    Fantastic demonstration of the differences …. So many guitar 🎸 phaser demos have the phaser rate too high and then play too many notes… it all becomes a frustrating jumbled mess .

    The stereo example sounds great ! It reminds me of the flanger/panning effect heard at the end of Muse's Citizen Erased.
    However, the Small Stone is true bypass, so I don't think placing them in the audio path at the same time would ensure their LFOs are synchronized in phase. Maybe switching their power on at the same time would, but then again small tolerance difference in analog parts would probably come into play. It still sounds amazing !

    Tried this at home with two effects like this in stereo. By increasing ever so slightly the modulation of one effect, opposed to the other, you can achieve better phasing continuity. ( :

    Thanks for doing this. Was wondering how to pull this off. Was worried about the LFO sync issue but it seems with some tweaking you can get them pretty close. I wish someone would do a stereo ANALOG phaser w a mix knob though. Will try this trick for now. Keep it up!

    Are you playing Jean Michelle Jarre chords there? It sure reminds me of it. I never realized how cool phasers sounded on synths, I'd always thought of them as a poor relation to the flanger. To my ears now, phasing seems much more useful on synths than on guitar. Looking at the small stone schematics in a Google search it looks like the same LFO is supplying the 4 filters in the circuit, so I guess it wouldn't be that hard to tap off that from one to another in some way. But it sounded nice just getting them in about the same spot as you say, that random factor is a beautiful thing.

    I have two of Behringer's VP-1 Vintage Phaser pedals (both of them which I bought second hand for about 40 bucks each), and together with the Orange Phaser in my trusty old Eleven Rack I get all the phasing I ever need. However, there is something curious about the Behringer pedals: they have very different ranges of rate. One can go a lot slower at the minimum knob position and accordingly, doesn’t get as fast when turned to maximum, and the other doesn't get as slow, but when maxed out, goes almost to audio frequency range. I wonder if there are actually differences between different pedals out of the box, or could one be modded? The knobs feel different too, the one with the slower range has a lot "wobblier" knob. Perhaps somebody replaced the original potentiometer and the difference comes from different resistance range? I'm sure somebody with more solid knowledge in electronics than me could explain it. Or maybe I should just take them apart and see what's inside and whether there are obvious signs of modification.

    • @ranzee
      @ranzee  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah they're pretty good for the coin. I'd take them apart - take some photos. we have a discord group you can share and discuss if you like:

    Why, to my taste, does Small Stone-specifically the Behringer clone I have-sound better than other analog phasers? With a Tomsline G-Fuzz in front of the Behringer, it’s the best fuzz & phaser combo I’ve heard! For a total of $60-70 USD?!

    • @chiefbucknell
      @chiefbucknell 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn’t hurt that JMJ or Jonny Greenwood are renowned Small Stone users. Maybe that’s why my ear prefers its synthy, slightly overdriven-ish (?) sounding goodness.

  • @apislapis
    @apislapis 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Perhaps instead of the 4 stage phaser ehx small stone try the six stage ehx bad stone instead. If you want a stereo phaser the tc electronic helix is a very affordable option for synthesists. There are far too few demos of fx pedals plugged into synths on youtube, why should guitarists have all the fun?. Anyone prepared to post synth + fx pedal videos on here will get a thumbs up from me. Nice work ranzee.

    • @ranzee
      @ranzee  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers apislapis! I ended up getting a couple of new pedals: Moogerfooger MF-103 12-stage analog phaser and the MXR Phase-99 - both have stereo outputs - which is super cool. I'm currently filming a new video, so hopefully will have that up soon!

      @@ranzee hello mate! love your video. I was surprised by how good the 2x small stone combo sounded, i thought it'd sound wonky and drunk but actually sounds fantastic. it's useful because it'd work with a stereo synth, whereas the MF-103 (which I'm sure is the creme de la creme alongside Mutron) and MXR phase 99 only have mono in. Would two Behringers work?

  • @albertpauw8234
    @albertpauw8234 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Sounds great, just a shame that the 6-note polyphony of the VP-03 cuts of the notes, but that's the limitation of the boutique. Also the tone of the strings is a bit harsh, maybe if you take down the tone control of the strings a bit it even sounds better. Thanks for this video! Always love oxygene and equinoxe of JMJ. Have you tried it with the Streichfett? Probably sounds even harsher but there is more polyphony.
