OMG!!! This was my favorite toy growing up - it was a hand-me-down that my grandparents kept from when my mom was a kid. This was as important to my mental growth as Mr. Wizard and I have longed for years to own one again with all the 8-trk carts I had then. This project hits so close to my heart - I can't thank you enough for posting this!
I have one of the 90s 2XLs on my workbench right now for a Raspberry Pi DIY Alexa project. I was planning on using it as just a shell, but I may have to change that after seeing your use of the LEDs and original voice.
Built this project, however, the volume is way low. If I turn up the potentiometer on the wave shield a hum becomes very pronounced and the volume of the echo is still very low. Any suggestions?
Had to google to see what a 2-XL is. I had one, but it was the later Tomy cassette tape version. After further looking, now I want to find a Tomy Mr D.J. to convert to a bluetooth speaker
Drop a hint that people can subscribe to the Collin's Lab playlist. Adafruit has too much going on for one channel IMO, and most people don't realize they can sub to playlists w/notifications. Just sayin I love awkward genius Collin.
Oh, c'mon! You're teasing us by not posting a tutorial so we can duplicate this brilliant idea! Also, is there no way to fit the Echo inside the 2-XL chassis?
freaking love collin's lab videos.

The intro reminded me of an old twilight Zone episode, awesome!

Everytime deadlines come, I sit still and watch Collin's videos! xD
I was friends with a kid who had a 2-XL. The darn thing played 8-track tapes!!
Yeah, there was also a more modern version in the 90's that played cassettes.
