  • I'm crying every time when I hear this song because I can really relate to Kenai's feelings :(
    Singer: Phil Collins
    Kenai: Joaquin Phoenix
    Koda: Jeremy Suarez
    Lyrics & Finnish translations:
    Everywhere I turn I hurt someone (Kaikkialle minne käännynkin satutan jotakuta)
    But there's nothing I can say to change (Mut ei ole mitään mitä voisin sanoa muuttaakseni)
    The things I've done (Asioita, jotka olen tehnyt)
    I'd do anything within my power (Tekisin mitä tahansa voimallani)
    I'd give everything I've got (Antaisin kaiken mitä olen saanut)
    But the path I seek is hidden from me now (Mutta polku jota etsin on nyt piilotettu minulta)
    Brother bear, I let you down (Karhuveljeni, petin sinut)
    You trusted me, believed in me (Sinä luotit minuun, uskoit minuun)
    And I let you down (Ja petin sinut)
    Of all the things I hid from you (Kaikista asioista, jotka piilotin sinulta)
    I cannot hide the shame (En voi piilottaa häpeää)
    And I pray someone (Ja rukoilen jotakuta)
    Something will come (Jokin tulee)
    To take away the pain (Viemään kivun pois)
    There's no way out of this dark place (Ei ole tietä pois tästä pimeästä paikasta)
    No hope, no future (Ei toivoa, ei tulevaisuutta)
    I know I can't be free (Tiedän etten voi olla vapaa)
    But I can't see another way (Mutta en näe muutakaan tietä)
    And I can't face another day (Ja en voi kohdata toista päivää)

      Mostly because after he turned into a bear, the characters began talking as though this tale were modern. Koda was insufferably annoying and they used a plot similar to the "liar-revealed plot." The beginning and end were astounding. The middle fell flat.

    • @ISetYourFaceOnFire
      @ISetYourFaceOnFire 6 ปีที่แล้ว +449

      The characters talking as though the tale were modern, what's wrong with that exactly? Koda being annoying, that's subjective. I found him to be more endearing than annoying. I really don't see how you found him to be so annoying where it reached the level of insufferable. Sure he was really talkative at the start, but that was part of his charm imo.
      And the liar revealed cliche, considering I was 9 when i saw this, I didn't know the bear kenai killed was koda's mother, until the reveal, so the liar revealed plot isn't exactly a negative imo. and even if you found out before the reveal, what is so wrong about that?
      and i see a lot of criticism saying the middle fell flat. debatable. it's not perfect but I can't think of much I'd change.
      I mean it doesn't need to be a grandiose, epic adventure, like other disney movies, because brother bear works as a more subtle character driven movie.
      and to be fair, when i re-watch lion king, the argument can be made that the middle in that movie is flat. and when i think of which middle i like more, I'd go with brother bear, over the lion king. so what would you change exactly, why do you feel it fell flat? I'm curious.

    I saw the original version of this where the story is heard rather than a song being heard over it. A lot of people say they wish they heard the story over the song. Personally, I like this version better because we know the story, we already know what happened. The emphasis is supposed to be on Koda’s reaction which is definitely heard and seen. The music and soundtracks are always more powerful than the words spoken. That’s why the directors and people who make the movies put them in there. The music is supposed to make you feel and react. Considering the Brother Bear movies are the only movies to make me cry to this day, I’d say they’ve done their job well

    Koda is such a good person. (Bear) he forgave and still loves the human who killed his mother. And in the second movie, he’s willing to give kenai up so that kenai can live with Nita as a human. How could anyone hate Koda? And he’s only a cub?? Saddest freaking thing ever

    • @michaelmyers7255
      @michaelmyers7255 3 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      But let’s be honest, the bear is sorta a reason why Sitka died. Although he was trying to save his brothers so he knew he might die when the ice berg fell. Kenai wanted revenge because of his brother. You can’t blame him for blaming the bear. He was in pain and angry his brother died. There are two sides to this story, if anything one can argue they both were in the wrong, the bear for stealing fish( yes I know she’s is just a bear and doing what her Instincts tell her to do, but then again her instincts should have told her there are people nearby and it’s people territory, maybe this wasn’t such a good idea. Kenai is not a monster and the bear is not a monster. Yes there are people who kill for no reason, those are monsters. Kenai had a justifiable reason to go after Koda’s mother. She was being greedy when she could have gone to the salmon run and she also was in their territory. What happened to bear instincts? And staying away from the two leggeds? On the other note, kenai should have tied up the fish properly, especially since he knew the bears could come and steal it. You can’t blame anyone really. The ceremony had started and he didn’t want to be late. There are so many gray areas. So many should have and could haves. I conclude that they both just were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

    • @michaelmyers7255
      @michaelmyers7255 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Pepperpawz well that’s your point of view. I suppose no one is right or wrong in that argument. It’s how you choose to look at it. Why did Koda’s Mother have to go in human territory? She could have gone to the salmon run keeping them out of danger but of course if that was the case it wouldn’t be a movie. OR, Kenai could have tied up the fish. Even if he did, that would not stop an animal from sniffing it out and destroying the setup. She would have torn it down herself. So are the humans to blame then? Or the bear? because if that fish was never discovered by a bear, Sitka would have been Alive. There are so many scenarios and ways to view it. If anything the animal should have not been treading in another animals territory. In the animal kingdom there are consequences when going in another animals territory. Period. I don’t care how civilized humans think they are, we are animals and are definitely not at the top of the food chain. I’m not arguing with you and telling you that you’re wrong, but I do believe there is no wrong or right way. This situation could have been prevented, or maybe not.

    So glad I was young enough not to have put this together before Kenai had his moment of realization. One of the best, most emotionally devastating revelations of any movie, animated or otherwise.
    Disney certainly isn't afraid to lean on the "Dead Parent(s)" trope, but killing a mom and older brother in the first act, then sticking the kid and his mom's killer together the rest of the movie?
    This scene still hits so hard....

    This makes us realize that animals can feel loss and pain. A mother elephant wails for her deceased baby, a baby elephant wails for their deceased mother; a killer whale pod support the parent that loses a baby, dolphins like to get playful when they’re happy, your dog gets concerned when they sense something is wrong with you etc

    • @ShadowNinetales
      @ShadowNinetales ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mean, it's Disney, they can make anything sapient and make a movie about it. But you are certainly right that in real life a wide variety of social species experience profound grief around loss, and abusive people who don't give a shit how animals feel are cancer. There's a documentary show about protecting dogs in South Korea, and one dog missed his owner so badly when he went away to college that the dog's body straight-up stopped digesting food and maintaining body fat due to the sheer stress, even though the dog was still willingly eating his food as normal. The dog liked the granny left in charge of him well enough, but he couldn't cope without his favourite human around, it was heartwrenching. Clearly, the capacity to love and deeply value a fellow creature can be both a blessing and a curse, depending on what happens.
      From what I've gathered, real bears are a LOT less social than the ones in the movie, with the exception of cubs and their mothers. Bear cubs have indifferent deadbeat dads who might randomly eat them if they get too close, but conversely they have fiercely devoted mothers who will maul the shit out of anything that threatens the babies or die trying, including the dad if he's causing trouble. 'It takes a village to raise a child' is not a proverb bears would relate to - they are tough-as-nails single mothers, surviving out in the wilderness with no support network in sight.
      Bears have very inflexible faces and are very hard to read emotionally - much moreso than a cat or dog - so it can be hard to tell if a bear has aggressive intentions until it ambles over and casually, silently starts eating you alive. It's not pleasant, but it's nature.
      My dad told me that, growing up in Canada, he and his friends used to play in bear-inhabited woods, and if a bear showed up they just kept really still and waited for it to go away, or backed away slowly in a submissive manner. It's not a bad way to deal with a bear encounter, but I still think they were nuts for hanging out there in the first place.

    • @ShadowNinetales
      @ShadowNinetales ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This movie definitely doesn't dick around when it comes to visceral plot elements (but still presented in a kid-suitable way). And, somewhat relevant, I think Mulan is the only Disney princess (if she counts as one, she's not an actual princess by title) that kills someone in her movie, let alone a whole-ass army in an epic avalanche, that kicked ass. And then she blows up their leader with a firework later after completely outwitting him. An absolute legend, my fave Disney woman for sure.
      Then you have movies like Tarzan or Beauty and the Beast that pussyfooted around having the good guys be the ones to kill the psychotic villain, oh no can't let them get their hands dirty, gotta have a conveniently-placed vine or a long fall do it instead. I mean, it's good that the bad guys don't just get away with it, but the beast 100% would have had the right to shred Gaston for ignoring his attempts to make peace and stabbing him in the goddamn back. You could still cut away to avoid showing gore while making it clear what happened, like when the hyenas ate Scar at the end of the Lion King.
      Simba didn't get to kill Scar, but at least he was kicking his ass with lethal potential by the end. Although, "No Scar, I'm not like you. Run away and never return." was definitely some moral high-horse bullshit prior to that fight, considering how unambiguously justified he WOULD have been in killing Scar at that point. Sure the lions don't have a prison facility to throw him into, but there's a reason the punishment for fratricide in real life isn't just "Piss off to another country and don't come back". A lone male lion banished from a pride can easily starve to death slowly and painfully fending for himself in the wild, but that's clearly not the vibe Simba was going for here. It's especially hilarious how a carnivorous animal who regularly eats his subjects is trying to feel superior over refusing to kill an actually villainous animal.
      Ah well. I do still enjoy watching my childhood favourites, even if the gaping plot holes and goofy dialogue choices stick out way more as an adult lol.

    S**t, watching this as an adult hit like a brick. When I was younger, I couldn't put my finger on why the death of that bear was such a big shock to Koda and how it connected to his mom not coming. It took me all this time to put the pieces together, and...DAMN.

    So, I see a lot of debate over whether Disney should’ve kept this version of the scene or if they should’ve kept the version where we hear what Kenai tells Koda. Arguments happen over how vague one version is and how not vague the other is. And after seeing both, personally, I think this version is much better _because_ it’s so vague. Because how do you tell a little cub, or child who thinks of you as their friend/brother that you’re _directly_ responsible for their mother’s death? And how do you tell them that their mother is dead because you wanted revenge for a death that _wasn’t_ directly the mother’s fault? It’s a conversation that most wouldn’t have words for. It leaves you to come up with your own version of the story that accurately tells not only Koda’s mother’s death, but that Kenai is truly more remorseful then he’s ever been. I mean, that’s gotta be an absolutely heart-wrenching explanation. And I feel that the explanation that’s canonically given, doesn’t express or deliver this _enough_

    This scene hurts a lot. Just imagine it, your own friend, the person who saved your life from a Hunter, played around with, and called you a brother turns out to be the very person who killed your mother. This movie plays around with your feelings

    I love the part with Kenai swiping the bear print away it's a great way of saying that he hates what he did, hates that he destroyed a child life just because of his ignorance and thinking only about himself and not caring at all about the consequences of his actions,but what this scene shows the most of all is that Kenai hates what he has become. And the Fact that he fixes this by becoming Koda's brother and caretaker shows how much Kenai grows as a person. Brother Bear is hands down one of the best Disney films of all time.

    "Everywhere I turn I hurt someone. But there's nothing I can say to change the things I've done. I do anything within my power, I give everything I've got. But the path I seek is hidden from me now. Brother Bear, I let you down. You trusted me, believed in me, and I let you down. Of all the things I hid from you, I cannot hide the shame. And I pray someone, something will come to take away the pain."
    This song was perfect for this moment, and the power of its words say it all. We all know what happened and what Kenai did, and we don't have to have the whole plot of the movie spoken back to us. The real emotional moment was in Koda's reaction to learning his mother was gone, and Kenai was responsible. I cried the first time I saw this moment, and I get chills every time I hear this music, because its just so beautiful and sad all at the same time. Well done Phill Collins for helping shape my childhood and making this film so impactful.

    This is one of the most emotional and saddest scenes I have ever seen. This left me a great impact in my heart and made me cry so much. And the song itself must be saddest and most dramatic of all the Disney movies. I can’t believe people simply forgot about this and Disney just let it die in darkness. But it will still live through are memories forever and ever.
