- I play a lot of video games, but rarely do I finish one. This has been the case ever since I first started playing video games. Let's talk about...why?

What's the latest game you've finished? And how are you with finishing games overall?
Pokemon Gold,With Level 40-50 pokemon in my team
I finished Rise of the Tomb Raider last week. Not bad, given that I only started it in November 2021.
I've finished 7 games this year, very good for me, but 4 of those were very short (< 6 hours).
I've started dozens of games of Minecraft, but never got anywhere near The End. Once I get established, I get bored.
As long as you're having fun there's no wrong way to play. Personally I feel compelled to at least try to finish every game I play (although not the crazy 100%) but if I stop having fun I will definitely drop it.
One example for me was Sekiro, I was loving the mechanics and the world, but I suck at souls-like games, so I got to a boss, some guy in some tower who turned into lightning, and after dying non-stop for over 2 hours and becoming really angry and frustrated I just decided to walk away. I definitely wish that game had an easy mode so I could keep enjoying that world!
100% agree there. Finishing every game you play is something I respect haha. I don't think I could ever😂
I understand the struggle with sekiro. I played about 60 hours of Elden Ring, the last 5-7 hours on one boss that I just can't beat. So I eventually quit as well. It's tough, and some player like it that way!
Happened to me so what i did was i had to use like a trainer KEKW to have infinite health and just get over with the boss
Thank you for this. I've beaten a handful of games, my 2 favorites being cyberpunk and bloodborne. I feel terrible when i get a game and just lose interest after a few hours and move on to something else. Glad to know it's not just me.
I feel the same way about games. It feels bad to not finish games especially ones that you really like, but the point of games is to have fun playing them and when they stop being fun, it feels like a waste to keep playing them. Once I wrote down all the games I am in the middle of, like ones I play from time to time, and there were 20+ games on the list. One of them is perhaps my favorite game in a long time and I stopped on the final boss because it got too frustrating. Its frustrating because I can't say "I beat it" truthfully.
100% agree with this. While that may be frustrating, I hope you still get to fully enjoy the new games you play
I came here looking for some psychological explanation why I can't finish games and if there was something wrong with me but you genuinely made me remember how these games should be entertaining and that if I'm having fun that's all that really matters, great video man
I'm glad you liked it! Thanks for watching 😁
discipline needed. finishing games can be so amazing, creating good memories. instead of jumping on the next thing because of fomo.
Dude same. I literally googled "why can't I finish games" lol. Only ones I'm super absorbed by like mainline FF games, metroid, or castlevania games. Even some games I'm so excited to play i just slowly lose interest in and then I feel fake for it. I stopped feeling so bad though. There's a reason and maybe it's just a change in what we enjoy and that's okay.
Me, 13 hours into playing a game for the first time: This is so fun!!! i have to sleep i will play this tomorrow.
tomorrow me: Mmm... Later.
me in 10 years: ... Later.
Exactly this. It seems I just like to find out the basic mechanics and idea of a game and then it isnt interesting anymore.
Black myth wukong is the only recent game i played for longer, but still. Beat the final boss and started the fight for the true ending. After the first try I had to go to sleep. 2 weeks past, havent touched it since but started another 3 games, also not finishing them.
I’ve never found a video that made me self reflect this much. You have opened my eyes my friend and I’m thankful ❤
Honestly being able to just buy games digitally is the reason i cant finished.. its just so many good games to play
I definitely feel this. It's so easy to buy games that it causes shiny object syndrome haha
I am a huge fan of restarting. I appreciate the assurances that it can really be as simple as enjoying that part of the game. I'm having fun 😊 Stardew Valley is my main game!
I'm terrible at finishing games. I can only think of two that I've actually completed: Devil May Cry (the original) and Final Fantasy 10-2. DMC was kind of a fluke though, the PS2 was new for me (for Christmas) and my dad didn't know I'd need a memory card. My mom had passed away very recently, and finding I couldn't save the game I just...um...played it for 13hrs straight until I beat it?
I'm more of a casual gamer but my ratio is pretty low for the number of games I've played, it kinda makes me mad lol especially since I usually get REALLY close to the end and don't finish. So dumb.
I recognise that feeling of getting close and then just not finishing it. I've done it with Bioshock 1 and Brutal Legend for example. Such a waste
My library cycle usually comprises of Bioshock 1/Infinite, Gran Turismos 1-3, Fallout3/NV, GTA IV, and Mechwarrior. While the stories, sans GT, are obviously compelling and some of the most celebrated in gaming, I tend to solely gravitate towards a fun gameplay loop and the 'struggle' of the first half of a game. The late-game stage in 95% of games is pretty dull and monotonous imo, and while I have beaten most of these titles at least once, rarely ever do I even get near the end of a campaign nowadays.
Buut I also have just as much trouble beginning and completing tasks outside of gaming, so it may be the only way I know how to still enjoy it at 28.
Fantastic Video, you deserve more views and likes, the algorithm did you dirty
Thanks! I'm actually surprised to see this video suddenly gaining a lot of views haha
Happy to hear you liked it!
Lol same, especially the games I had as a kid on my game boy. I distinctly remember trying to sit down and finish some but I think I only ever managed Super Mario Advanced.
Now days I play more games that don't have endings so who knows when I'll get a chance to finish others. I am trying not to buy new steam games until I know I'll be able to play them.
Great video Shelf!
Thank you!
I definitely feel that. Not buying a game unless you know you will be able to play them. I still buy them sometimes, but far less than I used to.
Quality over quantity. 100 games doesn't equal more fun. That's why people don't finish.
The Xbox and Playstation marketplace is filled with 100s of games, but there are only 10 or less games worth the time to complete.
You don't have to complete a game as long as you're having fun, but make sure you're getting your money's worth and at least try.
188AAA games on my steam lobrary only 3 finshed
This was helpful ty
Idk why but I just can’t finish Elden ring. I love the game so far and everything it does in impeccable but I just can’t find myself being able to finish it. Witcher 3 is also a victim of this and so was cyberpunk until I beat it on my 4th time trying to beat it. I hate this 😂
It's gotta be a length thing. All those games take forever to finish (i think 20-30 hours is a lot)
But nice job on finishing cyberpunk!
1:26 which game is that?
Ghostwire Tokyo 😁
why aren't these vids not on theshelfman?
TheShelfman is about making games with a focus on comedy! And on here I wanna speak my mind on subjects related to games rather than anything related to making games😁
