  • In this video, we show you how to sample an Apple iPhone on the Teenage Engineering OP-Z Portable Synthesizer. With the addition of sampling on the OP-Z, a convenient way to sample audio clips is from an iPhone, since there is a high chance you may already have one in your pocket. We walk you through how to sample from an iPhone and share other helpful information. We also talk about the Apple Camera Adapter that is used to sample from an iPhone.
    Note: An iPhone 8 Plus was used in this video, but you should be able to use any iPhone or iPad with a Lightning connector.

    Why is the emphasis on the word brand? And which adapter do I need - lighting on USB or lighting on USB 3.0 ??? I do not have branded lighting for USB. Everything works, but there is some oddity - as soon as I connect the adapter to iPhon or iPad, OP-Z starts to work slowly, I can’t, for example, play the eighth notes or sixteenth notes with my hands on the keyboard. Those. the keys are pressed, there is no delay, but there is a long interval between presses. What could be the matter - a generic adapter or the fact that this adapter is not USB 3.0?

    • @OllieLoops

      @@musicalstatues73 Ok. thanks for clarifying. I believe you can do this if you have a third app to route audio from the soft synth to the OPZ. I believe an app like Audiobus will allow you to do this. But I would recommend checking out that app. Just know that the OPZ app doesn't route or handle audio itself and the OPZ essentially acts as an audio interface for the iPhone given the adaptor in the video. ok, I hope that helps.

    Hello,
    Tried for days now, really struggling to use my Samsung S8 to output audio to the OPZ in sample mode. Been to Samsung shop, I have my audio output settings on my phone to OPZ via Samsung Smart Things, have USB configuration in Developer Settings to output Audio via USB and sound doesnt leave phone via the speaker or the headphone port when settings are like this, so audio is leaving phone via the usb c port but OPZ does not seem to think that is the default audio input, it still only listens via built in mic or earphones mic when engaged.
    Thoughts? Has anyone else successfully used sample mode direct from Samsung S8 into OPZ? My girlfriends Android phone, Huawei P30 works instantly, no settings changed, just the same usb c to usb c and straight away I can sample digital audio into the OPZ, I just need to do the same on my Samsung S8.
    Do I need a USB OTG cable? Or a seperate app that reroutes the audio leaving my phone or tells the OPZ it is slave to listen not my phone listen to audio FROM OPZ via USB (I dont know if it is doing this however). I am on latest firmware on both OPZ and phone.
    Help needed pls
    Thanks

    Hi, great video. I have 2 questions hopefully someone can help.
    Can anyone CONFIRM my Samsung S8 will simply connect and let me sample sounds out from it via the charging output (and if so how do I do this, do I need to change a setting so sound leaves via the usb output of the phone not the speaker/headphones? And how do I do this?)
    And secondly, I do have both IPAD and Iphone but both are the older type with 30 pin connector, will a converter which makes the output of my iphone/iPad into the host work for sampling from that?
    I want to use my Samsung phone ideally, but can find any other videos or info online other than your short bit at the end of this that event talks about it as a sampling from device. Can anyone point me to more information regarding sampling the sounds out from a Samsung phone INTO the OPZ
    Thanks in advance!

    • @OllieLoops
      @OllieLoops  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Myles,
      I have not tried it, but users have confirmed that Android phones work simply by connecting a cable between the phone and OP-Z. If you get a usbc to usbc cable, you can connect the two. The phone should auto detect the connection and output audio.
      Regarding iPhones and iPads with 30 pin connectors, there is a camera connection kit that you can get for that type of connector. And it should work in the same way as the newer iPhones.
      I hope that helps.

      @@OllieLoops Okay, 2 more questions if you dont mind?
      Firstly as I dont actually own the OPZ, this is for sure something I will be ordering very soon, I dont have the device in front of me so cant see... so the mic input you've used in other videos using your Shure Lapel style condensor mic, am I wrong in saying you couldnt just use a TRS mini jack out of that output and put it absolutely anywhere to sample; it doesnt just HAVE to be a microphone, right? So I could sample like directly from my record player, or radio or absolutely anything with a headphones-out jack?? - Is the microphone input on the same output as the headphone output of the OPZ i.e if I could use that 1 dedicated audio input (which I thought comes from the same line as the headphones out of the OPZ) to say sample the record player would that mean I couldn't have headphones in at the same time to the OPZ and would that mean I couldn't monitor the sample, or do I need a separate device to do this/would the usbc output work for audio to monitor if I had headphones that had some kind of usbc adapter on that? Essentially can the "headphones mic - in" on the OPZ be used as not mic but just line in TRS lead and if so how do I monitor audio from the OPZ at the same time?
      Secondly, I was thinking about ordering the PO KO! and then PO rhythm (drum machine one) also, but would you say with the OPZ now with Sampling there is nothing essentially I couldnt get from them that I couldnt do with the OPZ with sampling??
      As I could essentially just download the PO Rhythm drum sounds and sample them into the OPZ, save them in the internal memory then I would pretty much have the PO Rhythm. Would you say also I can splice samples, sequence samples from any format whether microphone input whatever to create patterns to the effect of what the PO KO! (the speak/micro sampler one) can do?
      Sorry for the long questions. Anyone else feel free to answer these in time!
      Greetings from Manchester UK (but currently sun bathing in Turkey!)

    • @OllieLoops
      @OllieLoops  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Myles,
      Regarding the 1/8 jack on the OPZ, there are mixed opinions about it. We don't want to stir the pot, but here's where we stand. On a technical level, the input is a mic level input, which is excepting to see a signal between -60dbv and -40dbv. A typical line level input is between -10dbv and +4dbv. So running a line level signal into a mic level input is well above what the device is designed to handle. TE issued a warning that this can damage the device. With that, we don't encourage people run line level signal into the device because we don't want anyone to break their gear based on our recommendations. We haven't found a good solution for this and we encourage users to ask TE what they recommend. Lastly, if TE releases a module that gives users a line level input, that would be the best solution. Until then, you could record into another device and transfer samples into the OPZ via Disk Mode. It's not convenient, but it's a solution.
      Regarding the POs, I don't think you would be gaining much by having both an OPZ and a PO33. One thing that the PO33 does that the OPZ does not, is process incoming samples in a low fi way. The OPZ has much better A to D converters than the PO33 so it sounds better. If you want that low fi sound, then the PO33 is a fun device to have. Otherwise, the OPZ is effectively a PO on steroids, so you are better off with the OPZ.
      I hope that helps. Enjoy Turkey.
