Poor areas tend to have older technology, movies, etc. I had some friends who still played sega genesis/snes back when game cubes and ps2 were big. When I came to arizona to visit from illinios back in the early 90's before moving here, the toy aisle was considerably different. If you grow up with younger/older siblings, it can make a difference too, or how old your parents are...things like that.

Another shout-out to the entirety of the staff and crew of Late Night With Seth Meyers: this was adorable! Another funny segment which wasn't sardonic; a lost art in recent years. I think this is, actually, quite wholesome. For a late-night comedy bit, this was so completely lighthearted and fun, at the expense of no one, that I was left feeling genuinely uplifted.
Thanks again Seth and your whole team; you "knocked it outta tha pahk" again ;)
Please keep running with this type of stuff; it helps counteract the buildup of the last couple of years where Gary Jules' infamous song "Mad World" on a loop was the ongoing soundtrack for daily living.

They can't expose themselves--they don't even know what they're looking for! And parents are too busy parenting (although the onus IS on us, also). Aunts and uncles, I call on you
@Jess Hanks That's so cool that you have niblings and about your aunt influencing you! I feel like I've exposed my kids to a LOT of great music and other media, but some things have fallen through the cracks, and my brother and sister have helped. 8 is a great age to enrich their minds because when they're teens they might be less open to your influence, but you'll have already shaped their taste toward quality. At some point they might start exposing YOU to good music THEY find!
If I were an aunt I think I'd buy my niblings a CD player when they're young and everytime they have a birthday or Christmas get them a new album and maybe a t-shirt or something. Help prevent them from becoming those kids who wear band t-shirts they know nothing about. (I know CDs are old school but I think it'd be fun.)
I've really been thinking about what you said about kids needing to expose themselves to art, music, etc. I'm just starting to send my kids out into the world and instead of feeling guilty about the things I DIDN'T share with them, I'm going to teach them that it is ON THEM and on all of us, like you said. So thanks for that! :-)

@gothatway09 I was born in 1998 and to be honest the Nirvana album cover was the only reference I got. I guess because there's so much information accessible now and things become famous so fast and stop being popular so fast now due to the amount of pop culture accessible, people care less and remember less.
@gothatway09 I agree, these were more obscure samples and she seemed more clueless than the normal border millennial/Gen Z would be. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable about the 70s, 80s, and 90s just from my parents music and films and through school. I even took a US pop culture module in history at university. I just didn't recognise most of these, probably doesn't help that I'm not American.
I'm 22 and was shocked that she didn't know the Nirvana one, that picture is timeless.

My parents literally have *that* phone+fax machine. (Plus a newer set of cordless handsets they actually use.) It was the main family telephone + answering machine since my teen years. I'm 40 now and they still have it.

someone born in 1995 is not gen z. they were born in the generation before the new millennium = millennial
I'm 28 and knew all of them. I think late millennials would have a harder time with the earlier stuff... I'm right down the middle, kid in the 90s and teen in 2000s
28 and I didn't know any of it..
I knew some of them even though i didn't grow up in America so my popculture knowledge is full of holes. But as a 2000's baby im proud of the amount i know.

Maybe because I am in between Karen and Seth in terms of age (just turned 35), but the only things I immediately recognized were the fax machine and the nirvana cover... Joey Lawrence and Milli Vanilli looked slightly familiar, but I wasn't terribly confident on their names. Definitely did not know any of Karen's millennial references (and technically I am an elder millennial). So funny how generations are getting smaller and smaller in terms of age range.

@dhsilv2 I feel like not enough people are recognizing how huge a disruption in media consumption habits internet streaming, and digital media in general, was. I'm old enough to have owned hundreds of CDs and DVDs in my early twenties and then completely change the way I listen to music and watch shows and movies when digital media (and reliable internet connections) became widespread. I said it somewhere else in this videos comment section but I doubt kids are spending hours staring at the thumbnails that come with the songs they are streaming in the way we used to stare at album covers while listening to records, tapes, or CDs. Not recognizing an album cover is completely understandable if you've only listened to digital music most of your life.

I immediately thought of tamagotchi. I had such a love hate relationship with those. Feed it before school and it's dead by the time you get out of class.
I’m about to turn 40 and I had a tamagotchi in school.....they were too before her time.
The elephant in the room is that she doesnt know who these people are because she was too busy studying. I'm surprised no one mentioned that she wouldnt be knowledgeable of popular culture references from when she was either not alive or young and probably not allowed to watch much TV. After all she had math, science, piano, and other academics to worry about. The sad thing is that shes now a writer and needs to know various pop culture references. I'm sure she has to Google alot in order to understand her peers. Moral of the story is children need to grow up well rounded. She clearly didn't. Her lack of social intelligence has nothing to do with her being a Millennial.

Millennials technically include everyone born from 1982 till 1998 so there's a huge cultural difference between older and younger millennials.

There just isn't a real definition for it yet. Also generation doesn't say much about a person. Some people aren't involved in pop culture. But know everything tech related of previous generations.

She is just barely, depending on her birthday. Most say the cut off for millennials is 95, so she’s at the tail end of the generation. But, I’m a millennial too and I’m 38 at the start of the generation, so it’s broad.
Right. I get so annoyed. Millennials are aged 38/39-23/24 (depending on the source), but the most common depiction of a millennial is always some early 20-something.
