I have a family that brings their young to me every time they hatch so far for the last 20 + years and now I feed at least 30/40 birds every day ! .. I love them and when they all sing it's incredible.

I think they are very attractive birds - we don't have magpies here in New York, but our corvids are common North American crows and show equally high intelligence (some of the highest in the entire animal kingdom). We started feeding one adult crow as an experiment a few months ago and it was extremely timid, wouldn't come within about 50 feet of any of us and got spooked easily. Now, it has spread the word and brings 8 other crows along literally every day - most of them will come right up to us and take food out of our hands like your magpies do. It's such an awesome feeling

Can so relate to this - we have a magpie family, too. When he first arrived Baby was not allowed to take food from our fingers, it had to be offered by mum. Baby now comes in and yells for supper whenever he wants, and nips fingers if it is not offered fast enough!

Same at my end. I get them all, the good, the bad and the ugly. But there are also cowards and friendlies. Top coward is Tilly the male who thinks he's the boss at 16 y/o. The singer is Peppy, the matron and wife of Tilly, who sings and waits for a meal. Limpy the screamer, always begs her mother for food. Other sons and daughters join in the chorus like Altar boys singing. Still, they are my friends of at least 17/18 years.

I'm in Aotearoa New Zealand and we have magpies over here. I love them so much! I live on the edge of the Red Zone reserve in ChCh. It's a vast green space created after the earthquakes. Rebuilding housing there is not possible because the land is too unstable. Birdlife is abundant and we have a magpie family who spend a lot of time in our back garden. Juveniles pester mum and dad just like this. When they've had a snack they sit in our apricot tree and groom and chitter-chatter to one another. It's such a sound of contentment - they are just delightful birds!

Because our wildlife carers take in so many young birds you may get a visit from a kookaburra. Blue or Brown they cackle to get attention, and I have had one land outside the door and ask for food, I dutifully placed some meat on the railing. Cheeky bird refused to pick it up, he opened his beak wide and asked me to drop it in - yes, I did!

Just be aware if you go hiking on east coast in forest/hills, Some bird noises may not be coming from the bird you think it is! ;)
We have the amazing Lyrebird as well, Not only does it imitate other birds but chainsaws, car alarms, sirens, dog barking, mobile phone ringer and nearly everything it hears. lol

Maggie's don't beg. Mine are more reluctant than the butchers. The BB will come when I whistle and bang there plate. The Maggie's occasionally muscle in. The baby birds of each all squawk for food but Id hardly call it begging. A BB has come up behind me as I write. Cutest thing and every morning from 5:30 they call me out for food. What do you feed yours? I give mine cat grade mince which they like the best. It was dog biscuits that they first arrived for, stealing left overs. I looked up feeding them and this PhD guy said feeding wild birds can be really good.

I just keep a small natural garden compost patch of leaves and small, offcuts in a pile, a bit of grass clippings, about a mower catcher wide, and when the magpies come and sing out, I might hose it down a bit in dry weather so the worms and things come more to the surface where magpies can get more food, and interact with us as well. They like digging there in the garden where its moist and breaking down vegetation. A decent sized tub of water is something they love too and will call out for it on a hot day. Something about 45cm wide and 15cm or so deep is a good guide. They also like toys like a furry tennis ball, check out the video of ' woman who gives toys to magpies' , its so uplifting.

Magpies have a lean diet so feeding them processed food (mince, bread etc) is not good for them. Feed them beetles, grasshoppers, earthworms etc which is a more healthier diet.

Please don't feed them mince or muscle meat. It has no calcium in it, unlike insects. The parents feed mince to their babies and the baby's bones don't develop and they die.
Suitable feed: 2 cups rolled oats: One tin of sardines in water, not oil or brine; a tablespoon of peanut butter to glue it all together. Rev in a blender with a little water to make a paste that is crumbly but sticks together when you squeeze it. Squash into little logs five or so centimetres long, wrap each log in clingwrap and freeze. Keep in the fridge after defrosting. Put in bin if it shows signs of mould. It lasts 3 or so days, so each little log should be no more that you can give them in 2 days. The sardines have edible bones.
