  • United away here at Upton Park against West Ham United on the 16th January, 1971. Revie's side won the game 3-2 in front of 34,396 fans. Goals from Johnny Giles, Norman Hunter and Rod Belfitt brought the points back Up North for The Whites. Watch out for the Hunter thunderbolt, the kids on the park and the Jackie Charlton post match interview.

I’m a Leeds fan but in those days all teams played great football good old days . Loved old grounds

Great finish by Rod Belfitt here, doing precisely what a good striker should be doing, and moving in for the ball at the moment Lorimer shoots in anticipation of it being spilled by the keeper. Along with men like Mick Bates, Terry Hibbitt and Terry Yorath he was one of the understudies of that great Leeds side who rarely gets mentioned in the same breath as the Reaneys, Bremners, Hunters etc, but could always be relied upon when needed, as he shows here.

Regardless who you support there's some great players out there on both teams with household names like many teams in the 60s & 70s.

Upton Park , in the 60's-90's was a great compact ground , great atmosphere , especially under the floodlights . I use to love going there .

I loved going to Upton Park in the late 70s and early 80s. A great time with so many legends playing.

Never a bad match with a goal mouth practically in the stand. Really tight ground & Liverpool played great games there. All these grounds, Highbury, Upton Park, White Hart Lane bulldozed, Maine Rd & more. Old Trafford & Liverpool were tempted but stayed put sensibly.

In my boyhood, I saw 'Uncle Norm' score a couple of 'screamers ' for Bristol City in his dotage. What a player. Still the best I've seen at Ashton Gate in 40 years!

When a goal is scored only Brian Moore gets excited like no one else can. Big Jack tells it as it is & should have managed Leeds when Don Revie left but no one asked him. Odd.

I think that Eustace's disallowed goal was ruled out for a push on Charlton. The referee was in a good position but to me it looked a harsh decision. Notice how Charlton and Sprake had already harangued the ref for awarding a corner, and how that compared with West Ham's simple acceptance of the disallowed goal. Leeds intimidated rivals and refs alike at that time.

I wonder if Sprake bollocked Charlton for the mistake Jack made for WHU's first goal ? Gave Eustace a free header. Quick to blame others eh, Mr Charlton ?

Charlton made a crucial howler (as did Hunter) v West Brom in the infamous no offside match that cost Leeds the 71 title, whereas Sprake played well.

The old goalposts were the best. Especially at Upton park. Now we are stuck with the tied back nets and no stanchions that have no class whatsoever. Oh for the old Wembley style nets and metal stanchions..

The comment at the start about the absence of mainstays like Greaves and Moore was mass suspensions after most of the team got well oiled at a Blackpool night club before an FA Cup game

It's all Hagen Daas West Aaaam naaaaaa... 45 years later, Bonds (??????? ) in his Daimler Sovereign pauses to watch beach volleyball in front of the sand castles and have a... or perhaps a Ben 'n' Jerries with a Fluffie Luvvie Flake and a Luft wafer.

West Ham had 3 world cup winners but did sod all for years after 66. The press tried to depict them as the footballing aesthetes bullied by the physical likes of Leeds and Liverpool. The truth was they saw themselves as self-styled football aristocrats - as Eamonn Dunphy skewered the once - but lacked the willingness to graft and sweat for results.

arse bandit Wrong , Bobby Moore said that they wanted a hard core centre half like Maurice Setters to give them a bit of ommph but Greenwood , who was a great coach and football think but unfortunately not a great motivator , wouldn't have it as he wanted it all fair and square .
