Really appreciated this podcast about spiritual leadership - its joys, sorrows, challenges and failures. Usefully challenging to us all for both laity and clergy alike! In the present beginnings of post lockdown - much of what you have said is profoundly prophetic as to how we move forward as the Catholic Church - more purified and with smaller numbers initially it would seem. Not something to be afraid of ... it has happened before .. you quoted the Penal Times in Ireland when priests were prepared to go to their deaths for the sake of Christ and his Holy Church. These times are upon us again. What matters is Heaven and Eternal Life and priests and people alike need to be mindful of this and remember that our role as catholic faithful along side our priests is to lead people to Heaven. Jesus invites us into the Boat of the Church. He is with us ...despite the horrific and torrential storms, the boat has never sunk - it will remain, for the gates of Hell will not prevail against God's Holy Church. We have to have the courage to be with JESUS in the Boat of God's Holy Church, in this storm, no matter what the cost!

Lay Catholics need to lead where they are at in the world, in their families, communities, at work. My biggest challenge as a parent is to pass on the faith. Too many parents expect that their catholic schools will do this, or at least to help. The catholic schools I sent my kids to, did Nothing to pass on the faith, they actually undermined it, ( a non practicing, probably non believing teacher preparing children for sacraments, does untold damage, as children idolise their teachers). Lay Catholics in Ireland need to build their own faith communities, we need to cling to each other, while always reaching out to others. Thankfully we have found some other slight crazies to cling to. My family will be in Mayo in the weeks ahead, we might drop by and demand some orthodoxy!!

I wish to God that what you say about the laity teaching in their homes, or wherever, would happen. If we knew the faith, and passed it on, it would transform the Church. I pray God that it happens soon.

At age 15 I knew that the Catholic Church said no to contraception. At age 55 I finally began to understand why. And I went to catholic school. And I as well as most catholics I knew as an adult used contraceptives. Start there. Educate and catechize the next generation. I guess now at age 65 I have finally arrived where I started and I now know the place.
