    Wish I'd just stuck with my G.I. set-up & added a Sawyer filter. I've got so many choices I think I talk myself out of going camping from the sheer exhaustion of trying to decide what to take & digging down to it. The G.I. cup, lid & stove is pretty hard to beat for keeping things simple.

    Old school is hard to beat, But I'm finding myself grabbing my Grayl with mil bag more now, I use the Pathfinder bag with cup, lid and stove, it has good size pocket on the front and molly all around it. This has become my go to .. it all fits with room for more. Keep doing these comparison videos and showing other ways to enjoy the outdoors. Your a great teacher for the outdoors

    If only Grayl would come up with a water filter unit that is shaped like an Army canteen, that would be great!

    Since I rarely find myself in need of filtering water I'll be sticking with my Oasis and Boundless voyage cookset in a Helikon Tex E&E pouch. Your videos never cease to impart knowledge Blackie! Bill Doyle

    Good video Blackie. Like someone else mentioned old school is hard to beat. One con that wasn't mentioned and this goes for any and all filtration systems is in cold weather if your filter freezes it's game over that filter is done and then your back to boiling and or water tabs and then you add in the price of a new filter and that turns into a huge con.

    Good job in highlighting the pros and cons between the two. The ability of the Grayl to purify water faster is a huge benefit when time is a factor.

    • @BLACKIETHOMAS
      @BLACKIETHOMAS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it really is especially in my deep south when your hot and need water a cold stream is great but to have to boil and wait hrs for it to cool proper or add tabs is a hassle being able to dip the cup press it closed and still have cold water right out of the ground and drink all you need its really worth the high cost

    I have the same setup you have with the Grayl, except I have sawyer filter and a Nalgene bottle. was thinking of going with a steel kleen canteen bottle. I probably ought to get a mil bank bag. it's not as important out west since we tend to have more clear water. but it's still not a bad idea. I like the idea of flipping the handle around on the Stanley cup but my Nalgene won't nest in it anyway. also the lid of the Stanley fits the drinking cup i have perfectly. so it's doing double duty.

    Gr8 video, a nalgene will fit in that usgi canteen pouch, with a nesting cup. My go to for a short hike and camp, is the Mors bush pot, the lixada gasifier wood stove nests inside perfeck,along with misc. Free twigs most everywhere. And sawyer mini, for the water.

    Probably too late, but to replace the plastic tab on that Stanley pot, try one of these: Nite Ize SB2-03-11 Size-2 S-Biner Dual Carabiner. Works well with much easier on and off.

    Good commentary comparison, Blackie. I would ask for a price comparison between the sets, and compared it also to the titanium GI sets, along with their heat retention or heat shedding characteristics as a potential advantage over steel. As always, you present information that is useful, understandable, and sensible.

    Depending on the size you COULD put a life straw inside the grayl and get even QUICKER drank of water from that cool stream.
    Been watching you for awhile and David Pearson, learning lots from both of you.
    Knowledge is power.

    The biggest downside of the grayl system is the half kilo that it weighs empty. It's worth the carry but worth noting. Also, since this video was made, you can get ultra presses, which are a smaller version.

    Awesome comparison! I also have both but am working on getting used to the Grayl and system I have for it. I am thinking of adding some of my spices and stuff to my Blackbird haversack as even with the tin pocket on the Stitched Gear carrier, I tend to bring more stuff with me than the tin will hold. I’ll follow up with ya at your gathering next spring! Take care!

    Good video Blackie, I hope that you and your family had a great Christmas!!
    The Grayl Geopress (full size version) holds 24 ounces vs the G.I. canteen of 32 ounces.
    I have 2 Geopresses, 1 on my pack and the 2nd one as a standalone hydration/cook kit in a tall Maxpedition bottle holder (with extra pouch for a fire kit) and sling that I keep in my truck.
    Personally, I wouldn't even consider buying the "UltraLight" version as it's capacity is only 16 ounces.

    your reasoning has solid logic . i just can't bring my cheap self to purchase the grayl at its higher cost and higher up keep value . IF i go round i use a sawyer with a kleen canteen and the same pot and cup you have. If i go USGI i use a stainless steel canteen with cup, never found a solid use to have a stove, with nearly the same setup you have and a sawyer water filter with it as well. I have crawled the mountains of NC and never needed more.

  • @hammerhound168
    @hammerhound168 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good job, But 1 advantage of old school army canteen pouch is its furry padded interior. yes it keeps quieter, but it main purpose is evaporative cooling ( many of the new water bottle bags have it too) just soak it with water and place your canteen inside. As it dries it cools your water. TY Blackie !

    What about the Pathfinder bag that came with it water bottle for the round one with the grill fit in it? Or one of the other less expensive bags like the Pathfinder bag would it fit in there? And if you had the Pathfinder around water bottle in canteen you would need to get the Stanley canteen correct? I really enjoy your videos buddy I’ve been with you since 2013. Keep them coming I keep watching and passing them all day everybody.

    You have me thinking about trying a Grayl filter instead of my usual Sawyer Squeeze. The small millbank bag is a game changer. Have you seen the simple theory gear dot com stove for the Stanley pot? It looks like an elegant solution to me, and the one who dies owning the most stoves wins, right? :)

    Blackie, I watched your newest video, and I rewatched this one. The question I've had for some time is, knowing about the funkiness that happens drinking from water containers for days, can you sanitize the Grayl in the field? I'm assuming of you drink directly from it, it will foul over time? Thanks!

      You could always file a little of the ends of the handle until you can get it out.
