You Can't Escape the Past
With the release of the live action Netflix Cowboy Bebop, Nerd Talk Dan has made a retrospective (anime explained in English video essay) of the anime Cowboy Bebop, one of the most revered works to hit the west in the early 2000s. Directed by Shinichiro Watanabe and with music by the now legendary Yoko Kanno, anime Cowboy Bebop showed us what would happen if jazz was anime by embodying the soul of jazz through an improvisational nature based on a strong and familiar structure.

Anime Cowboy Bebop is a 26 episode series from Sunrise (Sunrise anime) following futuristic bounty hunters Spike Spiegel, Faye Valentine, Jet Black, Ed, and Ein as they travel the solar system hunting criminals.
Taking place in the far future of 2071, Cowboy Bebop shows a civilization with amazing technology but still cursed with the fundamental darkness which has long plagued the hearts of men. Shinichiro Watanabe (Sunrise), Cowboy Bebop's creator, assembled a creative team which pushed the boundaries of storytelling from Japan by showing how do Spike, Faye, and Jet cope with a cruel and unforgiving world.
Nerd Talk Dan ( Exploring the Tragic Beauty of Rurouni Kenshin / Discovering the Magic of FLCL / Gundam Wing: The Iconic Mecha Anime That Captured a Generation) analyzes how the anime Cowboy Bebop embodies the soul of jazz. That sense of individual expression and embracing of creative experimentation. With Yoko Kanno a famous composer of anime songs and the creator of Cowboy Bebop's famous intro song Tank! (Tank), the anime took risks in an industry that is notoriously risk averse. But Cowboy Bebop reached new heights when it debuted on Adult Swim (Adult Swim anime / Cartoon Network old shows) in the year 2001. Cowboy Bebop resonated deeply with audiences by showing us a dynamic and amazing world which is still, tragically, so much like our own.
So check out the anime Cowboy Bebop on Netflix and when you're finished back, grab a box of tissues and enjoy Anime Cowboy Bebop and the Soul of Jazz | Anime Explained in English _________________________________________________________________________

I love wing 🪽
Ethnic stereotypes are based
finally someone that makes a good wing video.
Thanks for the kind words! If you know any Gundam fans, spread the word lol. Have a great day
i watched this ova after watchinig this video it really is a work of art, i will say i dont think you emphasized enough just how much the music effects the story. the score in these ovas is really amazing
I hope you enjoyed it! The OVA is really something special. Have a great day!
I hope you've got a chance to watch the newest anime its very very very very good in a lot of ways.
I’m not caught up (stopped in the Tokyo Arc) but I’ve been hearing good things!
It had bigger ideas and aspirations than what the 49 episodes could complete. It is still good, even if somewhat unfinished feeling
@@leonvalentine3748 absolutely! I don’t think there’s anything wrong with shooting for the moon, but if you’re gonna open up some questions, you need to try and resolve them. That said, man was it a great watch as a kid!
@NerdTalkDan now, I could make an argument that the show is framed much like a stage melodrama. Which would explain the philosophical waxing and the on the nose names such as Heero and Peacecraft. As far as the incomplete feeling, I wonder if they were given a "wrap it up by x-date" scenario and had to resolve. Especially since they changed directors halfway through production.
I NEVER realized it was a clothing iron. my god
Gives you a good excuse for a rewatch!

@@MOHDHAYATBINELIASMOH Thank YOU 🙏
Halo 3 and the book Contact Harvest confirmed it both in 2007 already. No idea why you said that Bungie has anything to do with the changes, all the stuff that came out during the Bungie era told you that Forerunners are Human or don't talk about the Forerunner at all. The only thing that came out during the Bungie era that doesn't go with that is 343 first fan faction work - Halo Legends. Halo 4&5, all the books that came after Halo: The Cole Protocol are just fan factions that got made official by Microsoft/343. There is a reason why Infinite killed off the bullshit ship that never made any sense 4 years after the UNSC lost basically everything and most of the Halo 4&5 characters in the first 3 mins of it's story. And Infinite story itself is so pointless, since all we do is: -get Cortana 2.0 which ofc still is a baby -fly around with the crying guy that had not enough time to grow out of that annoying part -we killed some bad guys that really badly want to put "killed Masterchief" on their LinkedIn profile page xD -and apparently we got some kind of time travel now (which could also be used to explain why we get remakes as next games)
Stereotypes are alive for a reason
Knocked it out of the park
It's one of very few anime I can go back to later and like it even better than the first three or four times. As one of those works that is completely unhinged and drenched in creative passion, to where part of enjoying it is imagining how much fun coming up with all the crazy ideas must have been. Similarly to works like Dragon's Heaven where what I assume to be a massive part of the budget, was spent building a stupid big model of the main robot, just so they could shoot a cool intro for it with smoke effects and lighting. Or Kemono Friends, Inferno Cop and South Park, in their specific niches.
Thank you for this!
@@chavezdelbarrio9839 Thanks for watching! If you enjoyed this one, I have some other videos which you might enjoy. Have a great holiday season!
Many gundam series have inconsistencies, but when someone has to pay the price they do it, gundan wing doesn't have that. Anyway, the political background was always my favorite, only when you grow up do you understand how there are so many factions constantly stabbing each other in the series.
Great video!
How did G Gundam stereotype cultures, by referencing the fact that they exist? Im ethnically Mexican and I can’t wait for Bandai to make the HG Tequila Gundam. And are we gonna act like there aren’t any zebra in Kenya, snake charmers in India, or absolute chads in the USA? Come on now…
I live by those scars, the batosai way of life
Kenshin is honestly probably my favorite anime Shonen protagonist and the Kyoto are is GOATED
G Gundam is the worst Gundam series
THIS WAS SO FANTASTIC!!
Thanks so much!
love your vids man.
Much obliged! Remember to spread the word!
Your video here came out around a year before "C3 SABERTOOTH - Halo Channel" 's video "HALO: We WERE Forerunner!", everything is explained absolutely there. tl;dr the Forerunners made homo sapiens' ancerstors become like forerunners by guiding their evolution, therefore giving humanity not only similar DNA, but making them re-tread the Forerunners' steps, perfect example being ALL human architecture starting to resemble the Forerunner's.
reminder that forerunners being a separate species is way better
It isn't.
The betrayal I felt when I found out about the author getting arrested for child porn
Gundam Wing was the shit to me as a kid. Never miss an episode and rewatching it on Crunchyroll app after 25 years later. Never gets old 😎😎😎😎😎
It’s a fun but if nostalgia for sure!
German here, loved the show when it came and it absolutely stuck to me. That theme song is so good, still and forever stuck in my head. IF ONLY THERE WERE ACTUAL HG OR EVEN RG MOOK SUITS! I'd pay a LOT for a good HG Aeris kit! Love that suit so much! Also good you point the child soldiers out and how damaged they are underneath.
Dude you made this video in 2019?? You were speaking the truth long before we were willing to listen. Honestly the fact that we didn't know humans were forerunnners is kinda embarrassing. It was directly in frornt of us and we were to dumb to figure it out. I randomly came to this conclusion while replying halo 3 or 1 a few years ago. Just playing the game, taking everything in, then going "wait, humans are Forerunners. That just makes so much more sense." Also anyone who says 343 GS is an unreliable source, he literally is telling the truth about everything else in the games(sometime he withholds information). Why would he lie about the Forerunners identity
I thought Gainax's trademark was bouncing boobs. Not complaining. Just saying.
Censoring America Fuck Yeah was a bad move
by using a soundtrack that undertones the conflict, the show makes us feel like the conflict itself is the payoff. And it is perfect with the feeling that the show tries to convey. When we are maturing, conflict, more often than not, is, itself, a kind of payoff to the turmoil that goes within us. It is not the sollution to conflict, but the rupture that makes us grow
Tell me you didn’t get the point of the religious themes without telling me. The villains of the series are religious zealots. Christianity is the least metal thing there is. It’s cringe. It’s the cult for boot-licking sheep and takes advantage of their fear of their own impermanence.
They ARE human. The same way you and neanderthals are both humans. The same way erectus and florensiensis are both humans. They're just a different species of human.
They could have been a different species of human, or they could have been a collection of subspecies of Homo sapiens or even both.
i hope you get to making videos somewhat more often again, love your channel
Thanks so much for the kind words. It means a lot to hear that. Gotta get off my lazy bum and back to work!
"bungie & 343 made some missteps" yeah you mean 343, I'm sick and tired of people claiming that "humans were never forerunner in the lore!" or "bungie changed it with the terminals in halo 3" stfu, you can use common sense from the dialogue in the first 3 games but there are plenty of videos explaining in detail if you wanna go over every stupid detail of the lore
@@antic4mper819 I mean…I literally made a video saying that the Forerunner should’ve remained human?
Nice to get a retrospective from someone who watched the show as a kid like I did
It was a great time to grow up
You should stop posting. Your vids are trash
I miss the 90s early 2000s Bayridge Brooklyn being born in 93 man toonami was the HOTTEST SH/T out there man
Rush home after school to watch Toonami! Good times
very very very gud 👍
The ending hurts my soul, its just so depressing
I feel like making the self-awareness a plot element takes away from the movie's story and also the nature of the 4th wall breaking jokes
My favorite Gundam series
It’s a fun watch!
I don’t recall Gundam Wing looking so clear and smooth.
@@xwarped83 HD version!
It's important to distinguish that the Gundam pilots are guerrilla fighters, not terrorists, as their actions are focused on military targets
Imma be honest, I didn’t get any of this when I was 13
The great part of looking back on things we watched as kids is the ability to interpret things in new light. Also gives us an excuse to watch some cool stuff again!
The background music in this masterpiece of an anime is epic.
The music is amazing!
I just like big robot and model kit. Also Jon Stuart is an insufferable regard
I never got the sense that the Gundam pilots were disposable and sent on a kamikaze mission. I think the creation of the Gundams and their missions were last ditch efforts by the colonies to disrupt the Earth government and slow down their inevitable complete takeover of the colonies.
@@PoppaCYS I feel ya, but the original Operation: Meteor had the pilots mostly serving as a distraction while a colony drop happened. Their purpose wasn’t to slow down the takeover of the colonies, that was already the case. Their job once the pilots and scientists decided to go AWOL in protest of the original plan was to destroy OZ. We know for a fact that they are mission critical and valuable assets, but like all soldiers are disposable if the need arises, for example when Une aims missiles at a colony, Dr. J basically tells Heero to destroy the Gundam and himself with it (although he seems to have always been a bit self destructive). The point is that, like any soldier, their lives are secondary to the mission and the cause.
