    The theme in this movie is so strong considering it's a Disney movie. The major twist near the end having Koda's mom be the bear Kenai killed at the beginning made it very dark and as a kid I just didn't realize this. I still love this movie, but now I love it even more.

      I wonder what the adults watching the movie were thinking at that time. I reckon most of them would just think "Oh it's just a Disney movie." If I had been an adult during the time I watched the movie for the first time I feel as though my emotions would've been much stronger. I'm kind of a sucker for these kind of moments, haha.

    Not gonna lie fellas, the scene where Kenai shapes his pawprint into a handprint gets me every time.
    It's almost as if he's acknowledging to the spirits and to himself that he is the monster, not bears.
    Koda described man as being monsters, while Kenai described bears as monsters. Koda is familiar with bears and trusts them, and we see Kenai acknowledging this by turning a bear paw, a symbol of the creatures that Koda trusts, into a handprint, a symbol of the monsters that took his mother away from him.

    I love both versions of this scene. They both have their merits. I LOVE hearing the characters talk about their struggles and feelings. And it's really gripping how Kenai's voice breaks a few times. He's hurting so bad and he hates himself. Beautiful. But the final version is just as gripping to me. People say it's cheesy. But I've always taken that scene seriously. The song is beautiful and powerful and it definitely tells us what we need to know about how Kenai is feeling. Which is just as good as him telling Koda and the audience. And the way the music builds and builds until Koda runs away heartbroken. That has always made me cry. You can feel the little guy's pain. You can feel it in this one too of course. But the movie version is most definitely worthy of praise.

  • @iBolt07
    @iBolt07 8 ปีที่แล้ว +294

    Much prefer this version. Bigger impact. I get the feeling Disney made the call to water it down because it was out of place from the mood of the rest of the movie. The rest of the movie takes a very lighthearted tone despite the deep conflicts.

    • @Wolfenstin1806

      I don't personally see it as that out of place. When Sitka died in the first act, there was no sugar coating it. He was dead, and it was made clear, and the moment was sad and mournful.
      It seems an odd choice to tone it down when it felt like the film wasen't above delving into the reality of things.
      That said, I feel like the film could definitely have benefited from this scene over the original cut.

  • @GingerWizzard1994
    @GingerWizzard1994 9 ปีที่แล้ว +426

    I like the Phil Collins song, but this is what they should have done. This is absolutely heart-breaking. Pheoenix's acting is on point; you can just feel Kenai's torment. That one bit where Koda says "like a brother!" and hugs him, and the pained look on Kenai's face, and how he just spits out his confession and you can sense his remorse oh WHY DISNEY. This could have been a Lion King moment, like when Kenai finds out the truth himself, but you added ALL THE CHEESE.
    I love Brother Bear, I personally find it very underrated and it's one of my favourite Disney movies - heck, one of my favourite animated films! It may not be as strong as BatB or TLK, it is flawed in parts, but it's so beautiful and funny, with gorgeous animation and a lovely message. However, they should have kept this scene Phil free!

      I am in total agreement. just to add one more scene i think which could have elevated the film into greatness. i think there should have been an actual scene in the film where koda forgives kenai.
      except it's never addressed again the fact that kenai killed koda's mother. koda just kind of forgets about it, and after hearing rutt and tuke make up which is played more for comic relief, koda just goes to find kenai like all is well and forgotten.
      i feel there should have been a serious, emotional scene between the two where koda forgives kenai, it would have made for a really powerful scene with the two embracing, or however you'd want to do it. but something along those lines, would have really cemented koda and kenai's brotherhood.

That can be left to our own imaginations, possibly making it even more emotional. Besides, I think the song by Phil Collins does a great job of capturing the emotion of the scene.

    Going to have to go with being in the minority here but I honestly liked the released movie's version of this better. It just feels to me that there really was no dialogue that could truly encompass and relay all of what was going on within Kenai or Koda during this. Instead the music was there to capture the emotion while the animation captured the physical impact. Both of those did a far better job of getting the emotional depth of this scene to me then the dialogue here did. I have had lots of moments and feelings that just have no words for them and the film version of this scene made me really feel that.

    I actually feel like the version they went with in the final movie was more emotional and more powerful. Kind of like a "less is more" thing. Where we can only imagine how hard it must be for Kenai to explain what happened, and the song comes on to emphasize what he's feeling instead of what he's saying. I feel like if it were left a mystery what Kenai said, it emphasizes how hard it was because maybe it's like he doesn't even know what he's saying.
    But thanks for the upload, it's interesting.

  • @thechilzer7803

    I feel like I'm the only one who likes the cut that made it into the movie more than this one. In this version of the story, the audience already knows the story being told, because we saw it play out in its entirety, not to mention Koda's retelling with Kenai's flashbacks thrown in the scene before. Telling the whole thing again would just be boring, because the scene before literally did just that. The movie cut, meanwhile, takes the emphasis off of the words, instead placing it on the emotions of the characters to tell the story, with the key lines put in to both tell its own self contained story, and give those lines in particular more emphasis. And while the Phil Collins can get annoying sometimes, I personally think it fits really well in this scene. Even so, if you cut out the Phil Collins and put in another piece, then the movie cut would, in my opinion, be better suited to the narrative of the movie, as well as being a good self contained story. And what that means is, if you had this cut outside of the movie, it would sound really exposition-y, whereas with the movie cut, you could take it out of the film and still feel the power of the scene, because even without knowing exactly what happened, the animation, word choice, and expression in the characters faces can suck you in to the drama, and even give you a general sense of what happened.

      disney's call probably, not the director's, but too emotional? considering sitka's death at the start of the film, I think it would have been adequately emotional for the audience. it needed to be really emotional because what has been told, is a major plot point, and to make when koda reunites with kenai later on, more impactful. it's just done much better here. it's so raw, and powerful, without the phil collins song playing over the dialogue, and the extra scenes added in.

  • @giaisnotawkward2579

      @@RYMAN1321 The song fucks it up by EXPLAINING his feelings, the final version just guides kids through the emotions rather than letting them feel them. A great movie acknowledges that kids aren't dummies, but this film doesn't, and it really suffers for it. This scene works better with words because they imply the feelings, as opposed to the other way around where they state the feelings and imply the words.

    I wish this had been the version in the movie - I know that there's the whole "less is more" thing and I love both versions, but in this one we get to actually hear what Kenai's saying (which I wondered before), and we still get to hear the song, just a bit later in the scene. I hope that they at least release a special extended version of this with this fully animated, like what they did for Beauty and the Beast.

    Wow this scene is so, so, SO much better without music; I had no idea it'd be this emotional and moving.
    I love Phil Collins, but the song being put over Kenai's confession was a very bad choice. Even when he's chasing after Koda in the wind apologising to him, I feel like it's unecessary, and that it'd be more powerful without it.
    It's a great song, but it doesn't fit anywhere, and it'd should've been cut.
    Scene with music 6/10, scene without music 11/10.
    Bad move Disney, you fucked up.

When he tells Koda the truth about his mother's fate, Kenai realizes that it was not the bear who was the monster...his lust for revenge made Kenai the monster when he killed Koda's mother to avenge Sitka's death.

  • @animefan77

    For all the lack of appreciation it gets, it does one thing infinitely better than Lion King. Simba ran away in exile for years due to believing he did murder his own father and came back to fix his mistakes and learn from them. Except not only does the reminder of the past nearly kill him, but also it was all a lie from his uncle who actually did the deed. So Simba had issues that he was never actually responsible for and the murderer was portrayed as a monster for doing so on top of his irresponsible rule that somehow caused the pride lands to become a gray wasteland. And Simba’s eventual fight for justice and karma dealing Scar a well deserved death was portrayed as positive as possible.
    Kenai did kill the bear who caused his brother’s death, but not only was this action what caused his transformation into a bear, but that bear was the mother of his adoptive younger brother.
    Kenai actually did murder someone unnecessarily and he has to live with the fact that he orphaned his younger brother. He actually has reasons to feel guilt and has to face the consequences of his actions to learn to be a better person from it for the rest of his life. There’s no justice in how revenge is portrayed, being a negative action that causes more harm than good. It’s surprisingly very mature.
