The government did an enquiry and have been using it against our faith since then....I went to Boarding School and this did not happen. I do accept it is shocking and unacceptable behavior, lord help all who suffered. The abuse also happened in other schools , clubs etc. I agree that it should be an inclusive review and not just one aera singled out...carried out by independent people👏
Abortion is murder of the innocent and sickens me physically....review of this in 50years. Thanks for talking about this issue someone needs to ...

An excellent talk, Fr Brendan. I agree whole heartedly with your insistence that the government do a forensic examination of all secondary schools. I worked in a DEIS community school from 1996- 2016. By and large the staff was very committed. And there was a robust pastoral care team of year heads, tutors, counsellors and school completion officers.
However, we had at least two teachers who were renowned bullies. They were responsible for practically all of the suspensions and expulsions in the school. One of my colleagues, a guidance counsellor, tackled one of those teachers after counselling a 13 year old who was terrified of him. The teacher in question threatened both the union and his solicitor and the counsellor ended up having to apologise to him. I was the witness to the apology.
A number of past pupils told me that they had been bullied by this ame teacher but no action had been taken by the school against him.
There are so many safe guards for teachers and the unions will back them up to the utmost. I won't go into details about the other teacher, whose bullying I witnessed myself, and who managed to have an autistic, special needs student expelled.
You may ask why I didn't report the incident of bullying I had witnessed, but there would have been point. It's not so easy as people think.
I believe we should push for a more thorough investigation into the state as well as the Catholic schools. But will it happen? I doubt it. It makes one think that the powers that be are only interested in demonising a particular section of the educational sector.

I get so cross at the constant slamming of the Catholic Church by the media. Before the 1970 Ireland couldn’t afford Schools or . hospitals. Our fantastic education system (which was the basis for current buoyant economy)was provided by nuns brothers and priests. The nuns looked after the hospitals the dealt with everything speedily and hospital hygiene was meticulous ( unlike todays hospitals). I know the abuse from religious was a tiny fraction of the abuse country wide. Abuse is always awfully but it seems to me that when there is a smell of compensation they come out of the woodwork. Often times condemning people now dead who can’t stand up for themselves. Money should never be part of the solution to these problems but justice is the answer.

Is it the one without any form of academic qualification or experience in any higher management or military positions? Crazy isn't it that people who are not fit to lead are propped up to run the country. Someone who was the health minister during Covid and over 5000 dead but no repercussions on the failure to keep people and business safe at that point of time. Zero accountability. Then goes on to become minister for higher education while himself dropped out of University and now leads the country.

Fr Brendan, it is uncomfortable listening to you dealing with these really difficult topics. Its also really cathartic and good to see you address this particular attrocity. When are we going to, as a culture, have a balanced view and while we must purge the abuse, recognize that the Church served the culture, through education, health and social cohesion? We can and should make both truths clear. There was a minority of abusers. This is difficult for the child, now asult who had their childhood stolen, but the abusers were in a minority. Well done and keep up this important and insightful work. You do the Church a great service by being a physical reminder of what a good and holy thing it is to be a priest.

I'm through supporting the Church on this, I have my own good name to preserve.
I will say Barry Andrews, that bloodless politician, himself said everyone knew there were certain priests to avoid while he was at Blackrock. If he knew in the Eighties then so did his father, a government minister at the time. My disgust is from the likes of the Andrews dynasty who got what they needed from the institution while the vulnerable children were sacrificed. Nobody was going to put a finger on a son of David Andrews. I always had David Andrews down as a pompous ass but I wouldn't have dreamed he was turning a blind eye to child rape.

God will reward you Father for clearly stating Roman Catholic Teaching on Infanticide.
I was educated by the Presentation Brothers. It was more lay teachers who tended to dish out Corporal Punishment than the Brothers. That said it was neither arbitrary nor excessive. The state is also culpable.
My experience of the Brothers themselves was 100% positive. (I am speaking of one community in Ireland ROI and one in England).
Thanks to the Brothers, I got an excellent grounding in my faith: from Cardinal Heenan's Westminster Penny Catechism and from St. Pius V's Roman Catechism.
I obtained the entry points needed to study engineering and to subsequently graduate.
Back in the day, I suspect it was a case that lay people and society couldn't care less about Children being battered. See no evil etc
In an analogous manner, our Bishops with courageous exceptions (Bishops Schneider and Strickland) don't call out what is at the very least, a clear case of Papal Material Heresy, regarding ' Salus Extra Ecclesiam non est '. Also unrepentant adulterers under the Blasphemous Amoris Laetitia ch 8 pastoral guidelines, being allowed to receive Holy Communion.
Our Irish Hierarchy are a sad case in point. Silence betokens Consent.
Fiducia Supplicans is directly repugnant to the most Holy Trinity. When a Priest Blesses an unrepentant Sodomite or Adultererous Couple, he mocks God and incurs his Divine Wrath. Fiducia Supplicans IS NOT FROM THE HOLY GHOST. See Galations 1:8 "But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach a gospel to you besides that which we have preached to you, let him be anathema".
Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us and the Irish and English Bishops.

Thank you for this Father. My own experience is as follows and may be useful to understand the context of the times. As a child in National (primary) school in the early to mid 80s I witnessed the most horrendous physical and mental abuse by two lay married female teachers. It still affects me 40 years later and, sadly, some of my classmates directly in the firing line of the abuse have since taken their own lives. Secondary school was a school run by the Presentation Order and it was a blessed relief. The nuns were strict, yes, but were kind when it was needed and, most importantly, treated the girls in the school with the utmost dignity and respect. I remember when I was in primary school asking my mother and father why they would not complain about our treatment. Their response "That's not the done thing, we can't take on the teachers". There was a deference across Irish society at the time towards certain"esteemed" people and professions. The priest was included in this of course but so was the local teacher, the guard, the doctor, etc. Anyone seen as more educated and more of a "good standing" was untouchable. So Irish people may look at themselves first when looking for someone to blame for the terrible things done to children in our schools. The Church was only a small part of it, but is a convenient scapegoat for modern Ireland, an Ireland that seeks to denigrate religion while elevating progressive new ideas in the hopeless pursuit of creating a human utopia. Thanks again for tackling the hard issues Father and God bless.

It’s tragic and sad but I don’t understand why the Catholic Church is being blamed. It was carried out and covered up by sick individuals across society and schools. Pity the abused children couldn’t tell their parents at the time. I expect they didn’t have the words, God love them. In Ireland I have heard over and over apologies being given by Bishops, Priests and those leaders of the Catholic Church. It’s something that will continue to be brought up forever, especially by those that hate the Church and want to bring it down. This conversation can never go away. But remember it’s Jesus we follow and His Church and we know satan has infiltrated hearts and minds, that’s why abortion and sexual abuse is present in society. Please think about now, little children are being trafficked for all horrific abuses. That’s happening now, and again it’s being allowed across the world and especially in America. No lessons learned. God have MERCY. VIVA CRISTO REY

The greatest sinners are also the ones who judge the harshest in my experience. I grew up as a girl around priests. My experience was that these were the only men in a society that treated females as second class , these men treated me as a human being and with great love and kindness. I’m a Belfast Catholic and know many Protestants (some are family members) there was rampant abuse in the Protestant churches to but not a word said in the MSM. My guess is that the Catholic Church was attacked more so because it had so much power. It had to be broken by those who were on the power train. This was the way to do it. Protestants weren’t important enough to them.

I don’t know where you’re going with that comment, to me it feels like a dig at Protestants.
Here in the South, there’s a distinct lack of abuse by those connected to the Protestant Church and schools. I’m also very much pro-life. There’s a great deal to be said for the quiet (and much maligned) Protestants of Southern Ireland.

    • @finolaomurchu8217
      @finolaomurchu8217 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think it goes across the board abuse. It's probably more there was a powerful organisation that the MSM had to besmirch. And Catholicism got it in the neck. Then instead of reprimanding an abusive priest, he'd be sent to a different parish. And more damage would be done. @H-nx8wr

    • @GremlinsAndGnomes
      @GremlinsAndGnomes หลายเดือนก่อน

@@H-nx8wr I personally would distinguish between Protestants as Christians and Protestants as an institution. This is what I mean. I live in the States where most people are Protestant. I believe that Christ meant for his Church to be singular, apostolic, episcopal, and sacramental. I believe that Jesus Christ is present in the Most Blessed Sacrament, which is why I'm a Latin Christian. All that said, I don't mind our Protestant brethren. It's very normal to meet good people who love Christ, love their neighbor, and live piously. The Protestant movement has produced many loving ane pious Christians that are a blessing to their community. Institutionally, Protestantism is weak. Make what you will of the Five Solas, but many temporal rulers embraced the Reformation as a means to break the power of the universal church and make it more subject to temporal authorities. With the advent of religious freedom and dissenters, the number of institutional churches rapidly proliferated in the United States. The Protestant churches here regularily split over moral questions, with half taking the side of our intelligentsia, and half taking the side of God. America's secularists have a special disdain for the Latin Church because it has a global spread and despite the many Catholics who personally believe in abortion, divorce, universalism, Arianism, etc, there is no method to break the Church in half en masse as there is with the Lutherans, Methodists, Baptists, and Presbyterians. That's my take: many good and bad Christians in both churches but secular elites despise the Latin Church for its institutional strength.

I remember being a first or maybe second year student in a Catholic Church run school and the class being shown slides of the results of abortions and the various methods used, in minute detail. Also followed up in classroom lectures. It was 1974 to 1975. The trauma was severe at the time.

Hi Father, as everyone already knows all forms of abuse are active in every part of society. What you are saying is 100% true. Certain parts of society need to take the plank out of their own eye first. Everyone should know especially a Catholic country such as Ireland, that Christ who is perfect is the Head of the Church we are the body which is imperfect and only through Christ do we become perfect and none of this abuse would exist, now wouldn't that be grand. A righteous society should judge the individual or individuals involved not the church as a whole, just like the judge other individuals who are part of other trusted organisation in our society individually and not their organisation as a whole. God Bless you Father.

I’ll never forget the day that I saw a pro life display at a Catholic youth conference in the US.
There were four little anatomically correct baby dolls each nestled into a basket.
Each correctly sized and formed at 8 weeks, 12 weeks, 18 weeks, and 22 weeks. People scream and look away at pictures of aborted children, but once you see what a human being truly looks like before birth, it’s impossible to deny. Thank you for your wisdom, Father.

I thought the Archbishop of Dublin made a good statement on the recent scoping report on abuse in schools run by religious orders. It is on the Dublin arch diocese website. The thing I never could understand is why men and women of God like priests , nuns , christian brothers could be so cruel to young people and children. I could understand it as a one off event in a classroom but the relentlessness of it defies belief. How can you do that to a child. And secondly, if you become aware of it, how could you turn a blind eye to it. And these are the same people who thought the word of God and Jesus. Defies belief.

My Dad went to the Christian brothers school in Tipperary, they were hammered and abused especially if you were poor. His father was a plough man and War of Independence veteran. He got a tap on the shoulder in 5th class, the brother tapped him on the shoulder and told him he'll never make anything of himself. He's 85 now and hardly able to read and write but he was in the Irish Army, 6 months in the Congo, worked in England in the 60s, worked in Silvermines drilling and blasting, lorry driver, block layer and plasterer, marred, 6 kids and 7 grandchildren. Not bad for a fella that wouldn't make anything of himself and still has his faith and says prayers at night, he suffers PTSD from Congo. I remember going to primary school in the 70s, the religion was drilled into us and got the cane, knuckles and blackboard dusters flung at us. No wonder people haven't gone near religion in years.

It’s funny how we think we’re a kinder more compassionate society now while pointing out smugly all the horrific abuses of Old Ireland. Progressive Ireland would never be so cruel… As a parent of five young boys, I feel I have more to shield them from now than ever. The HSE are continually in the courts (and only a minority of the cases make it that far), sports clubs and many organisations are rife with similar abuses. The revelations about a lot of preachy Hollywood actors are sickening… the very ones who tut at us while accepting awards and accolades. Those who are tutting at the Church want to bring in euthanasia, promote abortion and want to increase its access, they are promoting trans ideology and gender affirming “healthcare”. This abuse is not exclusively a Church problem and we need to stop looking at it as such. The Church can only continue to be more proactive in implementing safeguards and in dealing with these abuses and trying to bring about peace and healing for those involved. Abusers are in every walk of life. We can’t make it easy for them.
Humans, all of us sin. We have fallen and it can be terrible. We need to repent and ask for forgiveness. We need to trust in God’s mercy.

Commentaries on various Catholic issues come from two different sources. Those who have the best interests of the Catholic Church in mind and those who's only reason for their commentary is with the aim of destroying the Catholic Church.
We need to constantly call out the latter group for what they are.

Here's me, educated in the late 60's by mainly priests in a rural-based boarding school where there was no abuse. But I would be very happy if every Bishop on the island were to resign en masse voluntarily and effectively, immediately forceing the Vatican to appoint new bishops from the present stock. We're really sick of the ongoing, never-ending victim disclosures (justified in the main) and ad nauseam hollow-sounding apologies from Bishops. We need to start again. So please, will ye all just go and let us Catholics refocus on Christ.

The crux of the problem is that csa usually goes unreported for fear of recriminations, women’s sa the same plus the fear and stain of pregnancy complicating outside relationships and social standing The church demonised the vulnerable enough in the old days and the community followed suit. Whether the church committed the sa or not, they must also reflect of the further abuse they inflicted on the already victimised. You speak of abortion being murder, not to be taken lightly. Neither is pregnancy, those nine months are a fragile time for both mother and child. unless you yourself have experienced sa, you would not know how much the experience murders your soul. But then according to your decree, EVERY child is born of original sin.

@@CynthiaToni Fair point Cynthia. I was on my phone and in a rush. Formerly I couldn't wait for Fr's next post. His insights were so deep and well put, and certainly helped me grow as a Catholic. So much so I felt called to send some donations to Immaculata productions. However, it seems Fr. is taking the post in a more secular and cultural direction, even though we say the sign of the cross in the beginning - its not a homily anymore - its a commentary on our fallen culture. My point is we have no shortage of moral outrage all over the internet on these cultural topics, and Fr. is not adding anything new to the debate there. Maybe these issues are big in Ireland and as an internet pastor of Irish people he feels he has to comment. But look at the last few posts: Pope controversy, racists? some book culture problem, Joe Biden, Immigration, Olympics. He has the right to take the posts in any direction he wants. But for those of us that were coming to be spiritually fed in that brilliant way of his, we are being shown the door.

I have to say as a regular follower of Fr. Kilcoyne’s I’m quite frustrated by this podcast. 14 mins of saying next to nothing of substance on the issue. I am adamantly pro-life but I don’t appreciate muddying the waters and cross contaminating speaking about 2 very separate issues.
The rape of children by clergy is the ultimate moral betrayal of the laity in this country. What does he think is adequate punishment both within the church and by civil authorities?
I would like to hear his thoughts on how someone acting in persona Christi who commits these acts is able to consecrate anything or forgive sin?
Similarly what should happen to the Bishops who moved paedophiles around - can they be stripped of their titles after death?
A lot more to be discussed which I appreciate he mentioned but I’d appreciate no more cross contamination on this issue. If it’s going to be sorted so that catholic laity can openly speak with priests again it needs to be cut out with specificity and accuracy as a surgeon’s blade removes a tumour.

The Catholic church are welcome to talk about abortion. In reality, the termination of pregnancy has saved the lives of some mothers. I don't believe in abortion for up to nine months for disabled children, but different for non-disabled. Abortions will be reduced with better neo and post natal care, along with reduction in poverty
