Nice video and variety of cooking equipment. I think both the 8" and 10" Firebox skillet and cowboy plates are worth mentioning. I do a lot of cooking and baking with mine.

Enjoyed the video, looking forward to getting started. The big hunk of meat being trimmed as it cooked leaaving the uncooked meat to cook further was a new concept for me. That kind of info/insight/tip is one reason why I and probably lots of others enjoy watching your videos. Keep up the good work, I always learn something new from your videos.

I recently got a canteen cook set, from the surplus. Before that I used an enameled steel 1 quart sauce pan and 2.5 quart stew pot I picked up cheap at the ?Mexican grocery store. Filled up with beans and rice and grits and coffee and oatmeal, I could eat out of those for a week. Not real light, tho.

  • @wordwalker3

Excellent video giving a great overview of different types of gear for different uses, with one exception. The large frying pan you show with the orange silicone cover on the handle, you describe it as a "Lodge cast iron pan". Any cast iron pans I have seen have had handles as part of the casting. This one has the handle riveted onto the pan. I believe the pan you showed is actually a Lodge "high carbon steel" pan. A significantly heaver (thicker) carbon steel than that used in the "cool handle" pan, but it is definitely not a cast iron pan.

Great video brother. During extended power outages (like after hurricanes) I've baked on my gas stove at home in one of my Dutch ovens. They are truly the Swiss army knife of cookware.. 😄

Very easy to make a lid for the IMUSA Mugs.
Flat Cat Gear sells dry bake pans with the lips removed so they will fit inside lots of popular pots.

Hi, Blackie. I like the looks of your Hellfire grills. I think I would carry a couple of spring clip round carabiner (that's the nomenclature on Amazon) to clip the two grills together to form one larger grill.

A good follow on to the first 👍 .. thanks.
A piece of cookware that I got a while back and which has really become one of my favourites is the Tatonka 18cm Stainless Steel Bowl (with Handle). An extremely versatile item which, the more you use, the more uses you find for it. That, together with an Aluminium Kettle (which nests nicely inside it, both packing nice and flat) and the deep GSI Cup with the large One Litre+ Kleen Kanteen nested inside it, I can do much of which I plan to do cooking-wise.
Those who complain about Stainless Steel and Aluminium 'sticking' .. be patient, control the heat and don't be afraid to stir regularly. Sure they may need more hands-on supervision but then, it's the outdoors, no need to multi-task.
    Take care ..

I found an MSR lidded pot, sticking out of a snow bank. To which I added an MSR stainless steel bowl . (Heat or eat)
      Which makes a similar kit.
I've also used a ss dog food bowl. Flat bottom cheap and stable. Two stacked with binder clips makes an oven.

I still have my Boy Scout set from the 70's. It's aluminum but it has worked for me. Just gotta watch the temp. I use cast iron now days. Love my dutch oven. It's my go to for everything from cornbread, biscuts, cakes, pies, stews, ect., ect.. My main gripe is today I can't find cast iron that has the smooth finish like my 1800's iron has. If anyone knows of a brand that has this type of finish please comment. Hard to beat my old Griswalds!

Good stuff Blackie, thanks for a solid, thorough introduction and foundational talk on the gear you’re going to use. I have to admit I’m just a carbon steel skillet and small bushpot guy who adjusts my fire source based on opportunity and conditions ( no open fires out here in the mountain west 6 months out of the year), I’m looking forward to seeing some of that dutch oven cooking as well as the utilization of varoius other small kits.

I love my Dutch ovens. I have an 8, 10, 12 & 14. At a living history event where we have a competition pot luck for 40-50 I used both the 12 and the 14. The dish was well liked. Cleaned out no left overs.
    Day to day I used a 1.
litre copper pot and eather 10 or 12 inch DO. Not that I needed the capacity. It is easier to git a spatula in it or a regular pie tin inside.
At one point I picked up then passed on a 25 ! The explorers now cook a whole turkey in it.
    All the best

The SVEA and his kidney relatives are intended as a cook pot for more than one person, the idea was that a squad or team could cook (baking, roasting, boiling) a meal or more together at the same time.
pot 1 boil the potatoes, pot 2 "coffee", .....
I´ve copies of 2 old german military field cookbooks and they describe very well how the cook kit every soldier got should be used

Thanks Blackie, can't wait for more videos! I have a question, what kind of camp kettle do you have? is it steel, aluminum or titanium? and what you would recommend never had or tried a kettle before. I've always used the stainless steel coffee percs. I have a 3 cup and 12 cup. I've been wanting to try a kettle since they are much shorter and compact. But there are so many out there on the market now, very daunting, and I don't want to spend too much on one.

Ok these last two are like my grandaughter "long story cut short" and then she goes into great de-tale. So I'm watching and thinking wouldn't it be better to cut to the chase and start cooking and show the pots and such then? So like you're going to cook bacon the very least you'll need a camp fire, a grill, a sheet of heavy aluminum foil and a bacon flipper of some kind.
