All you guys having issues with latency and delay when playing with BSP... Transport - sync - remote In /out Transport is start stop, so if you want your BSP to start ableton... -set it as in the video, but you need to check transport and sync buttons... I have Trigger Finger Pro, which is similar midi seq device. To make it play in sync with ableton, I had to put minus latency (a bit higher then my soundcard latency) on Mackie input port... Easy way how to monitor if it's in sync is to check with metronom - put 4/4 kick or hihat on seq of BSP, and turn on ableton metronom, play, and record the 4/4 kick or hihat in ableton. NOTE THAT FIRST about 3 steps will be off sync, but second beat, and next beats should sync correct... These later beats will be your guide, on whether to add minus or plus values (+- some ms) to your Mackie input latency... Transport is start stop, so if you want your BSP to start ableton... You will enable Mackie output transport. And you will to enable Mackie output sync also, as sync is the "clock" info - changing clock on BSP will sync ableton to same bpm... If you want to use also midi information from the BS you will enable midi out remote. That will enable ableton to listen to BSp midi messages
Even after all the latencies are sorted, when starting my gear with ableton, first few steps of sequence are out of sync anyway, so do not be worried of it, I found the easiest solution to this to fix that manually by copy paste of recording or just quantizing those first midi notes. It makes no difference if it's mmsuch midi sw/hw device as BSp TFp or more expensive hw synths / samplers... It's caused by ableton, windows, asio latency, not sure if Mac suffers from this too
Is there an updated version of this video? For me I have two devices, Arturia Beatep Pro as well as Arturia Beatstep Pro Port 2. When I do Mackie Classic Control, the synth that I have connected to the beatstep pro starts playing notes and controlling Ableton opening and closing all kinds of things.
Please post a simple straight forward video as to how to get it to sync with ableton. From buffer size in ableton preferences, latency compensation to artruria midi control center. Please cover this as simple as possible. There is not one clear video online showing this. Why can't this thing sync properly? Cheers, Harrison
except you literally just plug the USB in, set all the MIDI clock settings on Ableton to on with the input and output then set external sync on the beat step. its easy stuff fam.
the problem with the internal clock is that it goes off time a lot. Especially when you start using the chop functions, but I have had it go off time after only like 5 minutes of playing.
This video is too old and it doesn't show how to sync the Keystep Pro with Ableton in 2020. In USB mode, the transport buttons (record, stop, play) and the 5 other knobs are not being active and being assigned to MIDI/Key mappings.

I have tried to follow this but when I launch the Midi Control Centre, there is no 'Navigator' panel to the right in which to configure the BeatStep as described. Surely integration with Ableton Live 10 & 11 (and Logic Pro X also) should be built in or the appropriate installation/script software be made freely available on the Arturia website

I've followed your instructions, but I find the Beatstep Pro's play button makes Ableton trigger play twice, so it triggers it twice in quick succession, once when I press play and again when I release it. Getting a crazy glitch happening when Ableton is not in EXT mode, using Ableton's internal clock, and having Beatstep Pro in USB mode. When I press play at bar 1 (& only at bar 1) I get a rapid machine gun fire on beat one that just doesn't stop playing beat one ever hahaha. I have to mouse click anywhere else in the timeline to make it stop.

To say ableton is 'in sync' with the beatstep when receiving clock from it is a reach. Even on the video you can see it jittering around within a bpm or so in either direction. Causes issues with certain plugins. Any solution for this, or is the beatstep pro clock actually just not very stable?
When I use the Beatstep as a slave I can use the transport buttons only once. If I press stop on the Beatstep, the sync source jumps back from "USB" to "Int". WTF?
Worst integration and instructions ever here! NO USE. Struggle every time to either version of Live. Anyone has clear instruction of how to sync/transport BSP with Ableton 10? TNX! I want o start/stop Live from BSP and play BSP sequences in sync with Ableton tracks in arrangement view (no need for clip launch in mode). I'm not quite sure of the statement about MIDI machine control with Ableton. I never had to assign manually the transport controls on my MIDI keyboard...
Alessio Fontana Ableton has mapped some keyboards in the device connect section. They have not mapped our products yet (yes we have asked). Ableton does not accept MMC messages, only MIDI CC and they are not pre-mapped.
Glen Arturia One of the interesting issues I ran into when mapping my play button to Ableton's play button is when you hit the play button with or engage the pause button is that the transport keeps trying to replay from 1.1.1 immediately. I end up having to stop the beatstep pro and delete the midi mapping to get control of Ableton again. As far as getting more connectivity with Ableton, while they build a python control surface interface for the BSP, you can potentially fake the control with a MIDI remote script. createdigitalmusic.com/2009/07/ableton-live-midi-remote-scripting-how-to-custom-korg-nanoseries-control/ I'll probably cook one of these up tomorrow, so if I have success, I'll post something. A shame though that the transport thing can't be better figured out. This is something the Trigger Finger Pro actually seemed to get right. Funny enough, they don't have a personal custom script either. They are using Mackie Control Emulation as well, but the transport on the device actually does start Ableton without having to midi map it. Maybe there's some particular setting that will allow the BSP to access the transport but still slave to ableton's clock.

Also, when I want to use the BSP in external mode (sync set to USB) and additionally have Input Remote set to on in Ableton Live in order to also use it as controller, everything crashes only in case I have midi mapped the play button to the transport. Be great if there is a solution to this @Glen Arturia.

i have the pro, but i am having lots of trouble with...sync issue and weird glitch...even crash voltage is 10 volt can not work with minitaur and plenty other synth unless you have a potentiometer...the 3 sequence of the bsp is off and irregular:( do you have a positive feedback?

sorry but i can't map the transport in live 9.1.3 with Mac OSX yosemite. i've the beastep pro upgraded to firmware 1.3 (latest version) I have no problem with all the other CC mappings ( as VST mapping or similar) but i can't use CC map for the transport pannel of live. Any suggestion?

Hi! I have some troubles with my Beatstep (not Pro) too. When I using BS with Ableton 8 in External sync mode it has delay, for example: I play drums from drum rack in Ableton and play sequence from my BS on VST... BS sequence is delayed from drums... How to resolve this? Thanks!
I am having on how to use the Beatstep Pro with my Ableton vsts also. I would like it to control a vst i.e. a Sylenth for a bassline. How do I use the Beatstep to change the notes in my daw using the knobs?
@@VladimirMicic An issue I've been having with BSP/Ableton midi mapping is that when I switch patches within the instrument in Ableton (I'm using Massive), I want the value of the encoder to default to the value of **that VST parameter**. At the moment it defaults to the value of the encoder **on the BSP**. It's a huge limitation to what otherwise felt like super intuitive workflow in BSP/Ableton. Is there any way around this, am I missing something? I've found literally nothing online after extensive searches and contacting Arturia. :(
Syncing Ableton to the beatstep pro makes no sense. You can not instant clip- record in ableton and thus there is no pre count of the metronome ether. BSP has to be synced TO ableton in order to get a pre count and to be able to record to a clip right away.. But if you sync bsp to ableton there is a massive problem with the transport keys, if you want to use them to control ableton: you get a "feedback" loop of some sort. Pressing play on the bsp starts ableton.. ableton then sends out a start signal to the bsp and guess what?.. bsp understands this as a "Pause" ..and triggers a restart in ableton, which triggers a restart in bsp again...which can result in a terrible noise because of the constant restarts of ableton. this problem is mostly based on the fact that the transport buttons on the bsp sends different values for pressing and releasing ..forcing ableton to start at button press and restart on button release, making it not possible to control ableton with the transport buttons of the bsp AND the bsp being synced to ableton at the same time. Seems like the transport buttons can not differentiate if somebody really hard presses the button down or if ableton just sends a start signal to the button logic.

Had this thing months as thought it would help creativity, instead it's a total pain and as judging by the comments by some poor fellow "users" Arturia have not sorted things. I have been back & forth between tech support and still can't get it operating as follows: Bspro sequencing my drum machine and external synth Recording both midi and audio using ableton as the master clock - be Able to use / midi map the 16 cc knobs to live devices (eg: filter cut off, delay wet/dry etc) Really simple basic stuff - I just don’t get why this isn’t happening. May as well fuck it off and get a midi interface and some extra midi knobs. 1/10
you guys from Arturia don't make it clear whether is beat step or mb 2s, ,i always have to spend an entire day watching lots of tutorials just to get one thing, which is how to start and what I need in order to start. these 2 questions are never answered in one explanatory video
I reckon in my 25 years of buying music equipment that the Beatstep would have to rate as the worst purchase. My unit doesn't even sit flat on my desk. The slow knobs debacle and micro-USB power port(s) have ensured that I won't consider buying any Arturia products in the future.
This is hands down the most useless how-to video. You jumped around way too much and never explained how to simply get sound to come out / connect to ableton.
Any idea why, only one sequencer ( drum ) is active and I can sequence a synth, other 2 ( yellow and green) are not active, totally dead, can't program a single note on it. My BSP is connected to Minibrute 2 synth via midi cable, outlet from BSP to in on Minibrute ? Just gonna add when BSP is connected to a DAW , all sequencers are active, not a problem, but I want to use my BSP with a hardware instead of software ???

Syncing a DAW with MIDI is no simple task- there's a small market of devices designed JUST to fix that problem. (InnerClock, Expert Sleepers, etc)

Midi Control Center is part of the software you get with most Arturia midi interfaces. You can download it from their website.
Is there a reason why the BSP would suddenly stop receiving sync messages after about 5 minutes requiring a reboot of the BSP to work again?

You have to go device settings and then find “mackie control/HUI” then change it to MCU
same here- it doesnt do the side panel in my config either for some reason, but all of the same settings are there in Device Settings just full screen
this video should probably star with Mapping transports. But I don't think you need to map them any longer, its all done automatically.

Alessio Fontana Ableton has mapped some keyboards in the device connect section. They have not mapped our products yet (yes we have asked). Ableton does not accept MMC messages, only MIDI CC and they are not pre-mapped.
Glen Arturia One of the interesting issues I ran into when mapping my play button to Ableton's play button is when you hit the play button with or engage the pause button is that the transport keeps trying to replay from 1.1.1 immediately. I end up having to stop the beatstep pro and delete the midi mapping to get control of Ableton again.
As far as getting more connectivity with Ableton, while they build a python control surface interface for the BSP, you can potentially fake the control with a MIDI remote script.

I'll probably cook one of these up tomorrow, so if I have success, I'll post something. A shame though that the transport thing can't be better figured out. This is something the Trigger Finger Pro actually seemed to get right. Funny enough, they don't have a personal custom script either. They are using Mackie Control Emulation as well, but the transport on the device actually does start Ableton without having to midi map it. Maybe there's some particular setting that will allow the BSP to access the transport but still slave to ableton's clock.
Glen Arturia does the beatstep pro have polyphonic capability or chording options?
+mubalicious That's exactly my problem. Also, when I want to use the BSP in external mode (sync set to USB) and additionally have Input Remote set to on in Ableton Live in order to also use it as controller, everything crashes only in case I have midi mapped the play button to the transport. Be great if there is a solution to this @Glen Arturia.

Hi Man, my BSP is not mapping in CC mode anything from Ableton, I am using CC mode with my external gears and I have some more knobs and little pads free that I would like to use to map from Ableton without getting mad in switching between CC and MCU/HUI to use everything

Hi. Can I play a drum VST like Microtonic from Sonic Charge with the pads of the BeatStep Pro in midi mode, with velocity sensitivity? So the question is do the pads of the BeatStep Pro have velocity and pressure sensitivity in midi mode?

i have the pro, but i am having lots of trouble with...sync issue and weird glitch...even crash voltage is 10 volt can not work with minitaur and plenty other synth unless you have a potentiometer...the 3 sequence of the bsp is off and irregular:( do you have a positive feedback?

I downloaded already the firmware by Cutoff from the video ARMK1 with the Beatstep Pro, I would like to map the scene mode from The AR to the STP, on this firmware there is already the mute and the performance done...very great, I need to know Please is it possible to map even the scene mode on the BSP and if is yes I would like to map even on each channels the volume control.

i did exactly the same as in this video (preferences) and i cannot controll anything with the beatstep... when i wiggle a knob it just goes wild as fuck, selects clips, enables solomode and so on... i seriously ask myself am i dumb as fuck or is this thing not working at all?

I have got the Arturia finally to sync with ableton, until now it's still not optimal because I still need to quantize in ableton afterwards but other than that the Arturia BS Pro is really a good piece of equipment, I'm keeping it and thanks for your work

Hi! I have some troubles with my Beatstep (not Pro) too. When I using BS with Ableton 8 in External sync mode it has delay, for example: I play drums from drum rack in Ableton and play sequence from my BS on VST... BS sequence is delayed from drums... How to resolve this? Thanks!

I am having on how to use the Beatstep Pro with my Ableton vsts also. I would like it to control a vst i.e. a Sylenth for a bassline. How do I use the Beatstep to change the notes in my daw using the knobs?
you can map all the encoders to desired parameter in ableton if you use MIDI learn in ableton, beatstep in control mode, MCU
@@VladimirMicic An issue I've been having with BSP/Ableton midi mapping is that when I switch patches within the instrument in Ableton (I'm using Massive), I want the value of the encoder to default to the value of **that VST parameter**. At the moment it defaults to the value of the encoder **on the BSP**.
It's a huge limitation to what otherwise felt like super intuitive workflow in BSP/Ableton. Is there any way around this, am I missing something? I've found literally nothing online after extensive searches and contacting Arturia. :(
Why do you keep mentioning a Mackie control? What's that got to do with using a Beatstep Pro and Ableton Live?

Syncing Ableton to the beatstep pro makes no sense. You can not instant clip- record in ableton and thus there is no pre count of the metronome ether. BSP has to be synced TO ableton in order to get a pre count and to be able to record to a clip right away.. But if you sync bsp to ableton there is a massive problem with the transport keys, if you want to use them to control ableton: you get a "feedback" loop of some sort. Pressing play on the bsp starts ableton.. ableton then sends out a start signal to the bsp and guess what?.. bsp understands this as a "Pause" ..and triggers a restart in ableton, which triggers a restart in bsp again...which can result in a terrible noise because of the constant restarts of ableton.
this problem is mostly based on the fact that the transport buttons on the bsp sends different values for pressing and releasing ..forcing ableton to start at button press and restart on button release, making it not possible to control ableton with the transport buttons of the bsp AND the bsp being synced to ableton at the same time. Seems like the transport buttons can not differentiate if somebody really hard presses the button down or if ableton just sends a start signal to the button logic.

Hands down the worse product "setup" video ever created. Had this thing months as thought it would help creativity, instead it's a total pain and as judging by the comments by some poor fellow "users" Arturia have not sorted things. I have been back & forth between tech support and still can't get it operating as follows:

- be Able to use / midi map the 16 cc knobs to live devices (eg: filter cut off, delay wet/dry etc)
Really simple basic stuff - I just don’t get why this isn’t happening.

I reckon in my 25 years of buying music equipment that the Beatstep would have to rate as the worst purchase. My unit doesn't even sit flat on my desk. The slow knobs debacle and micro-USB power port(s) have ensured that I won't consider buying any Arturia products in the future.

Any idea why, only one sequencer ( drum ) is active and I can sequence a synth, other 2 ( yellow and green) are not active, totally dead, can't program a single note on it.
My BSP is connected to Minibrute 2 synth via midi cable, outlet from BSP to in on Minibrute ?
Just gonna add when BSP is connected to a DAW , all sequencers are active, not a problem, but I want to use my BSP with a hardware instead of software ???
