Infrared light may be invisible to the human eye - but it's usefulness in the world of electronics is easy to see. IR emitters & detectors can be used in a variety of different ways - most of us use them for wireless communication everyday.

Just to put this out there, the word infrared comes from the latin prefix "infra-" meaning below and "red" which is at the end of the visible light spectrum. So infrared is the invisible spectrum that is contiguous to the red end of the visible spectrum.

Cameras can indeed pick up infrared light and present it as white or purple because the LCD displays don't have a infrared output. So they try to produce the color they see with colors that exist in the display (RGB).

So it's the electro-magnetic waves sending the information from my remote control to my T.V. The phototransistors in the cameras detect the electro-magnetic waves and that's why camera detect infrared light and that's how the motion detecting devices on the wall in schools and offices and the motion detecting hand driers. Wow! It wasn't a bad thing to learn about advanced electronics and circuitry! I really find it amazing!

@YoWooDDecks Look up the output curves (light output vs frequency) in the factory data sheet to see if a given LED will put out IR.

@FlyHighRC386 I'm guessing a heat seeking missile would have a series of sensors on it. When it's target changes direction each sensor would read a different amount of IR and the goal of the Missile would to always have all IR signals the same so it would probably adjust it's fins until the signal is equal of all sensors (facing it's target) pretty simple stuff. Look up a Solar Panel tracking system, it probably uses something similar to that.

Geek-a-lots, you might like "freetrack" (google), (free software foundation) head tracking software that uses your webcam to track 3 IR Leds (for instance, mounted on a head mic &/or ear phones) to track your head position.
Great for 3d racing games etc as you can look around in 3d.. although you still have to look at the monitor.
If you have a good Gfx card (nvidia red cyan is pretty good, if you can't afford a 3d monitor).. then you can Geek-a-lot in VR too.
