Suzuki has established a solid reputation for small four-wheel drives and the SX4 follows in the tradition of vehicles like the SJ, the Jimny and the Vitara. It is, however, quite a different proposition, not being a 'proper' 4x4, instead being a smallish hatchback with a raised body height and contrary to popular opinion, not all of the models feature all-wheel drive. Here's the low down on what you should be looking for when buying a used SX4.
    History
The Suzuki SX4 project is very much a case of 'you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours'. Suzuki needed a diesel engine for this vehicle. Fiat had diesel engines aplenty but wanted a well-built niche model in its range. A deal was signed, Suzuki got the 1.9-litre diesel powerplant and Fiat got a new model in their line up which they dubbed the Sedici.
Fiat took thirty per cent of the 60,000 cars that rolled out of the Magyar Suzuki plant in Hungary, the remaining two thirds being sold globally as the Suzuki SX4. Whereas the Sedici was quite a simple concept to understand, the SX4 range is more varied and only one of the models, the 1.6 GLX 4GRIP, features all wheel drive. That this version is the best seller is perhaps unsurprising as without the benefit of this all-weather traction, the SX4 seems a bit of an oddity.
The Peugeot-sourced 1.6-litre DDiS diesel engine was introduced early in 2008.

I've had mine for 8 years and I would recommend anyone buying one as a run about. It's been reliable but I have spent a lot on new tyres. One plus thing that isn't mentioned often is when you remove the rear seats, which is easy to do, there is a large flat loading area in the back. Great for runs to the tip or like me to convert to a car camper. This is what I've done with mine and I've posted a load of videos over the last year or so - I've had a lot of fun with it and some great nights away!

Really reliable, have had one for about 5 yeara, never given me issues. I .aintain it, i service it myself, change its engine oil, engine air filter etc etc but apart from that nothings seems to break on it. And its a crossover i like that higher driving position in it

I bought the SX 4 when they were first introduced in the US for $12,000 brand new 18 years later still running fine 94,000 miles on it all wheel drive is excellent. I just bought a set of headlight boxes for $270. Makes it look like brand new.🚙🤪

Great video... Just seen a 2011 4WD of this - and this is the best video I can find on the SX4... seems to have escaped video!

It was never very popular BUT it IS still very reliable (the best car I've had in that regard).
The best way to find a reliable car is to look for the comments of roadside repair/towing company technicians.
I found their comment was that this car almost never showed up in their "problem list", so that means it's a very reliable car.
The 4 wheel version is almost as expensive as the 2 wheel version BUT has more fuel consuption ofcourse, so every advantage has its own disadvantage.

Another issue is that the steering wheel is on the wrong side 😉 I'm currently looking to buy a 2010 auto with 63,000km on it. I watched my son's buddy rip through snow on our street with one of these when the grader was stuck on the same street! That sold me. This is in central Saskatchewan (-45C winter with LOTS of snow that doesn't melt until April or May). They seem to go cheap because they are no longer made, and there are no dealers here in N. America. I checked and parts are still available though.

Have the 1.6 peteol as a run around, was initially the main car but have since gotten a new one, however the 2010 car went through its MOT this year with zero advisories, so couldnt get rid.
It's a tank. One thing I will say though is that the turning circle is deceptively bad for a car of this size, one manoeuvres you'd expect it to handle like Corsa/Clio etc...but it turns wide.

Basically a jacked up Swift (in itself an excellent car). Very cheap secondhand - overlooked as a smaller 4wd option. Check out the identical and even cheaper Fiat Sedici. Usual brilliant Suzuki engines, very reliable, low MOT failure rate but watch out for broken springs, terrible split A pillar blind spot (why I ended up selling mine) and on petrols catalyst sensors which fail at 50k miles (easy fairly cheap fix). Usual Suzuki small boot but roofrails allow option of roofrack/roofbox.

@@francisj4058 it's great for the city for the size and visibility! But also decent in rural areas! The only thing is highways in big open fields, the car is light and can catch a lot of side wind 😅 but this car has never failed me, I've never been stuck in the Minnesota snow

Visibility? The front arms that hold the roof and hold the windshield have a one of the worst blind spots i have ever seen in a vehicle. Love my sx4 but she has her flaws.
