Akhnaten - Akhnaten and Nefertiti

  • An orchestral transition prepares the scene, which is devoted entirely to a duet between Akhnaten and Nefertiti.
With the introduction of the solo trombone, the Scribe begins reciting a poem. The first time we hear the poem it is as if addressed to a god.
With the entrance of the strings, the poem is heard again, this time spoken as an exchange between two lovers. During this second reading, Akhnaten and Nefertiti appear. There follows the duet between the two, not alone together. The vocal text is the same poem sung in Egyptian.
At the end of the duet the music returns to the orchestra alone. There is a brief pause, then Akhnaten and Nefertiti resume singing while behind them is seen the funeral cortege in a later stage of its journey, this time ascending on wings of large birds to the heavenly land of Ra.
Text: Recited by the Scribe and then sung in Egyptian by Akhnaten and Nefertiti (love poem found in a royal mummy of the Armarna period, from Journal of Egyptian Archæology, translated by Sir Alan Gardiner)
I added the lyrics in Egyptian with translations, taken from Philip Glass's web site (www.glasspages.org/akhnaten.ht.... I had to place them at the top left since the bottom center already had some subtitles.
Cast (This was the Feb 23, 2013 performance.):
    Akhnaten: Nicholas Tamagna
    Queen Tye: Olivia Savage
    Nefertiti: Sarah Ballman
All rights belong to the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University.

This is my favorite part of this opera, but I still find it morbid that the lyrics are taken from one side of a coffin.
The text reads like an erotic poem but it is about preservation of the essence of the dead when the funerary rites are observed.

I just saw the new MET production yesterday, and I must say this "amateur" one is still head and shoulders above. In this particular duetto, Tamagna and Ballman achieve such an amazing chemistry and manage to create a fascinating sense of intimacy that's completely lacking in McDermott's version. And the orchestra is also so carefully balanced and actually MAKING MUSIC along with the singers, not just playing the notes underneath. An amazing feat.

I too saw the Met production, just Saturday, relayed to Europe in my local cinema. Previously I knew the work through the recording conducted by Russell and the few video extracts online. I found the Met production musically less exciting and visually ultra distracting.

@@joemancini2988 It's just an opinion. There's still much to be liked in McDermott's production, if his style is up your alley. It didn't really work for me because I wasn't sold on the juggling thing, and generally found the visuals way too distracting too. Also, I felt the music could have been more nuanced, but it could be just me being too attached to the Dennis Russell recording. I've only seen the MET version once.

    • @joemancini2988

Dion Baillargeon I have to say I got on board with McDermott. The “brownian motion” created by the jugglers created a visual analog to the endless patterns and repetitions in the music. My final take on this is that this will become the “definitive” realization, certainly Glass feels that way. I may not consider Glass a great composer, but he is a great opera composer, the most consequential American opera composer, I dare say.

@@theOstenHugo erring on the side of the possibility that you're not just trolling me, VHS is an acronym for a technology called Vertical Helical Scan. This is a physical media product where magnetic tape was used to record images and audio. The 'casette' was decoded through a VCR that sent analog video and L, R audio signal to the television. Like today with digital media there were various formats. US used NTSC I think France used SECAM, some countries used PAL. There was a competing product called Betamax which provided better quality but VHS won out in the marketplace, I believe due to it's lower price point. TLDR: VHS is a physical tape. not online not digital.

    A wonderful performance!
I wish some of the libretto had been in the Coptic language of Egypt, the language of Egyptian Christian liturgy. This would have been especially appropriate for the parts of the opera referring to the influence of Akhnaten's beliefs on Abrahamic religions. Instead, the creators of the opera used languages not indigenous to the country for this purpose. In doing so, they chose not to honor Egyptian Christians by giving them a voice.

    • @tamcon72
      @tamcon72 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

It is because there were no Christians in Egypt--nor any other nation--at this point in history, so using Coptic Egyptian in the libretto would have been anachronistic and bizarre. You have posted this comment repeatedly without apparently understanding the subject matter of the work: It's about _ancient_ Egypt. Here's a good synopsis: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akhnaten_(opera)

akhenaten was one of the first democrats, that rushed the old gods in egypt and founded the sun as the spring of all live.
the old priests were very angry about that. because of that they detroyed most of the images of echnaton and nofretete,
akhenaten and nefertiti. the jews, that went out of egypt some years later, took the idea of a "one and only god" out from
their slavery in egypt into their own promised land israel. insofar akhenaten was the founder of the monotheism. a lot of the struggle in our nowaday comes out of the several names - for one creator, one god, one idea. people are strange...

This opera's selective history is so hilariously dumbed down. Historically, we know that Akhnaten made his wife Nefertiti "Co-King", and she portrayed herself publicly as a male under the name Smenkhkare, and Akhnaten himself portrayed himself in public imagery as having a dual gender. Do we get any of that interesting historical intrigue in this vacuous opera other than the role being played as a contra-alto? No. Do you think maybe they might, in this opera, talk about selecting their new identities and shaping their public personae? It makes you wonder how stupid opera goers are. Do they care about the historical events that this is based on? Do they even know that history was way more interesting than this minimalist version? Later Akhnaten elevated two of his own daughters to status of "royal wife" and had children with them. Nothing about that in this opera. Instead we see this stupid scene in the garden where they wax empty, meaningless poetry about their eternal love. Um, hello. There's a lot more to their lives than this empty posing, and swimming in ostinato arpeggios.
