Just a heads up this video has been uploaded for a few days and has been stuck on 1080, this has happened to the past few videos, the 4k version should be ready soon!
As far as I know, the two versions are optically identical, but the atx has more advanced coating that helps reduce flares, therefore has a slightly different color cast. The minor difference in sharpness all comes down to sample variance, I would say.
I've had the version 2 of this lens for a few years now, (Nikon mount version) and have been using it with a "dumb" adapter on my GH4 and GH5, but now, that I've got the Komodo, I decided to get the new Tokina 11-20mm 2.8 (which didn't yet exist when I originally purchased my 11-16). To be clear, I got the version that looks just like the new 11-16, not the Cinema version. I'm very happy with that purchase, and am using it on both my Komodo and my GH5 with a Speedbooster. I highly recommend it!
That’s awesome to hear Yuval! The only reason I didn’t go for the 11-20 was because it overlapped with my sigma 18-35 and from what I understand the 11-16 is lighter for gimbal work
@@ReachFilms not really. They seem to me to be almost identical in size and weight (non-scientific statement). The 11-20 also overlaps for me with the 24-70, when the latter is on the Canon Speedbooster, but the Tokina has a different look and very low distortion in comparison to other wide angle lenses.
@@tariqueorderson9808 it depends on the adapter you use. With the Metabones Ultra x0.71 the 11mm turns to 7.8mm, which is a hair wider than 8mm, and also effectively turns the F2.8 lens to an F2.0 lens.
Thanks for such a detailed review. I'm looking to do some Milky way photography with a Nikon D7500 but am confused whether to buy a Tokina 11-16 f2.8 or a Tokina 11-20 f2.8. I've read some pretty good reviews about the 11-16 but also that it gives a hard time to focus at infinity, which I believe is essential to photograph the milky way. Kindly advise which lens should I go with?
@@ReachFilms No worries at all. I'll look up in Google to get an idea. Problem is there are too many people giving absolutely contradicting statements, which makes it really confusing.
Hi, I am still confused, and hope you can help to clarify: I want to get a used 11-16 to go along with my Sigma 18-35 on my BMPCC 4K and G85 with Speedbooster. As i don't have much money, i was planning to get the old V1 as it costs under 200€ compared to 300€ for V2. Is there any other difference between the V1 and V2 besides coatings (autofocus, focus wheel, material)? The new V3 is 3 times as much money, and not reasonable for my budget. But why did you say you would recommend the V3 to Sigma 18-35 users? Thanks in advance! :)
Slightly better build on the new version, slightly different coating on the front element but similar optics, that’s are the differences but when it comes to performance haven’t tested
couple of questions i hoped you had addressed in your review. does the front element of the new version rotate? and if it has metal mount , in versus website they show that it has no metal mount and the front element rotate in contrast to the older version, since I'm not trusting that website much i want your help
Hey! So on the new version the mount is metal (do not have the old version anymore). Also the internals of the lens do not move so everything is contained inside the lens
@@ReachFilms In 2021 I sold my zcam and Sony a7iii for gh5 and a gh5s. Sold 1 cine lens to buy the Pro de version 1 and 2 primes. Best thing I have ever done. Paired well with my dji ronin s2
Well I have the 11-16 newest version and the old 11-20. Let me summ up a few things: - AF very unriable. This is not a back or front focus issue. AF is all over the place. - CA is 😩😩😩😩😩 - they rave about sharpness, well take a look at the edges and corners. One big mess at any f stop - the 11-16mm at 16mm and at f5.6 and above shows incorrect exposure - the 11-20mm at 20mm is unsharp Very disappointed as you may guess.
I think there are some shots where the focus points are different. Overall I'd say I see the new one sharper but has lost that creamy cinema looking and gain some purple fringing in exchange.

Yeah I’ve waited 3 days and no 4K but assuming the servers are bogged down

what bout lens flare comparison ????
What's the price of the old version ?? (When it was launched )
Thank you for all this info! Do you miss a stabilizer on this lens when using on Tha gimbal? Between canon 10-18 and the tokina 11-16 much dif?
Image quality on the Tokina is much better
Very nice. Did you tweak contrast in post and use filters when filming?
I don’t think so but I filmed this video quite a while ago
Hi! Thanks for the review! Do you know if both are compatible for Nikon? I have D5300. Thank you!
Great video. These are versions 1 and 3 correct? Would love to see a comparison between versions 1 and 2. Have you seen them compared?
I have not I only had the 1 and 3 versions

if you can find a good deal on the old one, it will make due, I found the actual housing of the lens was the biggest difference overall

More vignetting on old one
Between these two samples, new one looks sharper but also has stronger CA...
Man, the CA on these lenses are terrible!!
Totally agree
Chalk it up to age difference and fogging in the lens
