    There is also a great documentary about Elvis and black community.
    He was an amazing man who stood up against racism and bigotry.
    I think it was a concert in Texas where Elvis was informed that he should leave his, black, back up singers behind because they weren't allowed into the venue and Elvis said that if they weren't allowed in then he would cancel his concert. His back up girls sang there hearts out that night. The interview is in that documentary. I hope you have the time to watch it.
    In the Ghetto is also a great song.
    You should also check out his gospel music.

    Elvis is in all four hall of fames. Rock, county, gospel and R&B. The only artist to hold that honor. He has fun songs like patch it up and touching songs like love me tender. His voice suits every genre of music. I'd recommend steamroller blues from his Hawaii concert. It's fun to watch him do it. For a powerful voice I'd recommend what now my love.

      @@bwana-ma-coo-bah425 Now that would have been something. However, Elvis knew MLK and funded the movement and was really cut up when he was killed. That's why he did the song. He couldn't attend because he was filming in another part of the country and ''The Colonel'' had him firmly under his thumb. I'm wondering if not going was the right thing to do. It would have taken away from the dignity of the occasion if some stupid young girls saw Elvis and started screaming and jumping up and down like they normally did when he was around. Not being there stopped that happening. What do you think?

      Hi Margaret,
      I think that you are one of a very few who can make a sane statement. Nice work!! The song was originally written for his 68 comeback special. He Elvis later re did the song live and dedicated it to the late great MLK. Here is the problem I have. So many delusional Elvis fans, not saying you are one of them, keep making silly statements that Elvis went against the colonel. Even by your own admission the colonel controlled Elvis. There are only two occasions that Elvis went against the colonel. 1. was in the ghetto which was handed firstly to two other black artists before Elvis got his hands on it. and 2 was if I can dream.
      Here is a post from one of Elvis's fellow fans.
      Gooneress
      4 months ago
      He admired Dr King (some Elvis fans tend to claim that they were friends but there's no substantiated proof of this)
      In any case. If that was your friend what would you do to be there?
      Would you do as you are told or stop at nothing on gods grey earth to be there?
      I know what I would have done.

Mom came racing in but I was crying and incoherent so I just pointed at the tv. When they said it again, my mom collapsed on the floor beside me and there were 2 hysterical females sobbing heartbrokenly. Greatest live performance in history!!

  • @larrywt656
    @larrywt656 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I'm surprised that Sony/RCA has started blocking this. There have been literally dozens of reaction channels that have reacted to this over the last year or so that have neither had to put an effect on the video NOR edit the video to get it onto their channels. It's very sad to me that this has happened because this is one of the greatest performances of all time. This TV special marked Elvis' return to live performing for the first time in almost eight years. He had been primarily acting in a series of formula films (the same story with different settings and character names) since 1960 and was growing very weary of it. He had aspirations to be a serious actor, but the scripts he was getting hired to star in were getting worse and worse. Other than a handful of new albums during that eight year span, the only recording he was doing was the soundtracks albums for the films he was starring in. Since he couldn't find a serious role to play, he told his manager Tom Parker that he wanted to return to live performances and real studio recording. Parker arranged this special with NBC. But the producers of the special had a stipulation in their contracts that they and Elvis himself would have total creative control over the special, and Parker would have no say in the content. The special was to be shot in the summer of 1968 (a VERY tumultuous year in US history...think 2020 on steroids), but it would not air until just before Christmas in December. As a result, Parker had requested Elvis close the show with a medley of Christmas songs. In a rare moment for Elvis, he told Parker no, and he and the producers searched for a song with meaning to close the show. Martin Luther King had been assassinated in Elvis' hometown of Memphis a couple of months earlier, and Elvis had been deeply effected by this. Songwriter Walter Earl Brown wrote this song utilizing paraphrased quotes from MLK's legendary I Have A Dream speech. Then at the time the special was being produced, Robert Kennedy was assassinated in Los Angeles while campaigning for President, giving Elvis extra motivation. Several attempts were made at producing the perfect version of the song, including a studio version, a live version recorded during one of the four concert appearances filmed for the special, and a "live-in-the-studio" version featuring Elvis recording numerous live takes with the band on stage with no live audience. Finally, Elvis recorded one last take with nobody else in the studio except the camera operators, using a recording of the band and backup singers. That is what you see here, and this was the version used in the special. Elvis felt that this performance of the song was so perfect that he never performed the song live ever again, not wanting to try and top this version.

    • @RJsStudio131
      @RJsStudio131 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice overall view of the special...the only things I would add is that RFK was killed before they taped this show on June 6th, (53 years ago today in fact). The show was taped at the end of June around the 28th. It wasn't until they were in the final stages of taping, when they needed something to end with.. Parker wanted "I Believe" Elvis said no.And as far as the Colonel, no matter what he had negotiated at first ( A totally Christmas show). or how much he pitched a fit, he NEVER had any creative control over Elvis his entire career. Elvis, to his detriment, gave in to him out loyalty over the years, but he always had final say in creativity. Parker negotiated contracts, and sold merchandising. That's why he only got 25% of all songs, movies and Concerts. 50% from merchandising until 1976 when for the first time their contract was revised to 50% of all endeavors, which lasted only a year.

He was a true Southerner, and loved all aspects of that place and time. We all have to forget the past, a time we didn't live, let it go, love one another and move on together. The song is also dedicated to Robert Kennedy who was also murdered that year and the red tie he is wearing signifies all of the blood shed in Vietnam! If you are going to know what it represents you should know all of it! He also broke down backstage afterwards and couldn't be consoled for quite some time!

    Here are a few more Elvis Presley suggestions that you should react to....
    👇👇
    1: American Trilogy (Live from Honolulu)
    2: You Gave Me A Mountain
    3: Bridge Over Troubled Water
    4: In The Ghetto

    Glad you got to hear the whole song. It is as powerful now, as it was then, for different reasons, of course. He did another 'socially aware' song. Check out, In The Ghetto.

    This song makes me emotional every time. Not because I was there or experienced the turmoil and tragedy that was occuring but because you can hear and feel the pain in this preformance. It's raw, emotional and powerful. That's what a real artist is capable of, even decades and a whole generation later.
    Side note. I read that he went backstage and cried at the end of this performance and I can believe it.

    It's great to see an appreciative listener hear this one for the first time. It's a magnificent performance, all the way around. You maybe oughtta check out, "I Got My Mojo Workin'"! {Ya, cover of old Muddy Waters song written by Red Foster. Elvis did some good funk, too, '73-ish, with such recordings as, "If You Don't Come Back". Man, Elvis A to Z is ALL amazing! His lesser-known '50s stuff {One Sided Love Affair, for example} is also a treasure-trove of Great rock'n'roll.

      @@evabartlett4599 I love the song ‘In the Ghetto,’ but I hope it only requires an effect on screen, and not keep jumping, there are generations who have never really listened to Elvis Presley. it would be nice if they got the chance, through this channel. It was a shame that this record kept jumping so badly, some listeners (who don’t really know Elvis) may have thought the song really sounded like that.

    If not done, to In the Ghetto. He was born in poverty in Tupelo Miss., His early years were gospel and he loved singing gospel throughout his career. He refuse to perform at venues that that protested his backup black singers. One call him 'boss' and he said 'no, it's brother'. He was a religious man, had an unbelieveable voice, charisma, looks and was "The King". he changed the face of music. Great reaction. Hard to believe his video is being blocked.

    Check out the video “Elvis and the Black Community; The Echo will never die”. It’s s short Bio. Elvis grew up in poverty, living in Tupelo, MO & Memphis, TN. His family lived in poor neighborhoods consisting primarily of black families. He sang gospel in a local Baptist Church. He songs are gospel, soul, rock, etc. . Check out “In the Ghetto” and remember that Elvis grew up in poverty.
