- I added the lyrics in Egyptian with translations, taken from Philip Glass's web site (www.glasspages.org/akhnaten.ht.... I had to place them at the top left since the bottom center already had some subtitles.
Cast (This was the Feb 23, 2013 performance.):
Akhnaten: Nicholas Tamagna
Queen Tye: Olivia Savage
Nefertiti: Sarah Ballman
All rights belong to the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University.

Good news. The Met is bringing its production of Akhnaten back in the 2021-2022 season.
... just saw it ... past 25/01/2020 ... satelite HD .... poor Akhnaten was so happy at the end ... hairless waxing & heavy lush customs he told were a nightmare .....
Sounds great. I would absolutely love to see it again!
Do you mean 2121/22? :)
gross
@@dennisdeemii Real art lover, eh?
burst into tears this unacceptably sublime.
I do so wish someone would put the entire Met production on DVD some day!
And their Satyagraha!
@@markweiss1898 There is actually a DVD of Satyagraha - they have it on Amazon
@@judygrover4252 yes, thanks. But it's not quite the Met Opera production. I love the Christopher Keene CD though. The Met version was recorded and shown on TV. So it exists. I would love to see it again.
Yes, PLEASE! There are many of us who would willingly pay more than usual for such a dvd... It was an incredible production!!
That would be amazing! Having the opportunity of enjoying such wonderful performances again, how great it would be!
This is incredible. He is a genius- there is no one like him!
The blend of voice types in this just SLAYS me.
Kudos to a college for tackling this notably complex work!
I added this to my pump up playlist cause i heard it absolutely slapped, and i was not disappointed. Ive never cranked out better reps then when i was listening to this song. this is almost better than my current favorite, a six hour loop of cannon shots against different surfaces. I eventually had to stop working out cause i was jamming so hard. talk about a song thats easy to sing along to. would 10/10 recommend.
i maxed out yesterday. i have never pulled a 60 pound deadlift faster in my life. 7:50 is really what did it for me. no sound necessary. i just projected it on a giant screen in front of me
Most marvelous music, costumes, singers, energy, magic and ensemble work. Tue High art and ritual . Love Philip Glass. I LOVED it
A work of absolute genius.
Fantastic my favourite opera and my favourite composer and my favourite tract what perfection see it at ENO 6 times or maybe more
Like a bolt from the blue, epic beauty.
Overwhelming wondrous.
Matt and Ross Duffer are Fucking *GENIUSES* .
I AM CURRENTLY BAWLING MY EYES OUT TO THIS MOTION OF AKKAHNAANTEN THIS IS SUCH A PRETTY PRETTY SONG I AM HAVE LOVE FOR SONG
I love the counter tenor voice Philip Glass you are legend
I saw this opera at the Met HD live cinema. I wish they had used the subtitles when the singers sing in Egyptian. Thank you so much. It makes a big difference when you understand what they are singing.
there was a bit of an explination in some of the material from the playbil, it seems intentional
since we know so little of the amarna period and all we have are fragmentary tableuxs Glass aparently decided he was into the mystery of it, which is why he opted to put most of the opera in dead languages and vocalized sylables, it was why he didnt add a lot of extra narative to fill, he thought it left things ephemeral and mysterious
Matthew Janney Thank you for this information . It confirms what I meant about the frustration of not understanding what is happening.
The Soprano who plays Queen Tye is gorgeous!
Right up there among the greatest operatic masterpieces.
Among the most beautiful music I've ever heard. Been waiting nearly 30 years to say that to another human being. Thank you.
You obviously have not heard much music if you think this crap is beautiful
@@57monks Get a room Logan.
Jesus, just going video to video spreading your drivel.
@@57monks Thank you for your reply. It alerted me that this video with this beautiful music is here, I think I'll watch it again and melt in awe of its splendor. You trolls have my pity, you find no beauty in the world and must mock those of us who discover a gem here and there and treasure what they find.
@@flagcoco69 yes, please melt! Just make sure you have someone to clean up after you
@@57monks Seeing people argue over Philip Glass is quality entertainment
I played this at my family reunion a while back, and as it was well reverted by everyone I decided to play it again, but this time put the video up on a projector so they could see it better. Soon everyone was crowded around watching intently, crying, and over all lamenting on the death of The Hamster (long story). When those two other strangely clad being waddled their way on stage, the crowd went wild, everyone was throwing things, and by then had almost forgotten The Hamster.
relatable. my friend's pet hamster died a while back (long story). i snuck into their family reunion and found them projecting this song. all that could be heard was them sobbing and groaning, all watching intently at the projector. i ran around the house looking for items that i could steal, knocking over a few vases here and there, but they never seemed to notice as they were fixated on the projector. i made my self comfortable and when the song ended, i set up a 6 hour loop of cannon shots hitting different surfaces. not a dry eye in that house. those 6 hours past in almost an instant. as to not bore any of the guests, i decided to switch it up. i then played siri's voice saying "the window of appearances" on repeat. that was in 2/13/2019. still not a dry eye in this house.

SUBLIME !! No other words to describe this gorgeous masterpiece !!
I have seen the performance in the National Opera and I still remember the feeling of immersion into this incredible reality. Thank you for reminding this
Absolutely beautiful. I have not seen a production before. I love the music, but being able to see the production is like one plus one equals ten. Thanks for posting this. Major composer, major work. The sort of genius that cannot be imitated.
I agree totally. However the failure of the met to subtitle the Hebrew reply to the Akhnaten's Prayer was unforgivable.
Thank you so much for uploading this! Akhnaten is one of my favorite operas, and this in particular is my favorite part.
I can't wait to see this opera at the Met in 2019- 2020 season.
To see and to hear this live, young oh, please do give yourself this awesome experience! WOW!
@George Dugas I saw it yesterday in a movie theater in sweden (the met premiere) it was still awe-inspiring, a truly powerful experience.
@George Dugas there is an encore Met HD show in theatres across the world, Dec 4. 2019.
I can wait. How about till 2120?
Caught part of it on the radio as part of the Met's live broadcast! I would to hear/see the entire performance!!!
A little side project; adding Egyptian, Akkadian, and Hebrew subtitles to videos of Akhnaten. Akhnaten - The Window Of Appearances
VERY AMAZING, VERY BEAUTIFUL.
I cried enough to flood a small city if the city is smaller than a house and this was because it was the most unacceptably sublime piece of media/content ever.
woah
i couldn't agree more
Your direction was excellent! I can tell that a lot of research went into the production and as a result it is wonderful to see. I'm adding the synchronized lyrics for my own benefit but I hope other people find them useful.
Beautiful! Thank you for the upload.
Thank you for these wonderful segments! It's the generous actions of good people like yourself that enriches TH-cam and the Internet :-)
I don't understand why the school isn't releasing the whole opera ... we would pay!
Thank you for the lyrics in both languages. This makes it very special.
Thank you sooo much for thee wonderful gift! i ve been longing to SEE the opera since the very first time i took the cds...
Roberto Tifi what’s a “CD” ?
Thanks Patrick i was lloking forward to see this great aria on video since it has never been performed in my country (Mexico), we had Einstein on the beach last year which i had the privilege to see
I second that, would love to see the duet especially. Thank you for the posts. Truly appreciate it!
The counter tenor is just superb
Would you have a name ?

Can't wait to see it at the opera this November !

Mr. Glass is a genius of genii. For me, he comes right after Beethoven....
Glass comes second after BACH!
@@cristianbranea5034 No, maybe before Bach...who knows. Tastes are different. 😀

ThankyouThankyouThankyou for posting. I doubt I'll ever get a chance to see this live so thanks again for posting.
Playing London as of this writing (Feb 2019). They say it might come to the Met in NYC.
I have tickets for May !
Wonderful!
Wow. Just wow. Here is the birth of counter-intuitive monotheism accompanied by extraordinary music.Wow.
Such a great production at IU! (And fun for me, as I was an arts administration student in the late 70s and took an opera appreciation course and saw many productions there)
thanks Candace! ... and to maowmirit for posting the comment, so that I can now put aside time to enjoy the concert in its entirety. Mr. Joiner's efforts aside, it was such a tease! I have been awaiting a performance of this for years, and while I couldn't get out to Indiana, I will settle for this ... thank you, thank you.
Breathtaking
Gorgeous
Merci.
Magnificent
More of this opera Please!!!!
Thank you for posting this-and especially for the supertitles. I would not have appreciated the marvelousness of this scene without them. Before I saw this, based on brief exposure, I had written Philip Glass off as a wanker. This music, though, is serious, profound, and sacred.
Que expresión tan horrible eso de gilipollas.
mesmerizing.
And they put this to Stranger things soundtrack.
What a masterpiece. It is immortal guys!
This composition and performance saved my belief in the Met, post-Levine era.
Superba!
....amazing, brilliant, astounding performance of Akhnaten!!!....
....it teleports you back to His time...
...thank you for posting it....
I hope to see this performed live. I hope the Met's plans can still move forward with this for their 21/22 season.
Well then have you watched it yet?
Sweet!

Thanks for posting I saw this at the ENO London 1984/5 and loved it I remember sand covered the stage as they constructed Armana and then at the end the sand was all smoothed out to signify the destruction and the modern day tourist's visiting Tel-el-arrmana It remains by far my fav opera

Stranger Things yeah baby
When, where, and by what company was this performed? Is the DVD available?
Why can't Indiana University release a DVD of the complete recording, preferably with English sub/surtitles like yours?
Does anyone know when or where this might be performed again,in 2020?
Glass!
Did you have the full presentation? Unafortunatelly this was take down from the Indiana University's page
Akhnaten (Tamagna) has good technique and a pleasant sound.
I wish Houston Grand Opera would do this some day!!!
geet lush!
when can i purchase this?
Wenenet (existence) reminds me of the root of the Greek verb for becoming (gigne-sthai) while geneck appears similar the Greek word for woman (nominative gyne, genitive gynaikos) and also similar to the root for giving birth: gene-, as in genesis and gene/genome, etc. Pet (birds) is similar to the Greek root pet- for flying (pet-ein) and for bird (e.g. pte-non, pet-einon). Coincidence?
My dog died last week, so ive been pretty down lately. i was recommended this song by my archeologist, and i didnt know that it was sad. i kid you not my eyes rained tears for the full fourteen minutes until i started drowning in my own tears. I now extremely regret killing my dog, as this sing was a punishment beyond belief.
wow man!!
powerful
Dear friend i wish music cure the sorrow you feel soon or later.
Damn I need to replace my archeologist, he keeps trying to prescribe me Babylonian tablets but I can't make sense of any of them.
Unbelievable atmosphere.
Waiting for Stranger Things fans to find this

what's stranger things got to do with this?
