hi blackie, retired us army here. while still in the service. i added a 2nd us army canteen to my military gear. reason is i hate plain water. so this 2nd canteen set, including stove. was my cook set. while my issued set was my drinking set. near the end of my service i added the 2qt with cover & carry strap to my personal gear, along with a 2nd 1qt canteen set. for a couple of decades that was my standard water carry setup. after watching some of the other videos on you tube i have added a couple of single wall ss water bottles to my truck carry gear, for like you have stated. being able to heat snow. a couple years ago i added a 3liter camelbac & sawyer water filter to my setup. earlier this year, i attended a auction an scored big time. from the auction i picked up a early wwii shelter half set(buttons instead of snaps), the older style poles, wooden tent pegs. me i always used snaps. part of the rest was that era metal canteen set. from watching your 2 videos on canteens i have also learned a couple of things. like the denture cleaner for cleaning the canteens. the nalgene bottles. will have to look for one. an painting my cook cup with bbq heat paint. thank you an the folks watching your videos for the information.
I always thought it'd be cool if someone could make an old school round canteen with a wide mouth that could fit into the arctic canteen pouch with cup.
I use to use just a plastic 2 liter pop bottle in a wool home made bag that had an aluminum cup I bought at the time for $2.50 at a dollar store. It was good enough to do an over night camp. Now I have the Self Reliance canteen kit with a Sawyer filter to go with it. I fill the bottle and screw on the filter and squeeze to get a drink, fill the canteen or cup to cook with. I was a boy scout Scout leader and we went camping at least once a month, 12 mouths a year along with a couple of week long camps for years. I have done a lot of camping and this set up has never let me down. Recently I have purchased a two cup Stanley cook set and a US GI mess kit to add to my kit. Because Being in my late 60s I just do car camping now so I don't have to carry the weight very far.
back in the day when I rode a big bike I used to strap a US GI 2 quart canteen in its cover to the bottom yoke on the forks just under the headlight of course the windflow kept the contents ice cold
'58 pattern canteen comes with a plastic cup and canteen, metal cup and lid and a burner that can be used with twigs, fuel tablets or a Trangia. They are my go to set after 20 years with British Airborne. Good video Blackie.
It did from the mid 90s onwards. Prior to that it was the Osprey bottle and cup - which nested on top of the bottle not vice versa so you had to pull it out to access the water bottle - in a tight fitting canvas pouch which used to shrink when wet, which happened often in Sennybridge, Otterburn, or NW Germany. The BCB Crusader MK1 & 2 equipment which was added to it later (mid 90s) makes it usable. Now in civvy street I use a Dutch Army canteen and steel cup (like the US GI type) which go in a waterproof not-too-tight cordura DPM pouch, and there's room for a Pathfinder stainless lid and a stainless folding twig stove which also can be used with twigs, tablets or Firedragon gel, or a Trangia (fits perfectly). On overnighters I add to that one of my Dutch mess tins - like the British ones but stainless and with rolled edges - and a copy of the old mess tin lid / frying pan which did exist at some time on issue (as it had an NSN) but I never saw anyone with one. Back in those days Airborne and SF used to opt for the British 44 pattern bottle and metal cup as the Osprey setup was gash.
👍. The Swiss Military M84 Canteen Set is another worth considering. Still commonly available and reasonably priced. A Robust 800ml Polymer Plastic Canteen with a 400ml (300ml usable) Aluminium Cup .. a good Swiss Quality Product.
The local princess auto store( U.S. version of Tractor supply) had some about 2 years ago. I bought 2, then another one, then they went on sale and I went back and got a Credit for the previous ones I bought as well as picked up a couple more 🙄😅🤦♂️
The last part of the video mentioned sweating puddles. If you're sweating that much then you need to replace electrolytes. Drinking more water will make electrolyte depletion worse! Look for something in the grocery store called Lite Salt. This is salt that has 50% less sodium. The missing sodium is replaced with potassium chloride. This means that Lite Salt has both sodium and potassium, both of which are important electrolytes. Put a tablespoon of Lite Salt in 1 liter of water or to taste. You want it salty enough to taste it but not so salty you can't chug it, but don't chug it. Mix in 1 tablespoon of a carbohydrate source like honey, agave nectar, or real maple syrup. Electrolytes and carbs are good energy and will perk you up. So again: 1 liter of water 1 tablespoon of Lite Salt 1 tablespoon of honey, agave, or maple syrup
O ring fixed my 2 Brit 58 canteens leak. If you use a Brit utility pouch you can use a USGI canteen set with another cup on top of canteen. It won't snap on like the 58 style does, looks like a German Bundeswehr set. Got some USGI canteen cups without handles on them from SMG years ago. I put one in my cup for my canteen set giving me 2 cups in one ALICE LC-2 cover.
I wish Abercrombie and Fitch or some other Outfitters company, would bring back the Preston Messkit...awesome kit that marries together a canteen an cup along with a skillet and plate that can come together to make a small oven....All fits together on your hip...
The Swedish flask is very cool. I own one. I use the cup mainly for drinking whiskey in the field or in the backyard if I'm grilling. It has one huge drawback though. The inside of the canteen taints the water giving it a bad taste. For that reason I do not recommend it for field use except as a novelty item- as in drinking whiskey in the back yard with your friends.
That is actually an old style Swiss army canteen. Got mine in basic training 1986, but I believe the design is much older. The newer model with a plastic bottle and aluminum cup was introduced in 84, I was issued one in ~1990.

The best part is when you think you probably wont need water it is a simple carry. Chances are you will drain it and want to refill it. Not to hard from a drinking fountain. The BCB Crusader/Type 58 is available from Amazon last I looked a coupe of months ago, but it ain't cheap. Right up there with the Pathfinder version. After years of looking I finally broke down and bought the Keith/Heavy cover set in titanium. Comes with the cup and lid and is very sturdy and is somewhat lighter than the military or Pathfinder sets, Fits a GI carrier but I prefer to use the "Mother" carrier from Center Line Systems. Have it rigged to carry on a shoulder strap. Expensive yes but worth it. For a secondary canteen/water bottles I go with the Nalgene canteens. Will occasionally use a 3 quart Camelback rig in very dry country or anywhere water availability is doubtful.

It has a cup with strap attached to it preventing it from being used over a fire, canteen cup and water bottle, all of which is aluminum. Blackie a good video to go with this would be a surplus cook sets I know up have several. I bought a Russian cup and lid but have not cleaned out the grease out of it. any ideas on getting the grease out.
If it's all metal : throw it into the fire and let the grease burn out. Once it's cooled off scrub with warm water and soap, rince . If it is not metal : throw it into the garbage can.
I've heard that the US Military no longer issues canteens and especially the one with the cup. You get a Camelbak, that's it. I'd say buy this stuff while you can, as they get scarce the price goes up. I've got several of the canteen/cup types and one of those 2 quart like you showed last.
@@asmith7876 yep. I was issued canteens, a few units that went to Afghanistan and Iraqi Freedom came back with earlier versions of Camelbaks. I now have regular plastic canteens, a two-quart canteen, a water filtration canteen and a very nice high-capacity Camelbak with removable mouth valve, storage pouches, MOLLE straps and padded Fastex buckled shoulder straps. @@davidcruz8667 And an extra 17 pounds of water! Glad I didn’t have to carry mine, had a jerry can on an APC. Glad you made it back. I was in so long ago I didn’t get recalled for the 1st Gulf War!

I miss my M16A2, but I'm now the proud owner of a beautiful accurized M1A. If you were in in the sixties, you may have carried an M14 or M16/M16A1.
Yeah, I own one of the two quart rubber military water carriers, they are nice as long as you carry a metal cup\pot with you as well. What do you think of those M&M shaped canteens, I guess they are shaped to be against your body?
After watching this I looked up the collapsible 2qt canteen on amazon and have one coming. I excpect it to stay my pack as a backup water container. Im wondering if the gas mask straw port could be maybe adapted to work with a sawyer squeeze.
For Europe i doubt the price difference between the "plastic" canteens will be worth it to not buy a nalgene. Their flask could also ´ve some use. I personally put a bottle carrier on a haversack for a short hike
Blackie....i have never trusted stream water, we always packed water in with us and conserve what we brought,....could you do a water vid series cause getting sick off water way out in bush scares me 😨
They make water filters that can take water from nearly any source and make it potable. Good stuff costs money but NOT having bloody diarrhea is priceless! At 8.33 pounds per gallon it simply isn't possible in some places to pack that in.
I have a french canteen too. It leaked. I sanded . It still leaked. I replaced seal 2-3 ,times. Still leaked. I finally got it to quit, by using a thicker, than the seal, cork. Just an fyi
@@BLACKIETHOMAS I have seen a lot of things on WM's website that I know they don't carry. They are trying to be Amazon, but I think they should stay with what they know. I bought a BCB Crusader cook stand only on ebay from the UK. Shipping was like $17.
the pathfinder set would be my last choice. everything he sells is over priced. I built an entire set for 1/4 of the price of his newer fancy titanium set. past that the set you did not mention that is cheaper and more rugged is a nalgene bottle, not the oasis canteen, and a cup and bottle carrier. my entire set cost me less than $20 for 32 ounce capacity with a 20 ounce cup and lid and that all included a molle carrier to haul it all. in the end though, i use a 1.5 liter water bladder with a titanium cook set, and a 1 liter Nalgene oasis canteen. Yeah, I own one of the two quart rubber military water carriers, they are nice as long as you carry a metal cup\pot with you as well. What do you think of those M&M shaped canteens, I guess they are shaped to be against your body?
I saw some of those the other day, I picked up a plastic 1 liter (I think) canteen
After watching this I looked up the collapsible 2qt canteen on amazon and have one coming. I excpect it to stay my pack as a backup water container.
Im wondering if the gas mask straw port could be maybe adapted to work with a sawyer squeeze.
i am sure with enough time and resources anything is possible
For Europe i doubt the price difference between the "plastic" canteens will be worth it to not buy a nalgene.
Their flask could also ´ve some use.
I personally put a bottle carrier on a haversack for a short hike
Personal question.... if you had to choose a primary gun (longgun) but had to be black powder what would it be (only long gun you can have)
Blackie....i have never trusted stream water, we always packed water in with us and conserve what we brought,....could you do a water vid series cause getting sick off water way out in bush scares me 😨
They make water filters that can take water from nearly any source and make it potable.
Just an fyi
O-ring from the hardware store will fix the leak
Where are the source of the French and Swedish canteen with the cork? Never saw them before.
check sportsmans guide and ebay
I save wine bottle corks. Also for Bobbers

Are you sure Walmart sells the type 58? I've never seen them in the states.
i have seen the crusader cook set on the website before..but having said that i just checked and they got lot of canteen sets but that one must be out
@@BLACKIETHOMAS I have seen a lot of things on WM's website that I know they don't carry. They are trying to be Amazon, but I think they should stay with what they know. I bought a BCB Crusader cook stand only on ebay from the UK. Shipping was like $17.
bcb crusader cup aluminium,or inox or titane more rare
blackie how old are you?
thats a odd question...lol pushing 60
the pathfinder set would be my last choice. everything he sells is over priced. It is all no bigger than a fanny pack and i can operate in water rich or poor environments.
Good luck boiling water in that nalgene.
@@deansch6089I've used Nalgene for over 30 years. Never needed to boil water in my canteen. IMO, boiling water in a canteen is an overrated gimmick to sell gear. Bring along a Billy can or cup and you're covered, just as Mr Canterbury did in his early vids.
