take your dog outside more, especially in the morning. your body produces serotonin when you're exposed to sunlight, you don't have to be directly in the sun. serotonin is the precursor to melatonin. it'll be good for both of you,
❌ Make sure there is no XYLITOL in it! ❌
This is awesome my…14 yr old pup often wakes up fussing at night making crazy noises. I will try this for him. Thank you!
Just looked at my Melatonin - Xylitol is the first listed “other ingredients.” THANK YOU!
I was checking low dose melatonin for my small anxious terrier and also noticed on the back under "Other Ingredients, the first listed was Xylitol. Not on every brand, but something to check carefully.
this
Thank you for mentioning the Xylitol. That TOXIC product needs to be recalled and banned. Why do they put a toxic ingredient in Melatonin, which is a healthy product?
Informing pet parents the way he Dr Jones does, such a blessing!!
Amen to that! 🙏🏻
Dr. Jones, you are absolutely right about the use of melatonin for dogs. I have a sixteen-year-old dog with some dementia and about three months ago he was keeping me up all night howling and it was me who wasn't getting rest. He was put on melatonin and now he and I both get to sleep and to me it's a wonder drug.
What serving size did you give him please? That’s fantastic
@@DianneElizabeth64 video says 1mg/10lb weight
I too have a 16 yo boy with dementia and he was pacing badly some nights. Melatonin is soooo good for our older furries.
It's regular melatonin or there's one for dogs
@@Mayra-xh3cg Regular melatonin.... there is no other. Just follow the correct dosage.
I use Melatonin 3 mg to help my dog sleep she is blind and has anxiety at night due to darkness she also has an enlarged heart so we needed to keep her calm and it has worked for her
this works for hair loss and everything you say. My daughters mini 5 lb. pom lost almost all her hair and it came almost completely back. also works for my highly immune suppressed rescued at 8weeks now 5 yrs old..papillon mix. I feed balanced home made salmon/vitamins meals I make (she eats better than we do) ;)). It all help her but have to keep on top of her weakness. I don't think she will ever be completely healed of her immunity weakness. Im now doing your flea and tic remedy for her (Daisy), she looks like a 12 lb papillon, white and apricot...so cute...love her to pieces. She's worth every bit of my energy and time and I just hope I can outlive her. I really worry about that because I'm 77. I don't think anyone would ever commit to all the care and love it takes to keep her cared for.
Bless you both. I know. No one takes better care than the person they belong to. I don't know who would do the same as I care for mine..
Write specific instructions for her care and make sure the one you want to take her if necessary, knows her needs
Best to prepare in case of any future disruption
I didn't even know animals could take melatonin! Thank you so very, very much, doc! 🙏😻
Our Maltese - Shihtzu is approaching 15, she has Cushings which we elected to treat with melatonin, adrenal homeopathy and lignins. The vet told us she would boat make it to her last birthday, well she’s here, living the dream I the farm and very happy and active.
How much Melatonin and is it a pill powder or liquid?
I have a 10 yr old chihuahua with diabetes and cushings. I found melatonin and ground flax ( lignins I think) work well for her for cushings. I put the flax on her food.
Please discuss specifics for us. I too have a 15 year old dog with cushings. Thank you
I use 3 mgs of melatonin am and pm. I sprinkle ground flax on her food. I googled flax and melatonin to figure out how much. Melatonin is about 6.00 for a bottle at Walmart. The ground flax at Walmart is about 4-5.00. I put it in my freezer.
Thank you
Found it a few years ago to treat a old staffy with Cushing's. It stopped the thirst it stopped the fur loss and even reversed it partially. Gave my boy another 12 comfortable months. Definitely something you should use if your dog is battling an auto immune disease.
This was amazing on lowering cortisol levels and helping cancer!
I have a rescue dog that was missing hair on her chest when I got her. The vet prescribed melatonin and sure enough her hair grew back. It doesn't make her sleepy either and she has no side effects from this. I wasn't aware it helps with anxiety and Cushing's as well. Great video. Thank you Dr Jones.
My rescue staffy, who I believe lived the life of a backyard breeder, hates gunfire and fireworks. I’ll be testing melatonin on her tonight.. 4th July Weekend and of course during hunting season. Thank you Dr. We need more like you for humans as well as for all animals. God bless you!
Has it helped?my babies are stressed so bad
@@robincoats989 It definitely helped!
Do you know what brand he is showing of the melatonin to give your dog? Because there’s certain ingredients that are very harmful and poison to dogs. And I don’t seem to be getting any answers from anywhere.
@@Mistylynn442 I used what I had in the house. After reading your comment I checked to see if there were any other toxic or otherwise substances in the brand I have. The answer is no. It’s Lignans for LIFE. I don’t know what brand the good Dr. Jones is using.
me too! : )
Interesting, my DIL told me MELATONIN doesn't work for dogs. She was told this by the Vet she works for. How do we know who to believe? Personally, I trust this guy. ❤❤❤
I’ll tell you my 13.5 year old dachshund is taking it at night for his dementia - he was waking up, whining, drinking and then peeing on the pads. I was not sleeping. We tried gabapentin and then trazodone from the vet. They didn’t help. Plus it’s hard on his liver. I started him on melatonin from pet wellbeing and it’s the only thing works!
I had a dog with Cushing disease and now I have a dog with cancer. Both take (took) melatonin and it helped so much!
Dr. J, you are the greatest. You are extremely appreciated by those of us who want to alternatively treat our dogs. My Frenchie is thriving because of you. I am glad that I found you a year ago!
Going to try for myself!!!
My animals and BELOVEDS are all gone!!
My anxiety and insomnia are insane!!’
THANK YOU SO MUCH
May I know how much you take and does it help ?
Ashwaghanda look into it for self. Helps anxiety and cptsd
I take it to help me with my anxiety and sleep as well. I get the 3mg NOW brand since it's minimal ingredients in the capsule and I can double it if I want instead of just taking the 3mg. Works really well.
I have a senior dog that was waking several times at night and I decided to start her on melatonin..game changer. Thank you for this valuable info.
My dog is 16, it really does help her get a much better sleep. She is sundowning, and it is tough. But it helps her a bit. I give her the same one as I take, it is a gummy. She loves them, it is her treat. I am glad that you mentioned the dosage. I wasn't giving her a very low dosage. I am glad that I can increase it. Love your video's, they are always so helpful. Thanks, Dr Jones
Be careful using any human meds because many, especially gummies or chewables, are often sweetened with Zylitol which is extremely toxic for dogs! Read ingredient labels carefully! Best to buy a melatonin capsule with zero additives
@rhonda8231
Please be sure the gummies do not contain xylitol. It is poisonous to animals.
I heard the gummy ones were not good because it has a certain ingredients in it. That is bad for dogs.
Please do not give your dog the gummies. Please read the ingredients. The sweetened ones almost always contain Xylitol (sometimes it may say birch bark or birch sugar). Xylitol is very poisonous to dogs. I give my 15 year old dog melantonin because he seems to have sundowing and wasn't sleeping at night. It works. But the vet told me to check carefully to make sure I only used the unsweetened. ones so he would not be ingesting Xylitol
My cortisol has given me belly fat from a couple of rough deaths close together, my stress has almost been disabling. Thus seems like the answer I've been needing. My dogs too, they have anxiety I think from me.
Yes! They are sensitive and pets will feed off your stress. My dog hav an ivdd episode in January that worried me like crazy then a month later a health concern for me and almost losing my home I realized my dog was getting sicker and they suspect an adrenal disease now. I'm doing everything I can for me and him to heal back😢
@@opticmusprime808 I'm giving my dogs ashwagandha now. Its a tincture for adrenal support. Lowers cortisol too.
I use melatonin for cushings in my Chihuahua. I didn’t have $$$$ for meds and did research. It works well for her along with ground flax. Oh she is diabetic as well.
I originally began using melatonin for July 4th fireworks so he wouldn’t be so anxious. Works beautifully.
Its not just produced in the pineal gland, actually the majority of it is produced in your gut and its a big help to your mitochondrial function in all mammals.
Doc, you're simply the Best 😊
.😊😊
Dr Jones , you're a gift to humanity , let alone for the animal kind ! Would say God bless you but you're already blessed ( l did it anyway) ... 🙏
Bless you too! 😊
THANK YOU DR JONES! You have been a godsend to me as a pet stylist who has seen the results of over medicating by traditional vets. I recommend your videos to ALL my clients!!!!!
I have a dog in for training who has severe separation anxiety. I give her 5 mg in the morning and it has helped immensely. My 115 pond Pit/Pyrenees got so car sick that he was miserable. Melatonin worked wonders for him.
And, this product has been a God-send for me with my insomnia. I never forget to take it.
Can cats take it as well?
Dr Andrew you are a Vet from Heaven! I love your videos they help me so much with my sick cats. Keep doing the great job! The world needs more people like you!
Great news about melatonin! Thank you Doc!
My 3 1/2 yo Presa developed flank alopecia😢 His vet told me to give him 5 mgs a day. Since he is 120#, I've been giving him 10mgs.
Fur regrowth is a slow progress, but he's beginning to look much better, and it's been about 6 weeks!💖
It works for cushings too
Thank you for this valuable information. I will be getting some for my little Shih Tzu. He will soon be 9 yrs old and is suffering from separation anxiety and consistent licking front paws. You are such a blessing and well wishes to you and family ❤❤❤
A few years ago, when one of our dogs was critically ill, we gave him Melatonin for pain, which eased his stress.
Love that anser
What can i do about dog pika
Can melentona helpe
Thank you for this information! I learn something new every time I watch your channel. You are a blessing to our pets (and parents too)
Melatonin is also used in general to help with immunomediated issues - my dog is currently on it for imunomediated polyarthritis (IMPA)
We used for Lupus.
Notice many comments about fireworks. Friends have a dog who's terrified of the noise. So (since we happened to have been motorhome camping right near the staging area) I recommended they leave their dog in their moho with their TV volume up really loud. Sure enough, their dog thought the racket was coming from their TV and so pretty much just slept thru the real, live, close by, fireworks show. They checked often, as they didn't think that trick would work. It did because their dog was so very used to hearing their loud TV, so their dog just assumed the noise was coming from their TV.
I wish I had known this 8 years ago when my dog was diagnosed with Cushings, then 2.5 years later passed away, maybe from her heart. She was on Vetoryl for I think 2 years.
Hudson 5 years old and is back on Melatonin because after a year taking it, I was suggested to stop and wait n see for his Alopecia.
This year he started loosing fur again. Could also be stress too. I was suggested Melatonin may not work the second time.
I hope it works again! Too much noise around here. He hates noise!
All three of my dogs have anxiety due to fireworks. I will start them on melatonin tonight.
WoW, I learned a lot! God bless you Doc! I've been taking melatonin since my husband died, 6 years ago. Good to know that it's safe for my dog too. 👑🙏🏻💞✝️🐾🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯
Dr. Jones is the Best. My dogs and I appreciate all the helpful videos. Thanks So Much!
Great timing for me to come across this… I just ordered some calming supplements for my dog that include melatonin. Very fascinating how much melatonin can do for both us and our animals.
My daughters dog has bad anxiety. We googled melatonin for dogs and it said not to use it with dogs. Very disappointing. I’m so glad it’s used for them. Just shows not to believe everything you read on the internet. Thank you!!
Jesus loves you doc.
God bless you a million times
I have an 11 yr old yorkie with severe separation anxiety. I've been considering trying melatonin for them. This video came at just the right time.
Dr Jones, YOU ROCK! thanks for the good info on melatonin. I have been giving it to my old fella for a few years now, for multiple reasons. One of them being to suppress estrogen since he was neutered, (before I adopted) at 8 weeks of age and he has a terrible hormone imbalance from early neutering.
REMEMBER 🤔🙌

Anna, that’s terrible! I can’t believe someone would do that…wonder if the owner did it as I can’t see a vet agreeing to.
To neuter puppy should be declared as crime, how is allowed to do destroy endocrine system fully functioning at least until whole body develops ??? There are so many simple methods to prevent overpopulation, just like in nature or helping irresponsible pet owners...
Just a beautiful video full of wisdom. And I love the body language at the end when you speak about "if you had a dog with Cancer", too precious.
Miss Tula has a lovely new hair cut. ❤🐶
I have been giving my dogs melatonin when i know we will have gun fire and fireworks. Have done this for years and they now go thru the noisey nights without fear. Many times they just sleep. Of course i also put them in our bedroom with some music. I am happy to know that it has so many other benefits. Thank you.
Bless you..❤ Dr 😊
Awesome video. I have a dog with separation anxiety that I just adopted and I will definitely be giving her melatonin starting tonight. Thank you so much.
I'm in a similar problem. I just adopted a dog about a month ago and she freaks when I leave her and if I stay gone more than two hours I come home to a destroyed house so I'll be trying it!
Let us know the results
What brand is being used for pets ? Thanks
Try to use anxiety music on TH-cam for dogs, may take awhile to dind the one that works best I used it on my dogs and did wonders for them. Also I used it on my daughter's dog when she went on vacation for a week I would work in the kitchen and kept a eye on him to see it it was working and it did ❤❤
and it really helped him to relax. I'm so grateful for youtube
@@whocares4464Try TH-cam They have anxiety for dogs music there's different ones. I've finally found the one that would work for my dogs as well as my daughter's dog.❤❤

Thank you doctor!
Great video 👍👍👍
Thanks ❤🙏
I take melatonin every day. I give it to my dog when she seems to be hyper and goes several days without sleeping at all during the daytime. It seems to straighten up that messed up pattern - happens sometimes every couple of months. One 3 mg seems to help a lot. Also if thunderstorms or fireworks - helps a bit.
My bulldogs have seasonal flank alopecia. I did some some research and it recommended Melatonin. I will definitely give it a try
My girl, Moxie gets Melatonin twice a day for her anxiety issues, I'm thrilled to see so many more benefits to the therapy. Thank you, Dr. Jones, for this information!
Can you share the type of melatonin you use? Thanks
You are a blessing. Thank you ❤
I think I am going to try this. My cat seems to have anxiety and over grooms a lot. I get her all healed up, then she does it again.

Tula is so cute with her new hair cut ❤❤
Today is July 3rd in Arizona. I will be buying some today for my 4 dogs because of the fireworks. I used to take it when I worked all nights. I always got enough sleep in the daytime with no side effects.
Unrelated to dogs, but related to melatonin. I used it every night for a little while during a period in my life when I was healing my stomach from gastritis. I refused to take the medication they gave me. One of the doctors I often went to for cosmetic work mentioned I should take melatonin at night because it would have calm the reflux. It would get really bad once I went to bed. Even if I ate hours before.
Such great information! Thank you!🤗
I found you today…what a blessing ❤️you are for pets and their family’s Thank you 🙏
