excellent analogy on this car, COMFORT-charging curve-and route planing, this is all that is necessary for normal family road tripping, AND purchasing a used one, WIN WIN WIN

Thanks guys. I have a 2024 EQS and these are excellent insights for how I should use my car.

Definitely a more realistic view on the practicalities of road tripping in an EV, than other summaries. With just a driver or with passengers, in reality, you stop every 2-4 hours (to eat, bathroom etc) and each stop/charge would be longer. You'd end up with fewer charging but longer charging stops, staying at hotels with destination chargers will also alleviate any charging issues. In summary, for most of the cars, maybe not the 85d, you'd get there just as quickly under normal conditions, maybe over 4-5 days and 3 or 4 hotels. Jordan is absolutely right about Germany, and it applies to the UK too. You don't do 10 over unless you want a ticket and potentially lose your license. The GOM in my Audi Etrons, first wa s 55 and the 2nd was a Q8, is extremely accurate and modifies with speed changes (roadworks etc). I think the EQS would be the same but maybe not. BTW, all cars (apart from a few CHAdeMo's, are CCS in the UK and Europe, including Teslas. We will never have NACS (Elon) take over and that's good, our charging network in UK and Europe seems to be a lot better than yours (obviously though, you have greater distances). In the UK, over 100 Tesla charging stations are available to all other CCS brands and that option occurs across Europe.

Such a great car, I don't mind the styling.

As a 2023 EQS 580 owner, I was anxious for your analysis. If you could have charged at Tesla SCs, I think you would have done much better. Were you disappointed with maximum charging at 200 KW while Tesla can do 250? I’m disappointed its maximum AC charging is only 9.6 kW while my Tesla is 11.5 for 20% faster charging. Rear wheel steering in this very log car is outstanding. I’m spoiled.
We chose the EQS after returning Lucid GT due to too many software bugs. Since your parent’s age, the EQS pampers us better than any other EV.

The race made for an interesting story but I agree with the EQS trip style.

Great analysis, guys. The Ioniq 6 team got screwed by their own charging hubris a few times and it's exactly what you said - they would have been faster if they had just charged to at least 80% each time instead of cutting off in the 60s. Then they would have been able to go full speed the whole time and maybe skip a few stops. 180kw sounds a lot slower than 240, but in practical terms on a battery that size it's a difference of like a minute (minute 15 for 20% of the battery) which is easily made up on the road. Trying to arrive at 0% every time has a theoretical advantage in optimal conditions, but you have to be perfect to pull it off and there are just too many variables in the real world for that.

I think on a german Autobahn the EQS would even do better compared with other cars, because on higer speed the air resistance matters even more.

Charging at 25% SOC? First road trip may be, but 5-15% is normal with an OK infrastructure.

good debrief guys.......did you calculate where you'd finish without the police interaction? WRT total stop time fully agree; you only have to look at F1 as example where the car is stationary for +2sec but the total pit stop time is ~20sec....similar to EV slow down, off hwy, find charger, connect, charge (food/bathroom break) disconnect, load up, back on hwy etc all without issues with charger or charging!

With a nice flat charging curve it really makes no sense to charger hop and try to game it down to rolling into chargers at single digit SOC. It cost all of those teams time gaming the charging hops. Any leg you have to limp you are loosing way more than sitting at a charger for a few more minutes. The only leg you really want to game it is that last leg into Boston. Any gas already in the tank is just that much less charging you have to do at the stop. Flat charging curve would make this kind of travel lazy and fast.
The bottom line is most people would be breaking this trip up into single day trips, stop at a hotel, rinse and repeat. All of these cars other than the Old MS could have done that and covered the miles needed in a day. I don't think there was a car in this race that couldn't accomplish that within a reasonable amount of time.
I would like to see what the average EV class would do in a similar race to see how much more time than the "supercars" from the Surge.

And, we have to be real. Like you say, for today's owners it's peaches and cream versus older Model S owners, who see 120KW for seconds and quickly witness it fall to, or below, 70KW at 50 miles, or ~25% SOC. Everything is proportionate (accept for maybe LFP), where these nickel batteries will gimp a bit over time.

Why do you guys always make so many derogatory comments about the appearance of the EQS? Seems to me that it's one of the best-looking cars of all.
