@@wood2103The problem is more that with the internet and everyone all of a sudden are able to express their feelings online, it’s becoming apparent that people have been offended by racist jokes for as long as they’ve been around, people just ignored them and never heard about them. So again, it’s not like people just started being offended. It’s more they were just ignored and ridiculed in the past instead.
You're right, he would be canceled today...and that would be horrible. This man had a delivery like no other, able to heavily insult everyone, and offend no one. What a gift
Wow…goosebumps. Reminds me of an episode of Everybody Hates Chris where Chris starts discovering his favorite comedians. His parents had records of them.
I am English but I find Don Rickles one of the funniest men around, he was not racist, he treated everyone the same. It’s called having a sense of humour. There was no malice in his act, and that’s what it was an act. The wokeism of today lack that most vital ingredient for happiness, a sense of humour. They look for offence where none is intended, it’s being so miserable that keeps them happy. Thank you mate for laughing along with the rest of us and sharing, the truth of the matter is when people are laughing together they aren’t fighting. Take care. Best wishes from England 🏴
The irony is that Don Rickles was one of the nicest, most kind-hearted guys you’d ever meet. That whole persona is just an act. If Rickles was scheduled to be on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show” when I was growing up, I’d beg my parents to let me stay up and watch him. Many times I’d audio tape him with my little cassette recorder. It was all improv with him.

Don Rickells told a story where he asked Frank Sinatra to stop by his dinner table, so his date would be impressed. Frank Sinatra came by and said Hi to Don Rickles. Don Rickles immediately snapped at Frank Sinatra, " Frank I told you never to bother me while I'm busy". Genius move!
Then there's the Ketchup story. Rickles, Newhart and their wives were out to dinner with Sinatra, and some in his entourage. Some of the food was late getting to the table. Rickles had ordered a burger and fries which came to the table. Sinatra's order was late and he was getting irate. Finally he got so mad that he picked up a bottle of ketchup on the table and threw it against the will shattering it. Rickles without hesitation picked picked up a french fry and and looked down to the head of the table saying "Hey Frank, will you pass the Ketchup" ? It broke all the tension in the room as every body laughed especially Sinatra. Frank Sinatra made it Ok to be insulted by Rickles. Frank got the joke and allowed himself to made fun of....only by Rickles. It made Don's career
I grew up listening to Don Rickles from the mid-50s, and we all love him, and stayed up to watch him on late night talk shows. Nonstop hilarity. He would hold his own on a street corner "signifying" in any city. RIP Mr Rickles.
My Aunt and uncle lived in Las Vegas and new him. They told me this stuff was Totally an act, and that he was one of the sweetest people you could meet.
My 1st time was seeing him was in Vegas. He picked out a mixed couple to harass. At the end of the show she got a huge bouquet of flowers. He was given a bottle of wine. Saw him again the next summer. Joan Rivers opened for him. Same thing. Harass the mixed couple. End of the show, bouquet and wine. Because we bought tickets that were right up against the stage he shook each of our hands. Ladies first. Men a bit later. Beautiful human.
I saw a comment on a different Don Rickles video about how Rickles was picking on a couple on their honeymoon that was in the front row of one of his shows in Vegas. A couple of days later when the newlyweds went to check out of their hotel, they were told that Don Rickles had already paid their bill for them. Straight class...
If you ever get to hear his monologue at the end of his stand up shows, you'll understand where Don is coming from. The man was building bridges his whole life, bringing people together through laughter about ourselves. The world needs Don Rickles today...
I’m 66 and 1/2 Polish. Polish jokes were a thing in the late 60s-early seventies. Rickles had a ton of them. I laughed along with them. It never was taken personally. I understand that there are and should be taboo words and utterances. I also believe that society has to lighten up and not take everything so personally.
Don Rickles loved people, and was actually kind and had a heart of gold. His humor celebrated humanity in all its diversity, laughing along with us at the human condition. I enjoyed your take on this video topic, thank you!
Bro, thank you for being cool about the jokes. More people need to learn from you. That's the way life should be. Just laugh. People too sensitive. He rips on everyone, including his own. Appreciate the vid man .
Don Rickles was one of the most amazing comics to ever live , he talked about the things that most folks only whisper in a loud voice , he taught us we are all the same and ended all his shows talking about love and peace and brotherhood between all races and religions. A truly amazing man.
I work in vegas 46 years ago and he would come by and talk about us like adog he would cuss us òut everytme .He said we were the funky M F around .He said we smell like a table
Rickles died in 2017 at the age of 90. He was doing these insults the day he died. There was no canceling him. How do you cancel someone who's career was built on inappropriate humor? He was basically the same on a roast show as he was on any other show.
He had a famous rib on Obama at the Shirley MacLaine AFI which I sense was cut out. Idk if Obama laughed or not but it does not matter because this is a figure involved with politics and in politics you also have the side that is ultra sensitive. They pounded him in the news, but he faded out. It didn't matter because he still did shows and so many people respected him. He earned it, and it was from the days where this pc garbage wasn't lying around. What I am about to say is based on observation. Had he been trying to have a career today, imo, young and fresh, he probably couldn't. He has the talent to do it. We are canceling him again, even though he's "earned" it and is as appreciated as he is. This is all because of oversensitive angry subjective hypocrites who will overanalyze everything where people will be absolutely miserable. Its SICKENING, and people who know how to ride politics well, are probably using this to their advantage, this sensitive era, to destroy the careers of people they do not like. Morality is a very subjective thing because of different definitions in different cultures. Anger and emotion cloud judgement.
@@NoOne-kr4jc The comment on Obama was edited out of the broadcast. Obama is not even mentioned on his wiki page. There was no scandal. Canceled? Rickles' schedule did not slow down after that. He looks like he was as busy as ever. Check his IMDB page.

DR became the WORLD'S BEST HECKLER! He was the ARCHIE BUNKER of stand-up. He shone a spotlight on racism, bigotry, prejudice and exclusivity. NO ONE was off limits. But everyone knew behind his verbal assault was a HEART OF GOLD.
I'm 57 and grew up watching all these old school guys. Look at all the 70's top sitcoms. All In The Family, Sanford & Son, Jeffersons and others all pushed the racial card and it was funny as hell and no one was canceled or uptight. There was a whole lot less racial tension than today as well.
Well said. Back then you didn't look around worrying about who is going to blow a gasket being offended and try to cancel them and destroy their career. You laughed because everyone laughed since it was a joke and you knew that deep down he was just bringing people together with humor and laughter.
I lived during those days and they were not as you remembered. Interracial love scenes on television were taboo (Black man/White woman). Gay romance was non-existent and any openly gay person had to be presented as an over-the-top Liberace type character. Asian men were portrayed as servants or martial arts experts. You never saw an Asian man (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) in a romantic role. Selective memory is a hell of thing.
I’m glad you liked him. Nobody was “safe” with Don Rickles, he picked on everyone. He would take the stereotypical stance and run hard with it. Like one commenter said before me “it was a badge of honor to be insulted by this man.” I saw at the end of his show, he told how much he loved everyone….just don’t move to my neighborhood. 😂
Saw his Vegas act, he went table by table and ripped the sh-t out of each person. Funniest night of my life. At the break he had expensive champagne delivered to each victim table. His closing statement about the ability to laugh at ourselves was pure class. Sadly it is an ability that many lack today.
The GREAT Don Rickles or better known as "Mr Warmth" or "The Merchant of Venom" was the KING of the Insult. Actors and Comedians alike would proclaim, "If you haven't been burned by Don you haven't made it yet" RIP Don.
Glad you discovered Rickles! One of the greatest minds and funniest people who ever lived. Too bad he'd be in jail today for saying these things that were funny and are still funny. What a shame! So glad you could laugh at him. Shows you're a cool, open-minded guy, and recognize a joke when you see one. Rickles wasn't malicious. He knew it was all in fun and loved everybody.
Don Rickles created "insult comedy", and he was hilarious with it and always brought it all together at the end of his shows with reminding his audiences that we're all in this together, no matter the race or religion, we all have to get along and he did that for as long as I can remember, RIP Don, you still make us laugh and you still make us think!
No, he didn't create insult comedy. Mom's Mabley and others were doing it way before him, but white fragility kept them on them chitli'n circuit. You don't know what you're talking about.
When I was growing up in the 70s Don Rickles was already an older comedian, but man was he funny. I always feel weird when younger folks say they've never heard of this guy or that girl...I feel so old! I'm glad you got a chance to see how funny Don Rickles was. He was and still is the king of insult comedy.
You are an awesome man to not be offended by Don. We lost the ability to laugh at our differences! The thing about Don was, nobody was safe! Lol! Great video sir!
I wanted to share this story. A friend of mine who was a budding comedian/actor was attending a class for aspiring entertainers in NYC many years ago (I wish I could remember the school or venue now; I can't and my friend is no longer with us). After the class was over, my friend walked out and who was standing on the front steps of the building but Don Rickles. Thinking quickly, he walked up to Don and used one of his own insults on him: "Nice jacket, Don - what did you do, shoot a mattress?" Rickles laughed, and Don spoke with my friend for about ten minutes or so, gave him some career advice and wished him well. That's the kind of guy he was. RIP my friend Mark, a funny guy in his own right, and RIP Don Rickles.
Don rickles was so nice when I was working security in Bel Air California he let me use extension cord from his garage ? why I was able to keep the fan in my patrol car it was a nice warm-hearted man it was hot outside mosquitoes at night were bothering me with the windows down and I had a fan connected to his garage going into my car
I'm 59 years old and I remember all of these great performers. Don Rickles is the hardest working, funniest comedian in the industry. Nipsey Russell is known for rhyming,...ect. Everyone back then were excellent professionals. This is our history. Embrace it. Cancel, ❌ culture idiots. Celebrate the great entertainers! I ❤️ Don Rickles!

How refreshing of you to see the humor in this as a young person who’s never seen him before thank God for people like you I don’t know what this world is coming to when they’re telling us what to say and what to think and how to say it. Thank you for your honest opinion
This is why us ‘older’ folks can truly appreciate Dave Chapelle! Although I am not a fan of the cursy words, Dave, like Don, knows we need to laugh at each…no one escapes…no barriers…TRUE COMEDY! ❤️
Ol' Don...one of the greatest of all time. Paving the way. Never has a man been loved so much who spend his whole long, long, loooooong career insulting everybody. ☺ He helped us all not take ourselves so seriously, and truly pivotal in helping us laugh at and appreciate our differences. Today's cancel culture is solely a political ploy to keep us divided. United we are stronger...and what could be scarier for a government. So happy to have grown up during his prime along with so many other magnificent performers like we have never seen since.
That's because most white people of that generation had a false sense of security. When everybody started making jokes about white people then it all changed.
Early in Ray Romano's (Everybody Loves Raymond) career, after a show he was approached by Rickles. Don said to him, "I saw your set kid." Ray asked, "Did you like it?" (Or something to that effect.) Don took Ray's hand, and cupped both of his hands around it in the most loving, caring way and simply asked him, "Have you considered a career in food delivery?" I think it's safe to say he liked it. (And rightfully so. Ray Romano is hilarious.) As a comedian, getting picked on by Rickles is about the same as being a musician and getting your song parodied by Weird Al Yankovic.
I grew up at a time when we watched him and shows that insulted people. Interestingly, I never felt insulted. I was taught to be proud of who I was and not to care what others thought. Most importantly my parents never pointed out that we were any different than anyone else. I feel that’s they key to growing up stable. Teach kids that we’re all just beautiful varieties of the same species. ❤
He was so quick witted, and no one was big enough or important enough to be off limits. You can't get insulted when everyone is a target. They all loved him as a person. I saw him in Vegas at the end of his career. It was sad to see he was struggling, but he still was funny
fun fact about him is that throughout his entire career, he never wrote any material.. he was 💯% improve every gig. his quick wit and savage roasting is unparalleled. a true legend
If you ever watch him do comedy, he always ends with a positive message. One of inclusion. He uses that end to make sure people know he is not serious about anything he says. But before a show, he would send out people to check the crowd out to see how far he can take things. He died 6 years ago, right as cancel culture and woke crap started popping up, and seemed unfazed by it. Everyone still loved him right to the end.
I remember in the 70's as a young guy, I was shocked when I listened to him but couldn't help but laugh. Then I realized no one was too good for his insults and everyone was a recipient. Truly, he brought people together because with him, all were equal. Thanks for this reminder.
Similar story. I was a kid and thought he was just a mean man and hated it when he was on anything we were watching. But as I matured, I finally got the joke and realized the level of his genius.
Don was a literal living legend. He died in 2017 and was still semi-active on stage when he passed. If he had lived into today's age of wokeness and cancel culture he would have fought back by roasting all the wokies and being hilarious while doing it.

Our family on a vacation in the mid '70's saw him at the Riviera in LasVegas. He kept us in stitches for what must have been an hour or more. Rickles was an equal opportunity insulter, and even turned the cannon at himself, just to be fair. Rickles basically kept a long roster of jokes, and selected among them during crowd work as appropriate. If you watched enough performances, you would hear jokes repeat, but not entirely shows.

You still can. You just have to do it well. Ever listen to Jimmy Carr? Lisa Lampanelli? Nobody is canceling them. Louis CK got cancelled but not because of the jokes he told. One woman tried to cancel Tosh and it didn't work. (He caved and apologized but he didn't really need to.)
One of the Black comedians he was roasting from the Dias was a man named Nipsy Russel. Check him out. The little guy was Sammy Davis, Jr., a great singer. Loved your reaction!
He was hilarious and he liked to hit you where it hurt but you knew he was joking, that’s what made him so funny and back then people would laugh when jokingly insulted, not cry from sensitivity
