When the Volkswagen Golf Mk5 R32 debuted, the narrow-angle VR6 motor pretty much became an instant legend. With 182kW from the factory, in today's terms that's now GTI power, but back then it represented the most powerful Golf money could buy, and of course it was naturally aspirated, which naturally meant it was prime for some forced induction.
Jacque De Beer who hails from Gauteng, South Africa, bought this car new and then immediately lost his first race in it. That was all the motivation he needed to build what must be the fastest Golf in the country.
8 clutches, 2 gearboxes and a lot of fuel later, his car now easily runs a 10.3 quarter mile, as if he's just popping down to the shops to get some milk.

Europeans and Americans document their journey on TH-cam and Forums which gives them more exposure. I think we should do the same 🤷🏽♂️
We have a lot of of the cheaper/older heavily modified cars but in Europe USA Japan etc. They doing the same thing except with supercars...
The problem still lies in the budget for us normal guys on the street, since we hav the passion but lack funding
Europeans and Japanese are more exposed to the internet...
I've got a friend that has a stage 3 BMW F30 335i and its properly quick. It does a quarter mile in 11 seconds and can do much better in semi sliks or sliks meaning it can compete with most European tuners. There's an audi TTRS that does a quarter mile in less that 10 seconds.
It can easily show most European tuners flames. We just need more exposure.
Number 5 paved way for all the latest golf's. Respect to the VR6 as well
Number 5 changed the whole Hot-hatch game forever.. I've got mad respek for VW for building that car.
I also own a Golf Mk5, but a TDI 1.9 version.

Very very very impressive. These cars are underrated in SA. Turbocharge it then everything changes :). I have a Golf 3 Vr6 turbo that I’m currently converting to 4wheel drive via an Audi TT gen 2 haldex rear and vr6 synchro gearbox. I cannot wait! Respect to Jacques

I just cant understand why he lost against a GTI, i mean okay maybe the GTI was also tuned but idk.
@@Klausi_92 its simple. The GTI is turbocharged and the R32 is not. Add the high altitude of the Gauteng area (About 5000 ft above sea level) and the 186kw of the R32 quickly drops to around 158kw. So in that case the power to weigh ratio of the GTI becomes better since the R32 is one heavy beast. I have seen many R32's get their ass handed to them by supposedly less powerful cars. Altitude is a bitch for natural aspirated engines.

Very well engineered! Awesome effort, many many hours of blood, sweat and tears.
Personally, I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the Mk4 R32. Mk5 is obviously 🔥 too, but something about the lines of the Mk4 just puts it on another level for me. The Konig seats and manual gearbox option help a bit too lol.

Very nice Mr.. I loved it and all the story of the beginning! I imagine the cylinder head is also upgraded..( From personal experience talking) You can easily Rev it 8.500rpm and on pump gas 100ron+water methanol 3bars of boost.. The nitrous kit will simply make it airborne.. Good luck!

"V" stands for "v-motor" and the "R" stands for "reihenmotor" which means inline motor.
All cylinders are in one cylinder head which makes it inline but the pistons are in a V angle which makes it a V6
