Ambulances are the only one of the emergency vehicles that not only have to get to the scene fast but also have to leave in a hurry some times as well. In my 15 years as a Toronto Advanced Care Paramedic I can count on 1 hand the number of escorted runs we had.

Only legal as well if the officer is out of their vehicle physically directing traffic. Otherwise the Ambulance must still come to a complete stop at a red light before proceeding through.
