Thanks to your boyfriend for recommending you to react to SOAD. I definitely understand your feeling that you're not quite used to or ready for this kind of music because it's definitely way more out of left field than what a lot of people would typically be exposed to, but shoutout to you for finding stuff to appreciate and being honest. I hope you never feel pressured to like something just because of anyone watching. SOAD is one of my favourite bands ever, and they had already broken up by the time I started getting into metal but they were very formative for my musical taste. You're right that they're very weird and that's a big part of what so many people fell in love with for them, it also launched them to superstardom because pretty much no band before, during or after sounded like them. Their vocalist Serj has one of the most unique voices in all of rock music.
As for recommendations; I see people recommending Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and I agree that they're a great natural progression from what you've listened to already, but I think Motorhead should also be an option! Even though Priest had been around since the 70s, they didn't really explode until the 80s alongside bands like Maiden. But Motorhead kind of came in between the Deep Purple/Black Sabbath era, and the NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) era of 80s Maiden and Priest. Motorhead really kept the rock n roll spirit of metal alive and were one of the first bands to fuse metal with punk rock, which is very different from the majority of NWOBHM bands who were starting to get further from the blues-y origins of metal. So yea definitely NWOBHM bands but I also very much recommend Motorhead (especially Ace of Spades).

8:09 It's my favorite SOAD song too!
8:59 I could be wrong but I think it's a song about Los Angeles, and the toxicity of that city. I think the part where he says "eating seeds as a pastime activity" is a metaphor for how young people (the seeds) get used there, particularly in Hollywood. Another (very different) song I really like about that topic is 'Heartattack and Vine', by Tom Waits.

I love System of a Down... They have an Armenian heritage, which shows in their music (the polka influences) and their lyrics (the Armenian Genocide has informed some of their songwriting, and I think that leads into their general feelings about authority figures). Their second album (Toxicity) is probably my favourite - I had it on repeat in my car for a few months, back in the day...
As for what next... if you go back to the 70s... You might like some Thin Lizzy or maybe Diamond Head (Lightning to the Nations, Am I Evil, Canterbury) or Budgie (Breadfan, Baby Please Don’t Go, Zoom Club, Slipaway - I love all their early stuff, though), Iggy and the Stooges (Raw Power, I Wanna Be Your Dog), maybe Mountain(Mississippi Queen, Nantucket Sleighride, Theme for an Imaginary Western), some mid 70s Hawkwind, maybe even some Motörhead... So many bands, so much good music... Even though I’ve been listening to 70s music (as well as more modern stuff!) for the best part of 40 years, there’s still so much of it I’m unfamiliar with...

System of a Down is very much a gateway "heavy" band -- louder and heavier than the average rock band to get radio play, but light on instrumental sections, experimental enough to make people go "oh, a metal(-adjacent) band can [use an accordion/shift into a "la-la-la" section/do two-voice harmonies, etc.]?", and consistently catchy with both the vocal and musical hooks. Outside of Faith No More and Deftones, and maybe one or two others, most bands to be slapped with the nu-metal label has always gotten a ton of flack from diehard metalheads who didn't consider the non-riffy/non-solo-y mainstream stuff to be related to their genre of choice. SoaD hasn't been immune to that, but they didn't get nearly as much hate as most of their contemporaries since their sound never really overlapped with any of them. Hard to slam a band for being part of a trendy genre when no one else in the scene really shares that much DNA with them, other than being heavy rock bands with catchy choruses and no solos.
As someone who generally prefers their metal without the "nu-" tag, I still think the first couple of System albums are pretty nifty, and probably the most interesting stuff to happen in the scene in the early 2000s. The guitarist seemed increasingly insistent on being not just a guitarist who'd occasionally chime in on vocals, but the guitarist AND co-lead singer, and that wasn't to the band's benefit, IMO. Regardless, they're a cool one to check out because of the insane amount of non-rock/metal people their radio play no doubt turned into rockers and metalheads.

Also in case you don't know the band are of Armenian heritage so some of the influences and melodies have that part of their growing up. Lyrically they are very political as you noticed with anti-war songs, protest tracks about criminalisation of folks for drug use and the Armenian genocide at the time of World War 1.
"Toxicity" according to one band member is about living with ADHD.
They are (or were as I don't think they are together these days) a fab live band with plenty of energy onstage. SOAD are almost impossible to categorise I would say as they have so many styles to what they do. I call them prog as I believe they are inventive and keep changing the music around. They are also damn fine players.
    Enjoyed your reaction as always.

I've only watched a couple of your videos, but I saw your playlist on your channel, I would recommend that you listen to PIXIES (first 3 albums, choose the songs by the titles, they are all equally good.) They were the only band in the '80's that had a fresh, heavy sound and also spawned the whole grunge genre. LIkewise I would advise you to do a couple of reaction vid's to TOOL (one on the first couple of albums and their 'Opiate" E.P. And one on their later stuff beginning with the phase begun by their 'Lateralus' album. Take recommendations on song titles, as they track their strange 'concept' songs as full tracks. (Oh, and The Damned's 'New Rose' was released just after Ramones 'Blitzkrieg Bop' but is generally accepted as the "first punk single' Due to the fact that the term punk was only introduced after The Damned first single)) I came to this one after watching your first 'Punk' reaction vid, and the people telling you to check out 'Dead Kennedy's' and 'The Sex Pistols' are completely right! probably the two best Punk bands from the U.S. and U.K. respectively! (although Ireland's 'Stiff Little Fingers' are also immortal punk icons!) Happy Travels!

I love the more out there stuff like SOAD, Mr. Bungle and Poppy.... But that's a huge leap from the classic 70s and Dio lol, Maybe try some Led Zeppelin, early Queen ( their first 3 albums are pretty heavy for the time), Ghost or even Kiss next, then slowly work your way up the the heavier stuff as you become more intrigued and familiar with the Metal genre. 50 plus years of Metal you have a lot of great stuff ahead of you to discover.

Id suggest *Megadeth*, they are the god fathers of thrash metal, and are respected by metal fans all over the wold.
    Songs:
    Holy wars... the punishment due . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . -(Rust in pice)
    Pice sells. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . -(Pice sells... But who's buying)
    Tornado of souls . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . -(Rust in pice)
    Symphony of destruction . . . . . . . . . . . . -(Countdown to extinction)
"Rust in pice" is just a perfect album, if you need an album reaction.

Always end up saying it but Opeth would be great. Blackwater Park, The Drapery Falls, The Godheads Lament, Demon of the Fall, Ghost of Perdition, Deliverance, Windowpane, Harvest, and well way too many other great songs. Also with System of a Down I hope you listen to Aerials soon, for me thats their best one.

Metal was created in the UK in the late 60's/first 70's (Black Sabbath), then went to the US, then came the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) and relauched the genre (Rainbow, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest) in the late 70's/80's... and then came the 90's, when metal had it's own sound. The problem was that there was the risk of becoming something boring, so the artists started to mix it with other sounds, creating new subgenres. That's how nu metal was created, mixing it with hip hop, alternative rock, funk, industrial, and grunge.
SOAD is a great example of nu metal, and if you want to react to another one, try Rage Against The Machine, with songs like Killing In The Name, Know Your Enemy, Bulls On Parade or Wake Up.

never was the biggest System fan, but I genuinely like a few of their songs (like those shown here) and I really appreciate their musicianship and progressive approach to music. But their music was always a bit too eclectic and 'busy' for my taste. Still, great band.

Chop Suey is about suicide. At first, they wanted to have the word suicide in the title, but the disk company wanted it censured. so they chopped suicide out of the tittle, so the title chop suicide, so chop suey...
And yeah, SOAD is a band known for its various political stances. They are from Armenian origins, and the song "system of a down", from which they're named is about the Armenian genocide.
And yeah, there's plenty going on in their songs. A great band.
