Good stuff. Regarding the issue of heavy displacement, long keeled boats from the previous video... I can share a quick story. I used to own one a boat like that. It was incredibly difficult to drive in reverse. Driving a Med charter boat in reverse is nothing to compare with it.
One year in Croatia, I see a single-handed sailor in a sistership of my old boat approaching the town wall. I'm thinking, "let's see how this captain handles reversing..." (not in a judgmental way, knowing full-well that I would not be able to do it very well myself, and also getting into position to help him with the shore lines). Even though he was a very experienced captain who had been single-handing for years, it wasn't a pretty approach on the Med-mooring. Like a good captain, he said he deliberately arrived along the town wall very early knowing his boat lacked the control to enter a tight spot single handed.
In short, I love your answer to the people asking "how do you do it in a heavy displacement boat with a full keel in a crosswind". You don't try to do it single-handed. You acknowledge the reality of the situation and find a suitable solution (pick up a mooring ball, anchor, arrive early, find a side tie, get help from the marina personnel...)
I have seen captains handle heavy displacement boats with great skill in tight quarters. It's not easy, and I suspect some of them have bow thrusters🙂

Thank you for sharing this with us, I really appreciate real sailors coming to the channel and give extra value that you cannot find else where

could you share what/how was difficult about it with practical examples? Im trying to weigh up the decision but dont have access to any to try out. My assumption is that it is just a matter or familiarity and that all long keel boats (or most that are tried and tested cruisers) will have a method that one just has to "find" for most conditions, and knowing when the conditions make it too risky.

A boat with a skeg hung rudder and longer keel will always be difficult to drive in reverse. The skeg-hung rudder is not as efficient as a "balanced" rudder with no skeg. The longer keel (even a long fin) will resist rotation of the boat. If there is wind, the bow will be constantly blowing down and the steerage in reverse will be inadequate to counteract it.
This literally happened to me this week with a friend who has been sailing the Med for 17 years. He is a great skipper who has med moored maybe 1000 times. With a wind onto the harbor wall situation, he was unable to motor in reverse--simply could not get the bow to hold into the wind (it would blow off before could build enough speed to gain control). He had to berth bow-to the wall, which made getting on and off the boat a challenge.
In short, if your program is to sail the Med, a long keel with a skeg-hung rudder will limit your mooring options whenever there is wind. Even without wind, backing into slips will be more difficult, no matter how much practice or experience you gain.
They just don't drive as well in reverse, no matter who is driving.

I like your view that people shouldn't have "too strong opinions " and should be flexible in different boating situations.
Of course, the English word "Dogma" has been learned from Greek!

I really like your videos! I have been sailing in Greece on my Center Cockpit yacht now for 3 years - mostly single handed. So yes, it can be done. But you are right: the key is preparation of your manoeuver. And - it cannot be done in all conditions. That’s where the old line from pilots comes into play: “A superior pilot uses his superior judgment to avoid situations which would require the use of his superior skills!” Certainly true for captains, too. And no, I do not consider myself a “superior captain” - absolutely not 😊

One other potential line in the water solution (though it does break your no multitasking rule): If you have enough space forward or speed for steerage, shift into neutral immediately once the end of the line is in the water and collect it before shifting back into forward.

You need to use what works for you the certain moment. I know how to do this with safety and I have already see so many accidents that happened because of the "no line in the water" obsession and no accident at all if you do this technique correctly

my opinion on the line in the water is use float line. then its very unlikely to get fouled. use it for my docking lines. then i also would like to see how you go about the handling of a heavy displacement full keel.

    • @epicnavigator
      @epicnavigator  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I very rarely use the floating line for docking because is very sensitive but I think is the best way to avoid fouling your prop during the single hand exits.

I have a boat that don?t follow your orders as your, mine is a fix keel, and don't have bow thruster, to me this would be almost imposible, the boat will be cross to the wind in a second.

Also, for the first time in my life i have "straighted " a multi braid line (stern, windward line) for a friend leaving single handed and upon leaving the dock it got tangled in the cleat.is there any preventive measure for this situation? I am also relying on this line in leaving the dock in strong winds. *the captain asked for the line "between the feet of the cleat" even though he was immediately exiting the dock
