Wow, that says alot. I have the mk4 R32 (tornado red) which I've had for almost 18 years, but the b7 RS4 is a dream car for me (along with many other cars (both euro and Japanese) in my imaginary garage). I would have thought the b7 would have made you forget about the R32, but good to know the old girl can still do it for you. Question: how do they compare, especially handling-wise (I don''t know if you ever go 9/10ths or explore the limits with these cars)? Neither are exactly lightweight. However, I have only heard good things about the b7 Rs4 unlike some other Audi RS models. I often hear that it doesn't typically understeer the way other Audi's do, especially with the rear-biased quattro. Definitely one of the most unique RS Audi's ever. One of the best looking as well (who doesn't love swollen fender flares). Would love an Avant version. Also, how is reliability? I heard maintenance can drain the wallet. And then there's the need to carbon clean...
@@Jeff_F7 how do they compare, it’s a good question. Someone told me before I bought the B7 that it’s twice the power, twice the running costs but not twice the car as the R32 and I would agree with that statement. I think it also very much depends whether you are comparing a well spec’d R32 with a bog standard B7, or whether both have had some subtle mods done to improve power and handling, like both of mine have. The B7 RS4 if not properly maintained like you have indicated can be incredibly down on power. I’ve seen them as low as 330bhp which is crazy for a car that is meant to be 414bhp from factory. Carbon cleaning is essential, as is a stage 2 remap here in the UK to really bring them alive and turn them into the proper RS they should have been from the factory. Mine is running 450bhp it has had a recent carbon clean, stage 2 tune, deflapped manifold, full catless exhaust system and it really is a quick car. It’s much faster than the R32, but I can see how an untuned, carbon’d up example wouldn’t feel much quicker than the R32. The V8 revving to almost 9,000 RPM is intoxicating and just makes you want to keep driving it. The DRC suspension although excellent is very problematic so most including myself swap this out for coilovers. I’m running KW V3’s on the RS4 and Bilstein B14’s on the R32. Both cars handle amazingly. I also have H&R sway bars fitted to both. I absolutely explore the limits of both cars - they are both weekend toys, especially the RS - I wanted it tuned this way as it’s purely for fast road/track and not a daily at all. If I had to say which one handled better I would say the RS although the R32 with the mods I’ve done is incredible. I feel I can drive the R32 on the absolute limit whereas I haven’t reached that in the RS yet. As for RS reliability…. Pretty reliable honestly. As long as you buy one with the big jobs already done or budget for the big jobs. These are: carbon clean, brakes, oil cooler, aux radiator, drc suspension. Once these are addressed, they should in theory be pretty bulletproof and the engines are bulletproof. They are both really special cars, but the B7 is just super iconic. Manual V8, huge flares, bucket seats and flat bottom steering wheel out of a Lamborghini Gallardo, Gallardo brakes too. There’s a reason they are more expensive than the 7 year newer B8 model … I’d like to keep them both forever, but if I had to sell one tomorrow, the R32 would go.
@@JC_46 here I've been debating selling my mk4 R32 (owned for 12 years) for a B7 RS4. we didn't receive the wagon in the US, so I'd replace a nice two-door hot hatch with a sedan to make it easier taking my kid to cars and coffee. I've owned B6 S4 and B7 A4, so I'm reluctant to get back into a B6/B7, but that 8k rpm V8 and manual keep calling my name.
@@RatBustard the MK4 R32 is a really, really special car. Not as good chassis wise as the MK5, but it’s definitely more special. Reminds me of the B7 RS4 in that it’s got big wide arches and looks really mean from both the front and rear. Whereas the MK5 doesn’t look as special, in my opinion. Not sure how much MK4 R32’s are worth in the states assuming that’s where you are, but I know B7 RS4’s are double and even triple in some cases the price of what they are in the UK over there, so it’s whether you can justify it. Also not only didn’t you get wagon’s, you also didn’t get the flat bottom steering wheel or the bucket seats which really do help make the RS4 special IMO. I know lots of guys buy these from Europe and ship them over. Still, no matter how good the R32’s are, you really can’t beat a V8 that revs beyond 8k RPM. If you can keep both, do it. If not, maybe after 12 years it will be a welcome change. As I said in my original post though, the RS4 is twice the cost for parts, running costs and fuel but it’s not twice the car.
@@JC_46 yep, states, so the B7 seats and steering are very underwhelming and would be my first mod, if not already done. mk4 R32's here going way up in value, especially sub 100k mile examples, of which mine is. as RS4's get closer to 100k miles, they get closer to $28-30k USD, so while not cheap, certainly enticing as a near direct price swap with a mk4 R32. but yeah, the brake part cost alone for an RS4 scares me!
I still remember the day I bought it, haven’t event test drove it, dealer start the engine and I already know she was going to be mine. Still own it, 216.000km and little to none issues. It’s a beautiful car, never driven anything else better as a daily.
MKVs do not get as much love as they should. I think the looks still hold up too. I've had mine since new and its such a fun car! I catch myself looking it from different angles every time I walk up to it and I fall in love with it all over again.
I agree, MK5’s are only just now starting to get the love that they deserve. For many, like myself, it’s not the best looker and that’s why it gets overlooked. It doesn’t look very aggressive. But that’s not to say it looks bad. It doesn’t. I prefer the looks of the MK4, but the MK5 upped the game when it comes to handling, by far. And it’s the last to have that sweet VR6.
Also had ours since new, great car - when i am able to drive it. Ours is identical to this one though includes the factory sunroof. While it may be slightly slower, it feels much more planted in the corners than a GTi and still goes like stink, especially in the wet, with the added benefit of being able to cruise comfortably like a GT.
I have 2 mk5 r32 ones very rare only 5000 in the world. The way this car shifts so cleanly and you don’t even feel it is one of the craziest things about this car.

The fuel tank was reduced in size in the mk5 from the mk4 R32. 14.5 gallons compared to the mk4s 16.5 gallons. Same issue with the RS3/TTRS. 14.5 gallon tank is too small for these engines
My friend had a 1.4TSI 160HP mk5 Golf and it was also chugging fuel like crazy. He lent me it for a week when he went on a vacation with his family and I absolutely hates the fuel economy on that. True mk4 golf's were solid rear axle, but the mk4 R32 was independent rear. Also, as an R32 owner, wow pleasantly surprised to hear Misha mention lift-off oversteer (4:35) in an AWD haldex R32.
i had a golf 6 R and it was a lot of fun on the Nordschleife. After it I got an Audi RS3 which was pure rubbish. Golfs are really good cars. just love for them. My first car was a golf 5 1.6 gt sport. Good start for the Nordschleife. Was not fast but I learned about the ring.

The best thing, they have their factory claimed power in real. Halle77 had a lot of R32 on their Dyno, and if they are in good condition- no problem with the ignition, or intake or something else - they had their 250 ps. Also engines with more than 150.000 km. Unfortunately a lot of R32 where upgraded with turbo kits, or their Block was used for turbo Projects up to morethan 1000 ps. That’s one reason that it would be difficult to find an original R32.
They only have a few versions in simple terms. Both MK4 and MK5 use the DQ250. The others are DQ200 dry clutch used in like 1.4 TSI etc, DQ500 used in RS3 / Tiguan, and DQ380/381 used in MK7.5 Golf R etc. But there are heaps of different mechatronics, gear ratios, etc. So the mechatronic in a late model DQ250 like in MK7 R is much improved over 2004 TT
Yes I know that but there is a clear difference in mechatronics between the mk4 R32 DQ250 and the mk5 R32 version. Not to mention the mk5 R32 version went to using a canbus system instead of using the mk4 R32’s version of being wired straight to the controller
@@trozio1 No, both MK4 and MK5 use can bus. I’m not sure what you mean by wired straight to the controller but the engine ECU in MK4 & 5 R32 is essentially the same, Bosch ME 7.1.1. Yes, probably mechatronics used in Mk5 will be a few revisions newer, especially in later models, but not sure what the clear difference you speak of is.
@@coreyw427 What I mean is that the early version of the DSG used analog inputs to determine things like speed, shift paddle position, reverse light control, etc. When the mk5 R32 came out all of this was revised to no longer use these analog inputs. I’m not sure what you are arguing here. My comment was simply that they are two different generations of the DQ250 DSG separated by clear enhancements made to the TCU, mechatronics, wiring, etc as a result of VAG products becoming more sophisticated. In other words: the 1st generation DSG was offered in the mk4 R32. The mk5 R32 was the 2nd gen DSG
wow this thing is a real gas guzzler. it consumed 1/4 of it's fuel tank and traveled a distance of only 18km. i think that's the main reason vw abolished them .they tuned the 2.0t and reached the same power output comparable to the r32 but with much better fuel efficiency.
I’ve been looking for a r32 the last 6 months and here in sweden you can still get a high mileage mk5 for just under 10k € but nice low mileage ones goes for around 15k up to just over 20k € for a 3 door 6mt. A mk4 is impossible to find under 22k € 😓
Nooo not the TopGear "Torsion Beam rear axles cause understeer"! Clarkson lied! The front suspension on the Golf 4 was just really bad, much better on the 5! And you can also upgrade to some nicer TT front suspension parts to be extra fancy 😉

Its a small (big) price to pay for such a cool car definitely worth the bad mpgs hahahaha
Also possible install LPG for driving green and cheap 😅
I had a Sharan VR6 manual. When you closed your eyes as a passenger, it sounded and felt so fast. But the picture, when you open your eyes, didn't fit at all ;-)
This is one of my favourite cars and if not like a dream car project, Thanks for giving us this experience Misha ❤
True mk4 golf's were solid rear axle, but the mk4 R32 was independent rear. Also, as an R32 owner, wow pleasantly surprised to hear Misha mention lift-off oversteer (4:35) in an AWD haldex R32.
All haldex cars will oversteer on lift off if you're commited enough, and if you pin the throttle immediately after they'll hold the slip angle
Nice seeing an R32 in the channel Misha! Happy to own one!
i had a golf 6 R and it was a lot of fun on the Nordschleife. After it I got an Audi RS3 which was pure rubbish. Golfs are really good cars. just love for them. My first car was a golf 5 1.6 gt sport. Good start for the Nordschleife. Was not fast but I learned about the ring.
What was so rubbish about the RS3?
My dream car atm! Love how it sounds. And even the suspension after 20 years on my Mk5 fsi is great aswell!
people hate on the mkv for its looks but they got the best steering feedback of any golf
Bro you are at 1.25M now? WTF? It's the offseason! lmao congrats so much. I've been rooting for you for a long time now and it's great to see it finally blow up. Incredible.
Very nice, was like you Misha, not expecting how it handled like it did, fantastic lap!
I love this car so much, thanks Misha and owner
The fact that these were made to rival gt cars and go this quick speaks volumes. Want fuel economy get a diesel, want fun you’re in the right place 👌
Hi Misha. What is the best choice for you in terms of sound, handling and power: gta 147 or MK5 R32?
17 y.o car still has better quality everywhere than anything new
It’s amazing how fast that fuel gauge drops
Had mine from new for 17 years. I sold it last year and I miss it a lot. I don't miss the fan (fuel gauge) hahahah
I own a R36 and I get ohh you have a Skyline and I’m like no not a riceburner. I love the car and even though heavy the sound is amazing from the VR6..
I put the R32 Golf drivetrain (but manual) in my 7 seater Touran 😀 3.2 VR6, 6 speed manual and 4motion 4WD. Good, "sensible" family car. It'd be hilarious to see it doing this around the 'ring 🤣 ... but, alas, it's here in NZ.
Aside from the brake performance, it does look like smooth sailing with that car ⛵, just cruising with speed. Very nice.
I don't understand why a lot of golf owners remove the rear wiper, it makes zero sense.
Rust and issues
Ive had "only" the Golf V GT as my Daily and first car for the last 8 years and its really fun to drive, def sad to see it go :)
That fuel gauge nice add and its spot on! this boy is thirsty, i know i have one.
Damn, one lap drank 1/4 of the tank
That vr6 is the best wag engine ever IMHO, compared to that the 2.0 tfsi was quite the POS
These things can fly when you add a turbo kit to them
everything can do that if you put turbo on it
Sacrilege. Leave them NA ffs
@@eponymous7910 haahah you sound like my father with his Golf 4 VR6. After 200k miles he's finally going to put an exhaust on it LOL
@@P33CEGAWD that’s the 2.8 right? Quite a rare car those now!
@@TopiT23 everything cant do 600 hp with a headgasket spacer tho
Just to clarify the mk5 R32 has the 2nd generation DSG. The 1st gen came in the mk4 R32
Then there are also the longitudinal versions of course
The mk5 R32 was the 2nd gen DSG
golf 5 had a great suspension system
The fuel gauge from the start of the lap till the end!
3:49 superb braking zone face Misha 👌
1/4 tank = 1 lap. Quite the fuel consumption.
V6 are thursty
to be fair one lap is like 12 miles of wide open driving and they only had a 14.5 gallon tank
wow this thing is a real gas guzzler. it consumed 1/4 of it's fuel tank and traveled a distance of only 18km.
i think that's the main reason vw abolished them .they tuned the 2.0t and reached the same power output comparable to the r32 but with much better fuel efficiency.
And a considerably less emotive engine that sounds like wet fart that only an owner could love.
I’ve been looking for a r32 the last 6 months and here in sweden you can still get a high mileage mk5 for just under 10k € but nice low mileage ones goes for around 15k up to just over 20k € for a 3 door 6mt.
A mk4 is impossible to find under 22k € 😓
Misha have you driven a Focus RS Mk2? Need to see this! This Golf looked surprisingly good though 👍🏻
Nooo not the TopGear "Torsion Beam rear axles cause understeer"! Clarkson lied!
The front suspension on the Golf 4 was just really bad, much better on the 5!
And you can also upgrade to some nicer TT front suspension parts to be extra fancy 😉
Gracias Misha x tanto .. tengo un golf ❤mk4 tdi igual al que tenías 😂 hasta el color y me trajo recuerdos.. desde argentina saludos y exitos
vr6 is so awesome.
You also driven my Golf 5 2.0 FSI with me and my little brother 2 years ago or so 😊
Ofcourse this one is a bit more powerful 😂
Still got an MG ZR for you to try out in this season 😉
An MG ZR. That would be interesting to see.
Awesome video; I also have one, silver from South Africa. One question, how come this one didn't go beyond 210? My gauge has gone around 290km/h. Is it a speed limiter in Europe?
So satisfying to watch
I really miss VW cars! Still striving to at least get one.😊😊😊😊
First edition DSG was MK4 R32 Golf
Something about V6's they ALWAYS Sound good :-)
geiler Sound best golf R32
Wow nice, reminds me of a friend’s R reg purple 2.8 12v vr6 golf many years back 1999 I think, felt torque as fk
1/4 of a tank used in 13 miles, r32 life baby
Probably been said a thousand times but the MK4 R32 has independent rear as well.
I wonder how this compares to A3 3.2
I like more the look of my 2004. R32 red .plus mime is manual shift .that to me is more fun to drive ( but of course is my personal opinion) since I have only been driving only manual since 18 years old and at 68 iam not go to change my driving stile😂😂😂😂😂😂 the r32 aren't the fast cars out there, but very fan to drive ,IS A DRIVER CAR,PERIOD!!!
Love watching the fuel gauge plummet after 1 Lap 😂😂 lovely car though
This thing absolutely guzzles gas faster than cake at a diet program
the sound is worth it
Always a solid video! But MkIV R32 wasn’t a fixed axle either.
Als Misha nu al Enthousiast is, upgrade de remmen evt. met een cooling upgrade en je kan echt van kiet
Sound like a GTR.👍
I've just witnessed 1/4 tank dissapear for a lap. Holy moly. This is as bad as my passat.
@Misha Charoudin how does it overall compare to the R36 Passat?
Cruise control activated 😇
La Mia è turbo ma a volte rimpiango il lento motore aspirato,si è lento ma con delle buone camme è più che soddisfacente e il sound unico nel Suo genere
You could see the fuel needle moving as you got on the throttle 😅
Definitely smiles per gallon 😂
How bad on fuel are these cars btw? You hear sooooo many mixed reviews on them. Some saying they aren’t any worse than a mk5 gti and others saying for the power output they’re really bad
So ironic that North America did not get a manual MK5, but North America is the ONLY place you can get a manual MK8… 😢
I love these cars i need to get before they keep going up and out of my price range
Love the V6 soundtrack.
1/4 of a tank per lap 😂💪🏼
Miss mine. Drive one with a Turbo.
