardodarcangelo2437 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can respect that there are challenges for some games, especially if it's a genre you're not familiar with, which is itself, a pretty challenging game to begin with. When 1st playing DS2 6-7 years ago, it was tough going for a long time; it was too slow of a game to just let reflexes take over, and too fast to simply strategize my way through it.
      It took many months of playing every day to get it done.
      I will add however, Age has nothing to do with it, unless maybe just getting into games recently? Not having time, I understand, but our age (38 tomorrow) doesn't hold us back.
      Kids are grown, and everybody else is dead or might as well be, so time isn't a factor to me, outside of 40 hours and visiting my kids.
      Have more confidence though... I know it's just games for you, but confidence and believing in ourselves in everything we do, becomes 10× more important as we hit 40 and beyond. I'm sure in your case, you have more important things to focus that energy on, but it doesn't mean you couldn't do so with gaming if you wished.
      Congrats on Ds3, and especially Hollow Knight though! That's definitely an achievement to be sure

      DS3 is an accomplishment. I just beat DS on Switch including all DLC. Went back to Dragon Storm Rider & I can take the Dragon out but I can't beat him , and I want to play the DLC so bad.

      @@ricardodarcangelo2437 I played games growing up, but took a near 30 year break starting around Zelda: OOT...
      Little things were the biggest challenge, like because Mario 64 was pretty much one of two 3D games I'd played, getting used to camera controls being on the right stick was a pain. I still reverse both X and Y axis if the option is available in a game, and if a game doesn't give the option to invert at least the Y axis, I still can't play it to this day.
      Obviously, not so much of a problem in a game like Hollow Knight, and Souls has great options for camera work.

    Morty, I find your channel a bit of an enigma. I genuinely love your 100% 'angle', and your reviews, but...I feel like you putting all that time in doesn't really...bring...so much extra because you don't really put out much content that RELATES to the 100% stuff. I don't see Let's Plays or Guides or vids of beating crazy tough fights or, I dunno, the pain of chasing that elusive 100% and things that only you would experience. I just wonder if there's some extra stuff to leverage/capitalise on that would further distinguish you from others who are in the same space?? Thoughts?

    • @TomsonTheOne
      @TomsonTheOne ปีที่แล้ว +72

      I'd have to agree with you. I mostly watch his content because I have a similar taste and I like his down to earth way of reviewing games. The 100% completion of games is his branding, but more of a gimmick to me personally. It could and probably should be exploited a bit more, though-but he is doing exactly that with videos like this. Always glad to see when he generates a bit more leverage out of that, because that must be a huge time sink...

    I still remember trying to beat every map on highest difficulty in Stronghold. There is one in which you have to conquer castle of Pig before he arrives with reinforcements. This mission is barely possible while using exploits and playing whole time on the lowest possible speed. Small army, tatics relied on shooting from such range that accuracy was luck based and time limit. One of the hardest 'achievements' ever in games.
    On the opposite I've 100% in Shadow Tactics with all achievements on highest difficulty (even if not required) and it was great experience whith almost no luck involved. Careful planning and execution.
    Also 100% on Starcraft 2 was challenging but one of better gameing experiences.
    I rarely even try to 100% RPG games as this involves multiple playthroughs and sometimes using guides to check hidden achivements and I almost never use those in games.

  • @xNPCx

    Pillars of Eternity The Ultimate is probably my greatest CRPG achievement.

  • @armelior4610
    @armelior4610 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    What about the longest games to 100% ? I'm currently replaying DA origins and there are IIRC 4 endings and 4 romances so you need at least 4 playthrough to get all + there are achievements for all the talent trees so you probably need at least 2 mages playthrough + 1 warrior + 1 rogue + there are 6 origins + some quests have different outcomes etc.
    I can't imagine doing all of that in a row without being bored at the game, and you need a flowchart to optimize the time it takes I suppose. That does sound like work ^^
    And this is far from the biggest RPG out there : in BG2 there are about 10 different strongholds that you need to progress through the game to complete...

You must also have some funny and frustrating stories with certain achievements that would be very interesting to hear.

    • @AhbibHaald
      @AhbibHaald ปีที่แล้ว

      If you don't do it as a job like mortismal, it's pretty easy in most games. If you want to get into it, start with semi-linear games. My first (excluding absolver) was arkham asylum, which took me only 25 hours. Then deathloop, 35. Of course you must like the game to 100% it, otherwise it's a slog. I'm now trying arkham city but it takes so fucking long, you need to get all stars on all challenges and campaigns with all characters and more. There are games which are even worse, some of them i wouldn't even try, ever. Pathfinder wotr is one of them i think, lmao. Way too much time required, I don't get paid, unlike mortismal.

    I comment very rarely (unless I want to let you know that Freedom Force still is a game you should definitely check out at some point ;-)), but I have just the right anecdote from my first Dark Souls 3 playthrough for this video. Mild spoiler warnings for a seven year old game, I guess.
    A couple of years ago, after many months of hard work, a friend of mine finally convinced me to play a FromSoftware title. I picked up DS 3 and, to my surprise, I found it very enjoyable despite being kicked around by basically everything. I got good, or at least, good enough, and became confident that I'd be able to finish the game completely on my own. Until I met Yhorm th Giant. Mind you, after the 10th or so death and no progress on the gigantic healthbar, I figured out that there had to be a trick. I even checked the arena and found Storm Ruler, a weapon that would have trivialized the fight. I just didn't know how to make it work because I didn't grasp many of the games mechanics. After getting stomped another couple of times while carrying this "useless" weapon, I decided to return to what had served me well until that point in time, a simple longsword and shield.
    Long story short, it took me about two days until I managed to poke Yhorm to death and I felt a mixture of elation and extreme stupidty when my friend, while almost shitting himself laughing, explained to me how you were supposed to defeat him. Sadly, I wasn't even rewarded with an achievement for my efforts, but I guess it's the memories we collect along the way that are the real achievement, am I right? ;-)

    Soulstice may have been a one-off for a review (thus far), but I think your video on it was the best, fairest and among the most in-depth pieces of coverage on it thus far. It gave me something new to consider regarding the pacing of the game, with the middle of a normal casual playthrough being the weakest, and like i said-- you were very fair in your judgement, though still positive about it despite the issues you had.
    I haven't watched many of your other videos, but I do want to take a moment to thank you for that video, and generally give my respects to the effort you put into making the videos what they are.
    Soulstice a game that I dearly hope will gain traction to be able to get more titles that polish up the shortcomings, build upon what works and may tell great new tales. And similarly, i hope the studio may be able to get by and thrive, to live up on their own potential.
    With that said -and i'm a bit late on this- , wish you and anyone who reads this a good 2023.

    The most difficult game I ever did 100% on was the original Tomb Raider on the original Playstation. This was with zero cheat codes or strategy guides when it came out. Took me literally months to beat it. The worst part was that the graphics weren't great and I couldn't find the door at the bottom of the underwater pyramid. Took me three weeks just to get past that part, had to take a break for a week I was so frustrated. And then you have the final level that you had to do perfectly to beat. If you died, you started the level over.
    The most impressive 100% I ever saw was my brother in law beating Super Ghosts and Goblins on the Super Nintendo. We both beat the first pass which was insanely hard, but when I found out I had to go back and do it again while finding a hidden key, I gave up. However he grinded it out and finished. Simply amazing.

    • @ricardodarcangelo2437
      @ricardodarcangelo2437 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, specifically, you have 2 checkpoints in the Great Pyramid; but each one is back to back to back death traps, with very little room for error. It was really exhilarating at 10-11 years old to be able to not only finish the level, but do so in style lol! Can't relate to the door in Atlantis; but for me, it was getting the damn uzis! I really needed them for my style of play, and could not figure it out... and no guides were available in 1996 lol. I remember finally getting them, and dying repeatedly trying to get back.
      Regardless, kudos on that, the old days were good times for new things in games

    Have to admit I was tempted to suggest a few except the realization that a given game might be hard for me does not mean it would be hard for others. This is particularly true with action oriented games as advancing age and arthritis are starting to make molasses in Janruary look speedy. I have to ask, however, have you ever tried the Xcom games? While not huge on rpg mechanics (ok, almost non-existent rpg mechanics) they are one of the most demanding tactical combat franchises ever with a truly unforgiving rng that has brought many experienced gamers to the forefront of unbridled rage. Pathfinder WotR is one of my favourite games, though as a PnP player I didn't like some of the 'cheesy' ways you could up your AC/Damage etc. I therefore played it on Core with the mod 'Closer to Tabletop' which takes away those options as things like Magical Vestiment now Provide Armor bonus (which doesn't stack with other armor bonuses) rather than just a random floating AC bonus you could stack up. This affects the gameplay drastically (especially when playing a castor) and was really enjoyable. [edit] I have about 900 hrs into the game!

    Just finished wotr today (started on core then bumped it up to hard). The difficulty is really wonky. Act 1 is by far the hardest part and by Act 4 you can steam roll everything in one round with the right builds. The hardest part for me was learning the system. But once you do it kind of evaporated the challenge (unless you purposely go for a build that will struggle with poor stats or something). Honestly felt like BG1 and 2 maintained a steadier difficulty. My party felt invincible by the end of act 3. Kind of made the second half of the game a bit of a slog.

    • @Merumya
      @Merumya ปีที่แล้ว

      same. even though I dont really agree on BG2 having a steadier difficulty. you could solo the entirety of BG2 with a wizard/sorcerer and even most parts of the addon. if you were willing to cheese you could do even that.

    • @MC-yt1uv
      @MC-yt1uv ปีที่แล้ว

      It will just depend on personal preference. Both modes are solid. Some things to keep in mind though:
      Turn-based: Way better for magic users since it gives you way more control over which enemies you can target with spells. For instance, in real time you might chuck a fireball only for all of the enemies to run out of the way. It is also slightly better for rogues and related classes since you can line up sneak attacks easier.
      Real-time: Better for melee fighters it is easier since you can get everyone to rush in at a target at once. Also, initiative is pretty useless in real-time, since everyone is moving at the same time initiative gives only a marginal benefit.

    Whenever I see gamers complain about difficulty, I remember the time that I kept wiping (or rather almost wiping and quickly loading my save) on a boss fight in the original Dragon Age, only to discover, years later, that it was one of those fights that you are "supposed" to lose. Oh well.

Games that I actually find hard to beat X-COM UFO Defence, Battle Brothers and Darkest Dungeon those games are designed to crush you.
