It's really amazing what you do for the comunity. I'm a UX UI Designer and I'm digging deeper into the Accessibility world and it is fascinating what it needs to be done even before definition phase of any project. Every single app designer should have a team of folks who use these access tools on the regular basis to test drive each app as it’s being developed - and, I would also add pay those folks rather than asking for street volunteers-we have got to get away from that model! Our voice is just as good as anybody else’s voice, and it should be honored!

Thank you so much for taking the time to put this information out there for the blind and visually impaired. I really appreciate it. I've had Central serious retinopathy for about 28 years. Most people get these little bubbles in one eye and most commonly they resolve themselves. It's rare to get it in both, rarer for them not to resolve. Unfortunately they encroached my center line of vision and it's still difficult to accept losing that Independence that goes along with vision. I think it was about a year and a half ago that I had decided I needed to stop driving. No pity party though. Not that I'm happy about it but.... I feel fortunate and grateful that I have revision I do. I don't know if you're familiar with it but it affects our somewhat widespread having to do with too much light, not enough light, corrective lens don't do anything for it as it is a distortion somewhat like looking through a glass filled with water. Some of my most favorite things to do is fixing things, remodeling, building things, it doesn't matter what. Anything from a house to metal fabrication on a custom car. So I do a lot with or I should say by feel now. I'm actually looking for the best phone, probably Android that may have a larger screen and I'm not really sure. This condition seems to be progressing so I'm just gathering information right now. Actually interestingly enough, I'm able to just barely make out text in messenger or regular text on a good day. On a bad day, they would need to be in capital letters and sentences double spaced. I think I need to find some app that is easy to use as far as magnifying and making the print bold. A bigger screen. Oh anyway I was talking about interestingly enough, I graduated to reading glasses of 3.75 which without them I am unable to make out anything on the screen. Sorry for battling. Hi Joseph! I'm so glad that you were able to find this video and I am so sorry that you are going through this. It can definitely be such a difficult journey, but many of us have gone through it and you will grow stronger, friend. It will get better. You are strong enough to overcome it and continue to live the life you want. My dad is totally blind and has been so since his late teens. But he is the one who, sighted and blind, go to when something needs to be fixed. He might need some sighted guidance sometimes, but he does everything by feel! I have quite a few different videos on accessibility for iPhone and Android. You may want to check them out. Both types of phone have a lot of accessibility features that can help you make things bigger. And there are also accessibility features that will read aloud thing sfor you. There's a lot of things out there and from low vision to totally blind, one can use both an android and iphone independently. All the very best, Carrie.
I have CSR for about 4.5 years for now. Firstly in one eye, now in both :( I know your feeling, bro. For me the worst part of it is the significant metamorphosia, so I see straight lines and text being bent and crooked. It is depressing to loose your vision progressively, but let's try to think on that in a positive way. Probably there will be a normal cure in the future. Otherwise, thanks to such brilliant videos and modern technologies we will still be able to see this world at least by our smartphone's camera!
I would like to add the seeing AI app also has a channel in it to read currency. It also has the option in it to turn on the camera when it cannot read whatever you're trying to get it to read however, seeing AI has to have an Internet connection to function rather it is the Wi-Fi or your cellular data, so if you were using an iPad, you have to have Wi-Fi for that app to work. It's not a problem on the phone since you typically always have cellular data now just letting people know that.

I am a hospice volunteer and 2 of the people who I visit and spend time with have macular degeneration. As their vision gets worse I seek apps like this or other little life adjustments or even devices. What I mean is I was very surprised when I found out that I was making video calls to people using the be my eyes app. So, I just want to know, is it okay if I answer that person’s question? I wasn’t sure what button it was when I first explored this app and I tried to click it. Apparently, it made a video call. To my surprise, I just kept quiet throughout the call and luckily I found the end call button. Lol! Feelings of uneasiness enveloped me after I ended the call but when I think back, it was funny.

Yeah. It’s hard for blind and visually impairred people to comunicate at first. They will feel uncomfortable to talk with other people. But we need to get used to it because when we go out, we need to comunicate with many people. Though this app is not bad from my side. I'am still using other apps, but for more accurate expirience, I prefer Be My Eyes.
I wish wezoom would have a slider bar to be able to zoom in quicker than just pinch and zoom. I also wish you could lock the settings so when you reopen the app it would stay where you left it
My top apps are Seeing AI, Blind Square, and I just subscribed to Scribd. Scribd is for everyone. However it’s very accessible on the iPhone. There are some books that are not on the iBooks app that are definitely on the Scribd app. You have to pay for this particular app also. I recently lost the ability to read effectively by eye, but I have hundreds of books in the cloud/on Scribd now. Thanks for the video!
Helo. . I personally prefer Google Play Books than Audible. I believe they have the same library, but I usually find best offers there. Also, as a Podcast freak, Google Podcasts and Podcast Addict are great ones. Thanks for sharing all this great content and congrats for the amazing work... :-)

These are some great suggestions. I hope you don’t mind but I shared your video in my tech group on Facebook. I really like the Voice Dream apps. I can write accessible documents on my phone with voice dream writer, I can scan print text with voice dream scanner, and then I can save those documents are pages I’ve scanned with voice dream scanner, and then save them to voice dream reader to read them excessively.

I would like to make a correction after seeing my own comment they seeing AI app has an option to automatically turn on your light. If the camera cannot physically read whatever it's trying to read it is in the settings and then options you can turn it on or off that is what I meant. When I said camera and turning it on I meant the light for the camera to read, the app can do it automatically if it needs it

Thanks, my AMD is getting worse at 74. Keyboard is hard to use and i have some programming and electronic projects to finish. WeZoom is great, it doesn't seem to timeout. Triple tap and hold will time out before i can find the place where i want to solder. or even the boxes on the 1040 tax form. Thank you very much Do you have suggestions for monitors? Hi there! I'm glad it's helping. Let me answer your questions but first I just want to Just let you know that have a new channel called carrie on accessibility. This channel has been discontinued. I would discourage you from changing your resolution. At least not too much. What you can actually do if you're using Windows is change display scaling. It keeps it sharp while still making everything larger. You can play around it with the percentages. I have mine I think around 175% or maybe 200%. It also just depends on your monitor. You can also change text size. That changes a lot of the UI user interface text. On Android, you can just triple tap without holding. You can do both. If you only triple tap it will stay there and then you can pan around with two fingers. The triple tap and hold is great because it helps you read faster. Or move around faster. They do have large high contrast keyboards. There are pretty nice ones on Amazon. It will be more expensive if it's wireless but there is an Azio one that is wired and backlit for a decent price. Is there an Android app that will help on basic phone items for the blind? I just want to make calls and text. While the basics are there (call "Sue" or "message Sue") I need more like consistency ("OK google" doesn't always work - Samsung phone). I need to be able to repeat things like who is calling, messages (will only read once), past messages retrieval (on phone messages and texts), saying numbers when a phone system prompts, easy editing of texts, etc.,etc. Many times my phone goes into never never land and won't do anything (updates or thinking I asked for info on something). I have to take my phone to my husband to have him back me out of what is stopping the voice from working. It is extremely frustrating. Then there are the changes when some "supersmart" (just kidding) Google engineer makes a change and kills a feature that might work. Are there apps by people that cater to the blind or nearly blind? I don't need any of the "identify this or that" stuff, just basic functions like I used to use before I lost my vision. Thanks so much....great videos!

This is a interesting count down list Carrie, I myself tried to get the android Google lookout app on my old phone but then I heard from talkback "your phone is not compatible with this device" so my guess is these apps require a high definition type of camera which sucks for me because not matter how much I ask my parents, they won't get me a 2021 phone and that is so frustrating. If I lived on my own I would've had the new phone already.

It is an audio call only app and seems to be a pretty fun place to chat with a lot of other blind people. There are blind and visually impaired people on there from all over the world. It might something to look into! There are also communities for the blind and visually impaired on facebook.

I'm sure there are others out there, but I haven't really tried them. Another really great resource for android is a podcast called blind android users. They have great episodes and I think that they had a discussion about weather apps in the past. All the best with your android journey! Carrie.
In Sweden we get them they say player at Cetra for free and I do prefer you think it over on my smart phone since I told Hasse a lot better battery for instance and we have old version of the book thing as well hundred thousand titles already and if there’s someone that’s not, you can always ask them to read one and I have asked them to read in five books and they won’t have. I got them ready. Yes perfect and everything is totally free. since unlock the United States, we are not a developing country. One comes to healthcare and things like that. I know you’re Canadian, but I bet there are some Americans here as well.

My dad is totally blind and has been so since his late teens. But he is the one who, sighted and blind, go to when something needs to be fixed. He might need some sighted guidance sometimes, but he does everything by feel!
I have quite a few different videos on accessibility for iPhone and Android. You may want to check them out. Both types of phone have a lot of accessibility features that can help you make things bigger. And there are also accessibility features that will read aloud thing sfor you. There's a lot of things out there and from low vision to totally blind, one can use both an android and iphone independently.

I know your feeling, bro. For me the worst part of it is the significant metamorphosia, so I see straight lines and text being bent and crooked. It is depressing to loose your vision progressively, but let's try to think on that in a positive way. Probably there will be a normal cure in the future.
Otherwise, thanks to such brilliant videos and modern technologies we will still be able to see this world at least by our smartphone's camera!
I would like to add the seeing AI app also has a channel in it to read currency. It also has the option in it to turn on the camera when it cannot read whatever you're trying to get it to read however, seeing AI has to have an Internet connection to function rather it is the Wi-Fi or your cellular data, so if you were using an iPad, you have to have Wi-Fi for that app to work. It's not a problem on the phone since you typically always have cellular data now just letting people know that.

It was actually you who also mentioned lookout, and how good it was that caused me to download it. Envision is great, but I think lookout is better for my personal need. What I mean is I was very surprised when I found out that I was making video calls to people using the be my eyes app. So, I just want to know, is it okay if I answer that person’s question? I wasn’t sure what button it was when I first explored this app and I tried to click it. Apparently, it made a video call. To my surprise, I just kept quiet throughout the call and luckily I found the end call button. Lol! Feelings of uneasiness enveloped me after I ended the call but when I think back, it was funny.

Yeah. It’s hard for blind and visually impairred people to comunicate at first. They will feel uncomfortable to talk with other people. But we need to get used to it because when we go out, we need to comunicate with many people. Though this app is not bad from my side. I'am still using other apps, but for more accurate expirience, I prefer Be My Eyes.
I wish wezoom would have a slider bar to be able to zoom in quicker than just pinch and zoom. I also wish you could lock the settings so when you reopen the app it would stay where you left it
My top apps are Seeing AI, Blind Square, and I just subscribed to Scribd. Scribd is for everyone. However it’s very accessible on the iPhone. There are some books that are not on the iBooks app that are definitely on the Scribd app. You have to pay for this particular app also. I recently lost the ability to read effectively by eye, but I have hundreds of books in the cloud/on Scribd now. Thanks for the video!

These are some great suggestions. I hope you don’t mind but I shared your video in my tech group on Facebook. I really like the Voice Dream apps. I can write accessible documents on my phone with voice dream writer, I can scan print text with voice dream scanner, and then I can save those documents are pages I’ve scanned with voice dream scanner, and then save them to voice dream reader to read them excessively.
Those sound like great apps. I haven't tried them, but I hear that they are very good. You can always share any of my videos! It helps out the channel a lot. amilw

I would like to make a correction after seeing my own comment they seeing AI app has an option to automatically turn on your light. If the camera cannot physically read whatever it's trying to read it is in the settings and then options you can turn it on or off that is what I meant. When I said camera and turning it on I meant the light for the camera to read, the app can do it automatically if it needs it

Thanks, my AMD is getting worse at 74. Keyboard is hard to use and i have some programming and electronic projects to finish. WeZoom is great, it doesn't seem to timeout. Triple tap and hold will time out before i can find the place where i want to solder. or even the boxes on the 1040 tax form. Thank you very much

Hi there! I'm glad it's helping. Let me answer your questions but first I just want to Just let you know that have a new channel called carrie on accessibility. This channel has been discontinued.
I would discourage you from changing your resolution. At least not too much. What you can actually do if you're using Windows is change display scaling. It keeps it sharp while still making everything larger. You can play around it with the percentages. I have mine I think around 175% or maybe 200%. It also just depends on your monitor. You can also change text size. That changes a lot of the UI user interface text.
On Android, you can just triple tap without holding. You can do both. If you only triple tap it will stay there and then you can pan around with two fingers. The triple tap and hold is great because it helps you read faster. Or move around faster.
They do have large high contrast keyboards. There are pretty nice ones on Amazon. It will be more expensive if it's wireless but there is an Azio one that is wired and backlit for a decent price.

Hi carri 👋 how do you answer call using talkback in android 11 ? I'm having a hard time using my new vivo phone . I tried swiping to fingers up but , it didn't work . Is there an Android app that will help on basic phone items for the blind? I just want to make calls and text. While the basics are there (call "Sue" or "message Sue") I need more like consistency ("OK google" doesn't always work - Samsung phone). I need to be able to repeat things like who is calling, messages (will only read once), past messages retrieval (on phone messages and texts), saying numbers when a phone system prompts, easy editing of texts, etc.,etc. Many times my phone goes into never never land and won't do anything (updates or thinking I asked for info on something). I have to take my phone to my husband to have him back me out of what is stopping the voice from working. It is extremely frustrating. Then there are the changes when some "supersmart" (just kidding) Google engineer makes a change and kills a feature that might work. Are there apps by people that cater to the blind or nearly blind? I don't need any of the "identify this or that" stuff, just basic functions like I used to use before I lost my vision. Thanks so much....great videos!

I don't live in a very accessible city or area, so everything here is car, car, car. I wish I could live in a more walkable place where I could use navigation apps more though. Best of luck!

This is a interesting count down list Carrie, I myself tried to get the android Google lookout app on my old phone but then I heard from talkback "your phone is not compatible with this device" so my guess is these apps require a high definition type of camera which sucks for me because not matter how much I ask my parents, they won't get me a 2021 phone and that is so frustrating. If I lived on my own I would've had the new phone already.

It is an audio call only app and seems to be a pretty fun place to chat with a lot of other blind people. There are blind and visually impaired people on there from all over the world. It might something to look into! There are also communities for the blind and visually impaired on facebook.

In Sweden we get them they say player at Cetra for free and I do prefer you think it over on my smart phone since I told Hasse a lot better battery for instance and we have old version of the book thing as well hundred thousand titles already and if there’s someone that’s not, you can always ask them to read one and I have asked them to read in five books and they won’t have.
